Screen flickering a 312mhz

HI, I tried to push my wizard to the max speed in battery status:
Everything load faster and it seems that surfing using the wifi is way faster now too... but after one hour my screen started behaving in a weird fashion: the letters on the screen are vibrating

the device is not crashing or anything the screen is just vibrating shortly after I open or close a "window"..... I throttled back to 299 but i can feel that its running at a lower frequency....

I mean, be for real! The Wizard runs stock at 195MHZ, the author basically warns you that monkeys might fly out of your ass if you overclock so you push it the max and complain that you're experiencing weird stuff?????

As an aside, I think the most common speed here is 260MHZ with BatteryStatus...
In the 60's we were told "speed kills" ... now I know why!

Yeah the overclocking wasn't stable and affected the framebuffer or other display related speed setting and thus caused your "vibrating letters" from the sounds of things. Just to remind you that overclocking can affect RAM timings too so it may have a negative (read: PERMANENT) effect on your RAM in there too.

It was just to try, and no my battery dont drain that faster, I lost ~7% in 1hour with bluetooth and wifi activated. I tried the 312 settings to see how fast wm6 was at the frequency since most of the device with the legit version will run at that speed. Simple curiosity since the setting was there. But still I'm wondering what in that Omap less overclockable that say a Xscale? I remember being able to get 100mhz out of my iPaq hx2210..... And I know that the regular setting is 260 for the Wizard but even at that speed on my particular device coolcamera is sluggish and videos on Coreplayer are like slideshows this is why I choose a higher setting...... But thanks for telling me what was affected by the overspeeding....

try upping it to 500mhz that always helps me.
and about the usb fan. you can try putting it in the freezer to get the temp down.

Well you see the light that comes on in the freezer? Well if you take the buld out and wire the 2 pins directly to a loudspeaker it becomes a bluetooth cellphone ringtone amplifier.

that was good... Acually I never asked for help just information about what was causing the problem other than the overlcocking......

we all know you can put phones in freezers. This forum isnt made for jokes or lies, some people are really trying to get help. What happened if someone really put it in the freezer?? Then what would be so funny?
Newbies: please don't do anything anyone has said here, phones that are overclocked obviously need to be held under running water. Make sure to press all the buttons so the water can get to the problem source.

I think that maybe a car battery might work, run the AC (putting the phone in front of a vent of course), direct wire the phone--you don't need to worry about a fuse--I don't think it will run much more than 3 or 4 seconds--it'll be fast for a little bit.

