Question on GPA/Data usage on Kaiser

Hi, when I get my Kaiser it will be my first jump into the world of GPS. I have a simple question.
Do I need an internet connection while I'm using the GPS Software, or does it work offline?

GPS uses satellites so the answer to your question is "No"; however, if you want live traffic updates then that might require an internet connection.
Thanks
Thank you very much for the info.
Also, it depends on what navigation software you choose. Software like Tomtom, Route66 etc... install the maps to your memory card so no internet connection is needed (except as mentioned above for traffic information etc..)
However, it is worth noting that some GPS software doesn't actually install all the map information, it actually downloads it as you go along and this is via your GPRS/3G connection so these can be pretty costly if you don't have a tarriff which is good for data.
I use Tomtom on my Vario 2 (hermes) and have found it is an excellent program.

I think what you mean is what is the best gps software, as the TyTN II/Tilt/P4550 comes with built in gps but no software.
I use TomTom with QuickGPS and this works great for me. You don't have to be online all the time. QuickGPS merely downloads the satellite info which lasts 6 days and Tomom does the rest.
Hope this helps.
yes sorry thats what i ment, i was thinking faster the i could type. a friend emailed me this software anyone try it,http://gpsvp.garminmapsearch.com/ its free and uses google maps.
I use TomTom which works great.
As for QuickGPS. This downloads Sattelite data as MACjam said. It will download via your data plan if not conected to a PC, or via your PC's internet connection when connected via Activsync. I use the Activesync method so I don't have any unknown data sessions open.

Simple Problem...(I guess)

Ok, I have never used the GPS feature on my Kaiser(Once a Tilt) till now. I have never needed to cause I didnt have a data plan. I used the routers at school and my house for internet. I got TT7 and I got a data plan cause TomTom is amazing. My GPS doesnt like to work. TomTom says their is no Device Detected. QuickGPS fails. The HTC GPS tool fails.....how can i troubleshoot my gps? Just a point in the right direction would help. (FWI, HD_III_OPAL WWE, 1.65.24.36)

What does that mean? Have you added a camera and changed the case as well as the ROM?

Fails in what way? The TyTN II I have, works ok with the version of Tomtom Navigator it came with but as TTN 7 isn't officially released (yet?) as an upgrade, all I can suggest is to go back to basics, perhaps trying the setup on my TyTN II in my sig. Otherwise maybe someone who's used TTN 7 on the TyTN II can advise you. Do a search in the Kaiser software forum, there were lots of GPS related posts in there.
I got it to work, my GPS settings were incorrect. Yea and TT7 works...I just downloaded the one free map that was close by, if I need to go anywhere else I will copy the maps from my "Official SD Map Card"
*edit* quick question...is gps on kaiser free?

if your set has an inbuilt GPS reciever then it should be free irrespective of what plan you have ...except for whatever you need to shell out to buy the gps software and maps...

It depends which Kaiser and where it was bought. The HTC Original TyTN II sold here in the UK came with TTN 6.032 on CDROM in the box but just like with the version you have it only allowed free download of one 'city' map. Any additional maps had to be bought and the number that went with the map could only be used on that device.

The Kaiser's GPS receiver is integrated in the phone and doesn't need anything network-related to function (so yes, it's free in itself). It will give any program that wants it the current position, speed, heading etc of the phone.
I.e. there was no point in you "not using the GPS because you didn't have a data plan".
Then what might require a data plan or paying something is the program in question. There are 2 types of programs, those like Google maps or MS Live that are free to download and use, but DO need a data connection as they will download the map data from the net on request while navigating.
The other type like TomTom, MioMap etc do NOT need data as they store the entire maps locally on the memory card, however they are payware so you have to buy them in the first place.

Any way to use GPS in HTC Tytn / tilt?

Dear all,
Hope to get help from you guys...how to use GPS in HTC Tytn / tilt? i bought it from US and use in Malaysia. But somehow cannot manage to find how to use GPS as i'm a newbie in this. currently my HTC Tytn / tilt doesn't have built in GPS device as said. But i have heard that GPS could be use without any devices??? Thx alot for information!!!
You just bought a tilt but it doesn't have built in gps?? You sure you bought a tilt? Every tilt or kaiser has built in gps. Try google maps mobile for starters to get your feet wet with gps. http://www.google.com/mobile/default/maps/index.html
The AT&T Tilt / Kaiser has built-in GPS. I think your question is more towards what GPS software to use because most standard ROMs for Kaiser don't have any GPS Mapping software built-in.
You'll have to install a GPS Mapping software and maps to make use of the GPS hardware.
Since you're in Malaysia, the 2 most popular GPS software for that area is Garmin MobileXT and MapKing G10 / 2007.
To find out more about these software and get the free Malaysia maps, please go to www.malsingmaps.com
ok ok...i'll try and see whether it works or not. But why there is an external GPS slot behind my HTC Tytn if it's built in????? i really do not understand. i have read the specification of the phone and it does not stated that GPS is already built in. but anyway thanks guys..i'll try.
like this?

that's only a connector for an external gps antenna, not gps device

coz google map is just a download agent, no map actually installed on ur phone. it is down-as-u-go.
Tomtom works on diamond. I havn't got any iGO8 works.
igo8 works on mine
copy this file to IGO folder and it shall work. In folders section make sure that the path is pointing to IGO.
or you can actually use mapking! King of maps! ha
A new answer to this old/popular question: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524311. With one week free download/trial, you can't loose.. Fully tested with the Diamond without any tweaking.
