Ok, I may be asking stupid things here, but I don't get the whole GPS traffic updates problem...
Ok, so we have programs like Microsoft Live Search and Google Maps for Mobile that get all the traffic info they need from the web. There's 2 problems though - they don't guide you (step by step directions) and they don't calculate the route based on the traffic. They just show the traffic info.
What I don't get is why can't I find GPS software that will do EXACTLY the same thing as those two, but also give you guidance and calculate routes based on traffic info?
Yes, there's iGo and TomTom that need TMC hardware/subscription/whatever. And yes, there's Garmin XT that gets traffic info from the web, but it only works with external Garmin GPS receivers.
Is there no GPS software with traffic updates from the web that would work on phones like Kaiser with built-in GPS? Or am I missing it?
Another idea would be a piece of software that would get the traffic tables from the web (for free), and then emulate a TMC antenna/whatever on a certain COM port. Is that something that's impossible to make?

I have TomTom 6 installed on my Tilt and it works great. Also, traffic is free to US users, although they don't advertise it. I called them a while back because I was planning a long roadtrip and I wanted traffic, but I could not find on the website where US users could buy it. I called the 800 number and they gave me a free subscription, and said when it expires to call back and ask for another. It will calculate the route, then check the traffic and ask if you want to re-route around it. It also gives audible and visual alerts when new incidents are detected on your route, plus many times there is detailed info available where you can see exactly how far the backup is, and how long the estimated wait is. Its really nice.

You have to buy the TomTom software. They ordinarily have traffic as a subscription based service, on their website I think its like 30 euros a year. Well worth it in my opinion, but I'm unable to pay in euros... Anyway if you have the TomTom software working you can activate traffic for free by calling if you are in the US.

I'm using AT&T's TelNav right now (free for the first month) and it's pretty good so far but I'm thinking TomTom might be a better solution. You just order the CD and then load it all to a miniSD card right?
Also.... Jay.... This is a little off topic but where did you get the mount for your phone (shown in your usericon)?

Yes, you install the software on your storage card. I have a 4gb card and I have the entire north american continent map on it. I can go anywhere in the US & Canada without switching maps. At this point with the pirces on the 8gb cards coming down I would buy an 8 gb card, but it will support up to 32 gb I believe. I bought the mount from www.proclipusa.com, and although the total package was just over $100, its well worth it.

Neither Windows Live or Google Maps are GPS software. They're web apps with extended functionality that support GPS.
Real GPS software have big map packs and the only thing it needs is a GPS signal.
As for GMXT, they've supported internal GPS since October 2007, and that's what I've been using; free traffic and I guess that's forced TomTom to do the same. You can find threads on how to unlock GMXT off their puny microSD cards.

However, my question remains the same.. Are there some limitations that prohibit the creation of an emulator software that would get traffic updates from the web and act as TMC device for GPS software like iGo?
Those traffic updates only work when you're on the freeway, not on city streets. I use TomTom in conjunction with Google Maps. Google Maps at least tells you if the traffic jam is less than 25mph(red) or 26-50mph(yellow). It's pretty accurate. TomTom only has a little car symbel that followed with little dots that represent traffic jam. With google maps, you can zoom out and see the big picture with traffic info. It has saved me hours by allowing me to choose which freeway to take with less traffic jam miles before the jam starts. If all of the sudden I got stuck in traffic jam before google maps updates the traffic info, I use sigalert.com (in LA area) with Opera Mobile to tell me what caused the traffic jam and what time it started. It gives great details about the trafffic jam. It reports how many cars are involved, what kind of cars are involved, which lanes are affected, CHP, ambulance, fire department arrival time, injuries reports.
You may think well I dont want to use 3 programs just to tell me about a traffic jam. If you're in a traffic jam going 0mph, you have time to use your Tilt.

Yes, but if you tap the right edge of the screen you can view the details of the traffic jam. Often when you view the details it will say "Backup 2,000 yards Estimated time: 3 minutes" Then you can choose to reroute around it, or just go through. TomTom also has different icons that show you what the incident is. Its pretty obvious usually when you see them. The man w/ the shovel is road construction. A lane with an X in it means that the lane is closed ahead. A car on its side is an auto accident. An icon of several cars backed up is heavy traffic.

