Greetings!
Totally newbie here. Trying to sort what kind of phone I have. I've been told on other forums that I have a Himalaya or an XDA II. Needless to say, I don't mind whichever PPC I have but I really need your expertise on this issue.
Having some problems with my O2 XDA IIi trying to use Activesync with my laptop and desktop through USB. I got it traded with my other phone. Anyway, I connected my XDA with both my desktop and laptop but it doesn't recognize it. Its saying "Unknown Device" and Window XP cannot find a driver for it or something like that. Although, it has an icon of a "Mobile Device" both on my PC but I can't explore it. Anyway here are the steps I have taken so far. Even though there's no Activsync installed, PC would still say Unknown Device.
Steps Taken:
- Already did try different USB ports from both Laptop and Desktop all running on USB 2.0 several times - no good;
- Uninstalled and reinstalled Activsync 4.5 and 4.1 and hard reset XDA several times - no good;
- I borrowed my fiancee's O2 XDA IIi and used her cradle and it worked with both my Laptop and Desktop;
- Used my cradle with her O2 XDA IIi and it worked as well on both pc;
- Now that I have isolated the issues from desktop, laptop and cable; I know its my XDA;
Here are some info about my O2 XDA IIi:
- ROM Version: 2.06.00WWE
- ROM Date: 06/14/04
- Radio Version: 1.18.00
- Protocol Version: 1337.38
- ExtROM Version: Xda2JoJo.v3.2zS
I know Alpine's are good Pocket PC and I just need to know how to troubleshoot it. It can be my powerful device to date if I just can sync it with my PC in order to have those unwanted programs from the ExtROM. I got the procedures to Flash the ROM and everything from this site and I know you guys are the best people to help me with this issue. It has something to do with my XDA. Its working fine but I just need to sync it with my PC in order for me to sync information between them. It maybe just a file or a driver for it to work. Tried several sites but no info about my issue.
I hope I have given you all the info you need. Please I'm desperate to ask for any assistance from you guys. All your efforts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
i have the same problem, but mine is XDA II not i, bought second hand.

- ROM Date: 06/14/04
- Radio Version: 1.18.00

still searching for solution, i only have an idea for my xda ii to flash it with sd flash technique, but i have no friends having xda ii to copy the rom into sd. googling having the same result, there is no rom out there for sd flash.

Maybe worth a try??
HI Guys,
My first post on here. Been watching on the sidelines for years though.
I had the same problem with my XDA2i, for about a year. Had to resort to Nokia N80...(Pile of CR*p).
ANyway, after completely giving up on the XDA i decided to operate. I bought me a cheap set of TORX screwdrivers of ebay and opened her up. I was puzzled as she would charge via USB but not get detected, or on occation get detected as unknown device as you described. I convinced myself that some of the pins must of been damaged. When i opened her up and inspected the pins some of them appeared corroded (or just very dirty) on the back where they join the PCB. I gave them a tickle and tidy and hey presto, she's back up and running again.
Give it a try, you got nothing to loose if you cant sync.

Sync problem
Hi
Just bought an old one of the IIi and had the same problem. In my case theres a fault in the cradle. Bought a cradle online (used and cheap) and
it works fine
Hi, first post in here... I got same problem about device not recognized with cradle... I bought O2 xda II second... If there any solution?
Qtek (Vodaphone version of the XDA) running pocket pc 4.2
Hello there I have been reading the posts and i have ot be honest I'm a little lost as I just like to plug and go, sorry for being a ludite.
I have an Orange M1500 but the connection broke so i couldn't charge or sync anything. So I thought I would but a new PDA similar, not realising exactly the nightmare outthere, anyway I thought I was getting a simi;ar machine in the Qtek, however my M1500 runs 2003se, and the QTEk runs the pocket pc 4.2.
just to make life interesting I am now on vista, which i hate, but am stuck with.
Please can somebody help me on trying to sync the systems as nothing I have tried so far seems to work and when it comes to the technical speak i get lost, again sorry for being dense.
Here is hoping for some magic.
Many thanks

hi
i have the O2 xda mini S
and it seems to have a mind of it's own, as it won't connect to MSN messenger when i want it to, some times it does, sometimes it doesn't,
the message i get is "temporary conditions currently prevent connecting to the pocket MSN service"
which i've heard is a common problem with these factory fresh XDA Mins S'.
i've downloaded the firmware from the o2 website and flashed the unit, and at 1st it seemed ok, but a few days later the problem came back, and now it's not having any of it.
i've phoned O2 up about this problem, and they seem to be as much help as a wet paper bag! i've gone through all the gprs settings with them.
They say, seen as i can conenct to the interent through GPRS via internet explorer then the unit it's self is funtioning fine, even though messenger doesn't, so they told me to contact Microsoft, yeah right!
has any one got any ideas or fixs that would cure this predicument of mine?
i would be most greatful.
i'm on

