I'm new as well, just picked up a tilt like the masses; ex-symbian power user, but I'm reading through all the FAQ's and Stickied threads. They help a lot since it's my first ppc device. So if you read read and read, I'm sure you'll find what your looking for.
Both of you should go read the Wiki. You'll find tons of info there.

Thanks for the tip Lidberg. That's next on my agenda after I finish reading the rest of the FAQs.
The Wiki should cover this but here goes anyway.
Soft reset is the eqivelent of rebooting a PC. You may loose unsaved data/settings.
If you close (not minimise) any open apps first you shouldnt loose any data and you will recover memory.
Hard reset is the equivelent of formating your C: drive (on most PCs) and reinstalling operating system, drivers and bundled software. In effect you have a brand new Kaiser with no user info or customisations that you may have performed. You will need to reinstall any apps that you had added. Think of it as a clean slate to use when things have gone horribly wrong.

So I'm wanting to do my first hard reset.
It doesn't look like we're going to get any video drivers (soon or if ever), so I'm looking to try and squeeze some more performance out of my device. I've read that a hard reset makes things a bit better.
I've also installed and uninstalled a TON of software while trying to learn what I like and don't. I've figured out what I want and I've decided that what I'm installing should all be on my memory card anyway. So, the memory in the device is fragmented and I'm probably taking a performance hit from that.
What I want to know, is what to expect? What am I going to lose? I have an AT&T tilt. If I do a hard reset - I don't have to flash the ROM or anything like that, do I? Is it like performing a hard reset on any other phone? (Loss of contacts, pre-installed software from the service provider, etc etc)
Is it any different with a PPC?
After looking around, I didn't find much as to getting this question directly answered. If it is posted somewhere, can someone link me to it?
Thanks in advance!
It will simply go back to its "out of the box" state, like the very first time you turned it on.
The pre-installed software from the provider will load up again automatically, in five or ten minutes, you'll be good to go.
Then just adjust the settings to your personal taste/preferences, install the software you've found on xda-developers or elsewhere (I take it you have them backed up on your card or PC?) and you're back in the game!

What about installed applications on the storage-card? Are they automatically recognized again or do they require reinstallation?

just like when installing a windows-based computer, the applications installed on the storage card will not be automatically recognised, since the entry in the registry and all the .dll files from /windows directory are gone. you need to get the "kit" for a certain application - namely the .cab file - and reinstall it again, even if it will overwrite the most number of files on the card itself.
hope i was somehow clear.

Yes, you are clear
Good thing I'm already backing up my CAB's too somewhere in case my Kaiser should crash.
Thanks for clearing that up!
Dont forget to hide under your desk while its reseting.
If your contacts are saved on your sim, you can easily access them too. Just fyi...

*The reason you hide is silly. You really just need to close your eyes tightly. When you hard reset there is a gamma light energy release that has been known to slightly burn the retina of peoples eyes. Over time this can cause cataracts. So look away or close your eyes tightly.

Why doesn't anybody cook this into roms? For that matter, why isn't this toggleable somewhere in Settings by default, huh Microsoft?!

As funny as dooby's reply was, oddly enough, some people do not like having the cabs stay on their device. It wastes space and is a bit annoying to navigate after reflashing a rom. With the advent of the UC capable roms, I would have to say that if you like keeping your cabs around, customize it into your setup. You can read about UC here and here.

You be quiet with that oversized waste of space post.
I was complaining about WM deleting cabs from my storage card. It doesn't bother me to delete them from the device itself. I still think it should be a toggleable setting at least to exclude the SD card.
Its actually kind of helps me to have the cabs delete themselves. I just keep a folder on my PC with all the cabs -- then when I put it on my Storage Card after a Hard Reset or New Rom, I can tell what is installed easy cuz the cabs disappear. I don't want them to stay on the phone. Just my preference.

I know what you were asking. I linked you to the video because "it is always better to reply than to start a new thread" and I think you should have made use of XDA's "best kept secret, the Search button."
The former would allow you to ask specific ROM makers why they don't include. The latter would have given you the answer you seek from the ROM makers themselves (since they've all been asked this question before).
You didn't actually think you were the first to ask this question, did you?
Nope, not that it matters. It was an open question to all, except smart asses like you. I wasn't asking rom makers specifically but everybody and their opinions.
I know how to Search, I do it all the time, except I don't have the time for it as I'm at work right now.
I thank you for wasting time ans space again, though, with a second 100% unhelpful post, my good sir.
Edit: I'm done here.

