TILT will only charge with power turned off - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I have a familiar problem we've all read about but my instance seems to be a bit different than anything i've found when searching the forums. Heres the Details.
I have a Tilt, I'm running Dutty's WM6.1. I've been running it for weeks and all is great. recently bought a usb car adapter. plugged it in and the phone lit the red light of doom and shut down. i soft reset...same problem. so I left it alone. Now my TILT turns on fine, operates fine. boots in a timely fashion but will not recognize any USB cord i've plugged in. I've tried many. However it WILL charge when the power is turned off. the red light is lit while charging but it charges.
and in case it helps anyone...the bootloader does say SERIAL and no usb.
I've seen lots of different instances of this issue on the forum search but they all were a little different from my situation or an answer was never given in the thread. Thank you to any one who knows the secret to this or has a solution that works.

Seems you fryed some part of your USB port. You should send it in to AT&T if you're under warrenty. If not, best thing is to replace it by solderng a new USB port.
Kraize

Since you can still turn it on and all seems relatively normal why not back up your data and try a Hard Reset ?
You may not have bricked it...may I ask which USB car charger you bought so I can avoid it ?
I doubt the physical USB jack is damaged, anythings possible but it's more likely worse than that IF it is not software/rom related.
Hope you solve it cheaply !

are you trying to charge it with the one that came with the kaiser?

Vehicle chargers won't work...

Okay, I'm stumped. I'm already getting a replacement device from HTC under warranty so my problem is solved, but like many of you, I HATE NOT HAVING AN EXPLANATION FOR THINGS!
I'm also wondering if anyone else has had this problem? About 10-Days ago my Kaiser (Tilt) stopped charging via the automotive charger. The A-C charger works fine, but the vehicle charger sent to me with my device from AT&T completely stopped charging my device. I went to the AT&T store & bought a new charger, It didn't work. I changed power points, & cigarette lighter in the vehicle &, it wouldn't work. I tried the charger in the vehicle of two different AT&T sales guys & also tried multiple chargers, & it wouldn't work. Is there any reason why the unit would lose it's ability to charge via a vehicle charger while still retaining it's ability to charge through USB to computer & through the A/C home charger? It seems to me that if the charge portion of the MB was fried, then all charging would be affected.
So how can my device charge fine through all means EXCEPT the vehicle charger?
Again, AT&T is sending me a new device, but I hate not having an explanation for the problem, drives me Nucking Futs!!!
Any ideas, anyone?
Thx!
I dont want to sound rude but have you checked your power settings?
Under the "Advanced" it has a option for "When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC."
If this is ticked it will not charge via the in car charger.
It's a known issue, not just with the Tilt
I had the same problem with my Axim X50 and X51v.
The original sync/charge cable wouldn't charge from the car's lighter, while non-branded cables did so without any problems at all.
This happened with other Axims as well, so I know that it wasn't a defective unit.
I then purchased an HP Ipaq HW6910, and encountered the same issue with my wife's Mazda 5 - the HW6910 woudn't charge if the cable was connected to the charger, when I started the car. It only worked if the adapter and cable were disconnected while staring the car. This did not happen with my Mazda 3 or my Mitsubishi.
And another thing I discovered, is that some cables are not designed for use with car chargers, but they work perfectly with AC chargers.
I bought a couple of retracting sync/charge cables for my HW6910, they worked only when connected to the mains. But regular cables worked perfectly with both power sources.

OF COURSE I DID.
Yeah, It charges fine from the PC, & from an A/C source. But the HTC TYTNII car charger that came with my device, as well as replacement car chargers don't work.

