Is IE unusable on the kaiser with the bug i hear about? I usually use the joypad for scrolling down, is it still the same?
Compared to the Hermes, how fast is the Kaiser at building pages up? On any big pages (eg. ebay) the Hermes really grinds to a snails pace and even when you think it's finished if you scroll down it's still (slowly) inserting images. Sometimes it can take nearly 60secs to finish showing an eBay page.
cheers, John
Which bug?
I use PIE with PIEPlus 2.2 and it works fine.
It is slow though, compared to my old Magician WM2003SE But thats obvious (WM2003SE is not flash based OS, no persistent-memory, thats why faster).
I am waiting Opera Mobile 9, which I am not sure will ever be released!
Duke Nukem Forever
I don't notice any difference with the Hermes. What bug are you talking about exactly?
By the by: opera mini beta 4 runs great on the Kaiser.

Yes it works, but the scrolling gets laggy once you have scrolled down a bit. The page download times are probably on a par with the TyTn. The Touchflo finger scrolling works better (once you get the hang of it).
Opera Mini works faster and scrolls OK.
Mike
Im not having any issues with PIE in general and I'm already getting used to the scroll feature. In fact I picked up my Trinity today and found it annoying when I had to use those fiddly scroll bars.
I wonder how it compares to the experience on the new iPod Touch?
I heard from a friend that the browsing experience on that was very intuitive - but then he is an apple nerd!
My bigger issue with the Tytn II is still the radio used. I am having real problems with the gprs/3G switch and both phone and internet connection have major problems coping when I am in 1 or 2 bars of 3G.
And I am still rarely getting a full 3G signal which was not the probelm with the later radios I have on my Tytn and Trinity.
I will try my Vodafone SIM tomorrow and see if it makes a difference.

this is the bug i was talking/hearing about.
With the extra power and extra chips I was hoping the page building issue would have truly gone, it's my biggest gripe with my Hermes. My other gripe was the poor video playback on my Hermes (which has improved thanks to many WM6 roms), I hear this hasn't improved much either. I think I'll wait until a new ROM or a new device...
Touchflo doesnt work with my installation of Opera Mobile (8.60). Would have thought there would be 20 million threads on it by now so am thinking its just me with the issue.
Is touchflo something that has to be written into third party software of should it would with anything?
Opera Mini is the Java version correct?
New ROM will not fix that because it will be still the same IE.
IE is just slow, that's all.
Try Opera Mini and enjoy the super fast browsing experience.
You will never look back to IE, trust me.

Yes, Opera Mini is a Java application.
But it is running fine and superb.
Here what I got it installed in my device:
1. Install JBED-JAVA_MIDLET_MANAGER.2007.08.02.2.1
Get it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=49222&d=1188897204
2. Use IE and browse to mini.opera.com/beta
And follow the instruction to install it.
Note: Choose "High memory" version.
You are done.
Now, read this article below :
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-...ed-includes-info-new-java-midlet-manager.html
You will be able to:
1. Make a shortcut to the "Programs" folder
Then using the "Settings->Button" you can change the IE softkey to execute this shortcut.
2. Get rid of the network security warning.
That's it

Phew! Took a bit of work, but worth it
All thats left is for it to be set as the default browser and take links from emails.
Cheers for that buddy.
The shortcut part just doesn't work for me. I use Esmertec and my shortcut based on what I see in the appsdb folder is
#30"\windows\jeodek.exe" -run s3_
Whatever I do it gives me the message - Could not find MIDlet suite s3_
The file in appsdb is s3_suite.jar. Even still, I tried from number s0_ to s3_ to no avail.
Hope somebody can help.