SAR, Radiation, that kind of thing

You're probably not going to like this thread.
SAR levels... phone radiation, that kind of thing.
This isn't something I worry about that much but I've noticed some things since upgrading my phone over the years. Also, I've been in some areas with lots of radio waves and then in areas where there are very few radio waves and I have to say
If you think you don't believe in radio as pollution try standing in the middle of the rainforest where there is no power, no phone signal and you'll feel a sense of peace than cannot be compared to in an isolation tank in a city.
When you do this contrast a number of times I come back to the city and there's this sense of buzzing. Bear in mind this is from the ocean to a high rise apartment. I'm 100% sure I'm not imagining it, though I always accept the placebo effect where I could be imagining it, I've seen it so many times now and so clearly I'm adamant the human body's electrical nervous system can be effected by a lot/strong magnetic fields.
Basically I've noticed in years gone by that newer phones seem to feel like they're emitting more power than they did before when idle, but emitting less power when in use.
The reason I think this is because it used to take 20mins on the phone before getting a headache with a Phillips Savvy but that now takes now that takes 35-1hr on a Android gen of device.
However, if I use a modern phone and it's right in the centre of my chest I swear I can feel it. I wonder if there's been any double-blind tests on this. The thing is, I have WiFi on browsing like this and also 3G is at 2 bars but this feeling continues a little in 3G and a very tiny amount in airplane mode. This makes me think there's a magnet in there even during airplane mode. So, is the magnetometer always engaged like it seems to feel? Can we turn that off when not in use to save battery or is that proximity sensor always on?
As I say, I only don't like using the phone with it near my heart, I don't sense any problem anywhere else. Then again, more electrical signals come from the heart to the brain then the other way round so it could be a sensitive area.
Regards bluetooth. I checked out bluetooth headsets because they say the sweep spectrum should reduce area heating and so a SAR rating wouldn't even be possible. But that wasn't what it felt like. I still get headaches with bluetooth headsets, it's just greatly reduced. I figured it's pointless if it's not really working.
After a lot of research I found tube headphones and I use these just for longer calls.
The next thing I'm thinking is to optimise how the phone uses radio and sensors. This should be automated. I'd like to know how to turn off wifi when a connection drops rather than doing it by location in tasker for example. The same sort of thing should be done with GSM & 3G switching so what isn't needed is turned off. All of this meshes nicely with battery life - the 2 are synonymous. Why not enable call forwarding, carry a 2nd phone for GSM and only go out of offline mode for when you need to do something?
However, if my intuition is correct (this is one of the reasons I'm posting this thread), then SAR is just one of 3 radio signals coming out of the phone excluding electricity itself (EMF source).
So,
- so you get headaches during long phone call in the vicinity of the phone?
- do you find it easier to think clearly when on a wired connection compared to WiFi?
- have you thought about this much?
WiFi has been found to effect sperm mobility for definite but other than than it's all pretty unproven. WiFi seems to be lower power but somehow worse than GSM. Not sure about 3G.
However, phones are getting more and more powerful. 3G uses more battery than GSM and WiFi is an additional signal. Then we got 4G WiMax and all the rest on the way. Plus as I mentioned the seemingly minor development of the magnetometer. Is there any limit?
I never used to care that much until I experienced an electrically quiet place and then had to return to the drudgery of the city.
I still feel it's a subtle thing, but the effect for me can actually be very clear now, something that wasn't so for me in the days of GSM only, back then I didn't believe in all this at all.
Another thing I find is that typing on a computer without WiFi is somehow easier to think in a linear way without getting thoughts interrupted. I know, I know, this is a bit much now.
There is less energy coming off of your cell phone's radio transmitter than there is coming off of your computer screen that you interpret as visible light.. but the difference is that light bounces off mostly and if it doesn't it's burning your skin.
So, there's a load of info for you. Also some fixes too. Hopefully these things aren't a problem for you but also I hope to find people to discuss it with.
One thing I never understood was when training in the Air Corp we were taught to keep distance from UHF radios 25 years ago but then in the 90's and 00's phone radiation was not taken seriously at all and we still get people joking about it like it's taboo.
All this is very inconvenient for a tech addict. Obviously I've gone out on a limb with this thread. Be kind

Well, if you're "scared" of high SAR values, i would recommend you to get the Note. It's extremely low at 0.16 W/kg, and it looks like it's the lowest of all cell phones today. I personally don't care about SAR, but i can't complain if it scores well.

Ah but one of the points I'm making is that the SAR is only for some of the function on the phone. I think it only covers 2G or 3G during a call. Afaik it's not covering WiFi, WiMax, sensors and also EMF which shielding is there to shield against you see. I guess what's needed is more info on SAR because while I know it's basic I wonder how basic it is. Holding a EMF meter next to a phone would be interesting too. In fact I have another android now so when I got this i9000 fixed I'll hold
Another point I am making is that according to the SAR values my i9000 should be better than my old Phillips Savvy but what I'm saying is that this is not what it feels like.
My guess for why this might be could be because a SAR rating only measures local tissue heating as if the amount of radiation is the only factor. What I'm saying is that it's not simply the peak power output that's important but also what is being transmitted.
I believe WiFi is lower power but it's closer to the frequency at which the human nervous system works.
Thanks for those SAR values, that's interesting. I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference between those values and to be honest I'm not that bothered. It's more of an interesting thing to talk about for me. The iphone looks interesting though, it would be nice to actually use one and see if it actually makes a difference in everyday use.
One thing to clarify is that while I'm totally sure that I can feel radiowaves I'm not too sure that it makes much of a difference to health, especially seeing as flying is a massive dose of radiation and so on.
More more thing to add, the signal effect drops off almost exponentially so if you hold it just 1cm from your ear you've made a reduction. I also prefer to keep it away from the centreline of the body, away from the spine.
That said, I wonder if SAR ratings are a cynical way to sell more phones, no?

