Kaiser - TyTN II - GoodLink ver 5

I have not found any threads regarding this so I went ahead and bit the bullet and tried on my GoodLink server. Initially disappointed because my server was setup to send the last ver 4 GoodLink software to the Kaiser. After upgrading then to ver 5 the phone portion of the device would not work no matter what I did. GoodLink seemed to work but the phone wouldn't. I then uninstalled GoodLink via the remove programs (now GoodLink does not require hard reset to get rid of it).
I waited 24 hours (chicken). I then made sure that ver 5 was pushed to the device initially - viola - seems to work great now after 24 hours. No slowing of the device as was the case with other lesser devices (memory and processor speed!).
So far I believe that for those who want GoodLink and PPC the Kaiser may be the best device so far! I'll keep you updated as to any glitches that come up. I fully recognize that with some of the improvements to Pocket Outlook and with always on active sync GoodLink is not as needed as it was before but there are still some "closer to desktop Outlook" advantages for business users.

So - I binned Goodlink some time ago on the Co HP device and opted for a phone the performance was so bad. Based on your recommendation I might try it again. Where can I get the latest CAB? Will my old account registration work on the TyTN - or do I have to go back to the IS dept for another "key" to get setup?

The IT dept has to enable the version 5 for your device. In my case I have my own GoodLink server and I tried to install via a cab file and it didn't work for some reason. So I went back to the OTA setup. Just call the IT dept and ask them to enable the version 5 for your device (that is assuming they have upgraded their server yet) and resend you a PIN email. It is three or four mouse clicks so don't let them act like it is much trouble!
If you don't get ver 5 right off the bat then uninstall it don;t go any further because it didn;t work for me to "upgrade" ver 4 to 5!

how much better is it than 4.93? i find it a little buggy and i still need to activesync my calendar and contacts for other Hpone related items.

Goodlink 4.9.3.21 works like a charm, syncs mail, calendar, notes, tasks, the works and it's fast too. Not sure why yours would be 'buggy'; mine works like a charm without failure.

There are definitely some improvements with ver 5 -- one thing to know (I have another post somewhere else) is that you need to prepare for the fact that there is integration with the native contact list and GoodLink. In other words if you still use Active Sync (like via a server) you will get duplicate contacts. The IT person for the GoodLink server has a setting to choose what parts of you contact list will get sync'd with the native contact list for "use with voice dialing" etc (as per GoodLink's literature), i.e, Last, First, work, home, fax, email. Once you figure out what is going on it is actually better because the native contact list takes up less space because you can pick and choose (the IT GoodLink admin guy) what is sync'd.
All the while the GoodLink Calendar list , of course, gets fully sync's as it is designed to do.
[Interestingly with vers 5 server and ver 5 on the device the GoodLink admin person can actually "dis-allow" the use of any particular application on your device. Every program you have on your device shows up on the GoodLink Mangemenet Console. It's pretty cool -- that is if you have access to the server!!!]
If you have question just ask and I'll try to answer them since I have my own server
PS as far as the duplicate contact thing you need to use PPContactsMgr and delete ALL of your native contacts, then tell active sync NOT to sync contacts and then let GoodLink do its thing as far as syncing the selected fields of you native contact list.
PSS I really like using GoodLink so far -- with it's limited syncing of the native contacts list which then work NICELY with PocketCM to make calls text msgs etc

Iten I was browsing sure does. I was really surprised when I was browsing my new management console for ver 5 and click on a tab that took a minute or two to respond (I didn't know at the time but it was retrieving from my device) and then showed my applications on my device and gave options for which to allow and which to disallow!!
I didn't want to mess anything up so I didn't experiment.

I tried the OTA setup and it gave me version 6(!).. Needless to say my old PIN wasn't valid - and the IT dept wouldn't enable it for me. They said "can't use none approved devices on Company networks".. so I can't use my TyTNII with Goodlink. I think the PIN was for v5.. but I don't see how to get the v5 CAB

I've just installed Microsoft Vista and find it a very nice operating system.
For my phone I had to install the Vista version of ActiveSync, I paired up my phone with that prorgam and it worked flawlessly.
But what FU#[email protected]% idiot has made an option to overwrite the phone data with that of outlook WITHOUT asking a deletion approval.
When installing software on my Vista machine askes me several time if I'm sure.... But that louwsy program just deletes everything without even asking.
Fortunately, I was just a merely 250 contacts that I've completely lost since my backup was lost due to the Vista installation.....
Normally the contacts would be in the deleted messages box, but since I've turned of that option I completely lost everything...