I get that same error - unable to find Suite 0 or 1 or whatever I put in.
Also the change in the selector file has my OperaMini still asking for permission. Any suggestions????
Thanks
Guys, I'm still getting the permission warnings as some other Opera 4 users are describing. I have done everything in this post including the selector.utf file. Has anyone figured out what might be causing this?

i could only get it to work witn Cloudyfa's JBed, not with the default JMM.
I finally got it to work with Cloudyfa's JBed. For some reason, JBed wasn't installed properly. It wasn't showing up and Remove Programs. I reinstalled it, reinstalled Opera, applied the shortcut/network warning fix, and all is working perfectly.
For other people having this problem, make sure JBed is showing up in the Programs list and in Remove Programs before you install Opera. Seemed to do the trick.
I will be doing all of this tonight, Thanks for the tips.
Same here, I too get the error message could not find suite s0_. The number is correct, but i noticed i dont have any .jar files in the appdb folder... Any ideas?
I also didn't have any .jar files in my appdb folder. I did see some files with s2_ extensions (eg. s2_.jah and _s2.obj) so I changed my suite link to s2_ and it worked. Once I got the link to work, I then copied the selector.utf file from appdb to my PC and ran the Fix.exe editor on it and copied it back to the Kaiser. Works perfectly with no more permission dialog, thanks so much for sharing!
My squence;
1-Install Jbed
2-Install Opera Mini and test to verify it works.
3-Create link in programs folder and test
4-Copy off selector.utf and "fix", copy back and it should all be good, with no more permissions required.
5-Map the program link to a hard key.
6-Crack a cold beverage of choice, life is good

Hmm.. no downloader for Tilt or any HTC models... maybe we'll have to try a different Windows Mobile phone? I will try 8525
EDIT: What the hell? Does this thing work off of Java? Like the midlet manager? Why isn't there just a cab or an exe? I'm confused...
How much different is it from the Beta?

Just connect from Kaiser PIE, and download it... it is java Midlet based browser... so no CAB nor EXE to install....

They don't have the kaiser listed yet but the one we want is the "advanced version", which is the one that all the other WM devices use. You don't want the "basic" one. It still prompts you for the stupid "trusted application" every time, I'll just have to hack the reg once again.
The best part: It displays the FULL web page in the browse. Not some hacked up, trimmed down page, but the full page. You then click on the area of the page you want to browse and it zooms in. You can then scroll around using your fingers (think touchFlo) or hit the magnifying glass to zoom out. Yes, it is kinda like the iphone, but it does work very nice.

It prompts for net access even with the high memory version.

This is my very first time using opera mini, and I must say I like it. Its working really well so far. One handed browsing is simple. Web pages look alot better, and work out better. One setting I changed was to make images medium quality instead of low. Otherwise, I like it. It is kinda like an Iphone.

was that in the terms and conditions? if so its just a warning that data charges can occur while using it if your network applies charges for data. if your on a data plan then dont worry it wont cost anything extra.
It's a java app, so, it won't be avail as a cab file. Opera Mobile is, Opera Mini is not. This is Opera Mini (which I love).
I just installed the latest build of PointUI (www.pointui.com) on my TyTN II, and really like the slick interface and touch capability. Anyone else running this app, and if so have you run into any issues? The fact that the software will remain a free product makes it worth the "testing".
Thanks.
James
Theres a couple of threads on this already. I have installed it but my TyTN II locks up every time within 2 minutes of starting, even after a soft-reset so have given up for now.
I may give it another go when they fix all the bugs listed on their forums and add more features to make it more usable and by then hopefully my lockup issues will be solved as well.
I did use it for some days but I hate that the 'close' button is not an actual close button at all. It just minimizes the app instead of closing it. So it is very memory consuming.
But I did like the interface and the way it worked. Just wait a little longer to have them some issues solved.
plexat they have just fixed the close program issue today with this update
http://www.pointui.com/files/tests/hardwarekeys2/home.zip
Copy the exe over the old one and you now have a close button instead of a minimize one!
It also fixes the issue with hardware buttons not working.
the background color is horrid and the icons are goofy. but the app itself is pretty slick and i like the update manager.
i haven't used it that much, but the only bug i've experienced is while swiping my finger from side to side to move the applet ribbon the touch cube activates. i didn't know it could activate with a side to side motion.
anyway, for a beta product this thing is incredible. it has huge potential. after revisions, i think this will be a must-have app.
just installed it on my phone and it works for about 2 mins before freezing, once already its reduced my screen to randon red and yellow dots, so thats getting uninstalled.
shame really as the 5 mins i did get to spend playing with it i was quite impressed
or i would if it had a proper uninstaller
very nice!
Just installed this in a WM6 emulator (having no real WM6 hardware at this time) and I must say it is superb! It feels like an iPhone (heresy to say something around here, I know). I almost have to say that it is better then TouchFLO (Yet another heresy to say something around here).