Mobile operators in the UK have run their own tests where they've told people that a mast is active (and received assurances that those people can feel the EMF resulting in headaches/palpitations) when the masts have actually been off.
In the 70s and 80s it was electricity pylons being blamed for cancer, now people have grown up not thinking twice about them hypochondriacs have latched onto mobile masts, wifi (remember those "leave a chicken breast on your router and it'll cook" stories?), and now they're starting to blame wind farms.

Honestly, your perception is likely heavily weighted by the fact that in cities, etc you know all those devices are surrounding you. Most of what you are feeling is psychosomatic all things considered. Whatever the case, the only way to know will be long-term, properly-executed studies where perception biases can be overridden.

Best4Power 3230mah Battery - Stock Dimensions

Supposedly it has stock size but with more capacity. I'm interested because I will NOT use the fatter ones. The 4x is already big for my pockets. I'm not making it fatter to boot. But I'm skeptical too. So anybody use one yet?
Mine will be here shortly, and I'll update this thread if it's really worth buying or not.
But till I have it in hand/phone, I'm still curious what everyone else's experience has been, if any.

Looks interesting, I would buy it, but they ship only to usa anyway be careful, some of these chinese (I think so) batteries self-explodes. It's a bit dangerous for your leg (I know it's not so funny when it really explodes)

Hmm. I didn't consider a battery that fits like stock an accessory, and I didn't notice that batteries were listed there. I mean accessories are optional things in my mind. The battery is integral to the phone. Sorry about that.

The thing with these Chinese batteries is that they are made out of cheap materials. If they don't blow up, then the materials inside the battery degrade at a much quicker rate than the OEM batteries. Then it will basically be like having the original battery inside the phone again. I had a 3000mah battery from eBay and it doesn't do anything to increase the battery life, also a piece of the bottom fell off so now it doesn't even fit in the phone properly.

They probably just got the same battery and said it was 3200mah lol
The only one that I use is the MPJ battery. It doesn't offer any more real life usage but it doesn't heat up as much as the original battery and so far its worked reliably.

For what it is worth, here is my opinion (take it or leave it lol)
3500mAh in the same form factor as the original battery? I've not noticed any massive leaps in battery technology of late, and I don't really see how there can be THAT much extra juice in a box the same size especially seeing as they are both LiOn battery packs. Given the "reliability" of Chinese imports I would imagine the quoted capacity is just what they wanted to put on the label to make that particular battery look more appealing than others on the market.
I also have concerns from a safety point of view and have also heard reports of the phone detecting that a replacement battery is not the manufacturer's original part and refusing to work with it. Does anybody have any experience of this (Perhaps as a different topic in the appropriate place if one doesn't already exist, to save this thread going off-topic)?

Indeed it does detect it and stock rom doesn't boot with a non-genuine battery, but this can be easily fixed.

So far so good. I'm not sure if it's any better than a stock cap OEM battery, but it works just as well, so it's a viable replacement one. Doesn't get hotter, or do anything the OEM one didn't do.
I played Shuttle for probably 3-4 hours total on max volume the whole time through the 3.5mm jack in my car, used WiFi, took about 15 pics, and used my phone to keep up with my PDF work schedule, so the screen was on quite a bit too.
ROM is SlimKat 8.9.
Kernel is Werewolf @ 1.5Ghz max and CFQ io - GPU is max 512Mhz

If that's what it sounds like (leave the screen on the whole time and see how long the battery lasts) I don't know when I'll have time for that, but I'll try. I assume I'd also need to be doing things with the phone while the screen is on to be practical?

