Backlight reverting to 10 seconds - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I set my Battery Power Backlight to turn off if unused for 5 minutes.
Something, somehow, keeps resetting it to 10 seconds. It's driving me nuts.
Anyone else have this experience, and have a possible culprit?
I'm using XDA-Live v1.2 with Spb Pocket Plus and Pocket Diary loaded.

My own experience is a little different.
I set my batt power backlight to dim after 10 seconds, but after a while (the lag varies) it resets back to 30 seconds.

No, not me.

go here in your registry:
\HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\LockLevel
you should see a bunch of keys and a folder called "LockLevel" - inside that folder is the LockLevel key with a value of 1 or 0 - you don't need to go inside that folder. just rename it from "LockLevel" to "LockLevelx" (add an x to the end of the folder's name)...
that's it.

Registry tweak seems to work

Hmm, soft-reset and LockLevel key is back, along with the original that I renamed to LockLevelx.
But son of a gun - I believe this actually works to stop backlight dimming! (which was my other issue - I have had to import registry key after every soft-reset if I wanted backlight to be bright when I hit unlock - the registry setting for Locklevel wouldn't stick after soft-reset).
Now, when I lock with long press of Red End Key, screen dims after about 6 seconds (which is OK), but as soon as I press Left SoftKey to unlock, the screen brightens again, which was what I was after (because outdoors, with dim screen, it is very hard for me to see the little onscreen Unlock icon, so I would try to tap where I thought it should be, and sometimes succeed, sometimes not). Now I'll be able to see it properly, and not miss!
Haven't had it in effect long enough to know if it fixes the issue I originally brought up, of stopping Backlight timeout reverting to 10 seconds. If that is fixed too, this is an awesome double whammy!
Now, HTH did you know or figure out that this registry tweak would do this? Please share your genius!

I have done this (renamed Locklevel to Locklevelx). It works, The backlight is now on when you turn the Cruise on again. This is OK. But I have noticed that the screen is "redrawn" twice, so the screen is on, goes black again and then on again, all within a second. Still I think it is annoying. Does anybody else noticed this. Does anybody know a solution?

I tried the small app "Bright Lock" and it changes the locklevel key to 10 (full brightness) at power On, but has the side effect of changing the key "Battery Timeout" to 7 (seconds) which dims the display in 7 seconds when the phone is unlocked as well as locked.
Haven't found a way to get a bright screen at power-up to see the screen to unlock it (with a short timer like 7 seconds), then revert to the backlight timer setting (like 30 seconds or more) once unlocked!
EDIT
In any case, if you REMOVE Bright Lock, then re-name the DeviceLock key like this thread describes and soft reset, BINGO, the Backlight comes on bright for about 7 seconds when locked AND it stays On for the duration of the settings>backlight timer when un-locked!
Strange! The LockLevel key is restored after the reset, but with a 0 setting on my Kaiser.

My problem wiht backlight is somewhat different. I have gone into the settings, and Unchecked the box for "Turn off backlight if device is not use for " on both battery power and external power. I originally tried setting it for the MAX time.
I have tried the fix in this thread.
And my backlight goes off in 15 seconds, unless I have it hooked to power. this is very annoying.
Actually, I think it is going into standby. Is there a difference? If I have it doing somethign that will take longer than 15 sec, i have to tap the screen to keep it from going into standby and stopping the operation.
Any other thoughts?

Well, I got my issue fixe. On the ROM that I have (Alex's latest Cube rom) there is a menu here: Backlight Settings, choose menu, then Power.
Then thre is an advanced tab, and also there is a setting to turn backlight off if on battery. i changed the setting there and I'm good to go.

All of a sudden, my screen keeps turning off after 10 seconds. I had it set to 5 minutes on battery power.
I tried to uncheck both boxes and nothing happened, it still turns off after 10 seconds. I also tried the LockLevelx thing and that didn't work.

Can someone help me with this? I have no idea why this is happening and it's really annoying. I can't do anything without having the backlight turn off.
I went into HKLM/ControlPanel/Backlight and I see the following values but I don't know what to change them to.

I had the same problem. It really drive one nuts. Mine was related to locking the phone, using the today's lock. I'm now using u2s2 iphone like lock (with sleuth rom) works GREAT.
best

I too made the reg change as mentioned early. It worked but too well, now it never dims no matter what time is selected. I'm running the AT&T rom. Anybody ele having this problems.
tomy51

looks like setting locklevel to 0 after set backlight to a desidered value fix the problem. at least i've tried it on my atek s200 and problem is solved also after soft reset pda

I uninstalled BackLight program and tried the 'LockLevelx' method - it only worked for a few soft resets, then no-matter what my brightness setting was set to, the screen would remain slightly dim. It also changed my digital clock in top right hand corner to analog clock.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried the official hotfix http://www.htc.com/us/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=67&cat=all

I had the same problem. It was caused by the lockout exchange policy. It was an easy fix though - I used the utility on http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/...curity-policy-for-windows-mobile-devices.aspx to remove the exchange policy and now everything just peachy.

