program memory question & upgrading - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Hi everyone,
am quite new to these boards, and have only just got myself a secondhand xda IIs. In the last half a yer I have owned a HTC hermes, universal & kaiser but have finally settled on the BA because the design just suits me more. So far so good- am very happy!
I am a complete noob though and having just upgraded to WM6 from WM2003SE (following the WIKI guide & wizard) I am a bit puzzled about my phomnes' memory capacity and what goes where....
Reading over the forum I have heard how the reformating of exended rom (?) etc can increase your available storage to 128mb as part of the upgrade process. This I did with the unlocker and formatting tool. But upon upgradeing it seems I have only 64mb available for storage , but 100mb for 'programs'.... I am a bit confused. To make it worse when I load programs on the phone it actually reduces the storage capacity available rather than the 'program' memory- of which I have 75mb free that I can't seem to get at!! Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong or else point me in the direction of where I can educate myself about this? ....I know it is a very basic question, but am a complete novice to pdas since the last 6 months so please don't flame me!!
Thanks

Newbie Help - Which ROM to upgrade to ????

Hi Guys,
ive been using the wizard now for around a month and finding some goods things with it. The only downside so far is the speed ; can sometimes get very slow even after ending all programs in the memory. After reading through some threads on here, it looks like it may be worth upgrading the ROM to speed things up. Can anyone give me some ideas and if you think its really worth updating? Thanks.

The rom is the OS of the phone (MDA)
The extended rom is the extra's of the provider like gprs settings, MMS settings...special dedicated to the provider....etc etc
Where to find XDA Mini-s I Wizard Rom?

xda IIS Upgrade

i am new to the xda mobiles but recently bought a second hand XDA IIS which by default has Win 2003 Mobile...
I have come across a number of WM5 Mobile packages but am unsure about which is the correct one to use to upgrade my unit....
Also some Microsoft forums say that hardware devices running WM2003 cannot be upgraded to WM5 but this site seems to point towards that it is possible....
Can anyone point me at the correct WM5/Boot version packages etc and also explain how the upgrade does work on this hardware when Microsoft forums say otherwise??? Is it a case of hit and miss when upgrading (i read that a dodgy upgrade could make the hardware inoperable
SO The main question is, is it possible to destroy the Hardware if the upgrade fails...ie you would not be able to recover the device from a failed upgrade
well i almost killed my IIs for a couple fo time, but that's about it.
plz read http://wiki.xda-developers.com/.
if u still have question, pls post here again.
btw, the latest rls by Helmi_c is very cool, so u may wanna check it out after u have read wiki.

You can see what ROM I use in my signature and I find it pretty good considering the 50+ apps I have on it. The odd problem but with all the software I have got on it that is to be expected but it is amazing to be running WM5 on a device which officially can only run WM2003SE.
I found that using Tu-Ma v1.3 the device was very slow and buggy but now with Hemli's ROM it runs great.

WM 2005 versus WM 2003

hello everyone!
since two weeks, i am theproud owner of my first pocket pc, a HTC Blue Angel!
i am now running wm2003, but after reading all those posts about upgrading, i am starting to think about doing so myself! but why should i do this?
what are the big advatages of wm2005 compared to wm2003?
are there disadvantages as well? (regarding stability and bugs?)
i would be really glad if yome of the more experienced ba users here could write down their pros & cons for running WM5/WM3 on the BA!
btw: i read thru xplode's upgrading guide (Guide.pdf) and in the end ("side notes") it says, that i could totally screw my ba when i exceed free sectors of the rom while cooking.... what excactly does this mean? and how can i avoid exceeding free sectors?
I am really looking forward to read your opinions about the two os...
THX IN ADVANCE!
krztf
I would definately go for wm5
main reason is the different memory handling
(no more lose of data after battery runs down)
Just download one of the ready made roms versions.
(as I understand, you are not ready to cook your own rom)
and be sure to read the wiki first
(and this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=243732 )
happy flashing
Wout
I could tell you this, my biggest reason to flash my BA to Wm05 because it has a better UI. N my 2nd biggest reason is because a lot of new programs written for wm05
Anyway if you afraid to brick your BA, I suggest you read carefully the wiki n don't use kitchen Rom, just use another rom that already cook by someone else. You could use Rom made by baniaczek or xplode.
I hoped it helps.
Well how should i say... i dont believe anyone here is still using 2003. Would this be enough for you? Try it, if you dont like it, downgrade back to 2003.
WM5 on Blue Angel is nice. But xplode rom and baniaczek rom are not really stable at the moment.
Tried both rom both got different problems... so I recommend you to wait for final release WM5 rom for BA thats free of bug.(Would it happen?)
Else if you wanted to try, you can try upgrading it... its really nice
Main reason is 60mb free ram..
and no more memory lost after battery going down
aha
thanks for all those answers!!!
but to be honest, i am still not sure if i should upgrade or not....
all those postings (here an din other threads) regarding pda overall speed, bluetooth and wifi problems, etc. make me kinda nervous! and i think, i am still anxious about frying my blue angel,... noobish but what can i do!
regarding the advantage of more free ram and no memory loss after battery's empty: is this really true?! always thought, i would need certain hardware as well, to benefit from this features...?
hope this discussion keeps goin'...
regards,krz