can you help me?
well i did not know that it is rude to write in caps.
well please advise if you could help me out with the problem
From what I understand you device is known here as blue angel.
From the description of your problem it does sound that you may have a bad piece of software on it. The question is what did you install.
Firs off, putting in a memory card will not help you open files of 20 - 30MB. The card only expands storage memory, not RAM. Basically it is like a hard drive.
I can only recommend the following:
Back up your data (contacts, tasks, emails, documents etc.) then hard reset your device. This will restore it to its original state. (Sorry, but I don't know how to hard reset this particular phone - try the blue angel forum).
If your device still doesn't work well you may have a hardware problem. Otherwise, try installing all the programs one by one using the device in between to see just which program causes it to slow down and hang.
hi,
thanks for your information but i did tried everything.
i have tried hard resetting and did not put anything new.even removed my storage card and then tried but still same problem. i have even upgraded to 1.42 netherland but it did not even get solved.
i have tried everything in the software issue but it is not working.
kindly do advise what has to be done?
It can be a software you install on you pda. Are you having this trouble even if you do not install anything extra to your pda? After a hard reset try to use it without installing any other application a couple of days.
Did it spend any time in a moist environment? Or get water damage? Physical damage? (i.e. drop, crush, constant vibration.) The only thing that would make me satisfied is if I took the whole thing apart, disconnected and recconected all ribbon cables/connectors.
Thank you for your information.
well i have even tried to upgrade to 1.42 and radio 1.13 and removed everything but still the same problem.
i have not installed a single thing but still it is the same problem.
i am tired of this pda and i do not know what to do
please help

Phones resets without warning. This happens under various conditions. I have not been able to pin point any specific condition when this happens.
Your help will be most appreciated.
not trying to be funny but honestly.......if you cant even pinpoint when your phone resets.......how do u expect us to help, we're not psychic you know.
maybe a little more info would help, like what programs u have installed, what programs are running when it happens etc.
The phone just reset, twice, now while I'm typing.
Phone is connected to notebook using USB.
ActiveSync and Internet Sharing are running.
Connected to the internet accessing this forum.
Uninstall any applications that you've installed.
If that fails, hard reset. (Find out how on the wiki)
edit: If you've recently flashed a ROM and/or radio, flash back the original ROM & radio.
If that still fails, contact HTC or your carrier's tech support for repairs.
Hope this helps!
edit2: In the condition you're in, it's going to be very hard to troubleshoot your phone, even if you gave us all the info you had.
edit3: Disconnect your phone from USB, this could also be accelerating the resets, especially if you have a faulty cable or faulty usb connector on the phone.
Try contacting me via MSN/Live IM @ ([email protected]). We can check for bad blocks.
I got my XDA IIi from a friend who decided to help out a old git with huge mitt's (hands for the none British) its been great for me and he said he thought he knew where he had put the 2003SE disk for it / the original disk which came with it. (I got everything else hand book cradle etc etc)
Guess what three months later he cannot find it!!
Can anyone let me have access to get it from them or I am willing to supply a snail mail addy for you to post it if there is no other way.
not having owned an alipine myself i cant say if it's normal
but non of my pda's have com with a disk with the os on
the os was on the phone and the disc it came with just
had activesync and a few extre programs on it and a version
of outlook
what is it you are seeking ?
if it's just an offical rom one can find those online
I was hoping to have a backup of the OS i.e. 2003SE its about the only OS I haven't seen about