I have a questions. I have tomtom 6 on my tilt. I got it from school that a profesor by mistake left the software open to public. I took it and installed it. The only thing that i needed was the activation key. I got that now and works fine. I only loaded California and Nevada for now. I had the traffic trial only for 30 days. I read that it is free to U.S. customers. Can I call them and have it activated on mine. Agian, I found the program and my worry is that if I call, would I be asked personal information? And if I give it out, by my devvice code, can they block me from using the buddies feature and weather? Thanks.

Each TomTom install disk can only be used to install on 2 devices, then they lock it out and you have to call to activate the third. I had TomTom 6 installed on my old iPAQ hw6515. When I bought my Tilt I installed it there with no problems. 30 days later I had an issue with the device that wasn't fully resolved, and rather than dealing with a warranty exchange refurb in another 2 months I just exchanged it for a new one in the store. It took me almost a week to get my TomTom registration moved to the third device. I'm suprised you got TomTom working at all if its a pirated copy.
Anyway, to activate your traffic subscription they will need a valid email address, so in a sense they will know who you are...

Wow. Then I had the last chance to use it. Well I dont know if I was the first or second to use it because in order for me to recieved traffic reports, I had to create a username and password along with my email. Then I loged in my information through my phone and it worked. I only had traffic reports valid for 30 days. Now it has expired. TomTom web site has my information now and I guess I should of been the first one to use the software because then my information would of conflicted with the first installation of the cd I found. So my question is now, can I call that 800 number and ask them to activate traffic on my phone. I am worried that they may block me out for good or something. Though my gps would still work. What information do they ask apart from my email? Is it ok to call? I do not have a cd key for the cd. I just poped it on my drive and boom, it worked on my phone. Please help. Thanks.

Hey, I just upgraded to the official sprint rom and hate their satellite nav program, but anyway, I wanted to know if anyone has any recommended software for use with the phone, my friend recommends Garmin XT but I can't find for sure if it even works with the Mogul. Thanks in advance.

Garmin XT works perfectly with the mogul. i have it on mines, you dont even need to use the GPS Launcher. it detects it automatically. i also have tomtom 6 navigator on mines as well. it works well too, but you have to use a gps launcher with that one.

Some GPS programs dont detect the mogul's internal Gps, so the Gps launcher, activates gps as well as the program at the same time.

this is where i read up on it. However the Garmin XT Mobile doesnt require the launcher in order to use the mogul internal gps.

Could you comment on whether or not Garmin XT has text-to-speech for street names? During my limited experience with TomTom (on a friend's phone), I noticed that TomTom didn't have this feature (or it wasn't turned on by default). Does Garmin XT announce street names?

NO, it does not have this feature or none that I can see. But it does work great, I think I like tom tom for some of the other features like advanced routing and I think the maps tom tom are more accurate. For example I get a lock at my house and it says that I am at 1057 and should be 1017.
But for the most part is works great.

It does not read out the street names but I have found that I don't really need stephen hawkings telling me what the name of the street is as long as it is telling me when to make the turn! LOL
The Garmin also does a better job on streets with two names which is common in rural areas...
I live on a street that is a county road AND a state highway...
In Tom Tom I had to use the county road to enter in addresses but with Garmin it would take either street name and still find it.
There are a few nav proggies that do read names out to you but I don't think any of them have the other features and huge POI database of Garmin or Tom Tom.
I have both of those installed (8GB SD Card) and I have to say I never use the Tom Tom just the Garmin!

Please bare with me as I am very new to this.
I got my new Mogul last week and I do have unlimited internet and text msg on my plan. Is that sufficient to get me going with GPS? Or will I be billed for using GPS on my Mogul(Sprint)? Pls let me know as I am very much interested in using GPS.

You really don't need either to use GPS unless you are going to use google maps or ms live. Then you would need internet connection.
Garmin, IGO, Tom Tom and others use the gps receiver in the phone that uses the sats in the sky without the need for monthly fees. So if you only wanted to use the phone and gps (no internet or sms) then you would not need a data plan or sms plan.

