Spontaneous Connection - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Having decided last weekend that my Kaiser was way too fast, I loaded it up with bloatware.TouchFlo,HTC Cube,6 Tab Home Plugin,New HTC Default Theme,Audio Manager, Home Customizer,Comm Manager and Kaiser Tweaks. Most of it I loaded as .cabs or .zip thru Missing Sync for Mac. I also downloaded Windows Live Services and set up push email for my @live account. Everything works great except the phone now spontaneously connect to MediaNet (Edge) all day for no reason. The connection is not followed by email or anything else, it just connects. When I check Task Manager 95% of the time Activesync is running but not always. Have set Activesync from " as they arrive" to manual. The phone still connects for no reason. The notification that the phone is connecting comes up , I press cancel, right away it tries to connect again and again and again, then stops and five minutes later it will connect again. I know this is long but I know how you all like enough info.Any thoughts on causes or solutions?

The phone is doing what AT&T (or your phone service) told it to do - constantly make sure that you have a connection to them. This will drain your battery somewhat. What you want is that it should DROP all connections unless you TELL it to connect.
I think that you want to search for Kaiser Tweak -(oh wait! you already have that program) you will notice that you can make the phone connect only when you have told it to - i.e. make an internaet connection or check email. You can have the phone drop the connection one minute after that.
Have you actually used the Kaiser Tweak program? If not you should use it first/next.
I believe that this will most likely solve your problem if I have understood it correctly.
(PS - I recommend that you use the SEARCH at the top of the forum before posting next time.)

Thanks Bill...... Already went thru Kaiser Tweaks and set every single setting to advised setting. Set all the connection settings to connect manually and to drop the connection after one minute. It wil not do either.Google is my friend. I have google searched this forum and have used forum search. In the past two days Mon. and Tues. I have read thru more than 2000 posts and wikis before I decided to start a new thread if I have missed something I am Sorry and would have appreciated a link to this information that I have missed. I have had the phone since last Nov. and have been pretty faithful in reading this and the HTC wiki and forum and cannot figure this out.
Sorry again, Denco

ActiveSync hangs on Orange TyTN II

Subject says it all.
AS works (usually) for a while after reset, but then it just hangs saying "Synchronising" but gets nowhere.
Sometimes killing and restarting AS works, but usually I have to reset the damn thing.
Anyone else having this problem/found a solution? Not sure I'll get any sense from Orange (in fact, I am sure I'll get sod-all sense from them!)
Ferg.
P.S. Got HTC Home, iMate WMP Today, Live Search, Voice Command and many other apps installed. Perhaps it doesn't like Home or so.
More likely its a connection thing.
Try disabling advanced functionality in Start, settings, connections, USB-to-PC
That will make it try a USB connection instead of an IP based one.
Sorry, I should have said I was referring to AS on the device itself - it's Direct Push that's mucked up.
I meant on the device... but that was based on AS with pc
However, if you have an exchange server in the mix, then I would guess it either is losing the connection to the server. What happens if you leave it until it errors? (ie what error code)
Can you sync with the server OK when you do connect with USB to an internet enabled pc?
Well, the funny thing is it doesn't give me an error (or I've not waited the hours required for it to time-out).
The TyTN I have works a lot better under the same circumstances (same Exch, same account, sam SIM card etc, so it would deffo point towards the TyTN II itself.
The only thing left to do, I supose, is to ramp up the Exch logging and see what that says, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope of that.
Thanks for your assistance, unwired.
F.
Ok so its definitely the device...
Do you have signal issues on 3g where you are? Is your network allowing simultaneous voice and data? Have you installed the server certificate OK on your device?
Yeah, all the Exchange stuff is configured correctly - that's my job after all.
No 3G issues (since I use the TyTN from the same place.
Although I did notice recently that I can't actually have adata connection and a call at the same time (with 3G coverage). I guess I should be able to...
F.
sorry to bring up an old post,
having same sort of problem, but only when trying to get attachments. seems to take forever, (5-10 mins stuck on syncing then looks like it gives up) but the attachment is then there, which is crazy as its a 30k word doc which should take seconds.
did you work out any kind of solution?
edit: this is on a clients kaiser

