I have recently reinstalled windows on my computer, and have upgraded to Activesync 4.5 as the other versions are no longer available. When I sync my pda with activesync, I put it in its controller and it syncs email etc... fine.
Then I do something on my desktop and leave it there - I work at home so I want it constantly syncing with my outlook
About 5 minutes after sync, it disconnects, and I have to take it out of its cradle and put it back in again - very annoying!
I am not sure if I have missed some "turn off if inactive for" setting, but I cant work this one out...

same problem with me
I also encounter the same problem after I migrate my BA to WM6, any help guys ? thanks++++
same problem
anyone have any ideas?
I've got a similar problem with my hermes.
Funny, my old angel doesn't have this problem tho.
Anyway, try turning off the 'advanced network functionality' and see if that makes it any more stable.
Settings -> Connections -> USB to PC
Other 'fixes' I've seen mentioned are:
Soft reset the phone
Uninstall, reboot, reinstall ActiveSync
Delete the association between the phone and computer, reestablish
IMO, activesync is a nasty hack that needs to be dragged out back and shot. Start with a clean code base, or make it a strictly backup solution with plugins for extra things, like syncing with outlook. That's how Palm does it, and I never had an issue with my old Palm Pilot not syncing.
Problem solved
turning off the 'advanced network functionality' in Settings-connections-USB to PC solved my Activesync 4.5 - Connection keeps turning off problem.
Thanks to jdc

Turn off your antivirus or other security programs . it helped me to connect . I turned off eset smart security on my pc and my BA became connected .

That's another possibility.
when the 'advanced network functionality' thing is enabled, it enabled the RNDIS part, which makes the phone part of a private network that exists between the phone and the activesync program. Any communication to the phone is then done over a 'network bridge' of sorts. If a firewall or other network security program is running and has not been told to allow that traffic, it will block it and the whole thing will not work.
For the record, I downloaded activesync again and did the 'uninstall, reinstall, doo-da, doo-da' dance. After it reapplied some USB hotfixes that I don't recall from the first time I installed it, my RNDIS dropping issues have gone away.
Of course, it would by nice if microsoft would post the version and build number so we know if there has been an update to it...
EDIT: ...and it looks like I spoke too soon. Sometimes the enhanced network function stuff doesn't kill the connection, other times it does. Bluetooth and USB-serial connections are solid. I'm about ready to trash this hack program and find a 3rd party sync application. This is getting st00pid IMO... Grrr...
I have been using recently the Kaiser but having two major issues which I can't solve however I've been using windows devices for 4 years now.
1. The activesync just stopped working via usb. No computer recognizes the device, and can't get it to work via usb however it charges the phone. I have tried with several PCs and cables, without result. The strange thing is that I have used the activesync via usb for months but it suddenly stopped working... In the activesync the schedule menu is always unavailable no matter it is connected (via bluetooth) to the pc or not.
2. When I bought the gadget I've disabled the directpush feature somehow and now I can't get it to work. I used my gmail account with direct push but felt no use for it but now I would be glad to have the push feature on. The push button is always unavailable in the comm manager and I can't remember what have been disabled to stop the push working.
Please help, am really going out of my mind having these issues and being unable to resolve them.
THX
I had a similar problem just yesterday. I was about to do a hard reset. Instead, I used did a RESTORE from my latest Sprite backup (not connected to PC). I also uninstalled ActiveSync 4.5 from my PC then reinstalled it. My laptop rediscovered the Tilt. I had to set up a new realationship but it worked.
In my case I have a private email pushed and my Exchange Server email pushed. My Exchange Server email was not getting pushed. At first ActiveSync on my Tilt was in a continuous sync mode, then it failed and wouldn't open (on the Tilt). Then I couldn't get the Direct Push icon active in CommMgr. After the RESTORE, coupled with the ActiveSync reinstall, everything works fine.
I was really upset to have to figure all this out, and all the syncing took time, but it is working. I hope this helps.
Thanx, but unfortunately I have made a hard reset so the sprite backup is gone plus I work a lot on the device and a backup would ruin quite a few important notes...
Also tried the activesync uninstall-reinstall but nothing happend. I think the activesync problem is somehow connected to the missing schedule option on the device...
Any other suggestions?
THX
Got a solution
I also had this problem. Thankfully, I solved it by going to Start>System>Usb to PC and unchecking the box "Enable advanced network functionality" Unfortunately, I dont use Direct Push so I dont know how to help you there.