No problem. I dont really know how I found it I have a tendancy to go to forums and open all threads that interest me by holding ctrl down and clicking on them. Then I read through and close them as I go.
I just happened to come across the update in one of the threads I was reading! One of the developers had posted a link to the file in the middle of a thread.

The cube activating is due to your touchflo config file. All you need to do is edit the config file to exclude pointui and the cube will not activate while pointui is open.

Great app, but the problem is it cannot start my 3G connection when e.g. updating weather, or using update manager.

You know, the saddest part about it all is that even with our $700+ dollar devices (unless you're like me and sold your soul to AT&T... $150 Kaiser baby!) we're all dying for a UI like this. Tell you what, if it wasn't for you guys and the xda-developers community, there's no way in hell I would have gotten this phone. Dutty's ROMs are magical stuff, man. Tell you what, after a few more weeks/months of dev. and a full version with a less... erm... blue background, I'd pay $50 for this program if it allows me to get through my day without ever seeing any part of the traditional Windows Mobile UI. I'd pick it up for $100 if they included integrated task manager, file explorer, media player, web browser, and other essential software. Hell, I'd gladly go higher if they allowed me to never have to see any part of Windows Mobile GUI again. The Kaiser kills the iPhone in functionality (that's why we're all here, right?), but man pointUI is a step in the right direction towards closing the "sexiness" gap.
Okay, rant over.
I'm note sure I would pay $100 for the UI, but I do agree that this is exactly what Windows Mobile needs. Overall function is great and with just a few minor fixes/changes this would be the killer app for any WM device.

I cannot agree more than what you say. HTC is a superb tool designed by engineers with some "help" from designer people. I love it, but my god the interface is sometimes not sexy at all (just compare the icons of pointui as an exemple
Iphone is a superb tool made by designers. I love it from a purely design point of view, but it lacks a lot of things engineers love (openness, 3G+, GPS, etc.)
Now the TYTNII plus a pointUI type interface would be the top must. The very few minutes I spent with pointUI, I loved it. I will keep it as soon as it really work and have more customization.
Now, I am sticked to HTC, because it is quite easier to adapt a new interface to an existing device, than the contrary
Thx

I had the same.. fairly easy to fix:
get yourself a registry editor (PHM for example)
navigate to: \HKCU\software\microsoft\today\keys\112
change: Default string to 'phone' (from Home)
change: Open string to '\windows\cprog.exe'
then i'd do a soft reset.
should work..
hth.
It would be awesome if there was an application to use the MBW-150 bluetooth watch on the G1. Is anyone developing one?

nice idea even though i dont mind the g1's contact app i know it can be better.
some things i think you should add:
-ability to view contacts in groups or categories
- if possible assign ringtones to group
- have the number/letter show up when scrolling like the icontact for wm
- integrate it so that when someone send you a number you can long press and add number to you contact manager or you can make it retrieve contacts through google.
- have birthday

