File Sharing - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Does anyone know of any file sharing programs which can be used on the AT&T tilt / Dutty's ROM v3 final? Something like limewire mobile? lol I know of WinMobile Torrent but thats not exactly what I am needing. Any ideas?
Thanks in Advance!

bump for information...

I don't think 24 hours required a bump.
This board has openly stated in various places that it will not tolerate warez, therfore by you posting a request for warez sharing software on your PPC is not going to be warmly welcomed.
I know that there are legitimate uses for p2p systems, but the majority of it is not. Besides, I don't think most PDAs have the capacity do they!?

In response to your comment - I don't mean to be rude but was it really necessary? My question was regarding a P2P File sharing program for the pocket PC - thats it. I didn't ask for a "program to download warez" material, I didn't ask for something to share illegal porn, I didn't ask for anything illegal. As you mentioned - yes, there are a lot of legitimate uses of a P2P file sharing program, and thats exactly what I intend to use it for. I just felt it to be a little insulting that you felt it so necessary to discipline me for an act which required no actions. In conclusion - we are all here for the same reason; which is to help each other with Apps, flashing new ROM's, and to diagnose problems. Although I am very new here - I have gained and learned a lot from it - however, one very important thing i have learned is if someones actions are out of line or a post needs to be removed; a "moderator" will step in and control the situation.

I don't think p2p necessarily means warez - after all, IIRC, even Pocket PC Thoughts or AximSite frontpaged a p2p software review / announcement some one or two years ago...

You must live by the mantras of RIAA and MPAA, bad boy bad boy! *spanks*. You wouldn't call a person owning a car, a gun, an axe or a knitting needle a murderer just because the person has in his/her posession something that can be used to commit crimes. Heck, the main cause of criminal activities is our human brains, full of lust, desire, madness and irrational thoughts. BAN BRAINS!
I suggest you load up your favorite P2P application and download the completely free movie, "Steal This Film" 1 and 2 for some information and input on the general concept of sharing information and its groundbreaking role in developing our human communities from sticks 'n stones to p0rn and the Internet. Very interesting and a taste of "the other" side in this everlasting debate.

Aside from the current discussion....Does anyone know of a good P2P file sharing program for the Pocket PC? LOL

I use WMTORRENT very beautiful and fast
Ciao

do you need to buy it. If you use the unregistered version will it still work and what are the limitations ??

what i do is use Remote desktop to log into my home computer start the downloading process, then use total commander to access my computer through ftp and load it to my phone that way i don't have to keep my phone on while its downloading from the torrent.

wow seems complicated..
anyhow i dont leave my home computer on all the time..
senario.. Im away from home for a week doing night shifts.
I downloaded a wmtorrent cab installed but have not cracked the program.
I'm trying to download a tv program.
It seems to be working just wondered if it will let me complete.play the file if its unregistered ?

I have been looking myself and haven't found much other than WinMobile Torrent. Instead I plan on trying the iPhone interface for uTorrent. I have used the original web interface before and its been quite reliable. Its quite nice to start tv show downloads while away from the house. My plan is to start them from my phone and have them go into a folder monitored by Orb to stream them to my phone.

Be careful...
If this thread turns into a conversation about WAREZ it will be closed.
Remember, we are walking afine line so we do have to be careful and considerate of other members here.

Old thread, but here's a working freeware Gnutella app for Windows Mobile.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359754

I had no idea gnutella is still working! Thx for links
I'm using wmTorrent and wmFTP server on my Kaiser (EOS4.888.FIRE rom) all work perfect, but i only turn on ftp when needed.
You know keeping bluetooth share open may give you some unexpected results in public places... I got plenty music files, some videos, few ebooks and others lol people love to share in general

How's it legal?

I have seen people post on here comments that something is warez and warez is not tolerated on this site. For example, the maps needed for TomTom. So my question as mentioned in the title, how's it legal to rip roms from other devices and modify them to work on all devices? Or if it is not legal, why is it tolerated where warez is not?
Thanks
Yeah, there's a line there somewhere. I think.
Just depends if the moderators are interested in the software or not.......

