I been reading other threads and i cannot find an answer. I even called att and they were no help.
I installed the windows live for windows mobile version 10.6.0034.0800 fixed.
When i'm using this messenger, how i'm being billed. Data? or Text message?
I have a unlimited data plan, so i'm hoping i'm not being charged per message. Can anyone help me with this question.
Thanks
The Tilt has Oz Messenger on it which has WLM, AOL, and Yahoo which connects via their phone network and it counts as SMS for every message you send/receive. With the Windows Live Messenger cab, it depends actually, if you are connecting through the ATT network then it's considered SMS but if you connect to the net Wi-Fi, no charges except whatever you pay for Wi-Fi (like pay hotspots)
Alemaker
I'm not using the oz messenger with the provided windows live. I'm using another version of the messenger that i found in another thread.
10.6.0034.0800 fixed. version
best way to go then. The Oz Messenger only connects through the ATT network whereas the Windows Live Messenger cab you installed can use either the ATT network or Wi-Fi.That's what I'm using also. Here's another little catch. If you connect using the ATT network(which is then an SMS for each message) if you start a conversation with someone internationally, you are charged international text rates.
Found that out the hard way when a friend in Germany started a convo with me!!

Seriously? I assumed the live messenger cab would use the data connection, not SMS. Does it really send via SMS when on network and wifi when off?

Well....
I'm screwed, thanks for your help.
anyone else ?
Unless they changed it really recently, I tested it-on ATT=SMS, I barely text anyone and when my friend I.M.'ed me from Germany, all those showed on my bill as international SMS-on Wi-Fi=no charges
That's why I dumped Oz Messenger
are you still using the windows messenger cab?
Yup I'm using the exact one you listed. I just try not to use it while I'm on the ATT network cuz I only have the 200 message plan but it doesn't matter to me as alot of times I'm in a area with Wi-Fi so I just disconnect the ATT data connection and connect via Wi-Fi

It's easy to check,
Just start a conversation with someone using Windows Live Messenger on your phone and write down the exact time and date then check your next bill. All data and texts are time stamped on the bill.

and how do u disconnect the att connection?
correct; and just click on the 3G or Edge icon and a small menu will show up with a disconnect option button, if you are using a cooked ROM, then open Comm Manager directly and disconnect the data connection.

Windows Live using SMS?!? I don't use MSN messinger very often, but I don't remember it using SMS, it uses data.
the version of the messenger that i have i believe is the one the one that comes with the new windows mobile 6.1. I know that the messenger that came with my tilt uses sms messages instead of data. I guess i will be using OCTRO TALK.
Any other messenger suggestions?

As this seems to need clarification, I spoke with ATT data tech support and per ATT, when you use an I.M. client directly ( not going to the net and using a web based I.M.) it is billed as I.M. which is text.
If you connect to the net with MediaNet and then go to WL Mobile website or Yahoo website etc. and use I.M. web-based, it is data, but directly connecting with the WLM cab or the proprietary Oz I.M., it is billed as text even though it uses the MediaNet connection.
ATT Tilt here and using the latest WL (10.6.0034.0800 fixed) and .0600 before it. On an unlimited data connection (PDA Personal Max I believe).
I use it regularly and never see any text message usage - I have read numerous postings that back that up? I'm not saying I don't believe what Alemaker is saying, I just find it hard to believe. I've just never had it use my text messages and neither have any of the other folks in my office (7 of us here with Tilt's and all using with IM).
NOTE - If you use the built in OZ IM, yes it will use sms text messages. This is not Windows Live though. It is an app that allows you to connect to the major IM networks. WL is designed to use an internet connection (IE Data, Wifi, etc.).
That's fine-I have seen billed as text them from international I.M.'s and to be honest, the CSR's at ATT gave me conflicting answers themselves, one said data, one said text and one even said billed same as e-mail(data). So that's why I contacted data tech support. And if it truly does turn out to use data-all the better. Just stating what I have seen. I don't I.M. mobile alot to begin with but just I.M.'ed someone using the WLM cab app and will look at my next bill

I agree... What the others are saying about Windows Live Mobile (replaced Mobile MSN) I can't agree with. Windows Live syncs my Hotmail and has a mobile MSN messinger client. And so far I haven't seen it use SMS for IMs.

if you are using that version of WLM then i can garuntee you that you are using data and not text. There are several clients that support WLM including oz messenger that use texts, but the windows mobile version you described definitely uses data.

Is it me or does the OZ IM client that comes with the AT&T Tilt not work right when you talk to other people?
My friend has the real AIM client on his Mogul and I tried to chat with him via OZ IM and all he sees is blank messages.
I tried Agile and it works great. I have to buy it though, so...I tried the AIM client (from the UK site) and it works too, but it's crap because the notifications are bad and it seems like an old program.
Any ideas?
its bc Oz IM uses text messaging instead of data and the mobile version of aim doesnt support text messaging.
Which IM service you using? MSN, AIM? I don't use AIM or Yahoo, but I do use MSN form time to time. Windows Live works just fine for that, and uses data, not SMS.
I wanted to use AIM. I have an unlimited data plan and that's the reason I wanted to use data instead of SMS. Any way to make this client work? Don't want to buy Agile.