I'm using 2003se (rollback wm5->2003), because found some strange problems with baniachek's wm5 bluetooth profiles. ...
all the gory details ....
hi dasboot!
could you please describe those "strange problems"?
btw: does anyone know, if connecting to wlan routers works better with wm2005? as u can read in my other thread HERE, i have serious issues to solve here...
keep on posting!
krz
im rollbacked too.WM5 is nice looking..but for BA useless.
i found that WM3 work much better on it-and more important-the battery time:
wm5=max 8 hours,with mp3 6h
wm3=up to 16h with mp3.normal use 24/36h (older BA )
i use wlan only sometimes on hotspots-and only for e-mails.not a important criteria for me.
but, damn it..i would try out WM6 on it.suddenly it is unable to convert it to BA.
WM5 is not a software, it is one huge BAG!
wm5 is really good and I won't come back to wm2003. I have the R2 by baniaczeck and it works to me like a charm! I advice you to upgrade to wm5

Should I buy this phone?

I nearly bought this phone tonight before T-Mobile decided to charge me full price. I decided ebay might be a better place to buy one instead of paying 500 dollars for an iphone wannabe. It looks like a nice phone. I really like the wifi feature. I intend to use the wifi in my home as I already have wifi though out the house in use with my wifes computer and my PS3. It seemed like it would fit nice. I want to be able to surf the internet and maybe use google maps and google talk via the phone and wifi. I assume that can be done. After reading a few reviews though I put a screeching halt on my ebay bids. The phone seems to suffer from serious memory issues. Every negative review dealt with the memory or lock ups which I assume were also memory related. It appears the phone ships with a slow processor and not enough memory. I have no problems with buys a microSD card in the 2 to 4 gig range if that will solve the memory issues. I intended on buying one anyway for the application storage. Will the additional memory solve the issues with the phone? Are there updates to the phone that will correct these issues possible since many of the reviews were written? Are there currently SAFE work arounds that would correct the memory issues? I am no stranger to fooling around with this type of thing but at 300 dollars and considering that I am buying on ebay, I'm affraid i wont be in a position to gamble with the phone. If made the purchase through T-mobile I could possibly return the phone but ebay is another matter. Many of the sales are final. I dont want this phone if it requires flashing Rom's or extensive worj arounds to get the phone working.
So I will rely on your opinions on whether or not to make this purchase. If not this phone..what phone? I use t-mobile and dont want an unlocked phone so it would need to be one of their available products. I hear the MDA isnt bad. I really like the idea of a windows mobile OS as it would allow me to put darn near any app on the phone I want to. I want WIFI. I want to be able to use google talk and google maps on the phone and I really like the idea of surfing the web for free on my couch useing full functioning browsers not those mobile editions. Any recomendations if not the Hearld/Wing? Can I get the Wing to work properly and not freeze, hang up, lock up, or require constant reboots?
Point Blank you will have to change the rom on the wing in order to get some performance out of it, I switched from the MDA and the first day I got the wing I wanted my MDA back, but after changing the rom I forgot all about my big fat MDA even though The MDA has a 1250mAh battery and the wing just has a 1130mAh Batt.
If you do not want to do a rom upgraded you can take a shot at the Shadow, which has twice has much built in Memory and Storage, but its just a smartphone not a full PPC ................
also the MDA has been Dis-continued so if you buy one it will be a re-furb.
on second thought, You might just have to change the paging pool size and that should free up some Memory. and its too easy to do, and you can also delete and uninstall some files and programs you have no need for
I saw a few articles about both the rom and the page file. In your opinion, is changing the rom a wise thing to do with little to no support? I know that rom updates are risky, but on computers for example, its such a slick and easy process that there is little to no risk. Would a rom update on the wing be a wise thing to do? Is the available rom from a reputable sourse or is this something "Cody the 12 year old" made? I really want to make this wing my next phone but I dont want a 400 dollar PDA/cell phone that does neither correctly.

