I have been using GPS on my Tilt for a long time with no issues with different GPS software and everything went fine.
Recently I was driving with GPS running (using iGO) and the batteries gone out so that the device would not turn on until I charged it.
Since then every time any program accesses GPS module the Tilt completely reboots.
I tried reinstalling iGO, installing other GPS applications, taking out batteries for a long period of time. Nothing works.
I haven't tried a hard reset though but I don't want to loose my data.
Anyone experienced similar problems?
Any thoughts of a possible solution?
Thanks!
Did a hard reset. Didn't help.
Seems to be a really bad issue of the device.
Extremely disappointing situation...
Could somebody help with any idea?
this is really basic, but did u fully charge it? it would only restart as you mentioned if the battery is low 0-20%
Yep.
I completely charged it.
It is currently not a problem of batteries low when it restarts.
What happens (as I understand) when any program initializes the GPS (connects to COM port assigned to internal GPS module) the device reboots.
It looks like a hardware bug since even a hard reset didn't help.
I thought it might have been some static electricity left on the GPS module when device turned off because of the batteries but apparently not since I have taken the batteries for some time and it didn't help.
The problem is I don't even know who I can contact to - I bought it from AT&T but they seem not to have a technical support group for the device and seems that HTC does nto support Tilt either :-(
Tought I would share my experience.
I contacted HTC support with this issue and they replied that the device should be returned to repair service.
From the message it seemed to me that they were well aware of the issue but seems not many customers experience it they don't give a sh.. to fixing it and just repair (replace) the device.
I wish it were written in some FAQ etc and I knew about it before the situation and moreover before I bought the device.
I don't understand HTC, if they know about the issue and not going to fix it why they just not report it and tell everybody to prevent such situations...
Very disappointed...

Is anyone having an idea on how to handle the following:
- Start menu is opening and closing by itself, and
- after a while the device stops to respond to any input on the touchscreen, while other functionalities seem to be OK;
- neither a soft nor a hard reset help. The screen remains 'frozen' until... again difficult to say why, it recovers and then ...all over again as above.
thanks,
Nic
I had the same problem after about 2 weeks of use. Turn off, soft-reset, hard-reset didn't help at all. Leaving the phone off for couple hours helped but the problem occurred again. Very frustrating. I have contacted the HTC support but still haven't received any responses from them. I think it's the hardware problem.
This is either a motherboard problem- it has occurred on some Trinity and Hermes devices and involves the screen controller chip; or it could be a problem with a screen protector (if fitted ) causing pressure around the edge of the screen
I had the same problem. Sent my device to HTC and they replaced the motherboard. When I got it back, I thought all is well. The drop down menu started again so I sent back to them with a nasty message. It is in repair now and hopefully they will fix it again, change the motherboard and the screen!!!
Hello Gilbert,
When you send to them, you had to pay the shipping fee?

