Txt Messaging using GPRS?! - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hey. With the original standard HTC ROM, if I go into settings/connections/SMS service it gives me the option to send SMS using GPRS. Does this mean I do NOT have to pay for a TXT messaging package from my carrier (AT&T)? I currently have unlimited internet usage on my account and do not want to buy an additional TXT msg package. Is this possible? Is it reliable for txt msgs? Does it affect battery life?
Thanks for any help!

i would also like to know the answer to this question. i would love to be able to send sms through gprs without paying anything. but i have the att rom and theres no settings for it. if i flash to htc rom will i be able to do this?

UP!
If you flash to the HTC ROM I believe you will be able to do it. Well, at least I can confirm that you will have the option in the settings to do it. I am using an OEM Kaiser direct from HTC, not a Tilt.
I am just wondering if anyone has confirmed that they can ditch the AT&T SMS Text messaging plan and send all messages through GPRS instead??
Anyone??

I just tried sending an SMS over GRPS via a T-Mobile PAYG sim, I got charged for it as normal

Sending SMS to an email address on 8125--is there a crack?

Does anyone know if there's a way to enable sending emails via the SMS app on the 8125 (without using 36245 as the email address)? If you try to send an SMS to an email (not a phone number), the app tells you it's not allowed. Several of us would like to be able to "chat" via sms with people on BlackBerries (for example) or 2-way pagers that aren't addressable as cell phones. Most other phones allow this, but Cingular has disabled it on the 8125. It certainly works on Cing treos. Doesnt work on 8125 with orig ROM or Summiter's excellent ROM upgrade.
Anyone know if this is a registry edit, or would it require a seperate program? Anyone able and willing to post a solution?
omg i just realized it's not letting me send sms to email addresses either >< I used to use send sms to emails all the time on my treo too >< ahhhh ~ any fixes please

You can always send MMS to email addresses with just text.
I'm curious in today's age why you need to send SMS to email addresses, probably same reason MSFT didn't include it. Can you elaborate more??
There is cross operability with all carriers for text messages so you can just put in the phone number of any mobile device and it'll work.
All Blackberries that are less than 3 years old support SMS over the phone # assigned.
I understand the issue for 2-way pagers but why can't you just send a quick email?
There's a need for SMS to 2-way pagers because sending an SMS is faster to create and send...since email requires a logon and data connection. SMS is the easier way to go if you want to "chat"
Send an SMS to 121
The first thing in the body of the message should be the e-mail address with the subject immediately after, in parentheses. Then a space, then your message. Example: to send an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject of 'billing question' and the body 'Please contact me via phone to discuss my recent bill' you would send the following to 121
[email protected](billing question) Please contact me via phone to discuss my recent bill
Voila!

I won't speak for the original poster, but I'll elaborate with my reason: I'm not an email/internet/IM junkie, and I don't need all that for work, so I don't have a data plan for my 8125 in order to use the real email capability. But, I do have the 100 SMS msg pack on my plan, and I occasionally need to send a quick email to someone when I'm away from the computer and only have my phone. I used this capability on my Nokia6800 all the time, and apparently the Nokia software took care of the special formatting, since all I had to do on it was type in (or select from Contacts) the email address, the subject, and the message. When I started searching today on this issue, I hoped there was a more elegant solution, but I'm perfectly happy with the instructions for a specially formatted SMS message (as long as I can remember them when I need to send an email). I just figured out that I can copy/paste an email address from Contacts, which I suppose will be better than trying to rember one and having to type it, so that's not too bad.
If I really needed to use email a lot from my phone, I guess I'd give in and pay for a data plan, but for now, this SMS trick works just fine.
Edit: almost forgot to say thanks to Hosehead for the tip. Much obliged.

Using Cingular this did not work...
Worked just fine through Cingular for me when I tried it this afternoon. The email I received looked just like the ones I used to send with my Nokia.
Has worked fine for me since I got my 8125. I recommend making sure you have a new "3G" sim, I know some of the older ones restricted SMS e-mail.
It works for me!
I sent the first test to my work e-mail. Apparently the SPAM filters didn't like it.
Second test to personal e-mail worked like a charm. This is nice to know.
well holy shi** i didn't even know you could do that. it had never even crossed my mind that SMS connected to e-mail
brilliant, johnson. brilliant!
I've sent email with mine through text before...
I was messing around with it when I setup my gmail account to forward me emails through text...
not working for me..
Hmm.. this is not working for me on Tmobile with an MDA.. Has anyone had any success with tmobile?

Orange Voicemail icon Gone!!!