Try installing the rapi drivers...there should be a cab file of that floating around on these forums. The other possibility is you should consider re-installing the USB drivers for PPC/smartphone on your PC. I forget exactly where I got these from but do a search under the "Networking" thread and you may find something there. Final check is does the physical USB port on your PC work for any other USB device? Maybe it's been physically damaged...
THX, I'll try messing with the drivers. However the USB port is fully functional and it charges the phone. I have tried to plug it to other computers, with other cables but the result is always the same: charging but no data connection.
Direct Push is an Exchange thing. I don't think GMail has that feature, only POP and IMAP.
If you set up a new email account on the device and configure it as an Exchange account, I believe the Direct Push icon in the comm manager will be active.

as it fails on any and all computers I think it is not the pc but the kaiser which is wrong...
Hi all,
I am on Dutty's apr-29 rom and here is my issue..
My kaiser is connected to my work pc with activesync installed and i am unable to use internet on my device... I can update htc weather with no worries but the pie and skyfire doesn't work... the strange thing is that netfront browser works just fine so iam not sure if its a proxy issue or not???
I would like to use skyfire if possible so pls let me know what can i do to make it work.
Thanks alot
First thing I'd try is to reboot the computer AND soft reset the phone. If that doesnt work, try disabling advanced network... under connections usb to pc.
ps- in the future, its recommended NOT to start a new thread for something like this, but post it in the rom's thread (duttys in your case)
hi, i have the same problem...but I still using the standard ATT rom...

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply, I tried what you suggested but still no luck..
I honestly don't know...the fact that you are able to update the weather but not others has me stumped. Has it always behaved this way? Can you do a complete system backup using sprite and hard resest, before you restore, connect it to activesync (you do not need to configure it to sync with your device, iow just cancel the first screen) and see if you can use pie or check your email. If you can then there must be a problem with your settings somewhere, but if you cant then just use sprite for a full system restore and you should be back to where you were and maybe someone else can help.
For what its worth when I first got my tilt it would not use the internet no matter which way I tried (ota or activesync). Then it magically just started working.
hello once again,
Ok so here is the thing... i played around with it a bit more and was able to get pie to work.. but everything else still doesn't work (windows live, skyfire, etc..)
I went to connections>>advanced>>select network>> on this screen i selected "My ISP" for the top menu and "My Work Network" for the bottom menu... By making this change pie is now working but still no luck with skyfire..
Note: i do not have a data plan so MY ISP menu is empty, i usually use skyfire with wifi or when connected to my laptop at home
PS: I didn't do a hard reset because i dont think it has anything to do with rom upgrade...i have flashed my device like 47 times in last 2 months and have had the same issue with every rom i've tried including the original htc rom. Everything works jsut fine when when my device is connected to my laptop at home using activesync.
I think you would still have the problem after a hard reset. Mine has the problem now on the standard Tilt ROM. The wierd part is it didnt when I first set it up and was running the internet through cerdisp. I guess I need to look into it too, but I havent been going crazy trying to find it.
What version of activesync are you using?
Iam using Activesync 4.5..
Have you tried disabling your windows firewall?
Dumb Question
If the phone is connected to your work PC, why would you use the browser on the phone and not the work computer?
If you are worried about what the boss might see - here's the problem with that - can't they just monitor the server traffic anyway, whether you use the phone or the computer, since you would be using the work's server?
What i do at work - first make sure there are no keyboard loggers - second use the internet on the phone and disable the ethernet on the computer.
I remember an option somewhere in the syncing process about allowing income data connections - I dont know exactly what it does, but i will try to find it and post something
EDIT - it was an option to allow wireless incoming data to phone while connected to activesync.
If your talking about tethering, then you're doing it wrong.
Make sure your Activesync isn't connecting to your phone in the first place. Turn off the "USB" connect in the settings for Activesync.
THen go on your phone and open up the "windows" and look for a file called "intshr" or something like that. Open it up and then hit connect.
You don't need to change any settings for the Media Net if you're using the AT&T rom.