If you have unlimited Data package then you can use pretty much any GPS program you want. No extra charges at all! They don't charge for the use of the GPS and you only need the data connection if you use a program that downloads maps on the fly. (Google or MS). I personally don't like that because if I happen to get to an area where the data service isn't available you won't get a map until you get back into a data service area.
A program like Garmin and Tom Tom will also use data connections if you have them but that is only to download updated traffic data. Both Garmin and TT store the maps on the device. If you have a large SD card (like my 8GB) you can store the entire North America map with all the POI data which takes up about 2GB (a little less) of space. IF you don't have a lot of storage space you will have to download a partial map that covers the area your going to be driving in. May seem like a pain but it makes the operation a lot better to have the maps local and always available.
IF you have good storage space and unlimited Data, then your pretty much set. Make your choice based on the features of the program.
If you want to get a feel for each go to your local electronics store and try out the standalone TomTom and Garmin units. They pretty much run the same software (similar) to what you'll get on the PPC.
Google and MS are free so you can easily try them too if you want.
I personally love my Garmin. I bought the GPS10 and it works great. But don't buy the SD card versions...Get the CD which will allow you to install on the PC any SD card instead. Then you can install to any size SD card you want with plenty of room for other things as well!

bpratt - Absolutely no issues installing GXT on a 6800 but it does require at least a 2GB+ memory card to store the maps and program. With GTX you don't actually install it onto the device it really installs into the memory card. When you put the memory card into the device it then adds the bits it needs to the device and runs. In fact you can use that card in any WM device that Accepts SD memory and it will install and work as long as that device has GPS capability.
Get the CD version of it though. More flexible installation options.
Authentisketch -No Garmin isn't free. At least not legally free. I got it with the Garmin Bluetooth GPS10 unit for $119 on Ebay.
i've been running google maps on mine. It has a tracking option (gps) and it's pretty good. Pretty scary actually. To be honest, not only did it find where i live easy enough, the address, BUT ALSO THE FREAKING APARTMENT UNIT! That last bit bothers me so much. I've never been a "ohhhh tin foil time" but that, how does it know what unit i live in???

I used Iguidance 3.0 w/ google maps today. It's a darn good combination
if you dont' have a lot of storage space. for my area, VA/DC/MD
program and maps only take up 79 megabytes on my 2 gb storage card.
this setup means i dont' have to store PIO i can look up the latest with google maps,
and copy the address over into iguidance.
The only thing is, when it reads directions, it pauses between words.
in..200..yards...turn... left I hope there is a mod to fix that...
the iguidance cab file is only like 13k.
Through conversations with a few folks I've learned that TomTom is apparently contemplating ceasing any further development on any products for PDA's. They are apparently no longer supporting Nav6 nor will they provide any further map/poi updates for Nav6. They had apparently begun development of Nav7/8 but have suspended that project until a go/no decision is made.
This decision is apparently being driven primarily by significant bootlegging of maps (their primary source of income with Nav software).
I have gotten this info second-hand, but believe it is reliable. Has anyone else heard anything along these lines?

I had to call them to help me activate my maps on my fourth replacement tilt. In the course of conversation, I asked about new maps. And the answer was there were new maps but not for navigator 6....they were developing navigator 7 and were in the process of determining "viability." When I asked if that meant they were thinking of discontinuing it, he backpedaled and said they just want to make sure that everything works with such a wide variety of devices to support - palm, symbian, windows mobile.
With what you heard, it sounds like it could be a possibilty. Shame. It's a good program...
I agree, it's an excellent program and I get a lot of good use out of it, I hope they continue to upgrade and improve it. The ONLY thing I don't like about TomTom Navigator 6 is that it doesn't have Text to Speech, it would be nice to hear "turn right on Yuba Street then turn right on California Street" instead of just "Turn right then turn right".

They released new maps this past week for the Nav6 as well as all their other products.
Until you see this on their web site it is just someone's rumor.

Do you know if those truly are new maps? After installing TT on my Kais and downloading the free map for my metro area 5 days ago I've found a large number of outdated things including 1 year old streets not in TT and POI's 1 to 4 years out of date. I'd think that they'd want the map they give you for a trial to get you to purchase from them would be the most up to date.
Can anyone tell what the exact version is of the new maps? From what I can read about them is that they are version 6.75 but they done give the build number. I already have version 6.75.1409. Just wanting to know if they really are newer maps.

Of course as it is "live" and downloads maps on the fly you better have an unlimited data plan. But it is cool driving along in Satellite View!
HINT - the CAB is not seperately downloadable. You have to download it direct to your PDA - last time I did it was about 1.5Mb. Though once you have the CAB in memory you can back it up to your PC.