Hi,
I have not created my own rom, but have recooked a few version of the Touch-IT v2.3 wing by itje. Recooking a rom is a long process, creating a rom would take even longer.
I've flashed my wing over 80 times now during testing new roms and recooking.
I've bricked the phone a lot of times in the process but with the orignal ruu, its no big deal.
I'm pretty sure itje and other fine rom cookers in this forum are not 12 year olds.
If you want to buy the wing then buy it and tjem read the forum and learn how to flash new roms and change page pool size.
If you want a faster and more powerful phone then buy the Kaiser.
Thanks for reading.
funny you should mention the Kaiser. I just finished reading up on that one. Thats a serious phone. It's way more phone and money then I am prepared to pony up. Is this the next best option for me?
I didnt mean any offense on the 12 year old statement. I certainly wasnt refering to anyone in particular or members of this board. I was mearly trying to imply unproven rom techniques. It sounds like there is well tested processess probably on this board for flashing the rom. It will likely be a safe process for me.
Would there be another recomendation for T-mobile if not the Kaiser or the Wing?
T-mo currently has 3 windows based devices listed which are the Wing, The Dash and The shadow, both the Dash and the shadow are smartphones and not PPC .................. since you dont want to have to unlock another device to be able to use it, I would recomend that you get the wing and while its being shipped to you read this thread about changing the Paging Pool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=324955
When you get the phone try give the 4mb Paging pool a test (thats what I use)
and if you still do not like it or just want to see how much better it is try a Rom upgraded I recomend Touch-IT wing 2.3 cooked by itje and he is not the 12 yr old that beat you in online gaming ................ you can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340403
The installation is VERY VERY easy, but make sure to read the instruction in the folder and if you skip a line you will brick your phone ......................... but if you do brick your phone its pretty simple to unbrick, just re-flash the official rom .................... I can't seem to find that link (or too tired to look) but if someone can post it please do, If i come home tomorrow and no one has posted a link I will upload it for you
great info. phone purchased and ill be sure to give those tips a go. thanks

Just a note. Make sure you read and then RE-READ the instructions provided with every rom. And its also a good thing to get the T-Mobile official RUU as once the phone is bricked, this is the only rom that will unbrick it. I don't want to scare you because it's actually a very easy process. I have flashed itje's rom to several of my co-workers (were all T-Mobile employees) with no unrecoverable issues.

[Q] Help with Getting Started!

I'm very new and I'm still pretty lost and could use any suggestions or guides or help of any kind! I've had my NC for about a week now and the past couple of days I've been reading up and doing research on how I wanted to go about "Getting Started' with rooting.
So far I've come to the conclusion that I want to start with the rooting & booting from a microSD card and I'll be going out shortly to buy 2 (one for backups and one for booting/storing/using my NC) new SanDisk microSD cards (Class 2 or 4 and probably either - one 4GB & one 8GB or one 8GB & one 16GB). When I get back hopefully I can get started on my first rooting process.
I just had a couple of questions, but if anyone wants to suggest how to go about starting, it's greatly appreciated!
A.) With the new 1.3 on the NC, is there a different process I need to do to start rooting? Can I just pick up on one of the posts that was started during earlier NC releases? Or... Do I have to find a way to downgrade to 1.2 and then start rooting?
B.) Is there a specific version or way or guide that I should follow/go about when I first start and want to back up the original ROM?
C.) What's the best "to-date" ROM I should use after I do the back up process? CM7? And what is a "nightly build"? lol
That's all that I can think of for now... and I'm sorry if these are really stupid questions but like I said earlier... I'm super new to this. Once I actually get started I'll most likely try to follow a guide/step-by-step kinda thing (if I can find one).
Thank you! And if ANYONE has ANYTHING to say on the topic, PLEASE post because I guarantee I'll definitely find it useful and beneficial!
I don't have answers, but you have almost the exact same post I was about to write, so I thought I'd just ask a couple extra questions and add to this "I'm new to nook" post. I read about the Sandisk class 2 or 4 microsd cards being best, but does the size matter at all? In other words, would I be wasting money buying a 4 gb card vs a 32 gb one?
Well I'm glad I'm not alone in this one haha
I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that size doesn't matter lol... Sorry I couldn't help myself with that one.
But in all seriousness I really do think that while I was reading about which memory cards to get that the gigs doesn't matter, only the Classes do. I could be totally wrong but I hope not because I just bought a 4 and 8 gig. I would have gotten the 16 GB but they were already sold out.
Hopefully someone with knowledge on these questions will come along and give us the right advice.
So after reading the forums for hours upon hours and even more hours I've read/learned a lot more than I did when I posted this but I still have a few questions if anyone would be willing the lend a helping hand.
I read that you don't have to do anything different when installing to an SD (verygreen's guide) card but I still wanted to double check... so if anyone has a definite answer please let me know.
I'm still not entirely sure about how to actually get started, so to say. Yeah I've read the guide quite a few times in quite a few different places, but I'm still a little confused. I'm not sure what exactly "step one" would be or what I exactly need to do at the very start.
I figured out what "nightly" is and everything like that lol. I'm still thinking I'm going to follow verygreen's guide, but I keep seeing people saying that they keep adding nightlys to the SD Card/CM7. Is that something that's a need-to-do or once you've finished verygreen's guide, you can be done with it?
And my last REALLY stupid question would have to be.... what does the "u" stand for in uSD? hahaha I've tried really hard to figure it out but I can't find it out anywhere.
Thanks!!
Edit: Thought of a question I'm really confused about... When I first start, do I need to format the card in my NC first? Like before I put the SD Card into my computer and start on anything, is step one, put the (new-right-out-of-the-box-never-been-used-before) SD Card into my NC and format it and then I can begin the process? Or can I just skip that and go right into writing the image onto the card?
One: a bigger SD card is better. The NC doesn't have too much memory as is, so having an SD card allows you to store a lot more on it.
Also, no you don't need to keep doing nightlies. I just used the stable ROM and that's the last I've done with it.
I just got my new NC and found it is 1.3 version. There are few threads to introduce [how to] for 1.3.
I plan to repartition first and than use CM7 rom. Can anyone help to advise if there is difference to do with 1.3 compare those step by step guides for 1.2 version?