I for one did wanted to cook it into my past and current releases but never had any luck getting it to work. The only rom I've every used that had it working correctly was pdaviet roms. But I have spent some time with my up coming rom and was able to cook it into it. So my next release Open Touch v4.0 does have it included.
For me it has been a learning process working with the base rom itself and there are many things we want it to do but some times it just will not work the way we want it to.
Regards,
Well a read only cab file stays after installation. I assign all my cab files "read only" attributes, either from desktop PC before I put in on my phone, or use total commander to do that.
I didnt know this was a Debate just why it has access to remove the cabs from our memory cards. I myself hate cab delete because ive used a number of roms lately all of them Crash hard on me. I think i figured out what is going on but i work 12 hour shifts and if it freezes up and i have to hard reset at work i need to get the things i use most back up on the phone.
Try sprite backup...
After hard reset I can get back to the original state in minutes.
Backup folder
Just copy your cabs twice. Once to the phone for install, and once to your PIM backup folder. That way you'll always have a spare. You can copy those and reinstall your important apps anytime.
Reason For this thread:
New easy to find Quick alternative for NEWBIES wanting to know ho to obtain a safe fast responding Tilt without messing the Device.
I THINK AT&T SCREWEDUP this beautifull piece of TECH with the Bloatware and not including HTC custom add on.
Have to say my Tilt was ok out of the box BUT NOW IS WAY BETTER.
Now I'm not expert (I'm more of a newbie) but theese is something I did and is really True and it WORKED.
I kindly ASK
***** Only people with FACTS/EXPERIENCE will POST HERE what they think is not HERE***********
****** NEWBIES with NO EXPERIENCE or with NO FACTS DO NOT POST HERE just READ, so we can keep it clean for all people without knowledge and no time to read QUESTIONS******
What to do:
Just:
1. Hard Reset
2. Soft Reset before the count down of 3 secs end.
So the AT&T SLOWING BLOATWARE (Crap Software from AT&T like Stupid DEMOS and Tricky Charging services, etc.) are not installed.
All this BLOATWARE make your Tilt SLOW.
Bennefits:
1. Faster Respponse "Overall" and I mean "Overall"
2. The so mentioned Slow DIALER, is no more SLOW, now it respond FASTER.
And let me tell you that I have over 300 contacts in my Tilt.
3. Way more free space for you to install direct to the device all Plugins and tools You Want.
4. When accessing WINDOWS folder, is FASTER.
5. Notice Faster Camera auto focus Shoot.
ETC, ETC, ETC, ETC, ETC.................................
Now I know there are some people who post already discussed topics.
How do I know this? BECAUSE I READ ABOUT IT ABOUT 100's of time about it.
And Because I read and someone should put toguether some specific threads (already saw some of them). And is very hard for me to read a thread that is maybe 80% guessing, I don't know, maybe, I heard of, etc, etc, etc.
I did this for all those people that DON't have time to go thru a Thread with over 50 posts mostly of craps and finding the answer somere in the post # 41.
NOW FOR YOU THAT HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE and PLEASE!!!! no "GUESSING" Tell us about additional beneffits, or what important APPS are missing once You REJECT the BLOATWARE if any by replying to this POST and using the Title:
Title: Beneffits
or
Title: Missing
Thanks!!! to all of you.
Thank you for your effort. I didn't know fo all the benefits from rebooting at the 3-second count, I am to used to the custom ROM's, but this is great guide for those who want to stick with the AT&T ROM.
Its already been talked out many times here and on the ATT forums. Its even been added in the Tilt Specific WiKi already at the bottom and shows the difference an whats installed before and after the bloatware removal:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=TiltSpecificWikiPage
But basically the
Benefit: It removes all the trial ware that you'd probably never buy and frees up space.
Missing: Still not as good as a custom rom that has all the performance tweaks to speed up the device (although the newest official ROM is close). If you know what your doing most of these can be fixed afterwards like the registry tweaks. But if your going to go through all that trouble you might as well just cook your own ROM or find one thats set up to your liking.

But the Problem is that some like to play safe, and I think those are the people without time to read long threads because all the questions.
Then after alot of time reading (again long confusing threads) when you think you found what you where looking for, somewhere appears a known problem you don't want to have.
In my case for example wouldn't like to lose Basic Dialer Alternatives and still confused if it will aslo remove those options if I install any of the dialers or if it will create conflicts and so on, like ohhh!!!!! I install some app and now I'm having problems with something, and then GUESS WHAT, somtimes people end up HARD RESETTING.
Another thing is for example pop up messages that are shown in a specific color that match your theme, then you install something, and BAM POP UP MESSAGES WITH PINK COLORS and so on.
My intention was to make an easy to find info for newbies. Believe me I have read but not alot of time to play, and try to go thru previous POSTS but no response.
Now I put this new threads and for the replies I recived I think I had better results than by going thru old post and actualy thanks for the replies I know that probably people will read this and now will be directed to the wikki.
Like I will do, just Hopping it is complete and accurate info.
Thanks for replies.
I just updated my rom to
RUU_Kaiser_CINGULAR_WWE_3.57.502.2_radio_sign_25.88.40.05_1.65.21.18_Ship.exe
I'm trying to remove the bloatware BUT it reinstalls it everytime. Is there something in the new ROM that prevents me from removing it or is there something new I need to do.
I had no problems removing it from the previous ROM. Thanks