It happened to me several times cuz I always reflash my PDA and format my laptop.. I decided to save them in Microsoft's servers and add them to Messenger live contacts

When you pair your devices the MOBILE DEVICE CENTER is asking you how you want your data synchronized: replacing on mobile device, replacing on pc or combining! I guess you haven't paid attention! Even after you paired your devices you can change this options in the settings.

yikes, im sorry about that. Also happened to me not too long ago except on XP when I deleted the contacts on my phone. I resynced hoping that phone contacts would be restored, but instead stupid activesync deleted all the contacts off outlook even though AS was set to "replace items on device"!
Thankfully, all my contacts were moved to the "Deleted Items" folder, and I could restore them! (hit ctrl-6 when in outlook) I hope this helps.

damn straight! best program i've ever used. by backing up to a memory card once/twice daily you cant really go 'wrong' as such!
now, if only it was a 'requirement' for all cooked roms!
sorry to hear about your loss. lol. i very nearly lost my ENTIRE MSN messenger contact list (comprising of some 400+ contacts) but luckily i had 'tried' WLM on my smartphone before hand and it had synced them to that!
WLM is weird in the only sense that it will delete from both your phone and from your messenger list!

Typically one should never upgrade a Micky$ OS until SP1 is released, XP and W2k are both great examples. My biggest complaints are USB and network speed when copying data... just today went back to XP on my Thinkpad... just SO much easier when dealing with PDA's... (more importantly, my version of Ghost Server won't live under Vista... that's a deal closer for me... and screw Virtual PC and such, no time or desire)

Here is My 2 cents worth:
Windows 95 was a huge improvement over Windows 3.1. --- Excellent Job!!!!
Windows 98 was just a suckier version of Windows 95.
Windows Millenium Edition ME totally sucked. I fell for it. They got my $100.00 ----- ripped me off.
However Windows XP really hummed. --- Excellent Job!!!!
Windows Vista is just a suckier version of Windows XP.
Windows Vista = ME2 Only this time they're Not getting my $100.00

Mac is not a solution - it limits just about anything you want to do with the computer. IMHO Win XP offers much more in terms of available software and hardware compatibility (even over Vista).

I agree Mac is Not an answer. I got a supervisor at work always telling me how much better a Mac is. I never agree with him.
My Laptop has a door on the side where you can slide out the HDD. I have 3 Hard Drives.
1 has Linux -- can't begin to figure that one out.
2 has XP -- its my Old Faithful. Tried and True. The one I use.
3 has Vista Ultimate -- slmgr -rearm every 30 days. Testing it. It really does suck.

PIM Backup is the best!

Sorry to hear. I use intellisync to sync my data. I sync some stuff from lotus notes and some stuff from outlook. But the main reason i use intellisync is because before it does anything it prompts you with a dialog and tells you what it is about to do. Then I can go ahead or cancel or re sync everything.
I've tried other products and they didn't prompt and I've spent hours cleaning up duplicate entry's after the first sync.
Right now I'm having a few probs with intellisync though and am working with their support to figure it out. But its still one of the best sync programs I know of.

I just had the EXACT same thing happen to me. Its a good thing I had a "not too old" backup saved to the Airset Website. Otherwise I would have been TOTALLY screwed.

yep i know how you feel, had the same thing happen on my Magician and on the Hermes and more times than i can remember on the Nokia suite previous to that (believe it or not its worse than Activesync).
as for Vista im running it on the home laptop (it came with it) it is quite a shiny OS and considering the amount of surveys and control groups microsoft apparently did to perfect it (or finish it) its surprising there wasnt one Pocket PC user that said "hey you know that over write function in activesync..." unless there was and they didnt listen.

It wasn't Vista that caused the problem...
Personally I like Vista, the only thing I find crap is that you have to approve every program to run. It's great for security, but really crap If you play WOW, everytime the answer is yes, Vista won't remember it.
And someone mentioned that there is a choice how to sync.
That's correct, but when you pair your device it's kinda hidden in extra options I believe, I've found the button now. Still lost my contacts.
I find it really absurd that there isn't any message or approval question on the device. I think it would be nicer to let the program ask what data to keep what data to lose, if I setup syncing with data from the computer It will overwrite telephonenumber I've changed in the phone.
But I think I have got my contact almost complete again. It's a shame that I lost the phonenumbers that I pickup with te red button (ignore) or wiggle the scrollwheel up and down (silence).

Cal Synch-> Tilt Precedence over PC?

Without wasting your time discussing how I'm here...I have a bunch of calendar entries on my Tilt, all deleted in my PC, and I want to syncy the Tilt to the PC. But it comes up and tells me on the device: "There has been a change on teh server that requires you to resynchronize all items on your device. All changes made since your last successful synch will be deleted. Do you want to continue?"
If I continue, I end up with all deleted from my devie, none moved to my PC (I have them in a backup, but restoring them to the device doesn't help).
Do have have a way around this?

how many entries r we talking? i mean if 20 or less i would just type them into calendar on pc for a quick fix.