Well the only reason i wanna use my device and not the work pc is beacuse all the major sites like hotmail, youtube, facebook are blocked but they all work on my device using "only" netfront browser..

Hi All,
I have a strange problem with my Tilt. Whenever I connect my Tilt to my PC using USB cable, it gets disconnected regularly. I have to unplug and replug the USB cable to get the ActiveSync working.
I am using windows 6.1 ATT official ROM. I tried multiple cables and multiple PCs and same issue is there.
Does anyone having any clue or similar problem and solution for this.
Thanks in advance

Check the pings in the mini usb port to make sure they aren't bent.
It's possible that you have a program causing it, use a task manager to turn them off if you can.
I already checks all the strips(pings) in the mini usb....and mini usb cable also....
How do I identify if some program is causing it?
I have the following program running on my tilt
MobileShell.exe
device.exe
filesys.exe
voicecmd.exe
gwes.exe
cprog.exe
s2u2.exe
shell32.exe
services.exe
quickGPS.exe
repllog.exe
connmgr.exe
taskMge.exe
iLock2.exe
HTCIMSSvc.exe
AutoUpdate.exe
poutlook.exe
NK.exe
use task manager to turn them off one by one or in groups.

In the early days of my owning a TyTN II (HTC not AT&T Branded), I had this issue occuring often with my old PCs (via chipset USB 1.1 motherboards). Since updating the USB capability by addidng a decent NEC chipset based USB 2.0 PCI card, the connectivity problems vanished. Now I'm using an Intel DG45ID with USB 2.0 built in, the problem has never re-occurred. What are the ages / chipsets of these 'multiple PCs'? Have you tried connecting the Tilt to a newish PC?
I have a laptop not older than 2 years and it has intel 945 based chipset (which definetly support USB 2.0) and another PC on which I have tried also has 945 based chipset.
I think you are right, the issue is the USB ports. one of them showing an error when I pluging anything into this and I think other are not working properly too in my laptop but they are not showing an error.
However I tried different (other than I used) USB port in my Desktop and I do not see the issue.
Thanks for your help. We got the root cause but I dont know how to fix it in my laptop maybe usb port got the dust on it.

Those Intel 945 chipsets should definitely be able to cope with the USB demand alright. In time after installing lots of different USB devices through a given USB port, remnants of past driver associations etc can remain and it's often a good idea every now and again to perform a 'from the ground up' format and reinstal. If you have a recovery CDROM from the Laptop manufacturer (preumably this is what you're using as your main PC), then this will simplify things tremendously. Just make sure you back up all your important data before you commence the recovery operation.
I dont want to restart every thing I have lots of software and thing which will take ample of my time.
I am using Vista home premium, is there any way to clean up the driver related stuff.

I do understand as I've worked in IT in the past. You may find however that a restore/reinstall from scratch is the quickest way rather than going through looking for remnanats of files and unused registry entries to clear out. Its always a good idea to format your PCs HDD every so often anyway and usually the performance boost that comes with an efficient 'how it was meant to be' setup, helps to compensate for the time and effort it takes.

You could try using system recovery (I presume thats in Vista Home Premium, I don't have Vista myself), but I don't have much faith in such inbuilt recovery options. It'd also mean you need to know when to recover back to - the $64,000 question. You could also try uninstalling all the USB related things in device manager (with all USB devices unplugged at the time of course) and on restarting, the PC should pick them all up again (have your driver CDROMs on hand in case it doesn't). Personally, I'd just back up my data, get my software installation CDROMs ready and perform a full laptop system recovery using the manufacturers CDROM.

That should be the very last bit of advise to give out, and really I think thats very very bad advice.. Ah infact he claims that it happens on more then one computer, so it's a problem with the phone. I'm sure the "remnants" of drivers don't stay in the cable..
I tried multiple cables and multiple PCs and same issue is there.