The one big disadvantage of google maps is that it DOES require that live connection. If you are in a poor reception - or no reception area - it is hard to get those directions. For me, i would rather have it sitting on my device and just be dependent on the satellites....instead of BOTH satellite and cell tower.
I don't think the have stoped developing v7 because the new HTC Daimond comes with v7 intergrated in the rom. This can be found in several artical on XDA.
There is much to like about google maps. As you mentioned, they are constantly updated, fairly accurate, have tons of useful info, allow you to click on POI's for info, to call POI, or link to POI website.
Unfortunately it doesn't have turn-by-turn capabilities (at least that I've ever seen) or allow you to keep maps on your device (besides costly when roaming, I seem to always find areas without cell service). It doesn't determine your direction of travel with an arrow, only shows a dot. These are the biggies. Some of the route planning and other things that TT or Garmin have are also useful but missing from Goog. Google's love of learning anything and everything about people for their own profit is also a bit disconcerting. Them knowing where I've been, where I am, and where I'm going is perhaps too much.
Telenav only works in the US, Garmin is coming out with their own phone to avoid the pirated maps/revenue issue...
Darren Griffin from PocketGPS forum has written the following statement
"In Amsterdam last week I quizzed TomTom on this and whilst their future plans for PocketPC were vague, they did suggest that piracy had been major issue and 'if' any future releases were planned they would most likely only be in partnership with manufacturers. "

Google does not offer voice guidance or turn-by-turn maps. However, Google does offer a traffic overlay which is free (TomTom charges) and does not require updates.
Oddly, it seems to take TomTom about 10 minutes or so to get a GPS lock. Google (with GPS turned on) seems to take less than a minute. I have never understood that

I called and the 1409 is the latest version of the map.
Tech support indicates that they have no plans to discontinue the Nav6.

Mine (Kaiser w/ TT) almost always gets GPS lock within about 30 seconds of starting the TT app. This is in US including MN, CA, NY, and GA.

Yep, same here, TomTom has a lock and is showing my location in at most 60s when I turn it on while driving. If I'm sitting still, it's less than that.
The Tilt does not seem to have much luck getting a signal when shielded from the sky, however.. Even sitting in a restaurant near a window I've found it completely unable to get a signal but it locked on in <15s when outside. I always mount my Tilt on my 'grip' mount on my dashboard so it has a reasonable view of the sky.

Do you have aGPS enabled? That will enable you to get a lock even inside of buildings, or anywhere that has little or no view of the sky.
I hope they do move to navigator 7 at some point as I like the idea of things like map share that are avaliable on the go 720 tomtom models.
Looks like there will be TomTom 7 for Procket PC.

i get a quick lock on tomtom, but poor refresh updates from the GPS chip, so its laggy as.
TOMTOM also dont support the kaiser, TYTN II, or the OEM Branded ones, so getting support is a pain (even though my bloody phone came with tomtom on a CD!)
My GPS Reception jumps all over the place too. very unreliable.

I have just moved over from the HTC Kaiser (Vario 3) to the G1 and I love everything abotu the G1 the only thing it is missing is decent turn by turn navigation.
I had tomtom on my Kaiser and am looking for something similar for the G1,
I found this link demoing CoPilot 7 but it doesnt look to be avalable to the public as I cannot find anywhere to buy it from. and on the CoPilot website it doesnt list the G1 as a compatible phone.

I found and downloaded AndNav 2 and found that it wasnt very good the display is to small and i cant get used to the interface.
lastly I found TeleNav but ind $10 a month a little bit of a rip off, i would rather something you pay a 1 off fee like you would with a tomtom and then update the maps at a cost.
Does anyone know where I can get the CoPilot from and if its even out yet.

i move from a htc 3300 (artemis) with tom tom, i gave it away in exchange for the Dream, but im a little regret about this, because im always lost the google maps show me in the map but dont tell where to turn. Wisepilot is expensive and the andnav2 is very very limited. I have a nav4all but dont show the map and is anoying and confusing.
So i need this for navigate in work and i dont have one Turn to Turn GPS like the old Tom Tom in htc Artemis.
Anyone have a solution?

I'm using it until Something else is released that's as good as telenav, but doesn't have a subscription fee.

