VoIp Questions - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Ok so I have been playing around with a few VOIP clients I have got a few to work but have still yet to find a GOOD company to work with. I know all of them claim "FREE INTERNET PONE CALLS TO US" but we all know that is BS.
I am looking for a good company to work with for calls ONLY from the US to the US. Looking to same some minute usage on my cell plan. THANKS

How r ya mate. check out.
www.optus.com.au
and
http://www.telstra.com.au/
there the two big 1's
I'm with Telstra as they offer the best coverage and the fact that they give me data connections without costing alot is great so i can use my hd and laptop to use the net.
Vodafone give you great deals to, $29 and you get $150 of calls but i still think the Telstra one is better. When i was the vodafone one, they charge you around 50 cents per 30 seconds or something which is bull****.
Telstra with 40 bucks gives you 9000 seconds which is counted in 10 second increments i think. Also 150 free SMS and you can use that $40 to buy yourself extra calls or data.
Awesome!! Thanks for the replies...I'll check them out n take your comments into consideration..!!

Hi Daniel.
I quit Telstra 10 years ago because of poor service and hi cost.
Was with Vodafone for a long time but got a bill for $600 when I went over my plan last year. Voda don't let you know promptly and accurately where you stand with your usage, (easy to go over without knowing). Got no satisfaction from Voda and switched to Virgin.
Never tried Optus apart from prepaid.
Coverage is on par with Voda.
Virgin use the Optus network but give better rates and low cost data.
I went over my plan late last year and received a courtesy text to let me know. I had a very minor increase for going over substantially.
Am very happy with Virgin.
Good to hear different opinions !!!
Thanks a lot.

Been with Vodafone, Virgin then Three. Of these carriers I found Three to be the best for my needs. (e.g. cheap)
They have cheap caps and data usage costs are the lowest of all the carriers.
Only hitch is coverage. If you are in a metropolitan area you'll have no issues, but out of metro/low coverage areas you'll roam to Telstra's network and pay thru the @ss for the privilege of doing so.
Good place to start to compare the different plans available.
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=943488
Three and Vodafone will likely be merging in Australia so this will affect prices & coverage.
Thanks Capeli ..
I started with a $10 per month/1GB plan with Virgin. Received two bills with about $1300 each in two different months. Managed both times to prove that I did not incur the usage as they claim. Be careful. They have ways to get you back big time. Now using Optus at twice the cost and same quota. Different billing system although the same company. No problem with Optus so far yet. If you want to research more on customer experiences with different Telco or evaluate different plans available, go here:

alright.. ill sure do some research first
thanks
Hey, so many Swiss come to AU for Uni.. like Dolph Lungdren he did Uni at Syd, anway just wondered why that is.
Vodaphone is best my friend. I have been with them all over 15years.
You can buy a SIM for $2 to start.
I'm on the $79 plan which gives you like $550 worth of calls, txt etc
I have not seen any other co. offer these sorta deals.
Telstra and Optus are known as the most expensive as they own everything telco related over here.
I guess you will need internet too, so I would strictly avoid Telstra & Optus for Broadband...
I think for $29 you get $150 worth of calls and text, which is awsome! on vodaphone.
I have only ever been over my $79 cap 1 time in 19mths, it costed me like $100, but you can easily dial 1512 to see how much you have used and how much left.. don't worry about that!

nope i also believe whit ben you can have a contract for only a month or two its simonly but would help you as you already have a phone
you can always leave if you want
well saw you know 100% dutch so check out the site www.ben.nl

dunno if its possibl for foreign paspoorts s i know some providers makes a deal out of it

Vodafone sells prepaid SIM-cards for about 5 or 7,50 euros, which comes with 10 euros credit. Unlimited internet access can also be bought for €9,50 per month with a "BloX" called "Zorgeloos Internet". You'll have to reactivate it after 30 days.
Without this BloX thingy, it's 75 cents per 15 minutes. So some quick math will show you it's way cheaper, especially if you use mobile internet alot. However, VoIP and SMSoIP are not allowed, as well as using your mobile to gain internet access on your PC.
To activate it, you'll have to send a text message to 4000 saying zorgeloos internet aan

MSN is allowed, I've got a Vodafone branded X1 and it had MSN pre-installed, so I guess that's allowed, huh?
Just noticed they also have an English summary on their site at
vodafone.nl/english/prepaid/blox
Apparently the data usage can't be more then 10 times the average from all users.
BEN is just awesome!
You can stop your contract whenever you want, and you can use it as long as you want.
And the service is just excellent. They're really awesome guys over there.