Funny, I just ran out to the truck & grabbed one of the guys Blackberry chargers & it looked like it was working. But SK Tools reports an even bigger (negative) amp draw (like discharging twice the normal rate). So with the BB charger it dischages even faster. Maybe reversed polarity Guess I should've checked first. That's a moot point now though as I await my new unit. Weird though.
Well i was using a BB charger that worked fine up until this morning. i bought my phone when it first came out so it wasnt easy to find a charger made for it at the time. i never had a problem until today. i also noticed that the Usb terminal on my device was bent. i called htc but they charge way too much to fix it. i have no idea how or when the terminal broke but it does still charge when pluged into pc or into the wall. ill have to spend $80 to have ppctechs fix it.
wassup, i`m in SF Cali, I had a att 8525 that was doing the same thing. I assumed it was the phone when it 1st started happening. After a week or so it was bothering me so i started playing with it trying to figure out if it was a setting, bad flash, or hardware. I noticed that if the phone was off it wood charge but not if it was on. I started flashing my phone and testing (for trouble shooting purposes) and for the first 2 or 3 roms problem still existed, then one of the roms i flashed to would turn on the back light as if it was charging but no LED or charge, when this started happening I realized that if i turned my fone off it wood start charging and continue to charge when i booted the fone back up. So if when i got in the car i pluged in/ shutdown/ waited like 45 sec or 1 min. / then booted it would temp. fix the problem for as long as my fone was on the cable. At some point after that many weeks/roms later i noticed it was working correctly again, So I had decided it was a glitch in the rom, But i`m not a Dev. or fone guru so I really dont know what it was, but hope this helps someone.... The slight diagonal slant on the bottom right? It's supposed to be like that. All AT&T Tilts (and I'd assume TyTN II's, but I've never had one to compare) have a mini-usb port that looks that way.
i looked at a 8525 and the usb terminal was straight. i even took a pencil and straightened mine out. it should be bent. that wouldn't make sense because the charges slot is not bent. i think the problem is that one side of the terminal is not soldered to the board and can easily be broken. in another thread 3 people have the same issue. as far as the car charger goes ill do some testing but until today it was charging fine while the phone was on.
this issue is known ,it even happens with the htc tynt.... by simlpy rebooting while in the charger it starts working again ..at least with mine.
I've had the same problem. I went to the lcoal AT&T store and they said they never heard of it so I thought it was just me. It looks like many of you have the issue. I wish I knew what it was. It was really bad with my 8525,
i thought Faria developed a cab to fix this issue in the hermes forum? might be worth having a search for it and when i get home i will see if i have a copy on my pc.
any of you guys get anywhere with this? I have exactly the same problem. posted in a couple of other threads actually.
Not sure whether the usb port is damaged, but it's certainly is slightly "down" on the right hand side.
It charges perfectly on the mains and perfectly from usb, but not in the car.
I have used a normal car charger, spent £50 on a Carcomm powered mount and tried one of the separate chargers that you plug the standard mini usb cable into. Nothing works. This is driving me crazy (if you'll excuse the pun!) a the primary reason I bought the Kaiser, was for GPS.
Thanks
well i also just found out 2 of my minisync cables dont work anymore. 1 of them still charges the phone but neither of them sync the phone anymore. it still syncs fine through a normal usb cable.
I am using a moto Razr car charger and it works fine so far.
Okay, confirmed on my replacement Tilt: The USB port is arrow straight. Someone earlier mentioned it being lower on the right side & indeed my DEAD DEVICE was as such. Looks like a bad job of connecting the port to the device.
NOTE!!!!!!
It's a good idea to take a look at your charger before you plug it in to make sure the charger USB connector is not bent or mi-sshappened.
i have the same problem i went through 4 att car chargers adn 5 phones. They are crap. Its not the phone its the charger if you play with it you will see that it comes and goes. The end tip on the charger is bad doesnt make a good connection. i have yet to find a good car charger.
Mine stopped charging using the car charger supplied and a brodit. A friend's kaiser charges OK with the same chargers.
No-one has mentioned it in this thread, but my phone, shows "charging" in the battery control panel and the LED lights up to confirm this. The percentage charge value decreases as though it isn't being charged!
As others have done I noticed that the corner of the plastic centre of the connector nearest the reset hole was slightly bent and I assume (though can't remember doing so) that I missed the reset hole with the stylus tip and pushed it in. Menu driven resets for me from now on!
HTC Europe didn't know anything about this fault, so seem to be happy to repair / replace it under warranty. It's with them at the moment, so I'll have to wait and see.