AFAIK there is a kind of morality behind it - if you can buy the software, and you are using it for free, its considered Warez.
If you cant buy the software then its considered that you are not taking food from anyone's mouth, and its tolerated.
Of course you could say you are reducing the competitive advantage of the other devices e.g. taking Omnia's widgets and moving it to a HTC Touch Diamond, and thats when things get messy, but I think this is generally how its seen and how it works.
Surur
If it's HTC software and you're using it for an HTC phone, it's asssumed that it's licensed for use on your device and acceptable. A bit of a stretch, but HTC has never, to my knowledge, requested that files be removed from XDA-Devs servers, so there seems to be tacit permission or simply active non-enforcement.
Same for AT&T appz &c if it's an AT&T phone or you're using their service, I suppose (likewise for other carriers and their apps).
If a software being distributed is a redistribution of a freeware (which should have allowed for redistribution in the freeware license), it's acceptable. As well, sharewares should not come preregistered or with serials or any means to circumvent proper registration and doing so or requesting such things gets posts deleted and accounts banned.
So that applies to non-OS/OEM/Carrier apps distributed in ROMs.
Because of various reasons (e.g. the fact that WinMo never really took off as much as Bill & Co. would have liked, and because OEMs and carriers don't want to spend money to license and prepare distributions of the WinMo OS thereby making customers less likely to invest in soon-to-be-obsolete devices, and I like to think a bit of respect for the hackers who manage to port and distro better ROMs than the carriers and OEMs), Bill & Co have decided not to send their anti-piracy witch hunters after WinMo ROMs. It is actively NOT enforced. (Different meaning from 'not actively enforced' and that's intentional.)
Because of the greyness in this area you will notice that no MS products are hosted on XDA-Dev servers.
However, to allay any fears on your part, if your OEM or carrier has provided version n of an OS, or released a free upgrade, or you have paid for a ROm upgrade for your phone's model, your hardware is licensed to use that version.
So, if you are truly worried about breaching laws that aren't, in fact, being enforced, do not upgrade to an OS version not distributed by your carrier/OEM or that has not been licensed as free.
I personally think that while the developer of WinMo turns one eye blind to these activities, the porting of WinMo versions to different hardwares is something they keep their other eye on closely as it's to their advantage and an area of activity and innovation that they probably exploit. Because they aren't stupid.
Does that make things clearer for anyone?
P.S.
I should disclose that I am not, in fact, qualified as a legal counsellor or a lawyer. I only play one on TV.
;-)
IIRC, the thought is "If the software is offered already in the shipped ROM, it's paid for and OK. As long as that ROM is ported in whole to another device." I believe the mods look down upon pulling 3rd party software from ROM's to use in another ROM that the software was not originally offered.
I believe that's the general consensus, though I may be wrong.
from legal stand point. nothing that is done here is considered as stealing. Consider this , you use linux an open source format. you can modify to accomdate your needs. which these tools are suppled from the linux distributer. Or it is like adding speakers and a good radio to your new car how ever you want to look at it.

if the software can be ripped out of a stock rom from AT&T, etc, then it can be shared here. If it is software you must buy, like the maps for tomtom, then you cannot post them here. You can rip the tomtom software from an AT&T rom, so it's posted here. You must buy the maps, so they're not. Does that help a little?

by owning a device that the ROM's are compatible with, you've already paid a license fee to M$ in a sense.
So, Downloading updated/patched/ported versions of the same product is allowed -- you already have a license.
If you post GameShoe#124 - well... everyone here is not ensured to have a license for the game. If the game is not a trial/freeware program, or otherwise checking to ensure you paid for the license to use it (such as a key).. then you're distributing content that is not owned or licensed & available to you.

Well, here's something to think about then: I could get a number of WM 6.1 ROMs as an upgrade to my WM 6 Kaiser but checking HTC's official site, there are no upgrades offered for my IMEI #. If we go strictly by the rules, the availability of WM 6.1 for me could be considered warez. On the other hand, tolerating this kind of relatively harmless behavior would certainly boost an OS's popularity.
In fact, one of the main reasons for my choosing HTC WM was the availability of these great number of ROMs, migrating from UIQ3.
There is a fine line, my definition would be: as long as the specific post does not have a negative financial impact on sales, it should be allowed.

My point is simply that it was unfortunate that your first post is to get a dig in on the moderators' objectivity. When you know how much people complain about them and to them for doing a mostly thankless job, which they get no compensation for i might add, you'll understand why I don't think those type of comments are funny. I definitely understand that not all jokes are taken in the light in which they were intended; however, some jokes are best left unsaid. I certainly won't hold it against you as, just like you, i'm merely sharing my opinion.

No, you haven't. The device was licensed for use with the M$ product by the OEM. That license is restricted to a specific version, or versions on specific hardware
When the OEM or Carrier licenses an OS or an OS update that they are allowed to distribute, there is still an End User Licensing Agreement, and people have to read them to know what is allowed.
When one of our amazing XDA chefs cooks up a ROM or a new OS or a significant OS update and you install it on a device for which distribution was not licensed, this is warez. Read the EULA if in doubt.
Again, that's why XDA doesn't actually host those ROMs. Maybe official ROMs, but not hacked/ported ROMs.
However, it is currently an M$ policy to not enforce what is essentially warez distribution of the Win-Mobile OS. So I wouldn't worry about getting arrested or sued for installing one of these ROMs.
If M$ does decide to enforce, they don't go after the end users but the people distributing. So, end users, relax.
If you feel ethically bound to comply with EULAs and copyright laws, then you need to not use cooked ROMs that your device isn't licensed for or that the EULA doesn't permit you to use.
If you feel that laws that aren't enforced, or are unenforceable, are non-effective or lapsed, then you should do as your conscience directs you to do and be sure to stand up for yourself in court if lleh freezes over and M$ decides to enforce (and please do blog about it, I'll paypal you $5 bucks for your defence fund).
If you're a red-blooded rum-sodden pirate, you should say "Aaargh!" and do what you're going to do because you'd do it anyway.
Just please respect XDA Dev's policies whatever you choose to do and don't mess up a good thing.
BTW:
There is a policy listed in the site Rules or FAQ, so just read that and if you don't like it, don't leave angry, but please leave.
If you don't understand legal aspects and want to ask about it, PM the mods or admins and ask respectfully.
You can even PM me, but I cannot speak for XDA, I can only explain some legal basics and even then, my knowledge is based more in constitutional and criminal law.
I do think that threads like these call attention to the topic and it's best not to stir the pot, or rock the boat (pick your own metaphor of choice) and call the wrong kind of attention to the issues.
I'd like to see this thread closed down.