[Q] Can I get caller ID without paying for it?

Is there a way to get Caller ID from your own Contact list instead of what
the Carrier's provide?
Paying for Caller ID seems like such a waste of money ...
Anyone know of an app, or an innate ability on the SGS that allows it to display
names from your contact list with corresponding numbers?
that is a network operator feature
so i don't think you can, unless you know how to hack into your phone account at the operator server to enable all those features for free without showing up as added feature in your invoice
LOL
woah, people PAY for caller ID? what next, paying for phones?
Hmmm, I wonder if there is an app like Saymyname, but it instead overlaps incoming
call screen with names/nicknames from your contact list...
Wow. I didn't know anyone had to pay for Caller ID.
If your mobile network provider charges for caller ID, you should speak to your consumer affairs office, especially if they aren't a "budget" mobile provider.
Because as a customer, you have a reasonable expectation that Caller ID should be offered for free (because it costs the mobile provider NOTHING).
unfortunately in Canada it has never worked out like that, all phone carriers are charging for the "feature"
even for land line they charge $5/mth
same for cell phones
it was on the news, in the recent International survey about cell phones Canada has the Most Expensive services, for the least feature, and the Worse Service world wide, and that is only for the voice part of it, the story is even worse on Data side of the service.

Actually when I lived in Canada my phone plan wasn't too bad...but TBH mobile phone service in Australia is much better.
However, although there are many upsides to Australia (including mobile phone service) there are plenty of downsides as well.
I will say though, reception with Rogers seemed to better for 3G service inside buildings than it is with Vodafone AU, although I'm getting much more bang for the buck here...even with the high AUD, mobile phone service is pretty much the only thing here that seems to be cheaper compared to Canada.

I'm with Rogers and I get the following:
500 Min day.
Free after 6pm and weekends.
Incoming calls free.
Rogers to Rogers free.
2500 out going text and unlimited incoming.
Caller ID, 3 way calling, call forwarding, VM.
6 Gig's of Data with teathering.
All for $48 including tax and all. You telling me you getting a better deal with Vodafone AU? I doubt it!
when i lived in the USA i got way better deals than what we got here in Canada
Caller ID + voice mail were standard features even for the least expensive package

Yeah...much better.
Basically this is what I have
Unlimited national calling (mobiles, land lines, 1300, 1800, 13 etc) no prem numbers but includes 3G video calling (which the galaxy S has a front facing camera)
Unlimited international/national sms/mms
caller id
voicemail
Confrence calling (I'm not sure what the max is, but I've had more than 4 people on one call)
Call forwarding
3GB of data with tetheringe
$99 AUD a month....although the AUD is quite high right now. I use up quite a bit of min as this is my primary phone.
Not to mention at the time I got a free brand new unlocked iphone 3GS (almost a year ago) on a 2 year contract which I resold...for quite a bit. But if we subtract from my costs it's drops my actual spending to around $50 AUD/mo
Then I use skype to go (since I get unlimited national calling) for $30/yr and get unlimited north american calling
But all in all my bill comes out to be $99/mo + $2.5 = $101.5/mo for well unlimited calling to Australia and North America...pretty sweet IMO.
Hell if you don't need the international text you can go with optus or virgin mobile and get even better deals (less money, more stuff!)
Essentially this isn't even a 'retentions' plan which is what I was on in Canada, this is a plan any one can sign up for.