Nah just continue your normal usage for a day from 100% and go to the battery screen you posted above and press the screen bar.

Includes downloading around 400MB via WiFi (not sure why it doesn't show WiFi, but whatever), rebooting into recovery and flashing CM 11, new Gapps, then installing various apps after setting up my Google account at first bootup. Screen on the whole time it shows. Around 40 minutes.
Then after turning everything off for a while.
I'll get a more normal day in with it, and post up the screen on time and battery level when I can.

Hi, can you share the latest SOT after normal usage? You need to go a step further and click the screen icon and show the next graph, this will show the SOT in hours; mins.

Well the top image shows the screen on time. The whole time the phone was running off the battery the screen was on.
If I think about it I'll get another one actually showing the specs for that specific part, but that won't really prove anything else for me. Just a formality.
I use the phone daily, and the cheapo battery is still holding up fine too.

Here ya go. Should be noted that I could not be called a heavy user as you can see from the specs, but the point for me is that this battery is just as good as the stock one, but it's new. It also did not start dropping off any quicker when it got to that low capacity, so it's a good solid all around battery.
I also don't use adaptive brightness, or run the screen on a bright setting ever, so that helps. And most times my phone is in airplane mode.

MI3W (Over)heating

Hi all,
So I got a question related to MI3W, the cooling system of it, and mainly:
Is it normal that while I'm doing basic stuff like internet browsing, using Tapatalk, Skype, whatever, the phone temperature is usually around 45-60°C? I think that's waaaay too much. Also I can feel the back and front of the phone(display) heating a lot. One thing I would like to say is that it's not dependent on any ROM or kernel, I'm facing this issue even in MIUI.
Now, this is not such a problem, but, the real problem appears when it comes to games or performance demanding apps. To get higher framerate or performance, I switch to High Performance mode (performance governor). But then, the SoC temperature rises to 90°C and I can't even touch the display so I won't burn myself.
Now, this sometimes happens even in idle mode, even though it's not this high temperature, but still it's about 60-70°C.
It could get pretty unpleasant if I received a call and had to put the burning phone on my face.
So I'm wondering if there's anything I can do with this issue and if anyone else has it, and if this is eventually an issue of the whole MI3 model.
Last thing, no other phone with S800 has this issue, I saw Xperia Z1 mini and Nexus 5 and none of them had such a crazy temperatures, I know this version of S800 is the one with overclocked GPU but still, it's not that much of difference and I don't think it receives any right to heat as much as it does to me.

These apps won't tell you actual CPU temperature. The only place where you can find right one is at CPU-Z - Sensors - CPU Temperature

This app is actually accurate, CPU-Z reports the same temperatures, it just shows more sensors so I thought it would be better to just show a single temperature..

Not sure what the single one is, but i'm sure it's not the SoC temperature. CPU-Z of my friend who owns Xperia Z1 mini was showing 30-35°C in the tab with many sensors. Even after calculating Pi to 10,000,000 decimal places it didn't go above 40°C.. and his calculation time was even higher than mine. I found out that the calculation time is dependent on the SoC temperature, if it's overheating then the performance is lower. So I can't try it more times because it usually rises to 60-70°C.

I don't know but I do know the one I mentioned is the actual one.
Ans my phone too gets burning hot on gaming and stuff. It can't be helped, the story of MI phones.

Okay, thanks for letting me know it's not an issue just for me but in general. I like this phone but I'm a bit dissapointed by this not well thought off cooling. I'm sometimes afraid the heat would destroy the LCD at one point because sometimes it's really intensive. Mostly after flashing an update for a ROM and upon the "Optimizing apps" screen.
One strange thing that I don't get though, is why nobody else is complaining about it, nor any reviews of the phone are mentioning this excessive heating.
I've been thinking about this for some while now.