WMWiFiRouter Questions

I just installed WMWiFiRouter (http://www.wmwifirouter.com/) trail version and liked pretty much. Would like to buy a license if someone can clarify my questions:
1- Is WMWiFiRouter Legal according to the service providers? I'm with ATT
2- Is anyone who is already using could share their reviews
3- Will ATT objects for WMWiFiRouter usage? Obviously I will be using for web browsing and not for downloads.
Thanks Folks !!
1. Wifi router would be a violation of ATT tos
2. I use wifi router daily. I havent tried the newest release but i did try v1.10 and reverted back to an older version. Sure there are new options and tools in the new versions but its slow and buggy (may take 2 or 3 atempts for connection, connection drops, takes longer to connect). I would suggest that you try version 0.91 (which is a free version). It lacks the extra options like connection security and naming your connection, but you can go to the connection itself after it has been created and name it and encode it there. version 0.91 is fast, almost never drops out, and connect right away.....oh, and again i believe its free.
3. Dont tell um : )
(just make sure to stay within their data cap.
Thanks YL Groper.
I have unlimited data plan so I wont be exceeding the data limit. Where can I get the 0.91 version? Can you share please..

WMWifiRouter is not free and if you are using a beta before Chainfire, its author and a hero to the xda community, went commercial either because that was the version availabl!e when you first got it and stuck with it or you pirate it, you are doing so against the wishes of the author. Maybe not the law, but the author.
So either pay up, beg for his permission on irc, live without it or live in sin.
That aside, when Time Warner cut me off I spent three weeks bootlegging ... copies of Debian Linux like it was my job and AT&T didn't break my balls about the many gigs of bandwidth -- perhaps because they'd make more money by my having to buy another $45 battery shortly after.
Got this version
i've got this version, its work fine for me on my raphael. dk wich version it is.

That looks like the 21 day [edit: cracked] demo of 1.25 (current). However, even posting the demo violates Chainfire's website's EULA which includes "You may not sell, assign, license, disclose, or otherwise transfer or make available the Software or any copies of the Software in any form to any third parties, without the written permission of Morose Media."
Sorry to be anal but for those of you who also wish to be anal or courteous, to download the trial you should go here and check off that you accept the EULA and get the cab.
If you want more information about WMWifiRouter, check out Chainfire's thread. Note that he doesn't post the cab, just the link, possibly I'd bet to keep track of how many people are downloading it and from where for marketing purposes. That's what I'd do and that may be what Chainfire is contractually obligated to do his best to make sure it happens that way. When your product, even its demo, is running in the wild, that's valuable information you're not getting that you could use to leverage yourself a better offer.
And please people, nobody post the betas in this thread, another or anywhere on the Internet. Just give out the download link, http://global.wmwifirouter.com/trial/.
Doug
Personally I think its BS that he released free versions (.91) and now tells people they can't download or use them. What a greedy SOB. We all make, build, and use software that is freeware for the reason that we share it. If you want to sell your version, go for it. But don't get a god complex and demand everyone stop using everything you've created until they pay you. Especially if you released it as freeware.

ATT has a 5GB cap on their unlimited data plans. So yeah, you have to worry about that. Just be on a heads up. A friend of mine just got hit for it, ended up with a $3,000 bill.
You got to be F'ing kidding me.
Chainfire, like many others here, started developing a program that turned out to be brilliant and invaluably useful to so many people. So he gave it out for free both to hook everybody up with something fantastic /and/ to get feedback from people on how to make it better.
But a program that turns your cell phone into, essentially, a Linksys router plugged into a cable modem is extraordinarily complex. He didn't invent the paperclip, patent it, kick back and let the royalties come in, he made something that required and still requires thousands of hours of development, something for which there is a huge market not just for our phones but Nokias and Blackberries.
So it hits the streets here first, people love it, they want more, they want more features, they want encryption, they want different ports, they want more thousands of hours out of him; suddenly it turns into a full time operation for Chainfire. Full time from the beginning as a hobby and now as a possible small career.
And then he apparently gets an offer from some kind of technologically-related venture capital outfit basically offering him a job under, of course, a lot of conditions. They market the program as aggressively as they can, sell it and give him a small cut. He takes the deal. The man did not have an infinite source of income before this (nor does he now) and this is a very rare, the only one of which I am aware, that something born on XDA is so good that it gets commercial attention.
We should all be proud of him and WMWifiRouter stands as an example of what you might be able to accomplish here if you work hard enough.
And you're going to break balls and call it bull**** that in order to use what he started for more than a trial period to figure out that it's worth far more you have to pay $30 just because it started in betas without EULAs? What kind of asshole are you?

