TyTN II: Stuck Keyboard Fails to Slide Open - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

The first sign of a problem occurred when I hit the power button and the phone started to boot up. I was surprised as it had not been shut down. I also noticed the keyboard appeared stuck and would not slide open to any degree whatsoever. I inspected the phone for any obvious sign of damage and there was none. The phone only booted as far as the unlock screen and then promptly shut off. I plugged the phone in its charger and tried again.
This same thing happened several more times and I got a sinking feeling that my phone was seriously fu*%ked up. I let it charge for a bit while I looked at HTC's and XDA Websites for any threads of this being a previously reported issue. My searches failed to turn up anything relating to a stuck keyboard. So I placed a support call to HTC North America (866- 449-7358) and promptly connected with a support rep named Larry. He was working out of a call center in Toronto.
The rep was not aware of any reported issues that would prevent the keyboard from sliding open. As far has the boot up process was concerned, his suggestion was to perform a hard reset and see if that would help. Before trying that I wanted to better understand why the keyboard was stuck but he could offer no help. When he learned that I had purchased the phone from Mobile Planet he said that it "was probably imported from the UK and that I would have to get any additional support from there." I considered this as lamely passing the buck and ended that call.
I placed renewed focus on the locked slider mechanism to see if there was any visible reason why it was stuck closed. After finding nothing, I then began to pry carefully around the edges and see just how much physical separation I could achieve at any one spot without causing undue stress. During this process the keyboard suddenly shifted a bit and I was able to carefully slide it out. I immediately noticed the SIM card latch was unlatched and hanging open. I closed and locked it, then powered the phone up once more. To my surprise and immense relief, it booted right up and remained on till I could unlock it. Everything worked fine. Needless to say I'm now one happy camper.
Conclusion:
If the keyboard on your Kaiser fails to open for any reason and the device keeps shutting down, an open SIM latch may be the problem. Try to gently and I do mean gently, pry at different points to gain partial clearance for the keyboard mechanism to shift. It might be all you need to resolve the issue. I hope this helps someone in the future.

Thank you. Mine is stuck right now. Its driving me crazy.
Update. I just did what you stated and it worked.
Solution for Stuck Slide Out on HTC Tilt
1. GENTLY use stylus or pointy slim object to lift the top part. Lift from the area where the sim card is located
2. Lift GENTLY until you have seperation, then slide out keyboard.

way cool!
what i'm curious about is how the sim door can come loose all on its own especially when the keyboard is closed...it has such a bad-ass lock on it...i swear, i really have to fiddle with the lock to get it to open when i need to remove the SIM.
...or perhaps it happens when one forgets to lock the SIM door followed by unintentionally closing the keyboard...?

ok so here's my issue (tilt falling apart)

a couple weeks ago i cracked my screen. I bought a new one and replaced it myself. All was well until i tried to text with my physical keyboard and discovered that the i,m,n,k, and period keys were all unresponsive, these keys are also all in the same area.
I took apart my phone again and discovered that there is a thin strip that connects the keyboard to the unit. on this strip are 7-8 parallel lines running atop it(not touching). I noticed that the far right line had a break in it with a width much less than a needle head.
I don't know much about board circuitry but i think the lines are made of copper. I've voided my tilt warranty by opening up my phone so i'm here for suggestions. Are there general cell phone repair shops? Should i attempt to solder it myself? or is there no hope?
now concerning software my phone is out of control. When i try to message someone with the rest of my physical keys my phone will randomly insert enters and spaces into my typing which is really annoying and forces me to use a slow virtual keyboard. My phone screen will turn back on when i press the little side button, and when i have a call it will randomly put people on hold.
My phone will alos freeze up some times and an error message will popup with the option to dump some sort of file which i have to to continue. Is this some sort of virus on my phone?
I have the hyperdragon saphire rom with the radio that came with it. Do i just need to reflash? I apologize for the length of this thread all responses are appreciated.
as for the software craziness i'm sure you have tried the system restore(if you havent do it: shut off device, hold down the two 'blank buttons' and holding down the soft-reset button with the stylus at the same time then press the SEND button [green call button]) so since you probably have definitely reflash. My advice for repairing your phone is try to determine if the price for getting it repaired by a general repair shop or if repairing it yourself is better (because they might charge you who knows what )
For the sleep issue go to Settings/System/Key Lock and change it too 'Lock all buttons except power button'(mabye you did this). Also it is possible to have a virus on your phone although a system restore or reflash should fix this.
"I've voided my tilt warranty by opening up my phone so i'm here for suggestions"
actually... if u look at the phone the "warranty void" sticker is under the battery, not under the LCD. I cracked my LCD before and replaced it, after doing so, my SIM wouldnt register (phone took a heavy hit breaking the screen and sim slot). I figured what the hell and called AT&T and swapped it under warranty... They didnt say anything and I got a brand new Tilt back

Touch screen not responding after hard reset..hardware problem?