Well, I have probably 140 entries over several months.
The good news is I can get many back which are on my Work calendar, but maybe a not so large number that are not on my work calendar that I can't get back. But then, I need to identify what those are. That's the harder part, seaching through and figuring out which will be thre, which will not, etc.
I would think there should be a way to not have the PC be FORCED to be the master.
But, I'm not optimistic.

Diamond - MDA Compact IV First Impressions

Dear All,
OK, I need to change the Signature. I shall do that after writing this entry..
So, I upgraded to the MDA Compact IV on Saturday morning through T-Mobile. I managed a free upgrade, which was nice.
I had owned an MDA3 for quite some time before moving away from PDA Phones. When I used to play atound with everything, we were trying to get the Blue Angel to go from WM2003 to WM5! - That will show you how long ago it was!
Anyhow, I got the Diamond on Saturday morning and spent a few hours charging it up. I played with the T Mobile software for a little bit before suddenly needing to flash the ROM with something a little more erm, better.
Having cruised through the Site, I did note that there were a few suble changes to what was needed to flash a ROM compared to how it used to be done!
Not knowing exactly who's ROM to go for, I trialled a few ROMs and have now settled on what matched my closest needs.
Everything was quite easy and I now have a Diamond powered by Swiftblades version 7 ROM with the 16MB Page Pool. I have just noted though that there is now a version 7.5 using a new build so I'll flash that later and see what differences I get. I may flash a lower Page Pool as I don't need to Multi-task different applications that much.. Yet..
As a result of the Version 7 ROM, the phone is running a lot smoother without any noticable lag however it is early days yet and the phone has not really been used in anger yet!
I also updated to the 08 Radio and I have to say, I am impressed with the Signal strength compared to the other phones I've had recently.
Battery life is actually quite good so far. As I just said, the phone has not seen that may calls but I have fiddled a lot whilst looking around. It had its initial charge on Saturday afternoon and with the fiddling, a couple of calls, some texting and a couple of email exchanges, I'm down to about 50% power. However, that was this morning and I've not used it since.
Anyhow, that's it really. As I become more used to the phone, I'll start helping out on guiding various Newbie questions, etc like I used to in my younger days!

Im on flex web n walk £40/m (£90 cashback), the phone was free and i get 575 minutes, 500 texts, unlimited internet (works out £420 which ain't bad at all )
Also another question, i don't suppose you have seen a program that is actually good at backup & restoring apps/messages/contacts etc? At the moment i use Jeyo Mobile companion, which means i save all my contacts and threaded sms, then i backup my Start Menu folder and just copy it back after (as all my programs are installed on Internal Storage). This isn't really that effective as some programs may still have changed, some maybe updated in the new ROM and i lose the registry settings for Activating my apps/games etc.

Ok, I'm on an old fashioned Flext 30 Contract. I've managed to stay on the twelve month renewal plan so far. I pay £30 per month and that gives me 500 mins, 400 texts and unlimited Web & Walk. I did try to change a little while ago to a cheaper alternative however, T-Mobile themselves said that it there was nothing else that they could offer.. There's probably different plans available now but I think it's going to be best to stay with what I have for now.
Regarding back-up and restore, I guess this is something I need to look into. What I ended up doing back in the Blue Angel days was keeping the required Cabs in an external Memory to restore various Programs back on to it post flashing. The way then was to copy the cab into the Windows directory and then run it from there. Othere items such as Contacts, Messages, emails, etc were restored by running active sync before flashing then again afterwards.. I see there's still the PIM Back-up facility but in the Blue Angel days, it couldn't always be trusted and you ended up losing contacts, message settings, etc etc
Actually, remembering now, I used to keep a list of what needed changing within the registry settings for the programs I had installed.. haha
I understand that things might have moved on a bit now. For example, I noticed somewhere on the settings that Cabs can be installed and there's an option not to delete them after the installation process.
To be honest, I just need to play and experiment with the Diamond to see what it can and cannot do.
I've just looked back through what I've written thinking that actually, this doesn't really answer your questions but still, it's nice to talk! I won't finish by saying "Hope this helps.." hehe..

A couple of things to help you based on your posts so far - I've recently installed Swift's 7.5 lite ROM and so far it seems excellent - very quick and doesn't contain loads of software I'll never use. I use the 12mb pp version which works fine for me, but to be honest I've not tried the 0 or 16 versions.
I'm also on the 05 radio, and T-Mobile like you, and to be honest haven't tried anything later because it seems to work fine. If it ain't broke...
I tend to keep all my common cab files on the internal storage, you can install from there and by default they aren't deleted. No need to copy to the windows folder. I've reset so many times I can get back to a full working system within about an hour these days! The advanced config tools out there means there is little need to hack about in the registry these days, and ROM's like the excellent Swift ones often have many of the reg optimisations already set.