Data Connection Button

Hi,
I sent back my first orange TYTN II because their GPRS internet kept connecting everytime I turned on the phone and also every so often for no reason (little connecting icon at the top of the screen kept coming on and the timer started to count). The lady on the phone told me it is meant to do that on PDA phones to speed up accessing the internet explorer and using the internet, after a week of phone calls lol but i'm not sure about this as a guy in an orange shop told me their's doesnt do that. I ordered mine online. Also if this was the case I wouldn't know how long I would be using their GPRS for? lol. Maybe its only an orange thing. I don't know this is my first PDA phone. I told them to disable Orange internet completely from my phone which they did but it still tried to connect and failed lol. I couldn't see any application trying to access the internet etc.
I recieved a new TYTN II after a lot of hassle. Everything seems to be working fine. The problem is now the "Data Connection Button" in the Communication manager doesn't come on at all and I am not sure whether it is suppost to or not. I gather this button is meant to turn off all data connections in one go. Does this include WanLan Wifi? as it doesn't come on when i active this. I cant try the orange internet again because i told them to disable it. I am thinking to call them up to re-enable this but i was just wondering if there is any point in doing this and if there is any point in this button apart from closing connections.
Another question I would like to ask is why when I go into my SMS messages and click on one to read does the scrollbar start at the bottom of the page. i have to scroll up to actually read the message which is annoying. Is there a setting for this? ><
Help appreciated thanks. ^_^
I doubt a faulty device was the reason for the GPRS connection. There are several things on the device that have auto update features. Siome of the things that can cause this are: WLM, HTC Home (Weather Page), Quick GPS, etc...
As for the Data Switch in Comm manager, that is only for data, 3G, GPRS, etc... There is a WIFI/WLAN switch in most kaiser models as well.
Unless you close all the way out of the email app, (end program, x-button) it will open where it last was. Selecting a method other than "Recieved" such as "From" or "Subject" can also cause the device to open if different positions.
Thanks for the reply GSLEON3,
I couldn't find any reason for why the GPRS was automatically connecting when I turned on my phone. I didn’t have any weather etc, it was doing it after I hard reset also. I noticed that it did it every time I turned on my phone however if I used my old sim card before they disabled it for the upgrade it started to do it randomly which was odd. Well it doesn’t do it on my new one so I guess I’m happy. Maybe it was the quick GPS ill never know now. I have installed the HTC home interface because I hate all the orange crap they put onto the phone.
“As for the Data Switch in Comm manager, that is only for data, 3G, GPRS, etc...” just to turn off these data connections? Or does this button speed things up or do something else when it is activated? Ah yes how silly of me about the Wifi. I was just wondering why my data connections button wasnt coming on and really i just want some kind of method for testing it apart from GPRS (dont have provider's GPRS activate) and 3G (video calls? do they come out of my minutes?). I'm confused.
When I click the little SMS button which is located more or less in the center of the home screen above the shortcut tabs it goes to the messages page. On this page I have the Inbox filter selected on the top left and the Received filter selected on the top right. At the moment I have 73 SMS messages going down in a list. When I click any of these to read them including newly received items which go to the top of the list I cannot read the actual message until I scroll up using the scrollbar. I have tried to play around with menus etc to see if it holds the position in memory but I have had no luck in making the bar stay at the top.
If I click the top left button and then click Today to go to the home screen the SMS application automatically closes anyway so it wont open where I last was or keep anything in memory. I think this is what you are saying to do. If I open to read any message and then go out to the list of SMS's it wont remember the scrollbar was last at the top when reading the message so keeping the application in memory will have no use as it resets to the bottom as I enter to read any message. I hope this is clear, sorry if it is long-winded.
Many Thanks
Nevermind I have found out why the message bar keeps going to the bottom in the SMS page. Its because of the "D-Pad Scroll Navigation" in the Kaiser Tweak application.
I will just assume that the data connection button is not required and not worry about it i think. Can't find any information about it.
thanks.