Hi,
Oh yes. twice already and this pisses me off. When they sent the device to me the first time after claiming it was fixed, i did not have to pay for shipping costs. Let's hope they fix the bloody device soon or I am going to change brands.
Thanks,
Gilbert
I saw that problem on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYfohqde2E8
Man I really hope mine doesn't have that problem, I wonder what it is? Let us know what happens when you get it back, again.
Dam, wtf, while reading this thread my Trinity started to act exactly as described in the above posts!!! IT'S contagous! Seriously... I do have a screen protector... Hope it rights itself....
This is really terrible...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=KYfohqde2E8
Hi there,
After having used my Trinity for 4 weeks I am experiencing same problems of erratic behavior, the start menu is activating itself and as a consequence device is slowing down gradualy up to the point where it freezes. I tried, soft/hard resets, removing battery etc. but nothing seemed to work. I have not installed the screen protector yet, so I can rule out straight away the effect of the screen protector. First I thought it could be jog dia lwheel which might be faulty, then it crosses my mind that it could be some virus. I donwloaded some applications off the internet. Before I found this thread I was considering of deleting the ROM and replacing it with another one, but it seem that the issue is more of hardware origin rather than software related. What happend after you got it from the repair? Is it working now? Cheers.
I have now done several test and have found what I believe is a serious bug in the ROM, making the Kaiser virtually useless for business users.
When the device is protected by a password (Start/Settings/Lock), the start menu freezes after ending phone calls. In addition, the backlight turns off.
This only happens if the phone call is long enough (more than a few secs) for the display to turn off during the call. This is to prevent accidental button presses. When the phone call is ended the display should come back up, however, this is where bug seems to manifest itself. Somehow the password protection gets in the way and turns the display off and freezes the start menu.
The reason why this is serious (especially for business users) is that when you use MS exchange sync, many businesses enforce policies requiring a device password (common & recommended practice). This means that the option of turning the device password off does not exist. Therefore, using exchange sync (with security policies enforced) and making phone calls does not work.
I have now made several hard resets and used two different SIM cards. However, I was not able to try this on adifferent device. Therefore, I would be grateful if somebody could try if they experience the same issue. Disabling the device password fixes this, so you won't be stuck if you try.
I will return my device tomorrow for a full refund, unless the store can show that this problem is specific to my device and that a replacement unit works properly.
Many thanks for any help!
Cheers
Magxs
what rom are you using? I have not seen this problem at all on the various AT&T ROMs.
I am using the official & released HTC TyTN II ROM on a device branded as such. Got the device on Tuesday as official retail unit, so it is not pre-production or beta.
Interesting to hear it works on the ATT ROM. HTC must have messed it up. Maybe it is just my device.
Thanks for the info.
Ok, there is a workaround now that I can live with for the moment. All you have to do is to toggle the power off and on when it hangs and it is all back to normal. Not too bad.
Hope they fix it though...
Same error for me!
Hi Magxs
I cannot tell you how pleased I was to find that someone else has experiencing the same problem! I have _exactly_ the same issue. Like, you, I use the phone for business use so there is absolutely no way I can use it without a device pin (well done on discovering that by the way). As you mention in your last post, switching it on & off fixes the issue but it's a bit of a pain.
HTC have got a good reputation on getting fixes out quickly so let's hope that'll be the case here.
Ben
Always good to know you are not alone with a problem. I also have a thread about this over at MoDaCo: http://www.modaco.com/Bug-Device-password-fre-t258974.html
The issue is getting some attention now. Just hope it is enough for them to do something about it.
Hi
I have built a small application that will hopefully resolve this problem, it is over on the thread at: http://www.modaco.com/Bug-Device-password-fre-t258974.html
The problem with the Kaiser seems to be because on a call when it has a password set it's entering an "idle" mode rather than just turning off the backlight. Idle mode is something normally not used on PocketPCs. Once in idle mode it responds to key presses etc but doesn't leave "idle mode" so it appears frozen or in an odd state as nothing lights up!
Regards
Phil
I experienced even more issues!
Please can you share with me if you have found more complete solutions?
I experience "freezing" after long calls, same as you.
But also when replying to SMSs
Even when the device is not used for some minutes: first backlight goes off or almost off, then the start button (software and hardware buttons) become not responsive:solution? Soft reset! or wait 25 secs
Please help
Saulo866
Problem is widespread