As much as I would like to agree with you, I can't. Many successful companies have done the same. Hell, Microsoft is doing that right now. Anyone can go download Windows 7 and get a key. Then suddenly, everyone's Windows 7 installs will be telling the users they need to buy a key! Sounds familiar, except Chainfire is just asking people to buy a license for the upgraded program. He wants a return on his investment.
He's done so much for this community, you can't cast him out and piss on his name. He's putting actual time and money into his new project and improving it. Unless he tries forcing the people using the free version into upgrading, I really don't see a problem with it.
My my, what a heated discussion!
First, to answer the original poster's questions:
1 & 3:
It is the same for all providers: you need a data plan that allows tethering. If you don't, you would be violating their terms of service. Which in turn means they could charge you extra or just terminate your phone service. If you use WMWifiRouter regularly you should by all means get a data plan that allows tethering, just to be sure. (you wont get thrown in jail, though )
2:
I obviously cannot answer that
---
As to some of the 'points' made here by others. You guys are clueless. I wrote a long response to explain exactly what/how, but you know what, even if I posted that, you still wouldn't understand (or try to). So I'm just going to keep it short instead.
No, you are not allowed to distribute any version of WMWifiRouter. That you didn't have to pay for the old versions is completely irrelevant to that. You were never allowed to distribute them, and with good reason. Never have I said people who were using 0.91 or older had to upgrade, or that they had to stop using it - so stop pretending I did. And if you know this and still continue to do that, it's nothing but disrespectful to the people who make the stuff you use.
You have no idea how much time goes into the development, testing and support of something like this (I spend > 60 hours a week on it and still release a lot of other things here on XDA, and I'm not the only person working on it). It was just not possible to go on with developing it without charging for it - and the current WMWifiRouter is much better because of it. Not to mention the legal stuff that went on around the time of 0.91 that cost me a bunch of money out of my own pocket - and as people hardly ever donate ....
It is not and has never been a matter of greed, it's always been a matter of finding a way to get it done. If you're big enough to complain about it, you should be big enough to simply refrain from using it altogether... Just because you are a freeloader doesn't mean I'm the bad guy here.
And btw, if you've never tried version 1.20 or up, you never really tried WMWifiRouter ...

Rob
I never once said you couldn't sell your software, upgrade your software, or spend time adding features. I said you were greedy for demanding all previous freeware versions removed from all sites and calling anyone who uses a freeware version a thief. 0.91 was released as freeware and as such you should have no problem with anyone sharing it or using it. You're making it sound like using 0.91 is against the law and anyone doing so must pay to use 1.25.
For the record I invest thousands of hours in coding and software as well and make plenty of money doing so. I just believe that when you release shareware or freeware, that you should understand one day you may wish to market your software and older, less featured software may still be available because YOU decided to release it early.
This is a classic case of greed. If someone wants a full featured fully working platform, make them pay for it. But if they decide they can live with your freeware, first trial public versions, then why be an ass about it? And yes, I've read about you going around demanding sites remove your previous versions, and making mods lock topics or remove links to your previous versions.
Don't you read? You were never allowed to distribute it. It said so both in the thread and the download page on the site, when the old downloads were available. Makes your complete response completely irrelevant. And again, using 0.91 is not against the law, spreading it is. Just because you didn't have to pay for it, doesn't mean you can do everything you want with it. If I had charged $0.01 for it from the start, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.
As for why I'm being an 'ass' about it, is because people don't want to play by the rules I set for the software I made. That doesn't make me an ass, that makes them an ass. Perhaps if the people who know what/where/how with the old versions just kept using them silently, and stopped trying to post it everywhere all over again and get 'noobs' to use it, often on devices that aren't compatible and when they screw up turn to me for support and to fix things, perhaps then I wouldn't need to make a fuss about it, because it doesn't cost me to have them around?
Anyways, I'm done discussing this. Believe what you will, the world is full with people like you why cry when other people stop giving things away. That's greed on your part.