problems since ROM upgrade

I have worked in IT support for 8 years at the desktop support level. I dont understand all but can usually figure things out. I apologies in advance for being a rookie. I am frustrated with this device and need help!!
I upgraded ATT tilt to Dutty 6.1 Build 19700.duttys 6.1 about 1 month ago and Since I did this I have had a lot of problems. Build has all the goodies and more but since the upgrade I cant get any work done because I am always tweaking in an attempt to get the device working properly. I have tried to reset and reflash sevral times to start all over again but I end up with the same issues.
1. Unable to sync with active sync. I have disabled avast anti and I still am unable to sync. I also added port 990 to firewall and no good. I have re-installed active Sync 5 times. It only works when I play with it and then the device does not stay connected. It boots the connection 1 or 2 minutes after sync
2. No email apps or programs work. I tried the java versions and all. Messaging says error synchronizing and gives this message - "cannot cannect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings tap settings" My settings are OK as far as I can see. I purposely connect to media net before opening email to make sure the data connection is present. I had full blown HSDPA in NY city yesterday and no email or GPS working.
3. GPS and GPS upgrade is not working. Does GPS use its own radio? Does dutty upgrade break the radio? Not sure what is happening here as well.
4. No you tube video as usual. This has always been broken and remains broken for me. I tried installing flash bundle, codecs, etc.... No good.
I constantly get prompted the below
"cannot cannect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings tap settings"
Only thing that works is web browser.
Can someone please point me to a good solid working and mostly complete ROM for the US att tilt "kaiser". Maybe this is all I need. I have trouble finding ROM info and whether its current via the site. It gets confusing and I just want to set up once and forget, if you know what I mean. Please provide any links I might need to a fix, rom, tweak, etc..
Please help!
Steve
Steve, I updated to Dutty's ROM a while ago and all worked well until about a couple of weeks ago. I do not attribute my problems to the ROM though but rather the Tilt itself. My first issue was related to no activesync connectivity. My Tilt became an "unknown" device. Looking at my USB port from inside of the battery compartment notice bent pins. I was able to straighten the pins out but only could connect with one of about 10 USB cables that I had around. Once you have loaded Dutty's room I would recommend reconfiguring your connectivity to AT&T. You can download a CAB with all of the configuration setting on this board. Recently my touch screen would freeze up and not work well. I thought it might be the ROM but later found out there must have been some physical problem. Two days ago I called ATT and RMA'd my phone. I recieved the new phone yesterday and configured it last night. All is working well (USB and Touchscreen, new ROM, New SPL and new radio).
BTW last night saw (do a google search - I don't remember where I saw it) a revised video / flash version of TCXXXX software. With Dutty's ROM (and current) my GPS worked great. I use it with a couple of test GPS programs and TomTom on Com4. I also have an external BT GPS and it works well with that. Check to make sure your email is not configured for a proxy or local network connection.
Pete
Thanks Pete, Since this post I have gotten the GPS to work. There is a GPS app in programs\tools that has an enable option. I stumbled across it looking for answers. Ill check the pins on my cable as well.
Dutty's connections wizard actually had the wrong info for ATT america. I had to remove ID and password to get it working for Media Net so I hope the cab you reference is a newer one than is on my tilt.
I am still getting the same message for email. "cannot cannect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings tap settings"
I have to be missing something in the connection settings. I will try the cab, maybe it has been updated since Dutty's build.
Can you think of any thing in the connection settings?? Opera works but email gets error and message to check connections.
Ill let you know how that works.
Here are the essential 3 cab files you need for your Tilt.
1) fixes keyboard
-Install, soft reset, done
2) Sets At&t settings
-install, set up email but do not save your password
then do this
start>settings>connections>connections>advanced>select networks>change both drop downs to media net>click edit on both drop downs and go to proxy settings here you will uncheck everything. remember to do it to both dropdowns.
3) removes hidden proxy (which will allow your email to work if you are using a saved password)
-install, then go to your email set up and save your password.
edit: This will also allow you to update htc weather, quickgps, and a number of other programs without receiving errors.
good luck and have a nice day