I too have this exact same problem. If the phone screen goes off during the call, the end button will lock the screen. Have you noticed that pressing and holding the end button puts a screen lock on the device?. Never seen this in any other device. Normally holding the end button cancels the Data (HSDPA, GPRS etc) connection. I will try the solution and see how I go.
This is just one of a number of problems. I also find the phone goes in "Roaming" mode even when connected to my own provider, and there are annoying problems with calendar synching. Gr8 device...but!
KaiserCallEndFix.exe needed
I cannot log in to Modaco. Even after registration, no validation email sent to me. Can any friend here post the fix for TyTN II ( KaiserCallEndFix.exe) here, so I can download it!
Thank!
This has gone rather quiet, I'm using the Reg edit listed earlier that forces screen to stay on during call but it's not ideal.
Anyone else solved it besides the button press workaround or Phil's Exe file?
I also suffering a different side effect from this problem.
I choose to deactivate the lock function to avoid the on-off procedure after the end of everycall. But every 1-2 days my device stops working because it starts asking for the lock (even though the lock function is disabled!!!!!!).
If I soft reset the device the problem disappears. Does anybody also have this problem?
Is there any news on when HTC will definitely solve this issue?
this problem stilll exists. thought it was just me. Just got 2 phones from orange - complained tothem about this bug & they sent 1 replacement phone. even though I told them it was a software issue. new phone arrived and problem is still there . Orange have escalated the issue to their technical people. I await their response. I also spoke with HTC technical support in the UK who claimed not to be aware of this issue. One thing they did agree with was that if youhave a pin , when asked to input the numbers upon switching on the device , the screen goes half dimmed so you cant see properly what you are tapping in. no mention of a fix anytime soon though. lets hope HTC do sort this out an drelease a fix because I do really like this device.
great forum btw
My phone has had this issue since I got it back in Feb/Mar 08, i just hit the power button on/off and dealt with it. I'm suprised this thread is months only and HTC hasnt fixed it yet. Why are they so slow to fix issues?
omg, thanks god that i am not going crazy,
ive been using a mda vario 3 on t-mobile,
since dec 2008, got the same freezing problem...
hoping for a update to be released by htc etc, then got a replacement phone after 6months, and still same problem.
i just spoke to the technical dept and he doesnt know any problems with this,
thanks for the insight on how it occurs.
so now im gna have a serious complaint abt this, to t-mobile.
and get htc to sort it out.
heheh
Hi There,
I have an HTC version TYTN 2, which is a great piece of gear.
One issue, when i charge via USB port, say overnight when on a business trip, when i check in the morning the large clock from the HTC screen disappears, and the device seems to lock up.
A soft reset fixes it no problem, however wondering if anyone else is seeing this. I have the original HTC shipped ROM.
Thanks,
Derek
I am having the same issue I think. With the original HTC Rom, this would happen 2 out of 3 charges, since moving to the Dutty 6.1 ROM it seems to happen each time I charge overnight.
When I disconnect the phone from the charger in the morning, the blocks on the top bar (tasks, charge, volume) are corrupt - they display as a garbled full box. If I try to use the phone without reseting, the entire display will become a garbled mess, it seems like its not clearing the screen before it writes more information, so eventually it just becomes full.
A simple reset every morning fixes this, but I would love to know whats causing it
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? It doesn't seem like its an issue that effects many people, as searches of this site for all the keywords I can think of produce no other threads on this.
-Mat
I also have the same issue as stated above.
Just as an update, it looks like it was batti that was causing the problem. Once I removed that software, the constant freeze ups on charging stopped.
First off, I just want to say thanks for anyone who might be able to be of some assistance. I've tried searching google and the forums but haven't had any luck. If I've missed something, please feel free to hit me upside the head with the spoon.
I've recently been having problems with my Tilt regarding charging/battery issues. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2220715&postcount=37
Here's a quick rundown of my history...
- Can use Active Sync just fine
- When trying to charge, it says charging but won't charge
- No visible damage to the mini usb plug (at least to me)
- Had accident where the usb cable was pulled out from Tilt
Now...
I recently bought a charger that will just charge the battery separately from the phone until I can get it repaired. It's working fine so far except one issue. Whenever I try to power off the device (hold the power button till prompted to turn off), it'll power off then it'll power itself back on after 3 seconds. I did a hard reset to see if that would fix anything but it didn't. The only way to keep the phone off is to take out the battery. But once I put the battery back in, it'll power on by itself. The power button doesn't seem to be sticking or anything but I guess anything is possible. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it very much!!!
(I'm currently running the stock AT&T Rom without any programs installed. Also, I've never had any other Rom flashed on it.)