I have searched for solutions for the past 2 days but cant find one, if i missed it or this post is redundant , i apologize in advance.
Now my tilt is driving me crazy. It started last week when The touch screen wasnt working, but i fixed it by doing a couple of soft resets. then all the sudden, everytime i slide my keyboard out, the touch screen would stop responding. this went on for a day, then yesterday, when i tired to use the keyboard, the screen went blank, like the light died or something. but when i put it back on portrait, the screen would light up again.
A few moments later, the touch was responding, tried to use the keypad then the screen went blank..tried soft resets about 5 times and uninstalled all recent added programs (skyfire) ..finally the screen was working but the touch still wasnt working.
So this morning, i had the bright idea to do a hard reset....dumbest idea ever cos now its stuck at the screen where i have to "tap the screen to set up your wm device" and guess what..the touch screen isnt responding
plz i really need help with this. all so , i have a broken tilt.., well lcd screen is cracked...can i try to dismantle both tilts and replace the screens?
Ok, i used Code Factory's Remote screen alignment to bypass the alignment, but if i cant use the touch screen or the keyboard, the phone is pretty much useless for sending any information or making calls..is there a way to fix this?
I have had this same issue with my tilt. I could use the scroller on the left side of the unit to navigate but no touch screen. Both times that this has happened to me I removed the screen protector that I had on and restored a backup that I had on my storage card (I run a backup weekly). This has always fixed my issue. You could try another hard reset, not sure if that will help but do you get any lights on the keyboard when you slide it open? Is your tilt less than a year old because there is a manufacturer's warranty too.
Jim
when i slide the keyboard, i do get lights on the keyboard but not on the screen...it just goes dead..but when i slide it back in, the screen comes to life.
I cant do another hard reset cos i have to input the "1,2,3,4" code.
Also , the phone just got out of the 1yr warranty this month...awesome
I want to buy a replacement screen with a new digitizer but i need to be sure that is the problem.. ive searched for this keyboard problem but still have no answers
Now I'm having the same issue, touch not responding. I first noticed it about two days ago, when I slide the keyboard out, I could type just fine, but when I went to send the message the touch screen wouldnt work, so I'd close the keyboard and it would work. well yesterday it stopped working all together, so i used my d-pad and did a sprite restore and it started working again. But then On my way home i hit the lock button, and it stopped working after that, and I couldn't get it unlocked. I used the inner soft key to hit the first part of unlock, but then I couldnt ever figure which button to hit to get the on screen part of the unlock. So I had no choice but to do a hard reset, and just like highoct now I'm stuck on the stylus setup , and the touch still doesnt respond. does anybody esle have any suggestions ? Thanks in advance.
You can use the Code Factory's Remote screen alignment to bypass the alignment.
If the touch screen is the only problem, you can do one of two things if you are no longer under warranty;
1. Fix it yourself. You will have to buy a new Lcd screen with new digitizer at ebay and use this site http://www.pdacenter.ru/razborka/razbor_htc_kaiser/ to open up your tilt and replace it
2. Send it to a repair shop, I had two tilts and sent the one with the broken screen to www.missionrepair.com got it back in a within a week, $89.00 plus shipping
here is the link : http://www.missionrepair.com/Mission_Repair_AT_T_Cell_Phone_Repairs_and_Upgrades_s/321.htm
I still have the same tilt with the original problem..havent found a solution yet
Oh yeah, I did manage to do a hard reset again, but now the screen is just white. I can hear the sound of it booting up but it still has a white screen. I tired going to the Bootloader screen ( Camera and power at the same time)...still have the white screen. I believe its a hardware problem but i don't know what it is...any ideas?
Ok now I've done a hard flash, using the same HTC kaiser rom 6.1 and it fixes the problem for a little bit, until the first time I slide out the keyboard , then the screen stops working again, any suggestions ?
iPhone 3G Screen Repair...finally an affordable answer
If you are reading this, you are most likely in the same dilemma I was in. I dropped my phone and picked it up only to find out that the glass screen was cracked. I took my broken phone to apple and found out it would cost me $199. I then was told about iPhone 3G Screen Repair. They offered the iPhone 3G glass screen repair for only 69.99. They repaired my phone the same day they received it. I was very happy with the repair!