Why would you migrate to Canada?
Cons:
I mean if you are not in Sydney/Melbourne, for the most part Canada has better food, but the weather is worse, pay way is worse, taxes are higher, lifestyle is more work hard, play lesss mentality, health care system is far less efficient.
Pros to Canada:
Government is better, overall cost of living is cheaper, many things are cheaper, resturants are way better, huge push towards post secondary education (huge thing IMO), not nearly as many drunk people at 9 am on a tuesday p)
I moved from Canada to Australia, Although there are many Cons to Australia, I figure if you live in Melb/Syd then many of major cons are avoided.
Sorry, forgot to add quotes, this is in response to rmanaudio's Rogers plan post.
I find this plan incredibly hard to believe.
Didn't Rogers/Bell just introduce the 6gb plans? Like a couple of months ago? Cheapest just for data is $30, which would mean the rest he would have to get for $10-12.
Maybe its true, but I have a great corporate plan with bell that rogers corporate said was impossible to match:
For $52.00 BEFORE tax, I get:
250 daytime minutes
6pm - 8am weekdays free
Weekends free
Unlimited incoming minutes
Unlimited texting
Call display
Call Waiting
Call Forwarding
Conference Calling
Voicemail
Detailed Billing
6gb Data with tethering
($22.00 for the voice/text stuff, $30.00 for the data = $52.00+ tax)

[Q] Using Google Voice on an Unlimited Data Plan

I've looked at a couple of threads in many forums (including this one) and was contemplating on this idea for a while before I came here. If this question was asked, then pardon me for posting a repeated question.
I've recently been testing Google Voice on both my phone and computer. I got a Google number and was able to make a call directly on my computer to so many people on Gmail and Google Voice website (no apps), so I assume that Google Voice uses voip technology. If that's the case, is it possible to get an unlimited data plan without talk and/or text for a good low price and use Google Voice over it to save a couple of $$$? And if so, what would be the best carrier to use in the US?

I did some searching and found that there are micro sim to sim adatpors. But the service only caps at 2GB. It may work, but I am a heavy data user. If there's any other plans out there that offers unlimited data for a good price, then I may just go with that.

I've looked into doing this same thing, but nobody in the US is eager to hand out data only plans. Additionally, Sprint is the only company (correct me if I'm wrong) that still has true, unlimited data, others have switched to a 5gig cap, which is still likely sufficient for your needs.
One way you might be able to get around it, and this may not be MORALLY sound, is to say you are hearing impaired and thus, aren't willing to pay for the voice portion of your plan.

Hmm. I could use this method for a family member of mine. He's hearing impaired, but he is on the internet a lot and he may be interested in that. I wonder if I can ask Sprint (or whom ever) if I can do that as well.
So many phone companies are getting rid of their unlimited data plan, so it's hard to find a good one. I heard that T-mobile has a reputation of having bad signal, but they have the no contract unlimited data plan for $50/mo, but given what I heard of their reputation, I'm not so sure it's worth it.

T-Mobile $30 Prepaid Plan Users Thread

This thread is for all users who have went with using T-mobiles Unlimited $30 plan with 100 minutes of talk time and 5G of monthly 4G usage.
First question: what VOIP programs you use to make and receive calls? What is the best combination free/paid apps?
I've been using this plan on my Galaxy S3 and will be using it on my Nexus 4 if it ever shows up. Great plan!
Groove ip works great when I'm home, but I'm still on my s3. I also played with spare phone voip and it seemed to work pretty well.
can you go into a tmobile store and get the micro sim for free if you're a current tmobile user? i ordered the micro sim online but dont think it's coming tomorrow when my n4 arrives
Vonage for VOIP
I downloaded the Vonage app, ** You do not need to sign up for vonage to use it ***
And I can make free calls to any number in the US for free.... It uses your current T-Mobile number for calls.
The quality of the call is amazing and it works remarkably well.
I use GrooveIP when I'm home on wifi. I tried it a few times on 3g/hspa+ and it didn't fare too well. I'll try it again with the Nexus 4's improved download speeds and see if it makes a difference.