I am a regular user of WMWifiROuter for more than half a year now. I ofcourse purchased the software after it stopped being free. I am not going to get into the debate about the selling of the software and will limit my comments to my technical knowledge of the product.
Well, its a lifesaver for me and the two other co-workers of mine who all use my HSDPA connection to surf.
Now, that said, it is unfortunately not a 100% stable piece of software. The version that I use is 1.11, which is the last version before the total re-write. The current version (1.25) is bloated in comparison and even less stable than the "classic" versions.
So, with 1.11 I can keep a connection going for half an hour or so, then all sessions get cut, and the connection goes down. Keep hitting reload in Firefox and eventually the pages will load again, or maybe not, then the best thing to do is to stop WMWifiRouter and start it again. This is ofcourse not very cool for SSH session and other interactive tasks. For the web in general its a tolerable hassle.
Compare this to plain old Internet Sharing via the native WM 6.1 tool (via USB), which is rather stable and just runs fine more or less.
So, yes, I use the software every day, and without it I'd really be in a bind, but its fair to say its not a finished solution and unfortunately the re-write didn't help any. This is important to keep in mind if you need to do interactive work on-line.
Here's hoping they get it to run better on the Raphael. [Interestingly, on my Kaiser it ran much much more stable, but back then it was all the 1.X versions, so I can't comment how 1.2X works with a Kaiser. But who cares? On the Kaiser it works great. On the Raph, it is as I have said.]

Moderators on this forum are not MADE to do anything, threads and links are removed/locked for the good of the forum, end of story. If you believe us moderators are in someway controlled by burocracy feel free to contact the admin and air your views.
AND a word of caution to anyone else deciding to post WAREZ, we made an example in this thread already, ANYONE found posting WAREZ will be banned from the forum for a considerable term.

Protecting Against UK Digital Economy Act 2010

Disclaimer: everything discussed here is for educational purpose only etc...
OK, so from June 12 this Hell act will take effect in UK, and downloading Torrents etc will become difficult, as ISPs to disclose details of customers who repeatedly infringe copyright, with a possible fine of £250,000 for non-compliance and requirement that ISPs block access to sites that allow "substantial" infringement as well as disconnecting users from Internet etc...
more info @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Economy_Act_2010
so, we all know we download Music and TV series etc...
how are we gonna protect our self from this ACT ?
Encryption is one idea, but encryption have to be done on both sides of the connection so this could be tricky....
any thought on the issue ?
Such ideas are preposterous, as they simply bypass Global Internet Neutrality.
IP-Spoofs and Proxies will always HELP protect the user, but the easiest way to prevent "being caught" if you're doing something you legally should not be, is to create a Private Domain amongst either a Router itself, or a Protected Virtual Machine.
Preferably a Virtual Machine due to the odd ports they access for Internet Access, plus, if "Big Brother" were to kick down your door... Most Protected Virtual Machines (Example:: Virtual Machine Encrypted with Bit-locker Technology) can take several months or years to "break into" for data... unless of course, you have the Key RIGHT THERE in hands reach.

I'm not sure but aren't law enforcements have some sort of agreement with MS to have backdoor in to windows and BitLocker or something ? (maybe just a roomer i heard somewhere)
with IP-spoofing and Proxies, would that still not be traceable ? and also sow down connection badly ?
i mean when i in Russia i don't use any sort of proxies or anything just download things if Rapidshare and Pirate Bay as it is and i get good 1 or 2MB/s most of the time,
but in UK even now the Uni giving me the headache with their firewalls and WebSence...
i have to RDP all my downloads back in Russia and then send them as files to myself on like Microsoft Skydrive and other online hostings that Uni dosent block (Rapidshare and Depositfiles, iFolder are all blocked)
next year mm no longer living on campus and will have my own network contract with ISP and this D.E.2010ACT
worry me... I'm mean i on average download 30 - 40GB a week, that just on torrents...
one idea is to there a way to encrypt and tunnel all the Traffic form UK PC to Russia and back so ISP see nothing at all just flow of Encrypted data ? and how this can be achieved ?
and also what are the Chances of PirateBay and Utorrent incorporating some sort of Privacy features to it ? like utorrent have encryption but initial connection is still open
Well, honestly, due to Privacy Laws, unless a Windows User is a KNOWN convict, thief, or pedofile, allowing Law Enforcement backdoor access to ALL Windows Users is, again, violating Net Neutrality AND ones Privacy. Anyone and EVERYONE can be "violated" via malware.. and have their PC/Laptop turned into a Server for hosting & sharing illegal content, so there are SEVERAL conflicting issues with this.. atleast in the US. [As the user is not at fault. Their security software would be.] The same reason that most Professionals against the Digital Economy Act worry about Open Access Points.
And for Encrypting & Tunneling traffic, torrent sites, as well as other file sharing sites, would have to incorporate Server-Side Security. Massive 128 bit or even 256 bit encryption. Also, the user, us, would have to mirror the security methods these sites are using. So it would cause a "Worm Hole" through Internet Traffic Space.. thus making it look like the downloaded files came from no-where, and went no-where.
Such security and encryption methods could require several man-hours to "Up-Hold" as well as Maintain. So such an act could cause either Global Domain Dominance or the death of sites we all enjoy today.
AgentZach, I think you might want to brush up on your english skills. In no way is "Server" meant to be capitalized, among other clear mistakes that make you impossible to understand. But I digress. Most of the law isn't all that bad, however, I'm troubled by this, "the requirement that ISPs block access to sites that allow "substantial" infringement[4]." That could be a real issue. As for backdoor access, I'm pretty damn sure that violates multiple laws, plus how the hell would microsoft know what only you know?