Hi all,
After I did the ROM upgrade to the official HTC WM6, everything works fine, well apart from the GPS, which I never managed to get it working and the icon that I should get when I have a voicemail. Now I get a text message with this "[email protected]" characters? Any ideas.
Thanks in advance.
Alonso
I got the same problem..
the mobile however should still be able to recognize it as a voice mail message. You just get an extra messages in your SMS messages folder
A kludge that works for me:
create a contact with the mobile number of "[email protected]" (just save it to your contacts) with a name like "Voice mail Notification"
install wm6_threader (find on this forum) and it will create a thread per contact!!
works better than original.. why? cause you have history similar to
incoming calls
outgoing calls
missed calls
but for SMS.
In Canada at Rogers Wireless we get additional SMS messages for missed calls when our mobiles are off.
I called it "Operator Notifications"
I also use it for SMS sent from Microsoft, Google and Yahoo. One per website.
The attached cab fixed it for me a while ago.
Not sure whether you need to install the sdkcerts before or not, so I include them just in case.
Reboot after installing.
The voicemail fix is included within rabdo's 1.6 cab for Orange UK network setup. (Also includes the necessary certs).
If you are on Orange UK, I recommend that (I use it with every flash....)

help
You can probably expect the amount of help in responses to be in direct proportion to the amount of diagnostic information you provide.
What connection type do you have?
What data plan are you using?
What have you tested?
What connection settings are you using?
Help others to help you.
Ok. For the Instant Messages just download Palringo, its free and does every client. Picture messages, you are going to have to get your Tmobile settings for MMS as well as browser settings. Go to google.com and type in T Mobile Connection settings I'm sure you'll find something, Same thing for mms, Type in Tmobile MMS settings.

Thread Closed!
Geez,
Do you know what Rom you're running? As you have a Tilt if you are running an at&t Rom or some of the cooked Tilt Roms (like XDA Live) then there is the whole Hidden Cingular Proxy issue (google it).
Anyway, this really doesn't warrant another thread discussing getting tilt/kaiser to work on t-mobile. Please ask your questions in one of the existing threads discussing t-mobile issues.

SMS Data

I don't have a texting plan or a data plan, however i do have wifi. So i was wondering if anybody knew of a program for pocket pc that lets you send and receive texts through data, rather than sms. I know i don't have wifi everywhere, but it's better than nothing. Thanks
Nobody? Any way?

To my knowledge there isn't a program that does that, and there won't be.
You can setup an imer to send instant messages. The only way to send txt messages is through a texting plan with your cell provider.
with some providers, you can send an email to the recipient and it will go through as an sms. or you can use this

but, of course, it's an sms. Something the original poster was trying to avoid.
You paid about $400 for the phone, just fork up the $5 a month for a text plan. I pay $8 for unlimited txts.
Yea i tried the emailing method and it wasn't reliable at all. O well, thanks for the help. If anybody knows anything else, then please say it, thanks.
I don't pay for unlimited texts. I get them for free.
the e-mail thing is great, but they cant reply to them reliably.. and if they do, they do it as an SMS...
SMS's are great because just about all phones can do them.. beyond that you will need to be chatting with other friends with smartphones, and find software that lets you do it by a data connection (Doesn't Blackberry connect do that?)
u can email a phone number(u would send from your email, and i would recieve it as an sms) as long as u know that cell company's email address... ex. for at&t my cell's email is [email protected] then it comes in just like an SMS message. each carrier should have this option...

Is it possible to add mms support

I did a quick search on this but couldn't find it. Anyway is it possible to add mms to your phone? I currently have to goto the providers website and view to photos and most time that site doesn't work. So i was just wondering if there is a way of adding this. I don't know much about this stuff so no need to point and laugh if it isn't possible.
well, yes. depends on your carrier.
it is telus
I realy don't understand your question.
The diamond has MMS support.
Are you asking for the settings for your provider?
TDO
ok so then whenever someone sends me a text with a picture or a video i have to log onto the website to view those pictures or videos. My question is just like most flip phones that get them sent directly to their phone is it possible to do that aswell with a smart phone. I only had this phone and a blackberry and they are both the same in that i have to log into the telus website to view any texts sent to me with media attached to them. also i have to email people my photos instead of just texting them which i also hate.
it will get directly to your phone if the mms settings are correct setup with the
settings from your provider
I had the same problem (using T-Mobile UK), all I got was a text message with a URL to T-Mobile's site.
To fix it, just send an MMS to yourself! For some reason, you need to send an MMS before you can receive one (at least that was the case with T-Mobile).
Try it and see if this fixes your problem.
yea for me it was the same,
i called tmobile why its so scarry, they told me that they need to know if your device supports MMS and the best way is to see an mms coming from your device so they can be sure that u are working on an mms enabled device.
greets