I followed [ROM][CM7] [v1.3] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards on my new NC on 1.3 and there isn't any difference from 1.2.
Following that guide I did everything it said but used 7.0.3 stable version instead of nightlies since this was my first time doing it. I'm really happy with everything and I eventually might just upgrade to the nightlies soon or use a different SD card to try it out.
I did have a problem where my app drawer was scrolling REALLY slow and sometimes like freezing up. It drove me absolutely crazyyy and I couldn't find any answers to fix it. I used TB and restored a few things from before it started happening and it still made no difference. I finally changed my wallpaper from a Live WP (Galaxy) to just a standard one from CM wall papers. What would you know, it fixed my slow scrolling/freezing problem and I was kicking myself for backing **** up when I didn't have to, and resetting up my desktop after I already had it set up how I liked it.
Another problem I ran into when I was first installing was that Win32DiskImager it kept saying my brand new SD card didn't have enough space, but I then tried using WinImage and that worked perfectly.
I've read sooooooo many threads for hours upon hours straight but I still can't find an answer to my realllyyyyy stupid question of what the "u" stands for in uSD hahaha So if anyone would be kind enough to tell me I'd greatly appreciate it as it's driving me crazy not knowing what the damn "u" stands for lol.
I will try to assist on a few questions. First the "u" in Usd stands for micro (thank the greeks for the strange lettering). As for rooting, let me clairify some of the terminology here.
Rooting does not change the stock operating system. It mearly gives you access to the core system settings allowing you to make changes to the system other than those allowed by the device manufacturer.
As for sd card size, most folks find either an 8 or 16 gb sd card to be sufficient. The comment made about the nooks storage is a bit misleading. For folks coming from a windoz environment, 8gb may seem to be very little storage space. I run my nook with the internal emmc memory partitioned to 5gb user, 2gb nook storage. The other gig is used for the OS and is not available. I have an 8gb class 4 sandisk sd. That being said, I run 153 apps and have aproximately 53% free storage. YMMV.
Sadly, I cannot offer any better sd card instillation instructions as I run cm7 from internal memory and have never had a need for the stock B&N software.
The debate about stable ROMs vs. Nightly builds is an ongoing one. The "stable" rom for cm7 is 7.0.3. I prefer to run 7.1 release candadate 1. Rc1 for short there have been many improvements in speed and stability with rc1 including support for usb access. The nightly builds add newer improvements and bug fixes. This is cutting edge stuff and can be left for later experimentation. 7.1 is extremly stable and should be your best start for a rom.
Installing a custom rom differs from rooting in that the custom rom is already rooted and gives you complete access to the system from the start. That being said, with great power comes great responsibility. You can really mess the system up if you play with settings before you understand the results.

Thanks for your reply, I am reading this thread for more infromation than try to do it.
For uSD, like the above mentioned, the 'u' = 'μ', meaning micro, so the uSD is microSD or TF.
Been running nightly 176, close to the latest, on uSD card with no problems since it was first posted. My take after trying about a dozen in all is that the nightlies are generally more stable the later they are listed. TWIW.