Don't use while charging and stay with balance power profile. These are mainstream device so don't push these to limits very often (these are not dedicated gaming device) and limited passive cooling for SOC. Otherwise you will inviting a premature component failure. Device temperature is also closely associated with ambient temp so if your ambient is close to 24is C the device will sustain performance bit better.

The problem is I can't use it while charging anyway, because the phone otherwise discharges faster than charges.
Also mostly I use balanced performance mode, since I know it starts to heat a lot and it gives me way too much performance for what i need most of the time. But when it's time for games, I need to use high performance mode otherwise the game isn't running so smooth. And in case of Piano Tiles, I experience unpleasant random stuttering of the game, which pretty much makes it unplayable. And that's not even any resource demaning game. So I'm forced to switch to HiPerf. mode anyway But it's really not that I'm overloading the phone and having it as a rendering station
About Mi3 being mainstream: I don't believe it's mainstream for its initial price, even though it was cheaper than other manufacturer's devices. Anyway, I will be careful with it. Still I don't get, if this is a mainstream device, why did Xiaomi use S800 SoC? It was a flagship when it was released 2 years ago. To me it looks like a fail from this point of view, trying to make a mainstream device(not so much dedicated to cooling) using high end components(which in fact need a better cooling).

Unfortunately MIUI has bad thermal tweaks...blah blah..
So i suggest you to lower the screen resolution from FHD to HD (Not much of difference) and lower the lcd density. By this u will see hell lot of difference (I tested this method myself).
** Secondly try using a good ROM with Better cpu and thermal tweaks like if u want MIUI taste then try "SMIUI"
Or use Mettallium OS (I use this myself)
*** (OPTIONAL) u can flash some .zips that contain some tweaks and many improvement (u can find them on XDA easily)
like Lspeed etc.
I was facing the overheating issues but lowering down the resolution does the magic.

Yes it does heats up during installing roms (optimizing apps). I cool it off by air forced cooling (holding device in front of cooler during installation else battery discharges by 20 percent).
Normal heating during gaming, but stays cool in daily use... on cm 12.1 stock kernel

If you are using miui. Try God's Kernel R3 or R4. And report.

That seems to be the problem of Snapdragon 800.

Okay, so a little update - Recently I reached an incredible temperature of 107°C on the CPU chip!!! And then thermally shut down. I think this isn't fun anymore. I don't know if i have some defective piece or if it's normal for all MI3's but I'm starting to think about returning the phone or just claiming a replacement. Both the front and back of the phone gets hot very soon, just by watching some youtube vids or browsing internet...or JUST having the phone simply unlocked and idling. The temperatures don't go under 40°C. I think that this is the reason why MI3 was cheaper than other phones with the same SoC.
In the worst case, I will revert the partition table back to stock, install latest MIUI 7 on it and send it to a service center.

The superhigh temperatures were in recovery and before the phone boots up. I was reaching 80-90°C in any ROM, including MIUI(while gaming) and 60-70°C at normal use. Sadly, no ROM affects the temperature, it's always high. I was using all stock kernels, until yesterday, when I flashed Moshi stock kernel, expecting lower temperatures. Well, they were lower, but still 60°C with JUST watching youtube videos, that's a bit too much.
I think Xiaomi just didn't think off the cooling well, because Nexus 5 and Galaxy S5 don't suffer from so high temperatures, 60°C at most while gaming, and people at forums complain about getting 50°C while i'm glad to have 45°C in idle state. And I'm not talking about the surface temperature, I'm talking about the on-chip temperature, which to me is more important.

GUYS - What if https://youtu.be/hZDNpp--E0Y was applied to MI3? Maybe my device is just poorly greased and the heat doesn't transfer to the aluminium plate effectively. That could be a solution, if it's possible, which I believe it is, because MI3 has the same aluminium plate on the back of the LCD as a heatsink(i believe it is aluminium).

I understand your problem. May be yours is a hardware problem. But try flashing God's kernel R3 or R4

I don't know about differences but I have revision 3.