How exactly does accessing someones files violate net neutrality law? It doesn't even currently exist, thanks to our beloved Bush administration, net neutrality is treating all traffic equally. Plus, even being a known criminal does not give law enforcement the right to search your personal things without a warrant of some fashion.
TLDR:
Don't use torrents without a vpn. ..Or the internet.

The important thing is: Users, who intend to break the law on the internet, must lose their solo dependency for Security Suite software, and start learning how encryption and Virtual Private Networks work, as a whole. It's not only their ass they'll be saving. They'll be saving all of the rest of a torrents "seeders" who haven't stepped-up their games yet...

I've always wondered one thing. I don't know much exactly how they work - I just know I need protection.
People who download and don't seed.... do they even have a chance at getting caught? I honestly wouldn't figure they would. Maybe for like.... 20 min they have a chance then what? Do they just disappear? I use a site where you actually have to keep an upload/download ratio just for the reason I hate leeches.
Also, stay away from public torrent sites is probably a good idea. THOSE are the ones they get all your info from.

For "Basic" security and encryption, without much manual handling, I'd recommend using either Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 or Norton Internet Security 2010 (or 360 v4).

Well, getting caught, without seeding, varies upon the host/torrent site. Private Sites like Demonoid save logs for User Ratio data... and that Ratio data includes your IP Address you use when downloading & uploading torrents. Now if you were to use a Proxy, you may get a tad bit slower connection speed, but your TRUE IP Address would be "spoofed" to the Proxy IP. In other words, the host of the Proxy would be investigated, not you.

Good idea, and true. Most public trackers display all seeding & leeching data to anyone interested.. but the same goes as I've said above. Proxies may cut your speeds, but does speed really have more importance than your personal safety & privacy?
I'll leave that for you all to decide.
To be a smartass ain't why I signed up, and sorry if it seemed that way. Since you want to be a douche I'll speak your language - at least my TLDR made some sense, unlike his entire post.
But while we're on the topic of stupidity;
"Global Internet Neutrality
IP-Spoofs
Private Domain amongst either a Router itself, or a Protected Virtual Machine.
Preferably a Virtual Machine due to the odd ports they access for Internet Access
Virtual Machine Encrypted with Bit-locker Technology"
Just what is this "Global internet neutrality"? We're having a hard enough time trying to hold on to such in our OWN country, and other countries have none, so- doesn't exist.
"IP spoofs"- ANY idea how the internet actually works? Not possible to just arbitrarily IP spoof, you need special conditions.
"Private Domain"? Hurf durf, what? How's it work, what IS it?
"a virtual machine due to the odd ports they use for internet access"? WHAT are you takling about, have you ever actually USED a VM? Going by that comment I doubt it. I give up.
I can tell I'm talking to an avid 4chan lover. Good luck finding anyone who can understand what he's saying, I personally left my decoder ring at home.
Stop trying so hard, get enough sleep and have some caffeine, it'll do you good and you just may come across as halfway coherent next time. And maybe try to stop using large words on the net, because you're doing it totally out of context (which makes you look stupider than i'd like to believe you are)
The English syntax really wasn't the issue here, just that it was way off base and incomprehensible. Don't talk about something unless you have at least a BASIC idea of how it works. The RIAA and MPAA go after people who seed mainly. Private torrent sites are overrated and just not worth it- keeping a ratio mostly requires a seedbox so you don't get banned.
And the culmination of my wall of text, anyone who puts "Number of bricks to date:0" in their sig really shouldn't go attacking others. True men actually try to brick their **** and don't brag when they haven't.

So Megaupload has been shut down, and now Filesonic and Fileserve have decided to not allow anybody to download files they did not personally upload.
How long before similar hosting sites follow suit?
A lot of legitimate websites depend on those places to host files for their users to download, even this one. This frustrates the hell out of me because now all over the internet links to legitimate legal files are shut down because of the assholes that feel the need to use these websites for unlawful purposes.
I tried to download a ROM earlier to find it was hosted on filesonic. Tried to download a zip file of something that was hosted in megaupload. I know a ton of files from useful threads on this community are hosted on these 3 sites or sites like them, and its going to be even harder for users that want to play with an older device that has been forgotten but the files and information was still there. Now they will find the information but won't have access to the files they need.