No I haven't, however I too feel that it is the problem of the USB port or cable. I again tried on my desktop (with XP) on different ports (on board earliar I was trying with the front side USB ports) and seems to be fine, not showing and disconnecting issue. I do not know why there is a difference in usb ports.
My laptop with Vista still having an issue. One of the port even showing an error when I try to connect it.
It seems that the safe bet when syncing is to use XP.. I know that with notebooks the USB ports can be flakey because of power issues but that shouldn't be a big deal with a desktop.. Try your XP desktop and hopefully you'll have some good luck.
I'd like to say I've had this problem before, but I don't remember what I did to fix it.
I agree - well, with one point anyway

That's a good idea to try as well, a combination of both will almost certainly fix things. I guess my personal experience with this and the cause having been USB port related on the PCs (both with older VIA chipsets) led me in the direction of the PCs USB ports and everything surrounding them. You hit the nail on the head with with your comments about power issues on ports. I remember that one of the things which tended to bring on a disconnect in my last VIA chipset board was starting the TV Tuner up - the extra power consumed by the tuner put the rest of the chipset into a position where it simply couldn't cope with what Activesync was asking of it and the problem was 100% repeatable. I also found with that setup that I needed to disable Advanced Networking functionality on the phone or it wouldn't connect at all - although that didn't cause unreliable connections, it simply wouldn't connect with Advanced Networking Capability enabled. The newer USB port adapter card resolved all of these issues.
If [email protected] has lots of software installed on the PC, there may be lots on the phone as well so if thats the case, it'll mean a little work reinstalling cabs and reconfiguring there as well but I'm all for occasional cleanouts for restoring reliability and performance - the difference is often like night and day. Thanks for the additional positive idea among all the negatives.
Not able to connect to internet with Active sync
I don't know what is happening......now I am facing new issue.
I am able to connect to internet by Active sync on my vista laptop but its not working on XP desktop.
I have default connections in connection setting and I manually added for my ISP(Airtel).
I already tried deleting and resetting the sync settings, tried different setting on XP(Active Sync) but no use. Its working fine with Vista (WMDC).
Any help would be gratful.
Thanks.

I'm not sure what you want to connect to the internet - is it so you can have your Kaiser use your desktop PCs internet connection (what I suspect is the case) or the other way around (in which case internet connection sharing would come into play)?

If the problem is the former above, try changing the 'Automatic' in the Desktop Activesync 'This computer is connected to' section to 'The internet'. I had a WM 6.1 HTC ROM on my Kaiser for a while and this was the only way I could get it to connect (the WM 6.0 ROM works fine in this regard under Automatic). Not sure what you mean by manually added Airtel though. If thats also your landline ISP, I've never experienced a need to configure down to the level of specifying the ISPs name. The only ISP where names come into it in my experience is the one the phone is connected to over the air as the network of choice (Airtel going by your profile) and that should be fully set up using the HTC Configuration Wizard built into HTC TyTN II ROMs automatically a short while after it connects to the network for the first time (or after a hard reset). Is this not happening for you?

nope - no backup tool. have restored the partnership on the PC but not sure how to do this on WM 6.5
I actually mentioned removing partnership, not restoring it.
So if you want to remove partnership on WM , you should start ActiveSync
and go to Menu->Options.
You should see your partnerships there.
You can select the partnership, and delete it. You have a button for that.
Good Luck.
I have had problems with ActivSync and Windows Mobile Device Center with the last several versions of 6.5. You have to play with it to get it to work. Sync has been very unreliable. Just when I think I have it working, I have to delete the partnerships and start over.
I have been hoping somebody would find a solution to this problem. I have missed some meetings, because I can not sync and have no reminder. I use thephone for work and need sync to work. I have given up on 6.5 for now and went back to 6.1. No problems with sync since I went back to 6.1.
hmmm. i have a sneaky feeling it thinks its already set to sync to another machine. is there something on the raphael, some wm 6.5 setting, that tells it which PC it syncs with > maybe a registry value i can blank out or reset ?