[REQ] Android App Ideas
hello android users,
I am a developer on the windows mobile side of things (see the M2DC thread for an example of my work) and I am thinking I might like to move over to developing for android.
I have a few problems, first, I don't have a device, this is not a huge deal at the moment because I can just use the SDK emulator for now, but I will be purchasing a device later on if I like developing for this platform. The second problem is that I need help with ideas for some simple apps... since I do not have a G1 to handle on a daily basis I don't really get the chance to feel things out and discover where an app might come in useful.
So my request is this. Does anyone have any ideas for "simple" android applications? Anything they wish the phone did better? Or a simple functionality that they wish the phone had? Reading through this forum it looks like there is a demand for OCR and possibly something to make applying new themes/skins easier? Or the TextTwist Game?
Of these 3 the game sounds the most interesting, the theme changer sounds good too because that is what my current development in windows mobile does, and the OCR is most likely out of my league at the moment.
I am open to any app ideas, I'm just looking for something to get me started and get me interested in the platform.
A few apps i would like to see as follows
1. A reboot option in shut down menu "if possible".
2. Digital Clock for homescreen
3. Screen Capture
4. Camera Zoom option
5. Checkers
Hope this helps a bit, good luck!
An application that kills tasks running in the background (although most folks say it's not possible right now), video recorder, night mode for camera, or Sirius/XM internet streamer similar to SiriusWM5 (I'm not sure that one is possible at the moment either...). Of course, you could create widgets (something more simple) but the source code won't be available to next year allegedly.
- Office suite (word and excel file editor)
- Youtube downloader from phone (like iphone mxtube)
- Super Mario Chronicles !!!!!
- FlightGear portable
- compiz fusion !! (not important but just tto test phone power to my friend that have an Iphone)
- More widget

You can view contacts in groups - Contacts - Menu - Display Group (created on GMAIL page).
Ringtones to groups would be nice, but for now you may just display a group and assign them all a ringtone
The long press to dial/save numbers in SMS has been addressed and should be in the final version of Android 1.0.
A birthday? Ehrmm.... Would personally prefer that to stay where it is (in my calendar).
I would like it to integrate the Dialer and searching for contacts, so i can just start typing a name or a number and it would show me the matching contacts. (I think SpellDial does this but is not very robust).
Thanks

Thank you for the suggestions, and I am still open to hearing more
I guess "simple" is also relative to your level of proficiency in Java and mobile development. As far as holes in the shipped operating system that could use fixing, there are many points to attack. Some could be done in the JVM, others would have to be done in native c. Examples include:
An office suite
Video recording
Touchscreen text input (API will expose this in 09Q1)
A simple but high-quality word or puzzle game would be great tho.
Edit: welcome aboard the Android side too ;-)

I agree with you 100%, the system stuff sounds good, but of the posted ideas and from what I have seen there is a small demand for "simple" games, and this is the direction I plan on going initially, games are fun to make and they should give me a decent overview of what is involved in throwing together an app.
As far as my java proficiency... I can definitely get by. I have a few websites that rely completely on the google web toolkit, and my bachelors degree was typical of an early 2008 CS curriculum, 2 years of java to learn what OO programming is, and then 2 years of C to learn about the fun stuff (pointers, threads, compilers, OS's, etc...). but like I said before I am just looking to make a traditional application, and I think that it is going to end up being a game of some sort,
I don't have a device yet, if I get one it would be pretty much a development only device, so I am trying to get my feet wet with an app or 2 before I decide to get one. I did manage to get a few minutes with a G1 today and I must say that the device feels so much better than my Titan, that capacitive touchscreen is awesome.
Once I get something going I will startup a new project on google code so I can take advantage of the free svn server and start posting my progress

I have to admit that might be the first time i've seen the word "fun" and "pointers" so close together ;-)

Capacitive touch screens feel great and and quite responsive but they do have their caveats too. The main one is that accuracy of input is lower than with a stylus. You'll have to keep that in mind when you design the UI. You can scale the size of the emulator on screen to match an actual G1's physical screen size (emulated pixels might be mangled though).