Please let me know the outcome. mine is getting worse by the day.
Now I'm confused.
Because the device charges over USB I just assumed it would draw <500mA (the max output of a USB port) but the specs say it draws up to one amp.
Having owned a high-drawing device before (Axim x50v) I know that trying to pull this out of a USB port can blow your motherboard. So are these safe to charge over USB??? How does the device know whether its being charged over USB or mains - are there different charging pins on the connector?

huge problem. Need Help please

Alright my phone has randomly stopped charging and its very annoying. I thought it was a bug in JF's 1.5 so I reflashed back to RC29 and rerooted and got back to cupcake with apps2sd and everything. It still stops charging. Here's where it gets weird though, it only stops charging if I hold my phone in landscape view, otherwise in portrait it charges. And it also continues to not charge if my phone is completely off, but in landscape. Does anyone know how to fix this or will I have to get a new G1?
Could be a loose charging port. If you have an extra charger try that. There is really no other reason why is would do that. The firmware your running shouldn't effect it at all.
I had some weird problems similar. First question are you using USB charge cable from a PC or AC adapter. I've burned through 2 USB HTC cables connected via usb off my pc, but charges fine from an AC, USB car charger, and non HTC mini USB cable from an External HDD.
problem solved
Alright thanks for all your guys' suggestions, but it turns out I was blaming the phone when the real problem was my charger. I was only testing this problem on my stock G1 charger, but I used my old blackberry one and it worked fine. So I guess I'm just going to have to use a blackberry charger till I get my new phone. Thank you!
Same thing happened to me, except i ended up taking it to tmobile, waited in line, cute girl line, got up to her, told her whats wrong, she takes my g1, and plugs in a new charger, it works, i just stood there looking dumbfounded, and she had that "what are you an idiot" look on her face, haha
yeah, chargers go out all the time

Battery not charging

So after a fruitless forum search for people in my situation, I'm hoping I can get an answer to my battery problem. A couple of days ago, my Tilt just quit accepting a battery charge. I tried it out of both the wall charger (stock) and from my computer, neither of which work. There's no orange charge LED nor any indication on the phone that it's plugged in. Additionally, it does not establish an activesync connection on the computer. It's as if the USB port just quit working. The weird thing is, I just plugged in my headphones and was able to listen to music, so this is clearly not the case.
So far I've tried a hard reset and also pulling the battery out and cleaning the leads, as well as cleaning the leads in the usb port. I'm running Mbvarian's Solace 3.1 if it makes a difference. Anyway, there's a 60% charge left on the phone, and I've shut it off to conserve power in the event that I need to flash the stock ROM back to it and send it in for repair, since I buy the insurance on it. Obviously, I'll have to do this by SD card since it's not syncing. So, I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this, and also if I flash AT&T rom back to the phone, whether they'll know that I had flashed a cooked rom.
Thanks.
Have you tried changing your SPL or Radio? I had the same problem(at least with the wall charger not charging). I flashed a 6.5 ROM and no more wall charging. Tried three other 6.5 ROMs and same thing so I switched radios with each ROM. No Luck so I went through changing SPLs and trying different radios and ROMs. I had a busy six days trying to get my phone back. The wall charger charges now,but no where near as fast as it used to. On the flip side the usb charges way faster now. Sorry I couldn't give you a better answer.
i had the same problem, tried everything, i finally got fed up and sent it to htc, they told me that the charging port came off the motherboard, wanted to charge 250 for fix, baskely the phone was dead, sry
I had the same issue....broke my mini-usb connector...stuck the stylus in when I was trying to soft reset in the dark.
I tried HTC...too much money, they said the motherboard had to be replaced, for about $300...BS.
Sent it to www.ppctechs.com excellent service, good price and excellent turn-around time.
I was thinking the connector might be broken, but if that was the case, shouldn't my headphones not work either?
Not necessisarily....depends on which pins (or contacts) are screwed up.
By the way, HTC wants to replace the motherboard.
PPCTechs will repair by replacing the mini USB connection on the motherboard.
Ok now I don't feel so bad I did the same exact thing. Alcohol may or may not have had a part in that.

TYTN 2 won't turn on

Sorry this was previously posted in the wrong forum, mis described as a tytn!
My son is unable to turn his tytn2 on, I think the battery has run down completely, as when I turn it on, I get the "smart mobilty" flash screen with the RGB data, then it turns off as if completely flat, when I plug the charger in, the led charging lighton the top of the phone does not light. At the moment I have tried removing the battery for a while to see of that "resets" it, I have also tried soft reseting but no joy yet.
Doing a bit of research, it looks like the fuse may have blown, I have emailed a repair company who have quoted £40+vat + £6 postage each way, which works out at £58, is the fuse the likely cause, could I get fixed anywhere else, looking on the htc manuals it would appear to definitely not be a diy fix (not for me anyway!)
Try charging from the USB cable plugged into a PC