I did read the news. That is why Megaupload alone did not affect me so much, but Piracy also played a major role, and because of such OTHER file hosts are shutting down services and making files unavailable.
Or are all File Hosting sites laundering money and have something to run from?

it's the money making scheme thing they are removing from their sites
a lot of them were doing that to attract people
were you download a file, and the guy hosting the file was getting paid per MB by the filehosting service
i'm actually glad all those are shutting down, that was a horrible thing to see here in XDA
always making members building huge list of ROMs or whatever Mods, on those sites and bumping up the size of the actual download, so they get more money out of the each download
we had a lot of users complaining about that
that money has to come from some where, and Advertising alone doesn't generate that much money to make it viable by the filehosting site

So, one file host gets shut down due to a completely unrelated incident, other companies lighten their vulnerabilities to play it safe, and now you can't download roms for dead devices? Damn the guy downloading a poor quality cam rip of paranormal activity 3! Don't blame the legislature, or any other legislatures or any other aspect of the government, don't blame Lamar Smith, don't blame the file host sites who want to play it safe, let's blame it on the guy who didn't hurt anyone as he wasn't going to buy the movie anyway. Torrenting is just sharing made easier, we traded tapes back in elementary school that we'd recorded off of the radio. This is the same thing on a larger scale and it scares people.

a lot of them were doing that to attract people
were you download a file, and the guy hosting the file was getting paid per MB by the filehosting service
i'm actually glad all those are shutting down, that was a horrible thing to see here in XDA
always making members building huge list of ROMs or whatever Mods, on those sites and bumping up the size of the actual download, so they get more money out of the each download
we had a lot of users complaining about that
that money has to come from some where, and Advertising alone doesn't generate that much money to make it viable by the filehosting site

That part I was not aware of, as I have never used an account to host files there. I didn't know people hosting the files got paid per MB and tbh that makes sense why pirates would use them. Thank you for explaining that point.
My anger is directed at they fact that now a LOT of important links in this site and many others are now broken. And the fact that pirates have made these places havens to host their wares is a primary reason these places are now running scared.
And I know it happens. A while back I got interested in Hombrew development for the Wii as I had a unique idea for how to use the remote. So I set out to hack my Wii to allow it to run Homebrew apps. There is a legal way and a non legal way. The legal way would allow you to run Homebrew but no retail games. The illegal way allows you to play pirated games. In my search for information I came across a website with thousands of links to illegal Wii games - all hosted on places just like that.
Now I know why - but the fact remains if people didn't do that - and the sites were used for legitimate purposes we wouldn't be here today.
And I KNOW there was more to the megaupload than that - but now all of them are shutting down and scaling back because of it. And who put tha excuse in their hands???

Is there a better translator you could use? I'm not trying to offend you, but I can't tell what you're saying. To be perfectly honest, it sounds like random anti-American phrases and statements tossed in a blender.
He's asking why an American authority is the one to close down MU.

Piracy is a issue but its being used as a scapegoat so the industry could have more control & insure future profits. With technolgy becoming more advanced & cheaper artists/fans dont have to depend on the majors.

http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/01/20/megauploads-takedown-how-is-swizz-beatz-involved/
]So, one file host gets shut down due to a completely unrelated incident, other companies lighten their vulnerabilities to play it safe, and now you can't download roms for dead devices?
I used that as an example. Actually the ROM I couldn't download was for my SGSII Thank You.
Damn the guy downloading a poor quality cam rip of paranormal activity 3! Don't blame the legislature, or any other legislatures or any other aspect of the government, don't blame Lamar Smith, don't blame the file host sites who want to play it safe,
Why WOULD I blame the government for blocking illegal activity? Its no secret that ripping and uploading a movie for people to download for free is a crime. So the government is enforcing the law. So how is the government to blame for these people uploading illegal files to these places? I don't care how or why its a law its still a law and up to the government to enforce. Weather I agree with it or you agree with doesn't matter. Its still a law and THIS istuation had nothing to do with SOPA or Lamar Smith.
let's blame it on the guy who didn't hurt anyone as he wasn't going to buy the movie anyway. Torrenting is just sharing made easier, we traded tapes back in elementary school that we'd recorded off of the radio. This is the same thing on a larger scale and it scares people.
If you want to torrent - then torrent. I don't care. I don't care if people DO pirate movies, music or anything else. But torrenting is a relationship between the people sharing those files and the people getting those files. If you and the person your getting those files from get caught and go to prison its of no consequence to me. But in this instance millions of people are affected because they no longer have access to legitimate files.
Weather Piracy is the reason MU was shut down or not DOES NOT MATTER. The fact remains that people WHERE using the places as pirating havens and HANDED the government the excuse to say piracy IS the issue and has the rest running scared/
If pirates were not using these places to host millions of dollars in illegal files then the headline would be different.

I did read the news. That is why Megaupload alone did not affect me so much, but Piracy also played a major role, and because of such OTHER file hosts are shutting down services and making files unavailable.
Or are all File Hosting sites laundering money and have something to run from?