I'm about to find the answer to that myself tomorrow. My N4 is arriving tomorrow too. I'll probably hit all the local stores and ask for a new sim for my new phone.
Back to the topic, I've been thinking of converting to the $30 plan too. How are the chances of also transferring over my current T-Mobile number over to the $30 plan? It's of great value to me to keep my old number.

I currently have $60 everything unlimited pre-paid with 2GB of data at HSPA+ speeds. While I can afford it, paying $30 a month would be even better. But is this plan for people that hardly ever talk on a phone or there is a way to get free incoming/outgoing calls ?

I use Google Talk with tapatalk, but as of now I have the 50$ plan with unlimited talk from my one s until I can get the 30$ kit, they wouldn't let me migrate from the unlimited down to the 30$ said I had to go to Walmart and do it or order online. Sux when you know a csr has the power to do something for you but won't. Wish I was a hot girl sometimes.

No they don't use minutes, it uses data. Vonage only works for outgoing as far as I know and grooveip works for both. You have to set up groove with your google voice number and change a certain setting (can't remember which) or it will use minutes. When someone calls your google voice number it forwards to your phone.
I would recommend using vonage and calling people right back when they call because it's alot better quality.

Just get a new sim and activate it, then trasfer your number to the new account. I've heard people say they were able to transfer the funds too.
There is a great thread at SD that you can learn everything there is to know about this plan.

If you use your phone number to call out with vonage, I'm pretty sure it is going to use up your minutes. Similar to how dialing in/out works with Google Voice:
If you choose for your caller ID to be from your Google Voice number, then it uses minutes like you are talking to your Google Voice number, and
If you choose for your caller ID to be from your real phone number, then it uses minutes like you were calling them directly (because Google simply transfers the call when the person is reached).
This is widely known due to the fact that people used to put their Google Voice number as one of their family members so they could get unlimited calls to that number.
So, I personally would not trust the previous poster without checking myself first. no offense
Programs like GrooveIP skip your phone number entirely and route you directly to your Google Voice number so as not to use minutes.

I haven't even activated the phone yet because I'm waiting a case to get here. I was able to make calls no problem even without having service.

Currently have a 2 year contract and the $30 monthly 4G plan, was told that you dont always get the same coverage on prepaid than you do postpaid so I am currently testing it out. But I have not seen a difference yet. just have to wait for my Nexus 4 to come in and then cancel my postpaid plan.
I was able to get a free micro-sim from the tmobile store when I went. simply said when your phone arrives we can transfer everything over and if you decide you want to stick with the pre-paid we can switch your post-paid number over as well.

Yes, if you use Vonage it does not use your minutes, same as GrooveIP, but....
I believe if you use Vonage with the phone number on your plan, then it will eat up your minutes.
I have yet to see any program that uses the phone number on your plan, without also using your minutes (T-mobile wifi calling uses your T-mobile phone number, and it also uses your minutes).
Correct me if I am wrong.
Vonage app doesn't use your minutes
Thank you guys for the Vonage app tip. Never came across it before. User interface is very usable and performance is great.
I still don't have the N4, only a few hours more , but I've had the $30 tmobile plan (100min + 5GB data) for a about a year now. I was forced to get a new number, couldn't transfer my old tmobile prepaid number.
Vonage app doesn't use your minutes. I installed it and allowed it to use my tmobile number (it auto detected it and sent an activation code over sms). I then made 2 calls one on wifi and another on 4G (currently have the galaxy exhibit 4G supports HSPA+ 14) quality was pretty good on both, considering grooveIP is unusable on it because of the weak processor, although Skype and G-Talk work fine. I had the same number of minutes remaining after the 2 calls as before. No minutes used.
The $30 plan works well for me because I use a little over 2GB of data a month, and rarely exceed the 100 minutes. And when I do it's only 10cents a minute. And no extra fees and taxes. Plus I pick up recharge cards online regularly at 5% off and no sales tax. It's a win win win situation