Sounds very familiar so far... no blown fuse involved here however, it was a blown HTC supplied original mains power supply unit in my case - the light on the power supply stopped working also. Although I could have had this replaced for free under warranty, I didn't want another of the same type (which is all HTC said they'd provide), so I splashed out on an £8.99 Power Supply from a company based in Aylesbury. It has a shiny black plastic case (nicely matching the TyTN II case), works at both 110 and 230 Volts and came with 4 interchangable mains socket adapters for use with different mains sockets around the world. Before you rush out to get another PSU however, check if the light on the power supply still works. Will the phone charge if you connect it to a PC via the USB cable and does the phone light come on in this case (note that the phone doesn't need to be powered on to charge the battery this way, as long as the PC it's connected to is up and running)? If not, you may have a damaged USB port on the TyTN II and although this can be repaired, if it's out of warranty, a repair centre would need to do the work if you're not handy with that sort of thing. HTC have a repair depot in Kingston, Milton Keynes that should be able to do this sort of thing. Depending how your results go with the above tests, you could give them a call, the number is in your manual.
I have tried 2 chargers + the usb, no lights on phone, if I plug in my TP2 it charges correctly, so I think the fault is with the phone, it is now getting as far as the windows screen then dying (presumably after standing for a day or so the battery has recovered enough to go a little further) so the fault would appear to be somewhere in the charging circuit.

Which includes the USB port on the bottom of the phone. Have a careful look for any bent or broken pins there. It's also worth searching here on xda-dev for broken Kaiser USB port threads because this is a topic which has been posted about many times.
If you don't want the expense of getting the phone repaired and can make do without a working USB charging port, you can always buy a Kaiser charging cradle that comes with an additional battery bay to use as a spare charger then just use the battery bay to charge a spare battery and swap them over when reqd. You could also use bluetooth for Activesyncing (buying a bluetooth dongle for the pc to be synched with if needed).
My sons 8925 did the same thing.. and even though his USB looked to be "perfect" it was the problem... It stopped taking a charge from it.. out "work around" involved ordering one of those phone docking stands which had a seperate battery charger and an extra battery or 2.. Then he just had to swap batteries when one died and charge it in the stand.. We did a 3 battery... 1 for in the phone, one for in his wallet so he had one to swap anywhere, and 1 for in the charger.. it worked well (and he is a heavy user of the Wifi and GPS and such)..I hope this helps you out!

Kaiser no charge,only on usb

Hello I have a very serious problem whit my Kaiser it doesn't charge, only on usb. I have a PDA charger, and a car charger(may be this is it's name) but they don't charge my kaiser.
I upgrade the radio recently and than i upgrade the rom. After that i discovered that problem.
Moreover the mini usb connection port on my PDA is in bad condition.
Perhaps that is the problem?
Please answer me.
If the miniusb port is in bad condition, it could be the port that is the issue.
Normally, if only one charger isnt working, I would say it is possible that the power supply on the charger is either sub-par or no longer working correctly. However, if your car charger isn't charging it either, that is a bit odd.
Was everything working properly until you began flashing things, or is it possible you just did not notice it until now?
EDIT: I misunderstood the OP and posted incorrect advice, please ignore this comment.
Well, before the flash the PDA charged both with the car carger and the regular charger.
But in the past I saw, when I plug the charger into the Mini usb port the PDA's led become orange (you know that's mean the charge) but the battery's power was the same after 2 hours. And now I connected again and the led wasn't change...:S But the usb carged my PDA 100% for the morning...
Well neither the chargers aren't the HTS's official chargers and the PDA isn't charge eith them when I turn of.
But it's charge from the USB. I can't understand it...
Sorry I have no idea, this is out of my league, I'm a noob
Wish I could help.
I have had the exact same issue since six months ago, and MiniDevil is probably correct.
If you look closely on the miniUSB jack on your phone one of the contact (golden) pins should be bent down, rather than up (if you are looking it with your phone's screen facing up). On mine is the rightmost pin.
When this first occurred I went to various repair centers and unfortunately no one could offer me a fix. You should check your local repair centers, maybe you have better luck.
I don't know what works differently from a USB port to a USB AC Charger. Maybe someone can clarify this part.
Good luck to you sir.
- Jim
Thanx all the answers
seriously? the usb works but the ac chargers don't because of the pins?! gahh. the igo might work...they tested it out at an att store for me, i just dont know which it is..i probably have to go back..