the deathnoise update is the latest 2003se Os, you dont need any backup disjs as you can get activesync from microsofts website this is the program to sync and put programs on your xda2i
I have the CDs that came with my Alpine and there is no OS on any of them, just 2 Cds with applications of various flavours. i downloaded the latest ROM from O2 and flashed that, not yet been brave enough with one of the ones from here, mainly because its not technically my Alpine, it belongs to work although no-one really wants it.
Hi
I havent performed any upgrades to my XDA2i (official or otherwise) for at least 3 years - are there any upgrades I should consider?
Here is my Device Info
ROM Version : 1.11.00 WWE
ROM Date : 01/27/05
Radio Version : 1.00.00
Protocol Version : 1337.39
ExtROM Version : [THIS IS BLANK]
Model Number : PH10C
Also, I am unable to connect to WiFi with my XDAIIi
The device finds wifi signals and sometimes will make a connection - but when I try and open a webpage I get a screen showing "IIS7" and nothing else.
Here are my settings for WiFi :
Network Card Connects to tiacxwin Campatible Wireless Ethernet (for both The Internet and Work).
Power Save slider is set for Best Performance.
Thanks for any help and advice !!!
Paul
I am in a similar position Paul.
I have been given a 02 XDAll by my company to use for recording surveys.
Its bog standard like yours.
I'd really like to upgrade it but the problem is there is almost too much written about it on these forums .Most of it is so old and out of date that all the links are broken. Its hard work trawling through it.
What is needed is a simple basic upgrading overview listing all the options but I suppose everyone has moved on to more recent PDA's and are no longer interested in these
I've posted a similar request in the Himilayer section .Maybe we can share what we find
Nick
Nick, do you have a Himalaya or an Alpine? PH10B or PH10C?
The Alpine is stuck on WM2003, perfectly good for its task just not upgradeable to WM5 or WM6.
As for customising it realy depends what you are looking for.
Hi DeeDee thank you for responding. I feel guilty hyjacking Paul's thread.
Mine is a Himalaya 10B
with following spec
02 XDAll
2Gb SD card
Rom 1.72.00WWE
Date03/15/04
Radio 1.17.04
ext Rom 1.72.18.1
Ram 128Mb
Model PH10B
I just wanted to improve the Active page if its possible .I cannot read the tiny text so large button icons like the Diamond would be useful
I cannot set the Internet access up either ? have tried for hours.
I have a Netgear Wireless Modem router DG834G but neither the manual or quick guide explain how to set up the XDA .
I have spent several days trawling this site and the net.
Any help appreciated thank you
Nick,
No problem joining in - if we can get the WiFi problem sorted I would be more than happy.
DeeDee,
Should my ExtROM Version be completely blank?
Thanks
Paul
Hi Paul
you're up early !
I have used WM5 on an XDA Mini S (Wizard) a couple of years ago. I imagine that most of the current software and apps are written for WM5 orWM6 so it will mean I'll need to upgrade to WM6. Presume that means flashing the Rom which judging by the number of disasters on this forum is not something I'd do lightly.
Particularly as there are virtually no answers to requests for help.
I found a statement last night that basically says unless you are a software developer you arn't welcome on this forum which probably explains the lack of help.
Yours has the 128 Rom as apposed to my 64Mb which is a big advantage. I have gone off the idea of buying a Himalaya or an Alpine as they are too antiquated really which is a shame as I love the build quality and screen size.
I'm going to look for something a bit more contemporary I think . In the mean time I'll enjoy using the works XDA ll
Hi
Flashing the Himalaya to WM5 or WM6 is painless and it has to be said slightly addictive, you will try many ROMs until you find one you like. Think I have tried most of the ROMs for the Himalaya.
The lack of help has NOTHING to do with not being a developer, i'm not one and have had lots of help. The problem is probably due to the lack of people using these PPCs. i have to confess my Himalaya is purely there as something to muck about with, work didn't want it any more. i have a Trinity as primary PPC phone and an Alpine with an application that doesn't work on WM5.
You won't get your Himalaya to connect to your WiFi as it doesn't do WiFi without an add on card.
DeeDee,
Should my (Alpine) ExtROM Version be completely blank?
Thanks
Paul
Hi Paul
Can't remember and my Alpine is at home, but i don't think so.

Thankyou DeeDee I appreciate you taking the trouble to answer silly questions by a noob.
I have downloaded and printed out a 140 page manual and there was nothing clear about connecting to wi-fi
If I have to carry this Hima around with me all day I might as well have it working as well as it can.I had intended to purchase a 3g Iphone for myself but now I'm not so sure I might buy a HTC instead if I can find one with 3.5" screen and wi-fi and a reasonable interface like touchflo
Nick
i have to say the smaller screen on my Trinity is perfectly adequate and that the larger form factor of the Alpine/Himalaya means you need a headset/handsfree kit to really use it as a phone.
It's also not pocketable, which my Trinity is, just.
If you can find a decent mobile shop and have a touchy feely sesion with as many as you can.
thanks DeeDee thats excellent advice. Photos never give a good indication of size and ease of use . The size is a bind like you say its heavy and too big for a shirt pocket but it is easier for me to work with using reading glasses.
I got an 02 XDA mini S when they first came out. I found the screen too small and fiddly and it stayed in the box unused for 18 months when I sold it on ebay for nothing so I have learnt my lesson.
DeeDee may I just ask one other question please. I have trawled through the wiki and various other sources but I still haven'y founf an answer to my initial question on the Himalaya board.
Q1 How do you install a new app on the Hima or Alpine ?
Q2. where does it get installed to ?
Today we lost the special survey App again Grrrrrrrrrrrv because the flippin battery went flat.
My boss is hopping mad and blames me !....I blame IT cos they installed it.
There must be somewhere we can install an App to that is non volatile and is not lost every time the battery goes flat.
Presumably the same place that WM2003 is installed ? How is it done ?
To install an app either:
1 - use Active Sync to install it if necessary
2 - if the install is a CAB file copy it to a memory card and then click it on the PPC to run the install.
As for the where it installs, when you run the installer it may ask where you wish to install, either Device/Storage Card. Make sure both batteries are charging. In all honesty it's not your fault that the end users aren't charging their Alpine on a regular basis.