You must do the soft reset before the 3 second countdown.
From what I know of the trick to soft reset worked only with WM6 ROMS, not with the newer WM6.1 ones.
soft reset works with WM6.1
I am one of the "play it safe" guys and the soft reset does work with WM6.1, you just have to catch it BEFORE the customize 3 second countdown even appears. I have used registry tweaks and jacked up my phone plenty, resulting in hard resets and each time i catch it before the countdown. if you miss it, just soft reset and start over again.
Newbs Unite!
Its really not that hard to flash a custom rom, besides you think your device is fast now? Well flash a rom.

I'll second that. I've tried soft resetting at every imaginable point after the restore and every time it just resets and goes right back into the customization garbage.
**After reading Stu's post I'm going to try it one more time. I'll post my results.**
Yessir..it does work. Thanks Stu!
this works on dutty's rom even while it shows the countdown...
Hi All
In my contacts lists I have the windows contacts and the SIM contacts, all there to confuse me.
is there anyway i can only show the windows / outlook contacts when accessing the contacts on my phone ? I dont really want to delete the SIM contacts as I use them in another phone occasionally
Any ideas ?
Cheers

The answer is easy to find. You gotta work for your knowledge on this site.
waste of post instead of helping...i guess so is mine but i would help if i knew or not post at all..
well documented that setting must be cooked into a Rom. If you simply toggle the Registry Key it will reset itself!
Kaiser tweak setting does it for me when advanced cong did not work.

It has worked for me when I have reboot numerious times, after flashing 3 different roms L26, Dutty's and others. Some of the programs I use require soft resets after installation. I usually have to got through at least 4 resets to get my programs and tweaks installed properly.

Nice Answer and terribly helpful that.
I did infact try a search which brought little that would help other than a hundred or so posts containing the odd word.
Please stop having a go at those who want some seemingly simple help advice. If you know it GIVE IT.....
I use a range of different forums and all have been great to use with a wealth of information to help and guide us mortals out of a hole as well as offering info on how to make the best of things. These forums are backed up by some pretty knowledgeable folk. This is one of the best I've used.
However its also one of few forums where some of its members who deem themselves as gods regularly seem to want pound those who simply want some help.
I often read posts on here where people have asked a pretty simple question and got berrated for it. All they get as a response is '...SEARCH..SEARCH...SEARCH......SEARCH.... ' JUST HELP for godsake
C'mon man, theres soooo much info on here ,IT CAN BE hard to search for the right answer especially if the correct search terms or keywords arent being used, it can become frustrating for anyone seeking help and therefor easier just to create a new post. No ones fault just the sign of a great forum.
Please though....have patience and offer help. We're not all gods
Cheers
use the file under my attachment. it will hide ur sim contacts and it will survive soft resets/power down. This cab was posted under L26's V9 thread.

Steve
Glad you found it ssunstone. Some people in these forums can be really anal about giving out info and get off on telling them to search. Sometimes its valid but I see many times when it isnt.
I agree for new users to the site it can be incredibly confusing due to the shear volume of info and threads, added to this is the fear that doing something wrong may brick your expensive device its no wonder that people ask for conformation.
ok i just bought a used tilt and i want to reset everything and start with a clean slate. The next thing i want to do is install the iphone skin and the icube as well as google maps
Can anyone explain to me how to do this step by step because i am brand new to all of this, i don't want to clear out anything i might need to maintain normal use of the phone.
Also there is no added storage card that came with it, just the phones memory itself.

To reset it to a clean state, use ClearStorage in Start>Settings>System.
This will remove all user added data to the phone since it was shipped.
To install Iphone stuff, find the CAB files from this site (I am not 100% what your are after), and then copy them to your device using Active Sync, then use File Explorer on the Device to Run the CAB file.
If you want ot flash any of the custom ROM's on this Site you should start reading the Sticky Threads in the ROM Development Forum and the Wiki Pages on the HTC Kaiser.
Thanks
Dave