The update on HTC US tilt support page worked for me

Backlight Fix
I tried both the official backlight fix and the LockLevelX registry fix for my Tilt (offical AT&T 6.1 ROM minus the bloatware) and neither was working. After reading that the issue might be tied to the autolocking of the phone I tried this: I deleted the LockLevelX key (since a new LockLevel key was created after a soft reset), deactivated the autolocking of my phone, and voila- the phone works like it's supposed to. I did not uninstall the official backlight fix. I have since reactivated the autolocking feature of my phone and so far, so good. I don't have any problems with the screen staying dim either. I hope that helps.

Backlight problem

My screen will be darker after 10 sec.
I can set this again to 5 min. and after a few on and offs it will be back at 10 sec.
This is very annoying!
I thought i had found the problem, but it wasn't.
HKCU/ControlPanel/Backlight/BatteryTimeout setting up to 300. This is 5 minutes. It counts in seconds. But this isn't working.
Please can anyone help me?? A lot more have this problem.
I have the same problem, anyone the solution?

yes, my backlight stay's also on for 1 minute(my setting)...hope the sound problem is also gone..
It is a bug in keypad locking
I think the backlight problem only occurs if you are using the keylock feature by pressing the end call button for a couple of seconds.
You can try it out yourself:
1) set your backlight settings to whatever you want and verify it works as intended.
2) Now just normally switch of your phone (not locking the keypad) by pressing the power button, switch back on and verify that the setting is still correct.
3) Then do a soft reset and again verify that the setting is correct.
4) Now lock the keypad by using the end call button (press a couple of seconds until locked).
5) Now unlock the phone and check the backlight settings: they are put back on the default values!! I guess it is a bug in the keypad lock functionality.
Btw, step 2) and 3) are just for verification, you may skip these to reproduce the bug.
Actually, if you use the lock feature of the device (for instance by enabling AutoDeviceLock in the registry, see tweak 18 in the stickied Diamond tweaks thread) the settings are also reset to the default values.
Is this the case for everybody? Or is it just me that it seems the locking feature contains bugs.
FYI...I had this issue from the start when I was running the Asia HK 1.34 ROM image. I flashed it using HardSPL and put the Europe 1.35 image on the device and have not had the problem since. All backlight values work normally as of now....I recommend this if your device is the HK ROM and you're having the issue. Not sure if it'll work for you, but it worked for me....
The solution is simply
You have to change DWORD LockLevel present in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\BackLight\LockLevel\ to 0 (zero)
And now your time of standby don't change anymore

Backlight randomly defaults back to 10 Sec

Hi Guys,
Although I set my backlight to stay on for 2 minutes, it randomly defaults back to the 10 second timeframe.
Why does it do this and can it be prevented?
I have the same problem. I did a hard reset, and it was fine, until I hit lock, now it's happening all over again. I adjusted it in kaisertweaks, but it just ignores it. Screen always dims after 10 seconds.
Check backlight and power setting for both battery and mains.
If you are also using S2U2, check the backlight settings there also. Whatever it says on S2U2, it will override the other settings.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
MAC

Disappearing Dialer

Sometimes when I make a call, after listening to some voice prompts it asks me to press some numbers. When I go to do that, the screen has already darkened and the dialer is not visible. If I hit another key to attempt to "wake up the screen", it goes on hold or does something else.
There's got to be a simple solution to this, but I can't figure out what it is.
Exactly my problem
I have my backlight set to go out after 5 min. Works fine in every app. except the dialer. It goes black after 10 sec.
Anyone knows a remedie ?

Pressing the power button works for me in WM6.1. This turns the backlight back on allowing you to use the touchscreen again.
agree with the post #3 and ALSO...
post #3 in this thread is what i USED to do on wm6 as well as wm6.1
you might also want to look into disabling "Fast Sleep" or disallowing "Sleep" during phone calls using KaiserTweak...i got tired of the method in post #3 so i set the "Sleep" option to disallow in KaiserTweak, which automatically disables "Fast Sleep" also