Thanks. I gave the Palgrino app a try, which one do you recommend?
Works!!
Palgrino is working for me. its quick and stays connected even when minimized.
I use Slick. It works really well and uses data.
Hi:
Do any of these have smilies?
I just installed Palringo, and it looks very nice, but no smilies.
Thanks!
PS: I don't mind paying for it, if it has a nice enough interface, and smilies. Palringo looks amazing, it's exactly what I am looking for except for the smilies.
Beejive had it on my blackberry untill i got the tilt. works like a charm for me and it shows notifications and smilies and supports all clients

The problem in my eyes with the applications that use DATA connections instead of SMS, is that while logged in, now my Tilt has to maintain a live data connection with the network.
What I like about an SMS version is that no matter where I am, 3G, Edge, it just works over SMS. True it's not as "responsive" as a data connection, but it's mobile IM. What do you expect?
On that note, since I'm running aftermarket cooked ROM, does anyone have the OZ IM client that the tilt shipped with available?
can someone post the aol instant messanger cab from the att tilt ext rom or from anywhere else for that matter. thanks
Lol... I am trying to figure out how to get the Tilt AIM back too after cutting out the AT&T installed apps.

How can I connect to these built-in messengers using wifi instead of data connection?
its in the Kaiser Cab collection fount here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332438
its the OZ_Instant_messenger plugin on this page: http://www.cinetsystems.com/xda/index.php?path=Kaiser+Cab+Collections/

EDIT:
raca in the CommManager turn on the wifi if you already havent, then go into settings > connections > wifi and add your stuff in there
does anybody know if this app uses txt messages or data?
I can't say for certain, but the TMobile MDA has a similar app by the same name, and that one uses sms.....
The AT&T app uses SMS messages.
If you're looking for one that uses 3G or WiFi, you will need to shell out some $$ for Agile Messenger or another similar program.
about tmobile aim oz working with tilt as txt msging
just incase if anyone was wondering about tmobile & this (i tried this forever) It doesn't work. I tried all of the cabs. I spoke to someone who worked at a store and they said as soon as my phone was unlocked, oz messenger aim will not work anymore... (used to have a tmo dash and my aim really did stop working after unlocking it) it would be awesome if someone could figure this one out..
I use agilemobile for AIM, ICQ, Google-chat and more.
Pretty impressive BTW
I was thinking that perhaps the problem is that I have the cingular hidden proxy disable. Can anyone comment on this? You can just put a proxy into the settings of AIM alone, but I'm not sure what to enter. If someone can let me know, I'd appreciate it, and will test it.
OZ messenger sucks I think. I use Palringo and it's free.
OZ uses SMS so for everyone "HI how you doing buddy" you send you use one text message.
To my knowledge and looking at my bill Palringo uses data and not sms.
use aim 2.0

Your right, palringo uses data. But it still has major flaws. If you log in more than 5 or 6 times in a row it doesn't allow you to log back in again. Which is really stupid, because why would I be AIM/Yahoo/whatever if no one is online? So I sign off.
Idk, I still use it but it sucks.

I have the Tilt and I was wondering is their anyway I can have both Media Net and Balckberry running at the same time? Everytime i am messages or browser the web my bb disconnects. Any way around this?
No, the Tilt can only connect to one APN at a time. MediaNet or blackberry.net
eh? so if i were to use ONLY the bb connect service for email, i'll get disconnected from browsing etc every time an email gets pushed out to me?
another question. i'm currently pulling down 4 pop3 accounts into their individual email "folders" on my tilt via default pocket outlook polling setup. can blackberry connect do the same with regards to different "folders" / account?
eg: shove different account emails to their respective outlook folders vs all in one bucket?
i had a 7200 series blackberry *years* ago using bb internet service and regardless of how many accounts you pulled down it all got dumped into the same bucket so to speak. there was no easy way to differentiate between biz critical vs personal emails at a glance.
?? so far i havent been able to find any helpful info re bb connect online yet.

No, it's the other way around. Whenever something else grabs the data link, BBConnect goes into suspend mode and will reconnect when it's released.

I creates a separate folder for each e-mail acount. As far as I know, that's the only way it will do it.
how does it work Blackberry connect on the Kaiser ?
Do we need to install the Blackberry software ? (Blackberry connect 4).
Can we then browser the internet if my company pay for it ? (I had Blackberry connect 2 installed on an HTC Universal, I could read my emails and sync Calendar/notes/tasks but I never could browser the internet ...I never could make Black Connect 4 working on my Universal, so I don't know if I would be able to browser the internet with it).