There is an option somewhere in power settings that enables/disables the Tilt from charging when connected to a PC. This may be the cause of the first issue.
However, the fact that it won't stay powered off...I have never heard of that before it sounds like a hardware issue. If your Tilt is still covered under warranty I would get it replaced.

Thanks for the reply! I tried adjusting that setting along with any other settings I could find regarding power but all without any luck.
I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue as well, but I guess what I'm really wondering is if any one can make a semi-educated guess as to whether this could be involved with my mini usb plug issue or if the motherboard is just screwed
I'd love to send it in for a replacement but of course my warranty expired 5 days before the problems started

I'm not a hardware guru with HTC, although I have alot of experience troubleshooting PCs and Servers. I would say that it is unlikely that the USB port is what is causing the device to keep turning on.
In any event, are you qualified or ready to try an replace either one yourself (usb port or motherboard)?
There are 3rd party services that will fix the device...but they aren't cheap...it can cost $1-200 bucks or maybe more.
Are you running the Stock ROM/Radio/SPL? Or did you flash anything new?
You may want to revert everything back to defaults and see if the problem persists.

I'm handy with computer hardware and everything but not really with small electronics. I was willing to send it to a repair shop to have the usb plug replaced in hopes of fixing my charging problems but now I'm not sure if it'll be worth it if there's a bigger/more expensive problem.

I'm currently and always have been on the Stock Rom. I bought the phone as a refurb so who knows if someone here had it before me and flashed a bunch of roms . But since I've had it I've kept it running the stock AT&T rom. I also did a hard reset after I noticed the problem but it help anything.

Hmm..yeah...refurb doesn't sit well with me.
At least the problem isn't a crippling one...since you can charge it with a stand-alone charger. As far as not staying off....that's kind of annoying, but I don't generally turn my Tilt completely off. You can always just put all the power saving stuff on to cut down on battery.
So, it seems like something you may have to live with, or pay for repairs. Hopefully someone can offer a better miracle cure than those suggestions...

I was a little weary of buying a refurb at first, but it was actually in great condition and worked just fine until when I accidentally kicked the cable out of it. But thanks for the suggestions. And you're right, it's still very usable, just a bit more of a hassle right now. Hopefully someone out there has something for me.
Exact same problem as dieneverknowing. I am going to try some new batteries and see what happens.

im having the same issue on my old tilt. i took it apart. and still no luck . no visible damage, gonna clean everything and put it back together.
was this problem ever solved. sorry for bumping an old thread. But this is my same issue.
Hey don't worry about bumping an old thread. I meant to do the same when I got my phone fixed.
Turns out it was the sync connector that had damage. I sent it to PPC Techs for this service and it made it like new. I never tried to take it apart, but I could only assume that at some point in time, one of the pins in the connector became separated from the motherboard.
thats what it looks like to me. i have it narrowed down to the board with the usb connector. but not sure yet. How much was that service. i would replace it my self if i can find that part at frys today.
Service was $80, and then you had to pay shipping both ways. I had looked into replacing it myself, but my small electronic skills aren't good enough for me to risk it on a pricy phone. I remember seeing the connector part somewhere online for $40 I believe, but I can't remember where though.
But PPC Techs had it repaired in less then 24 hrs after receiving it. And they did a great job. It feels more solid then when I had originally bought the phone.
My tilt recently has been acting rather strange, and I'm not sure if its the radio or not. The phone keeps on gaining and losing signal, and cannot figure out why. At first I thought it might be a software problem, but I updated the rom to the newest official release and that did not fix the problem. Does anyone have a suggestion? The problem isn't reception, I've never had this trouble until recently, has always worked fine in this area regardless of weather / other.
not sure if it's the same issue...
I had the problem few weeks back..
my tytn would be having no signal at times..
I nid to go to Comms Panel and off/on the Phone.
after few days, encountered no SIM Card detected error.
hard reset and changing ROMs, including stock ROM didn't help.
now it's being repaired..
hope to get it back soon.
its horrible that you mention that, my warranty literally ran out about 5 days ago . However, based on the fact that I've done just about everything I could on the software end, I think it might be hardware (even though I haven't really even put this phone through any trauma whatsoever). The radio part of the phone....does anyone know which specific part that is? I don't remember seeing an individual radio in the disassembly, so I assume that it is on one of the boards. Does anyone know which one specifically?
mine was subjected to a few drops on the floor hehe..
but it was ok...
it was only recently that I encountered those issues...
if U can try get hold of the tytn II assembly/dis-assembly pictures, U might be able to remove the antenna pcb/board...
I only cleaned the metal connectors at the antenna board area.. no joy..