Regarding the post flashing technique, I've tried sprite backup and SPB to restore across rom upgrades but never had much success - you always find that there are some things which don't work right. Also you end up overwriting things in the registry which are part of the new rom and have problems.
I have quite a few apps installed, but the only surefire way to get it right is to start fresh when you flash.
My technique is:
- Flash the new rom
- Set up the owner information and bluetooth deviceid etc.. (you need to do this for apps which have registrations based on the owner). I also set up things like ringtones now before installing anything - no reason other than personal preference.
- Connect to activesync to sync contacts/appointments
- Use either sprite or pimbackup for SMS etc..
- Set up email accounts
- Install all old apps (cabs stored on internal storage. I also put things which install through activesync on internal storage so I've got them to hand for reinstalling).
- Set up all apps how I like them.
- Set up the today screen, and TF3D programs/weather etc..
- All done!
It usually takes about an hour. It's a pretty dull process but it works and it's definitely the best way to do it.
There are apps like sashimi which automates the install process, but I find the installing from cabs part usually only takes around 5 minutes anyway - its the configuring which takes longer.

Hi Ewans,
OK, I've just updated to the 7.5 ROM so I'll check that out over the next 24hrs or so.. I've gone for the 12MB PP as to assess what difference it makes from the recommended 16MB PP Version.
You know, I might keep with the 08 Radio for a week or so and change to the 05 radio to see what differences I see..
Once I can pass on some observations, I will..

Dutty's ROM 2.0 Full, customized manilla abit (removed curtains, removed some tabs, add tabs [call history/comm manager], wallpaper)
Seems to be faster & more stable than Panosha's when i tested that but i haven't moved since as i got alot of apps installed and no decent way to backup the registry keys for them at the moment.

HD 7 - Help please. Some basics....

Ive been a committed HTC and WM user for a long time now, so latest upgrade i maintained tradition and went HTC HD 7.
At the minute im not sure it was the right one
Lovely fluid interface and fast. But its just not 'easy'..... or something..... I cant put my finger on it. lol
So can some convinced users help me here/ fill me in (and in the process enlighten other newbies).
1/ Battery meter. Only seem to have it when locked. How can i get that into a more prominent place or have it appearing all the time?
2/ No Opera for WM7 Any other browser alternatives out there for us??
3/ Any way for me to get my SPB backups from touch pro 2 onto this thing???
4/ Recommendations for the absolute BEST backup solution
5/ Other advice for porting contacts from another phone
Thats some of my first thoughts- only got the phone yesterday.
In general as well id really welcome recommended app's to help make this powerful piece of kit into a really useful and worthwhile one.

1) you can simply swipe down where the battery meter is ont the tiles page.
2) Windows Phone 7 is a new OS, hence not alot of Apps currently, give it time, according to this quote on WPCentral "With regards to bringing Opera Mobile to the Windows Phone 7 platform, Norem states that the company is continuously evaluating that option." so you never know.
3) Are we talking contacts? you can back them up in PIMBackup, and expert the CSV file (I think) to a google account, and then synch that account with your windows phone 7!
4) ZUNE? when you update your phone, im pretty sure it makes a backup onto your pc/laptop
5) See post 3!

1. Just tap the top of the screen, and the battery, wifi, cell connection all pop down. There is currently no way (that I know of) to display it permanently.
2. There are other browsers out there, but they're all built on top of IE. Mango will introduce IE9. IE9 is pretty nice.
3. It's a whole new OS, with very little in common with it's WM predecessors. You couldn't even use Microsoft MyPhone backups.

5. I would import them into your live (msn, hotmail, live) account over gmail. Personal preference.

While the app list isn't huge, there's over 15,000 on the marketplace and growing.
If you've not updated your phone to NoDo, do yourself a favor and install Zune. It'll backup your phone prior to updating as well.

I'll contradict Jimbonics above by saying i'd recommend using gmail over hotmail to backup your contacts.
Only reason is i never managed to sync my phone contacts (which were imported from my old sim) to my Hotmail/Live account, which meant when i reflashed the phone i lost them all. One of my friends has a similar problem and is also unable to backup his contacts he has on his phone to hotmail.
Since i added them all to my Gmail account though everything has been fine. I can add new ones on Gmail and they sync up to my phone, or I can add new contacts on my phone and they sync up to gmail. I haven't heard of anyone else (yet?) having problems with Gmail Sync's either.