Looking forward to it There are some specific android development communities you can check out too for more relevant talk on android java programming. anddev.org I think is a popular site.
This thread is for discussion among those of us TD2 users who have dumped, or might dump, TF3D in favour of either another Today screen replacement or the stock WinMo 6.1 Today screen.
Thus far I'm finding the TD2 a hell of a lot more usable without TF3D. Little things like being able to use a lock password with a 15 minute delay, getting auto-Capitalization when writing texts are good, along with a much faster phone, much less memory usage and....it even seems I'm getting better battery life.
Most of the bugs people are reporting are actually TF3D issues which are resolved by ditching TF3D.
So has anyone else taken the plunge and gone back to the standard WinMo6.1?
I used to installed Ultimate Launch then Spb Mobile Shell in my original Diamond. Now I am using TF3D in my Diamond2. I wish Mobile Shell 3 may upload a more bug free version for the new device such as HD and Diamond2 and I may switch back to Mobile Shell. Perhaps WM6.5 release may change my plan and look forward to what HTC still put their manila on top of those WM6.5 device.
As I said, the thread is for people who are NOT using TF3D.
Personally I think WM6.5 will render TF3D completely redundant by handling the one thing it's good at - gloss.
Another thing I've noticed about not using TF3D is that the phone's response to tilting it to landscape and back is a lot faster.
My case as well: I've got the feeling that TF3D is more like a heavy bag.
As soon as I deactivated, the phone became easier to be handled and plus, presenting extra memory/battery resources as well.
However, a Launcher is very much needed, since neither the TF3D, nor the WM's Today screen don't offer the possibility to get to your action choice with only one button-tap.
Is there a good free launcher which can do that?
cheers!
I'm finding judicious use of which apps you put into the Start Menu helps a lot - the apps I use on a daily basis are all there, others I can get to via their presence on the Today screen, such as Tomtom.
The start menu seems to appear quicker than the TF3D one does as well.
Another thing I'm liking is the Today plugin for the RSS reader - TF3D2 didn't seem to handle RSS alerts well, when you acknowledged them it didn't take you into the RSS reader.
Best of all though is the fact I can now password protect my phone properly and delay it for 15 mins so I'm not badgered for the password all the time.
I'm finding that I don't need the stylus much either, despite the smaller menus and so on.
I just can't get over the extended battery life and improved memory usage though!
Without TF3D and three apps running (calendar, contacts and file explorer) my memory is loaded only 38%.
With TF3D it never went under 50%.
As for the battery, I can only say that it seems that lasts longer, but I didn't really seriously monitor it.
I was using PointUI Home2 free version on my Diamond, it's great. Less memory usage, and huge customisability. I had 5 "tabs" with the homescreen (see attachment) calendar & tasks, comms, stock, and weather. Worked great.
The default Home2 theme is a little mucky, but there is a huge range of alternative themes. I made a nice black one that suits the diamond.
If I get rid of TF3D then
- can I alter by normal threaded SMS for to show more than 1 line that I have typed in my new reply (like TF3D does)?
- can I still create push internet sites without TF3D?
- will the hardware button for program files still work? Will this take me to the same screen?
Can I exit TF3D without disabeling it just to check out how things look?
I have disabled and tweaked so much of TF3D that I am also thinking that it is going to be off my device with the 6.5 ROM anyway .... why not do it now.

I believe so as this is an Opera thing but I don't use Push Internet at all so I can't be sure

Assuming you mean the flag button, yes it still brings up the Start Menu, but you'll get the normal WM6.1 one, which contains your most recently used apps, your seven favourite apps you've selected to appear on the menu, a shortcut to Settings and a shortcut to all your Programs.

Just go into All Settings, Personal, Today and uncheck the TF3D box to turn TF3D off. Give it a few days of usage before you make your mind up. Don't forget to turn on and customize the other Today screen plugins to get the full experience.