I think i have found the app for me, Its a free download from the market place and its called wisepilot. its a very profesional GUI and looks like it works very well and the instructions seem clear( havent road tested it yet)
The only issue i see is that it says that its a free trial and it shoudl expire after 5 days and then to renew its 99Euro per year which seems expencive considering i can buy a tomtom for around that much and i dont have to subscribe to anything.
The only issue i have with wisepilot is that it downloads the map squares from a server rather than having them on a SD card.
Agghh FFS What is the point of a navigation system that doesnt work outside of GPRS coverage
What if I am not within the network coverage?

just a warning about telenav, if you try to cancel they wont do it. you need to call in like 3 or 4 times to confirm they canceled, and they will strait lie to you about calling in and cancelling.
Just an FYI, but I've just driven down to the Costa Blanca in Spain from the UK, using Copilot as my navigation tool. It worked absolutely brilliantly - routing was flawless and accurate and because the Hero can multitask I was able to listen to audiobooks and make/receive phone calls, without any hiccups from Copilot.
The original plan was to use a Navman unit as the primary, with Copilot acting as backup, but the routing from Copilot gave me a route that was 3 hours shorter than Navman, and it proved to be eerily accurate on its estimate too!

Awesome, sounds like CoPilot worked like a charm for you
I have to say, I have been disappointed by co-pilot on android. It drops GPS fix all the time, taking ages to get it back unless you restart the app, usually at a crucial moment! It also freezes quite a lot. The general interface is awkward, just nowhere near as good as navigon and tomtom where on WM, since both are supposed to be releasing android versions I am holding out for them!
Ahhhhhh, but have you upgraded your ROM? This alone fixed the GPS dropping issues. to be honest I find it better than my TomTom due to the fact that it tracks speed cameras now as well.

All I can say is that I didn't experience a single issue in 1100miles/20 hours of driving. I only have complaint about Copilot and that is that I wish it used the "standard" Android on-screen keyboard rather than its own, as their own isn't very good.

CoPilot gets its GPS information from the android framework. If you're losing GPS location, your device is at fault, not copilot! copilot is just quick to accept from the framework that the location is not longer acceptable.
Anyone know what the update released today was for?
Hmm sounds like I need to see what's wrong with my gps then give copilot another go. I am on the new Rom.
The idea of tom tom iq routes does still excite me though

Qwerty keyboard! Not sure what else.
I am a total convert from tomtom .. I really like CoPilot.. (except for the keyboard)..
I am not 100% happy with the routes it chooses by default but I do know that if I bother I can modify its route planning preferences.. so yeah .. great program and roll on a decent live trafiic addon..
after an irritating start with copilot8, i can now report that (for me) the nav program works pretty damn good. i agree that the keyboard blows compared to what it can be. otherwise, i have solid gps connectivity that has locked into decent accuracy and updates speedily. also, the nav map screen as well as option screens do the trick. tomtom on winmo was more streamlined but i have come to appreciate the depth of features available though settings. the recent email from user support is encouraging too. it reads...

Have to agree with the positive points above.
I was an old time Tomtom user (having used v3, v5 and v7 over the years) I reluctantly switched to Copilot through lack of other options on Android.
A few weeks of use (with several thousand miles travelled) and I have to say I am very impressed. I have to admit that I have had a few lockups, but no more than I used to get with TT7 on my Omnia. The 2 lockups I have experienced have happened after 2-3 hours of running, so could be caused by the phone overheating (or too many additional apps alonside) rather than Copilot freezing.
I ocassionally lose GPS, but this is VERY rare, and it quickly picks me up again and reroutes accordingly - again this used to happen with TT7 so its not fair to fault Copilot for this.
For the price (I paid around £50 for the whole of Europe!!!) I would happily say that Copilot is my favourite sat nav program to date.

Just a headsup for those who tried CoPilot Early and didn't like certain things, the latest update (398) has introduced a QWERTY keyboard similar to the HTC one but skinned for CoPilot. MUCH better and easier to use. and also the maps update tracking as posted above. Brilliant GPS solution...

Just a question regarding the maps for CoPilot. When you download them to your memory-card, are they locked somehow? Can I backup the maps to a different location, so that I can save them in case of format of memory card etc?
I read that you have a one-time-only download of the maps...so it's kinda nice to know that I'm not stuck if I loose them
And how about updates for map? With all the roadwork going on, it might already be outdated by now?
And if anyone have experience with CoPilot in Norway, it would be nice to know

stuck on authorizing credit card
hi,
given all positive feedback, I decided to buy copilot. I am in belgium, so no paid apps in the market here. So I used market enabler... However, I am now stuck. The app is listed as purchased, but I fail to download it. It gets stuck saying "authorizing credit card". I am sure there is nothing wrong with my credit card tho. Any ideas?

Why note e-mail the company that produces CoPilot, I'm sure they will answer a possible customer.

I had this problem as well, It's a Google Market problem.
It sorted itself in a few days, Which was not very good.