I know this thread is a bit old but was searching d forum for possible solutions cos yesterday i developed the same exact problem on my kaiser for no apparent reason!..flashing it hasnt helped and now im stuck on the wm setup screen..when u say u still have the same tilt with the original problem do you mean that the repair was unsuccessful? have you tried reparing it yourself? Thanks
I just started to have the same problem, it started out with the touch not responding (which a few soft resets fixed) and now the whole screen doesn't function unless i slid out the keyboard or if i jiggle it around and open it a couple of time i can usually find a spot that allows the screen to function with the keyboard closed. If i leave it in this position for about an hour the touch starts responding again, wtf. This is very inconvenient because as soon as you move the screen even just a little it will take me like half an hour to find the position which allows the phone to function.

same thing happened to me 3 days ago. touchscreen has just stopped responding.
it still worked when i slided my keyboard out, but only when it was out. then i realized it won't work at all (!) after soft reset. however, i could make it work again like that when i did the soft reset with the keyboard out. weird.
i tried searching, and decided to make a hard reset, flash a new rom, etc, etc., but no more touchscreen. at all. the device doesn't feel any touch in any case. nothing. i bypassed the beggining tap here with the storage card trick. (i've read it somewhere on the forum).
now i can only use my kaiser with the hw buttons, the keyboard, and that's it. no touch. really weird. please if anyone has any updates, solutions, anything, post. sniff sniff
mine doesn't have anything on the screen unless i slide it out, if i have it closed anymore, it just doesn't work at all.
try this:
ive just replaced my barely functioning lcd by myself, after living with it sometimes registered the stylus jumping around when i used the stylus. but before you change your lcd, here is a couple of tips for you guys:
1) try sliding out the keyboard. hold one finger in the middle of the keyboard and another on the back side of the phone, and squeeze hard, but careful. it might be that the flat cable between the screen part and the main part has loosened a bit from its socket, this could help it back in.
2) try sqeezing the hang up button hard. this might help the lcd-cable correctly back in its socket if it is loose.
im saying that this MIGHT help, if youre lucky. most likely you have to open the phone and squeeze the connectors back in yourself, or actually change the entire lcd. anyways, let me know what works for you!!

well, i tried both tips, but they didn't work. i'd like to say a big thanks anyway!
then i grabbed the kaiser service manual and took my device apart into pieces. i reconnected pretty much all the cables and stuff, but still no touchy. any further ideas?
you should try replacing the screen. im happy to say that this screen from this seller on eBay worked for me: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250539984183

screen unlocking itself

it's my first post on this board so a Big Hello to Everyone
I acquired a D2 a couple of weeks ago and I'm still learning my way around it.
There is one thing that annoys me big time though. the phone keeps unlocking itself when in its pouch. After investigation, i found out that by pressing the stylus edge of the handset it would actually activate the stylus detection switch, which is seen by the phone as the stylus being pulled out hence unlocking the screen.
Has someone noticed this or did I get a faulty phone?
Is there a way of disableing the stylus detection either via the registry or any other settings?
Thanks in advance ....
Looks like a faulty phone - mine's never done that, and I've just tried pushing quite hard on the stylus-side and nothing happens.
Best get it replaced!
problem is... it doesn't do it all the time
try removing the back cover, lock the phone and push the stylus at about the groove level. Does it unlock?
I thought you meant that yours did it with the cover on?
well...it does it with the cover on too but not everytime. I think the cover pushes the stylus which in turn pushes the switch and unlocks the screen. However if i remove the cover and push the stylus directly it does it all the time. I was wondering if the thing happens to all handsets or just mine...
Well I can safely say it doesn't happen to mine.
hi!
Mine does unlock itself too. I was also wondering if I had a faulty phone...
I've been playing around with different buttons, but u r right...whenever I touch it near the Stylus edge it unlocks.
I have installed Pocket Shield and after seeing your post I've been able of avoiding the annoying behaviour by unchecking the option Unlock>On stylus out under Unlocking tab.
Thanks for the clue!!!