My thoughts entirely. In a couple of months' time TF3D will be completely redundant anyway.
Incidentally, I've started getting right into Today screen plugins...TodayAgenda is frankly the best app on my phone. I use the Todo (Tasks) app more than any other app on my phone. TodayAgenda allows you to have your task list (with only the active tasks showing, huzzah!) right there on your today screen, so you don't even need to unlock your phone to see what you need to do next! And you can complete tasks and create new ones right there on the Today screen. It's awesome and I can see this becoming my new most-used widget.
Just this one plugin renders TF3D utterly redundant as far as I'm concerned!
The RSS reader has a plugin too, which is really useful.
Does anyone else have good suggestions for really useful Today plugins? I tried PointUI Home2 but that's more of a replacement than a plugin.
Hi Jim,
By TodayAgenda you mean the calendar inputs shown in the Today screen?
If this is so, I'm a little disapointed because it shows only the next one, not the next week ones, let's say...
Is there a way to have more than one event listed?
thanks

No I'm talking about TodayAgenda - it's a plugin, you have to download and install it. It lets you look as far ahead as you like and does both Todos and Calendat entries (although I only use it for Todos).
Also, try WMP Status 1.0, it shows you on the today screen the artist, album, track and track number that you're currently playing in Media Player. Very useful as you don't need to unlock your phone to see what you're listening to!

Incidentally, if you go into Settings / Today and highlight CALENDAR, click OPTIONS, you can set it to show all upcoming appointments instead of just the next one.

Thank you Jim.
It seems that I've missed the Option button.
Thanks for the TodayAgenda tip too.

No problem. Check out WMP Status 1.0 as well, it's really useful when you're listening to music!
Ok, since I droped TF3D, I also dropped the phone dialer skin, leaving the WM one, which is fine for me but apparently it has a bug:
it doesn't show me the calls&contacts, in its scroll-down field, even though there is some information present, because if I tap, it opens the call's details window.
In other words, it's like a list on which the items have the same font color like the list's background.
Did anybody experienced the same?
Is it possible that another dialer skin would change this behavior?
I put Phonealarm and today agenda straight on my phone and removed TF3D its just too restricting. I can get to everything i need with one click on the home screen none of this swishing fingers to get to stuff.
I really don't know what some of yoy are complaining about...
Not Capitalizing the first letter... NONSENS, when i write a SMS the first letter of a sentence is capitalized..
Memory consumption.......
Why do you think this device has so much ???? Because HTC wants you to run TF3D and still have more then enough memory free to run Whatever app......
I was sceptical at first too. But if you give it a chance you will see that once you have seen every screen (without a reboot) it's VERY fast, and very comfortable...
I am sure i will keep TF3D for a while !

I used to run 2 Today pages using Second Today.
Weather (SPB Traveller) , CLauncher and SPB Phone (can't beat the options here) on the 1st Today. SPB Diary full screen on the other (2nd) Today.
Custom links to Internet and GPS Navigation complete the productive config.
I travel for business. Calendar and Contacts and the most important.
TF3D Calendar can't make top 20 on market I would say. Contacts in TF3D are death by scrolling (by default). The new D2 Dialer is more productive for contacts than any of the TF3D contacts screens!
I agree that all these other UIs that don't allow Today plugins are missing the point. People want to pay for and use specialist programs where certain functionality is important to them.

With a WVGA screen, I really wish there were a work around to be able to place more than 7 apps in the start menu. Can't believe I've never found a hack for this.
Alternatively, I love to be able to route the start button to the All Programs folder but never been able to find this either. Two simple things that must not be easy or else we would have seen them before.
BTW, I unchecked TF3D within 24hrs (a month ago). I use SPB Mobile Shell for the shell. For the today screen (WM 6.1) I use Today Agenda, Google Search, Elecont Weather (paid) or WeatherBugDirect (free). I also run all my tasks and appointments from the traditional today screen via TodayAgenda.