and you must keep pressing those buttons untill the bootup screen shows
thanks szkic i`ve tried doing it that way and even holding the buttons down right up until the home page but still nothing ???
if i have a cid unlocked phone or if it has olinex 1.93 installed on it would this be the reason why it doesn`t hard reset? i`m a noob so to the masters out their that probably sounds laughable lol.
another hard reset option.
is your phone with sprint? their user guide states: screen.
Hard Reset
You can also perform a hard reset (also known as a full reset). A hard reset should only be performed if a
normal reset does not solve a system problem. After a hard reset, the device is restored to its default
settings—the way it was when you first purchased it and turned it on. Any programs you installed, data you
entered, and settings you customized on your device will be lost. Only Windows Mobile software and other
preinstalled programs will remain.
To perform a hard reset:
1. Pull out the stylus.
2. Remove the back cover.
3. With the device turned on, press and hold the Volume Down and Enter keys, and then press the Reset
button with the stylus tip.
4. Release the RESET button, but continue pressing the Volume Down and Enter keys until you see the
following message on the screen:
5. Release the Volume Down and Enter keys, and then press the Volume Up key to perform the hard reset, or
press any other button to cancel the reset.
I have yet to be able to do a hard rest (using either method) on the first try. I usually have to attempt it at least 2 or 3 times.
not with sprint i`m from essex in the uk. the diamond was an orange contract phone originally but i`m sure that doesn`t stop it from hard reseting as i`ve flashed it about 15 times now with different roms lol. can someone just clarify the steps to hard reseting...... do i press volume down and the enter button at the exact same time or is it press volume down then enter or vice versa and how long do i have to push the reset button for???? confused.com lol
I got a Sprint, found this on another forum somewhere (ppcgeeks I think). The instructions are incomplete. You must also hold down the Power button, in addition to to the volume and enter buttons when you hit the reset. And yes, you must be a three-handed monkey to do it. I'm really wondering who HTC hires as engineers. I tried it 10 times without holding the power button, could not get a hard reset. I tried it once with the power button (after a lot of contortioning) and it worked the first time. They just screwed up the instructions.
thanks mate will give it a try and let you know how i get on. if it works i think the wiki section should be updated lol
still not working even when i press power on button, volume down, enter and reset grrr !!!
Ok, just did it again to figure out exactly how I did it. Hold down the power, vol down, and enter buttons, then hit reset. Keeping all three buttons down, release reset. Still holding them down, wait about 3 seconds, then the hard reset menu will come up. Make sure you've got that enter button pushed in.
It's really damn hard to do. But I did it twice in a row, so I know it works.
If it starts to soft reset, just do it again right away. Then it should get to the hard reset menu.
EDIT:
Added photo. Notice the thumb is pushing up the stylus. If someone has a better method, please show it.
EDIT 2:
Also notice this is a Sprint model. Do the GSM versions have the reset button next to the battery, or on the bottom like a normal HTC phone? Such a pain in the ass to have it behind the cover.
must have tried about 50 times now lol still nothing????? thanks for showing me the pic i think i tried it that way before on a tytn 2.
Found out there is another way to hard reset the diamond, if the normal method doesn't work for you. FYI, I'm using a Rogers-branded diamond
1. Power the device Off.
2. Press and hold the Center Navigation Control Key and Volume Down buttons, and at the same time, press the POWER button once.
3. Continue to hold the Center Navigation Control Key and Volume Down buttons until you get the Hard Reset confirmation screen and then press the Volume Up Key to reset the device.
NOTE: Once the Hard Reset has been completed, allow the Automatic Customization process to complete: failure to do so can cause poor device performance and/or malfunction.

Either do it the way the poster above has said (didnt know about that one!) or by pressing the volume down and enter buttons down at the same time (keep pressed), and then reset by pushing in and releasing the reset button with the stylus, keep volume and enter down until hard reset screen arrives.
I'll bet the problem is that you aren't keeping the enter button or the vol down button pressed down hard enough or long enough, so it's not actually pressed even though you think it is. This is where I fell foul the first few times.
thanks for all the help on this but after lots of frustrating hours i`ve give up lol is there a code you can enter like the hard reset on a nokia?

Solved ..
The problem was the screen protector as it was preventing the [Center Navigation Control] to be pressed properly although it is pressed easily during normal use but not for hard reset for some reason.
Once removed it worked first time

Anyway to put the Tilt to Auto-Sleep?

I always have to manually press the side button to put it in "sleep" mode. My settings in the phone says to do it after 4 minutes but all it does it barely dim it down. Is there a fix to actually make it "auto sleep" or at least turn off the screen if not used within a time (again setting it under back light nor phone doesn't seem to work). Thanks
There're actually 2 functions: Backlight Dim and Power off (Sleep). It also depends on your ROM. If you use OEM (default factory), the option should be checked for both Backlight and Power. Try it out.
Further reading your manual should help .. or you can try the Kaiser Wiki here .. do a google, do a search ..