Power button failure

First off, I know there are multiple threads not only here on xda but elsewhere on the internet that describe other cases of Nexus One power button failures. I believe mine is different.
I suspect this has something to do with it being submerged in a cup of beer for a half a second a couple weeks back (never letting that person touch my phone again btw). It's very intermittent and has gotten progressively worse, to the point where I think it'll eventually die and at that point I'll need to turn the phone on some other way. I think somehow it is a "short" electrically inside the device. It can sit on my desk and randomly turn on and off by itself, as well as make the reboot/power off menu pop up, as if I'm holding down the power button. This makes using the phone extremely irritating, especially now, as the problem worsens. I can't do much in Recovery, at least CWM, because the power button either turns off the screen or goes to the previous menu. And while typing, the phone screen will either turn off, or the reboot menu will pop up, and I'll accidentally tap something else. Frustrating. My question is basically...is there a way to disable the power button without opening the device? I'm guessing probably not, but it's worth a shot...I purchased the phone in 04/2010, from a third party, and it's no longer under warranty. I was planning on waiting to get the Galaxy Nexus, and if not, the Samsung Galaxy S 4G. I've been dreading the day I need to retire my beloved Nexus One....and it looks like it's going to be sooner than I wanted.
Thanks for any replies.
Normally I would say there is probably still a little bit of water in the power button housing but since it was a few weeks back I doubt it. But I guess you could always try the bag of rice trick. If then I don't know and you may have to open it up :/
I had the same problem for about 5 months and it has sense sorted its self out without me doing anything. Now the power button functions 100% (knock on wood).
I had placed it top down in my cup holder while driving for 3 hours and had not noticed a bit of condensation from that mornings water glass. I got home, grabbed my phone, and noticed a wet spot on my pocket and my phone had water on the top. It was in the Case-mate case in my sig and I let it dry over night and it worked the next day after blow drying the inside. But a week later the power button was clicking on and off. That was the longest period of use my G1 has seen sense I bought my N1.
Some days it would go on for an hour+ and would wreck the battery life. I tried everything and was unable to find a way to disable the power button presses.
I did not open the phone even though it was a month out of warranty. My assumption is there was still some sort of moisture inside that was causing a short. Because you never had a warranty in the first place, I would say your best bet is to take it apart and let it sit in rice for at least a couple days.

Left side touch screen misbehaving after wet

Hi,
Last week I used to be outside with much rainy condition.
Though it never got totally under water, many times it's screen got wet with substantial rain drops.
Slowly, phone started misbehaving with following symptoms,
1. Around 10% of left side of touch screen doesn't show response. I enabled show touches from developer option and when I try to touch left side, say "a" letter in keyboard, it doesn't show touches and pointer jumps immediately to left edge.
2. Many times, I am not able to unlock phone as no touch are detected.
3. After unlock, many times though I am not touching phone, it shows couple of pointers (I enabled show touches in developer option to trace this) on left edge. It keeps moving resulting in erratic behavior, say screen zooms in and out, some icons clicked automatic, deleted automatic etc.
4. Sometimes I noticed that capacitive buttons are also not responding.
For all above, I have to off (not complete switch off)and on the phone. After few attempts, it becomes responding except point 1 above.
I have reflashed ROM (Vivikat) just to ensure it's not software issue.
Now it seems hardware issue with following two possibilities...
1. It's matter of some moisture in phone only. I have to try hard to dry out all moisture and phone will become responding.
2. Digitizer has some issue and may call for replacement (I don't want to do that...:crying.
Can you guys share your views/experience and advise?

I just had touch screen issues but not with water or rain. It was the CPU. Almost whenever I overclocked it, I had touch screen issues. Both misbehaving and not behaving at all. Change the CPU frequency and restart the phone and see what happens. :good:

Thanks for your reply.
I have never overclocked my device.
However, I tried to underclocked it if by any chance, it can solve the issue.
But issue still there.
A small portion of left column on touch screen seems not responding or giving erratic behavior.
Does, water can damage digitizer to that extent that can not be recovered even after drying
Or, I should keep hope and wait more before I go for digitizer replacement

If the digitizer is damaged, it is probably done. But if you can open the open, check the digitizer and see if there are any things stuck on it. My recommendation: ask an engineer to open it and clean it with the special spray they use to clean electronic parts. Maybe the water has had only a side effect and it will be fixed by cleaning the digitizer.