problems with email, icq and wlan

hi!
i'm a newbie @ this forum, so i hope that these questions are ok to ask & my english isn't the worst..
i'm from germany and i got the touch diamond from vodafone in germany..
now i've got 3 problems..
1. if i want to sync emails with my gmx account (pop3) i got a message, that i'm not able to sync it.. "synchronisation problem" maybe it's because the proxy doesn't allow that? i got a imap email account from vodafone too, and there are no problems.. is somebody there who has the same provider or problem?
2. i got qip for the diamond and i can't get a connection to the icq network. "connection timeout" or something like that is the message i get. i tested a lot of icq clients, and i use not the newest version of qip because in this version i'm able to set the proxy, where i set the settings like my connection settings from the windows mobile device.. i've heard, that some vodafone users get this started with my version & my settings, so maybe its somebody here who get this started too.
i think 1 & 2 are the same problem, there must be a mistake in the connection settings.. maybe there is no solution, i searched @ the whole web for weeks & nothing is usefull.. it's strange that i can use the vodafone live portal & google and everything else on port 80..
now there is still the problem 3, its the most important for me..
3. if i go to the standby-mode (the small button on the top of the phone^^) and it's in standby for a while, the damn wlan connection is turning on!!! its really bad, because the battery is empty after a short while. is there a way to disable the automatic wlan connection? after that i always have to go to >settings>connection manger and have to disable wlan.. i installed the advanced settings (i think i got it from here) and enabled a lot of power management settings, and if wlan doesn't turn on, my battery works for 1,5 days (if i doesn't access the internet and play with the phone).. this is a really bad disadvantage @ the phone.. if wlan is turning on the battery is empty after a few hours..
by the way, has somebody a tip for me to get the phone turned on for longer? and whats the record running time? xD
thank you before & i have to say...
.. this forum is the best for windows mobile devices!!! i got a lot of software from here
it's really impressive

Why all WM6.5 ROM Autoconnect to the Internet Service

Hi,
My blackstone connect to the internet service automatically draining my prepaid load.
Is this the same in all the WM 6.5?
WM6.1 doesnt do this. It only connects when I need it.
Does anyone have a fix on this. No push internet doesnt seem to solve this problem in my HTC BS.
Thanks

Because that was not the root cause ...
Actually the cause of the so called problem is a lack of understanding of the basic WM and HTC data connection settings and more specifically the way the two operate together, or don't in this case. In fact there really is no problem and nothing specific to the WM6.5 ROMs. This auto data connection behavior existed in my stock WM6.1 ROM way back in the dim old days.
Let me try to explain it this way.
First thing to understand is that there are two controls for Data Connection. A HTC TF3D/Sense one which everyone knows as Comm Manager. The second deeper level one is the WM6.X one which you will find at Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > Select Networks > Your Cellular Operator Settings (GPRS Settings).
The second thing to understand is that when you do a hard reset as you must when you flash a ROM, the Auto Connection Setup process will automatically select for you and set the GPRS settings on by default. So, deep down there, WM6.x has set you up to use a data connection automatically whenever your mobile needs a data connection and your WiFi is disabled. This happens for example if your email is set to auto download every so many minutes. Remember, email is a WM6.X service.
The third thing to understand is that the HTC Comm Manager really only controls data connections from the HTC interface, ie. TF3D/Sense. For example, if you do a weather update, this is a TF3D/Sense service. So if you turn off Data Connection in Comm Manager it will just turn off data connections to the interface. But lets say your email does an auto send and receive, because the WM6.X GPRS setting is enabled, a data connection will take place regardless of what you did in the Comm Manager.
So how to get around this problem? Easy! Go to the WM6.X setting for Connections that I pointed out above. After entering 'Select Networks' use the drop down box to select 'My Work Network' in the upper setting for programs that automatically connect to the internet. This will totally disable your data connection and it will not turn on again until you do the reverse.
Now, to turn data back on, you don't need to go into WM settings. You will find that the Comm Manager is sort of connected to the WM6.X setting. Turn on Data Connection in Comm Manager and you will find that it brings up the WM6.X Connections settings so that you can go to the drop down box and re-enable your Cellular operator's settings for GPRS. After clicking OK a few times you will end up back at Comm Manager where you turn on Data Connections. If you skip this last step, it will turn on automatically anyway when a program calls for a data connection.
Now the quirk is that Comm Manager is not connected to the WM6.x settings in the same way when you want to turn Data Connection off in Comm Manager. In other words it does not take you back to the WM connection settings when you turn it off as it does when you turn it on. As I showed you above, you have to do it the long winded way and dig deep into WM6.x Connection settings to turn off your cellular data connection. Yes sure, Comm Manager could definitely have been better built in this regards. But it has been like this since day 1.
Programs such as NoData which some chefs cook into their ROMs provide shortcuts to reach those deep WM Connections settings. But frankly, once you know where to find the settings, it becomes second nature and I have never had the need to use NoData.
Anyway, hope this helps.
i loved yr explanation but: i had never this "problem" in WM6.1 even when i always kept the "programs that automatically connect to the Internet......" settings to "orange 3G" (my portal) and only the "programs that automatically connect to a private network..." on "My Work Network".
after 5-6 years of heavy WM use (look at my sig/list of devices) this is the first time i encounter this problem.
I think Clicking on a Nodata shortcut would be much faster than going through all those steps. I hope a solution is found soon. But all ROMs I have tried have this same problem. no mail accounts setup nothing. It still try's to connect.
Turn off my location settings. Also check if "automatically update weather" is turned off.
Did the trick for me on all 6.5 ROM's.
Workaround:
1. Before flashing any Rom, remove the Sim card.
2. After flashing, uncheck "Enable Auto Configuration" from connection setup.
3. Put Sim card back and have a peace of mind.