Maybe developers in gen should start a co-op dev site?
IE a host owned and operated by and for developers, it could be a not for profit which for those who don't no means your goal is basically A. Be in black B. profits go to future of buissness or owners ie. people that pay for hosting. C. Try to help more in their communities and with customers than competion.
Basically through makeing yourself a not for profit your just helping everybody especially since I am pretty sure most devs dont make anything off donations.

That is an excellent idea. A place that only hosts files for developers and users of smart phones and tablets and nothing else.
+1

this is by far the best answer
anyone with the $ to host and maintain a free not for profit file services is welcome to do so
then the Admins/Mods of the site can easily ban anyone not following those principals
however!
there's still a gotcha!
apparently Teamwhiskey got shutdown by the gov under the same pretext as pirating even though all they did was ROM, or maybe that was just their SOPA protest that lasted longer than expected
yup, just checked their site it's back up
while on the same topic
yes ROM can technically be categorized as Pirated good as well, except for pure AOSP and CM releases
all other ROMs specially Windows, or TouchWiz or Sense based ROMs are all subjected as Pirated Warez if the crap does hit the fan

Who wants to be in podcast/video show?

Attention Mods/XDA staff. We have permission from svetius to post this here. I wasn't sure about doing this either, so I made sure to ask first. We will not directly link to our site so that we do not leech traffic from XDA. We aren't trying to compete with XDA either. We are looking for interns/unpaid staff interested in tech and mobile news, so the job board doesn't fit us.
Alright guys, here's the deal. I'm looking for video/podcast personalities for a website I'm involved in. The site is Install or Not dot com. I'm not linking to it directly so we don't get in trouble with XDA by leeching their traffic.
If you are interested in becoming a personality and can commit to several hours a week in recording audio and/or video, please post a reply here, and we'll talk about it.
There are three unpaid positions available at the moment. We're looking for video personalities, podcast personalities, and media editors. Requirements for the positions are listed below. You may be able to do more than one thing if you want to and are good enough.
All positions must adhere to the following rules:
- You MUST be able to commit at least five hours per week to recording and researching the shows.
- Media editors may need to commit ten or so hours, depending on skill if they are doing shows as well. You need to be available during the week and on weekends.
- You must be able to work within the site guidelines that we set.
- You must be able to be fair and unbias in your discussions. I don't care if you hate Windows Phone, iOS, or Android. You have to be a fair reporter.
To apply for a spot, please prepare a sample of your ability for me to preview.
Podcast sample should feature you talking about two different articles of your choosing for a minimum of ten minutes. Podcasts are meant for spinning out the news and discussing it with others. Try to put your own spin on the news. Make it entertaining. It doesn't need to be funny, it just needs to hold my attention. Feel free to work on submissions as a team if you know other people who want to be involved.
Video samples should follow the same guidelines as the podcast. I'd prefer to see a ten minute video of you talking about a few articles or topics that interest you. Videos are more generally targeted than podcasts. Again, this needs to be interesting and entertaining. it does not need to be funny, it just needs to hold the viewer's attention. Videos are solo pieces.
Editors should either team up with others who are submitting clips, or make a work on their own from the podcast and video guidelines. If you have prior experience in editing, you may submit any prior work as well, so long as it is appropriate. (no porn )
FYI: The positions are unpaid internships.
Site guidelines are set by myself and the owner. They may change from time to time, but you will always know in advance. Generally, just use common sense. It's not MTV or Cinemax; it's a tech news blog.
We don't want excessive profanity in any media on the site. A few bad words throughout the media is fine, but nothing excessive, and nothing horrible. If you can't say it on cable TV, you can't say it on our site either.
Be open to new ideas and other operating systems or OEMs. I don't care how much iOS pisses you off, or how bad Samsung screwed you over on a phone. You will report on the news in a fair and balanced manner. This includes reporting on iOS, Apple, Motorola, RIM, webOS, Symbian, and anything else you can think of that might make you cringe. If you can't wrap your head around being fair to everyone, do not apply.
I too being involved in the site can say, this may look like not such an appealing postition for now, as it's unpaid - but we will surely value your contribution, which can in future but you on our regular team.
Some of the incentives of doing the job are:
Attend tech events
Gadgets to review
Meet big shots of the tech arena
Make a name and get fame for yourself
Adds value to your CV, which employer would not like a person who is popular on the internet ? This might become your full time job, who knows ?
A business card with a fancy position
An identity which can never be erased, yes that's the beauty of the internet - you might be gone and forgotten in the world, but on the internet your name and work will always stay !
And some other perks too, which I'd rather not mention on a public domain.
Besides, I would also like to tell you, you don't need to be a pro at anything to do this job, just be enthusiastic, dedicated and responsible - though you should know tech and shall be able to speak english !
Age, Nationality, Location, Occupation or Gener all of those do not matter as far as you can do the job !
So hit us up if you think you are in for it !
PS: If you think, audio or video is a bit too steep you can even write for us
Bump to the top.
Okay guys. I would like to participate in it. As you previously said that we can even write articles for you, I might be interested