There are a number of threads of people posting their experience with BBC on the Kaiser. Browsing works, with some limitations. But also, its possible that your company's policies can restrict some BB functionality. It all depends on the config and the plans you have. But ultimately, you canbrowse the internet, you can get your email pushed to you. The biggest issue is the data connection issue described in the last couple posts. If you want more info. Search this forum for blackberry and you will find alot of testimonial expeirence in getting it set up and using it.
Personally, I found it to be too slow, too much of a memory and battery hog. I removed it within 2 days of installing it. And the difference in performance on the Kaiser and its battery is night and day IMO.
I use Seven's beta software now for my email pushing.
Thanks a lot for your infos !
I've been running it for a little more than a week.
Cons: I noticed that sometimes my appointments don't update on the Tilt when I move it on my desktop OL calender. You need to keep as few programs running as possible or it slows the device and the battery life isn't good. I like the BB keypad better. The Tilt wakes up with the screen dim and outside it is a real problem. I've had it lock up a few times and go so slow I needed to reset.
Pros: Best of WM and BB. The BB has a poor PIM so using PocketInformant again is very nice. 3G for browsing. The disconnect-reconnect is automatic so it isn't a problem for me.
I haven't made up my mind if I going to go back to my 8800. If I wasn't using BES (corporate email) I wouldn't use the BB but that isn't my choice.
Regards-Michael G.

Yes, you need to install BBConnect. You want BBConnect 4. I understand that HTC makes it available on their website for Kaiser. I got mine through AT&T on a Tilt, so it was a little different. One quirk, if you got your Kaiser in North America, you have to figure out if it came from Europe or Asia to register on the HTC site. One of the major improvements in BBConnect 4 is it will suspend the blackberry connection if you access the internet using a non-blackberry browser.
You can browse the internet one of two ways. When you install the blackberry software, it also installs the blackberry browser. It will be in the blackberry folder in the programs folder. This goes through your company's system to the internet. This won't interrupt your e-mail, but the blackberry browser is rather weak.
The other way is through any other browser. However, you have to have the APN for your provider programmed in. Your provider's web site will probably have that information. Unlimited data usually comes with a blackberry data plan. So, if you can get your company to pay for a plan, that should get you internet access, even if you don't go through your company's BES system.

Regardless of where your Kaiser or Tilt came from, you can follow these links to the software needed to install it, if you want it.

You need 2 pieces (get one from each link above):
1. You need the Blackberry Connect software that installs on your Kaiser/Tilt. It's a .cab file. (first link above)
2. You need the Blackberry Connect for Windows Desktop software that installs on your PC. It's a .exe file. (second link above, halfway down the page)

well i talked to a few att reps about this and have gotten different answers from all 4 them. 2 say that in order to use the oz IM client you need a data plan because it connects to media.net to sign on. the other 2 say its billed as sms. this is also what is says on their website also https://www.wireless.att.com/support/knowledgeBase.do?content=KB84620.html . so thought you guys might know for sure whether using this client is billed as data, sms, or both. this would probably also answer my question for sending MMS if its just charged as data, a message, or both since it connects to media.net to send. thanks.
device is an att tilt with stock att rom
it connects to media net to signon, but when you are chatting and sending msgs back and forth that is SMS not data. on your bill it will show up as "ICQ IM" under TYPE, and your number under FROM.

Another quick question - I am running one of Dutty's roms and I noticed whenever my phone is connected as a 3G I cannot sign on using the OZ IM client.
Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution?
Mine uses the data to connect and get my buddy lists, but then each line I type is counted as one SMS, and each line I receive is counted as another SMS. It does not show up on my bill is ICQ though, but IMSMS or something along those lines. So I've seen on my bill the data connect AND the SMS for OZ IM. I am certainly looking for another IM client! I used to use Agile Messenger, but they charge an annual subscription. There HAS to be a better option! Anyone have any ideas for a decent, data only, IM client?

Use MSN Live
You can install MSN live cab availible around. It will use MSN messanger and it go over internet connection, no per SMS charges. Additional benefit pushmail connection to people using hotail or msn hosted accounts. Just change in option sync type from manual to when item arrived.

I use Fring or Palringo, both are free and will work for MSN, Google Talk, Yahoo, etc. The main difference between the two IM programs is that Fring also does VOIP calling through Skype. They both work on data, not SMS.
Sorry if I seem like such a noob but ive been searching and still cant get OZ messenger to work. I have a Fuze thats unlocked to T-mobile with Romeos rom. I have unlimited sms so I would like to try out OZ messenger which i got from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366157 I then moved the file to my phone via active sync. I went to the folder which contained some files but nothing that would launch an install. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.
You need to transfer the .cab file to your Windows mobile device and run it from the device, not the PC.
Here's the .CAB
The OZ Messenger CAB extracted from the T-Mobile ROM was a pain to find for me, so I'll post it here for you.
Just install this on your Raphel, and you're good to go. I use it with T-Mobile as well.
Just to verify, OZ messenger uses SMS to communicate with AIM,ICQ, and Yahoo so not data plan is required.
Enjoy! If you have any questions, let me know
yea but OZ messenger needs some data connection to establish a connection.
been down that road before...lol
All it requires is the standard data connection that is provided for every t-mobile customer. I'm pretty sure it requires a EDGE connection, but I don't have any data plan it runs perfectly fine.