I'm not sure if I am not noticing it, but I do not experience touch screen sensitivity issues when I play games or maybe they are minimal. Granted I play rhythm games and mobile rpgs, not fps or fighting games so maybe its just me.

Revision 1, and I'm having massive heat issues. Recording videos, especially with SteadyShot, HDR and 4K activated is stopped after 7 to 10 minutes usually, because the phone got too hot. I'd like to know if later revisions fix these issues.

Does Revision 3 fix the hardware issues?

I have Deep Green H8266 (Rev 3).
I don't experience too much heating issue and don't experience touch sensitivity issue either. Battery life is great and can be really amazing, a lot of time (reaching the point where I'm struggling to drain the phone's battery at night, just because I want to charge the phone at 15%). It is also lightning fast, superb gaming performance, and has great multitasking performance, too.

H8266 Rev 4 here, just bought it a couple of weeks ago after frying my Z5p, I had no intention on getting this phone, was going to wait til the end of the year to see what Sony will offer but necessity obliged ?
Absolutely zero issues, no heat or screen sensitivity as other mentioned, this thing stays cool and is lighting fast, battery life is insane, crossed a few times 10+ hours of SOT...just waiting tight for a drm fix to root and xposed (whenever that is)
The only thing that bugs me is the esthetic of the phone, not a fan of the back side at all (finger print sensor works pretty damn well though, still prefer a side placing)

Interesting. I'm not getting anywhere close to those battery times either. Can you run the GeekBench battery test? I'm at 4 hours and something...

I will ask the support to repair my phone.
Switch it to the latest hardware revision.
And see if this fix my touch screen issue.

Impossible physically. The battery is not big enough to sustain that long of a SOT no matter how efficient you claim to be. unless sony changed the battery capacity in their latest revision, conning people who got earlier revisions.

I haven't had any of the issues reported, the phone never seems to get hot either but I don't play games very much and for the time that I just got slightly warm. I agree with the battery life, it's really amazing compared to everything else I've ever owned.

I've been on xda long enough and I'm not the type to post nonsense ?
This pic below is not from my phone, it's from the xz2 thread on Esato, so you can see that I'm not the only one either...I didn't take a screen shot of mine when I crossed 10+ hours (I will next time)... I said that passed it a few times, mostly range in the ≈9+ hours...
I don't game, few accounts with push notifications and an email client with 3 imap notifications (so those run in the background constantly)
This one below is from my phone...I'm at 1.5 hours of SOT with a 12% down from full charge...you can extrapolate the end results ?
System optimization is an important factor, not only battery size...they did a great job with the xz2...

and WHAT exactly do you want to test? We don't know what they changed, might the supplier from glue which holds the Screen on the phone, might be the a different speaker/microphone inside or something else smaller.
Else we wouldn't be a rev4 already. Changing something during production is no small feat...

The Battery inside the XZ2 has:
Min: 3060mAh 11.6Wh
Typ: 3180mAh 12.3Wh
So i've measured the powerdraw for Screen+Phone Idle/flightmode:
Minimum Brightness uses 0.49W
Maximum uses 1.83W
Screen Off uses 0.24W
Doing the Math even at full brightness if you use your phone as E-Book reader you could reach 6h 45min At Minimum even over 25h!
So yes, it is very well possible.

Hm. Before the XZ2 I've had a Xiaomi Mi 6, which impressed me more in terms of battery. Smaller screen, bigger battery (and much slimmer phone).
And IMHO it's not better, perhaps worse than my LG V20. I did take a lot of photos, which does seem to drain the battery badly.
I really wonder what they have done through the revisions. It seems clear to me now that revision 1 had some serious flaws (or maybe my unit is defective), especially in terms of cooling.

No one except for Sony probably knows. But it is interesting to see, which revisions made it to the market and which didn't. And if people report on issues with their phone, we can at least figure out a bit what was fixed. Also now we know there are 4 revisions so far. Mine is revision 1 and says demo only, not for sale. So maybe it is also possible to find out when these phones were released.