Heh ... if you did it this way you won't have any MMS (unless you put it in manually) or Data connection when you want to turn it on.

Yep ... NoData is a solution.
I kind of grew into the habit of drilling down for the GPRS setting from the days when ROMs were not cooked with NoData or equivalents. Problem with these shortcuts is that for some it meant that the basic WM settings were never learnt, so when something goes wrong or a chef does not cook it in, the user gets lost. This is the same problem with the MMS connection issue in M2.5. The cause of the problem here, from my own experience, is with the updated WM Connections Auto Config putting in the wrong MMS access point settings. So when that happens, those who never learnt how to do it manually in WM get stuck.

This does not work for me. I have tried any of the turn off methods and nothing has worked. Going to try what abwyatt has suggested and see if this helps. To me this is a real big problem for some people. Even for me I have a 20 hr data plan for 1 month for about 7.00 USD after that it charges by the mb. Just last night on my last flash I was tired and forgot to enable nodata and woke up this morning and the data connection had been active for 9 hrs.

I would differ on that. It is directly related to problems with WM 6.5 ROM's. And not only as users but as cooks we are looking for answers as well. Moving to General section just assures the problem will not be addressed by our cooks here that may find a solution.
Just my opinion

Point taken and I agree with your comments above. To to show users that we Mod's do listen as well, I will happily move this thread back to rom development
Thank you, and it's good that you see both sides.
I disabled mine from Settings>Data Services>ActiveSync>Sync data automatically
Now I only get auto connected after soft reset, then just disable from Comm Manager>Data Connection>Off and it doesn't connect by itself anymore
But still works when needed for weather mail etc.
Just to put my 2 cents on the table here. All wm6.5 roms I've tried have had this and I generally install NoData for quick fix, but after a period of time it started to bug me. So upon further investigation it did turn out to be an app seeking automatic update, whether it was email, QuickGPS, weather, stock, facebook, activesync or some other app. Having gone through all these apps or whatever apps installed on rom and then disabling them, the problem seizes to exist. The confusing thing is that it is not consistent, i.e. with different rom's it appears to be a different app which caused the issue!!
I've tried ROM like PhamQhuang, MaryOne etc. I think the problem is from HTC sense, if we switch to HTC sense off or set to windows default the auto connection working well (not reconnect when we off data connection)
