I've spent about an hour digging through the forums here searching for ROMs that are true to my T-Mobile MDA. I like and am used to a lot of the built-in apps from T-Mobile, so i'd like to get a ROM as close to the T-Mobile Wing as possible. I understand the difference in hardware from MDA to Wing, but i'm sure some carrier that used the Wizard offers an official upgrade to WM6, right? And of course, with some cooking a T-Mobile USA ROM could come out of that with some time spent tinkering. (something i'm really not good at)
Also, i'm kind of stuck with using Windows Vista since i upgraded back in February and kissed XP goodbye. The only way i use XP now is in Virtual PC which i know won't connect to anything over USB. I really want to avoid dual-booting if at all possible. I've tried the USB driver update solution to no avail. So what are my options? I've never updated to a 3rd party ROM before, and since T-Mobile refuses to update the MDA i'm rather stuck. Suggestions, please!
Oh and the desire for WM6 comes from some severe issues i've had with WM5 and dropping my data connection and phone calls related to the AKU update for direct push released many months ago. Plus it'll make me feel like i'm using a newer device instead of the same-old MDA from last year.
Doood
Why doesn't anyone ever dual boot xp and vista is my question haha.. xp takes like 2.5gb
EXACTLY.
I've done that.
I have 2, 60 GB in my LAPTOP.
So If i can do it on my laptop you can do it on your big bulky desktop.
I recently had the chance to play with the Nokia E61i and the built in VOIP client is brilliant. It allows you to use internal speaker, speaker phone and bluetooth with VOIP calls.
I had a Pocket PC before HTC Titan, but unfortunately had to sell it because I am traveling a lot now. I will primarly use my device in South America where the WCDMA band is different. I am thinking about getting the Nokia E90 or the HTC Kaiser, but must make sure the Kaiser will have built in VOIP client. Can someone confirm? Thanks
Even knowing there are many VOIP applications for Windows Mobile, I tried many with the HTC Titan and only ONE worked ok, but the problem was it only worked trough the speaker phone which was very annoying and not convenient.
I understand voip should be included in WM6.
IE : the integrated phone application can do voip.
Tried it with WM6 and voipbuster on my HTC Wizard and it's working although the sound is not so good sometimes because of the Wizard weak processor (I think).

I have already asked that question some time ago - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=322377 - and it turned out there is no VoIP support in Kaiser by default. I haven't seen any traces of VoIP in Kaiser I've played with two days ago. And finally, take a look into official Kaiser product sheets - they don't mention VoIP at all, while it's a good feature to shout about.
So basically, there is no VoIP support in Kaiser. However, installing it as an add-on from cab files might have a chance to work, but someone with real Kaiser with hands would need to test it and let us know.
That is really sad. I guess I am going to have to go with the Nokia E90 until a Windows Mobile device has a built in VOIP client.

VOIP is easily installed by YOU.
There's no reason to not get a kaiser because it doesn't have this if you are a member of these forums.

Well, this is great news! I hope I could confirm it as soon as my Kaiser come - I couldn't resist and pre-ordered one in Handtec.co.uk. ))
Installed the .cab as well and works like a charm.

I have Kaiser now, I've installed VOIP Drivers.cab and MajikVOIP.cab. Installs all components correctly, logs into SIP account, makes a call, but... sound comes out of external speaker, instead of internal earpiece!
Did you manage to make it work properly and if yes - which cabs exactly did you install? Thanks.
im keen to find out also! I thought that you could only access voip using cooked roms.
There are a number of WM5 VoIP endpoints available.... however I'm not entirely sure about WM6 yet. I work in VoIP, and its on my list of things the check now that i have my shiny new TyTN II sat infront of me!
I'll keep you all updated with my findings.
Mind you.. i must check tmobiles policy on VoIP, I had a sneaky feeling they are blocking necessary ports...
managing your voip client?
for those with Voip enabled and working, can you tell me how the voip client determines which connection to use, ie wifi or using the data plan?
I have installed Fring and it works well. Is this different than the other voip programs discussed above?
from what i understand, Fring is a stand alone app, where as the voip i am looking at is fully integrated into the phone and uses the standard dialer, hence my previous question about how the Voip determines which connection to use? And if that is automatic? ie. if wifi is available will it just connect via wifi and if wifi isnt available will it then revert automatically to using the data plan to make the voip call.
Not that this helps with the Kaiser, but according to HP, the new iPaq BM series should have the VoIP client enabled by default; in fact, as far as I'm aware, it's the only device announced with it enabled.
Hi,
I'm new to the PDA and WM phone world, and i have a quick question. If there was a voip program of sorts for a phone like this, would that mean you could just pay for a data plan and not have to pay for a voice plan from a company like AT&T? And then u could still text message, e-mail, internet and the sorts, but also be able to make calls through your program?
Hi
Most providers (certainly here in the UK) flag data used for Messenging and/or VoIP so they are charge at a higher rate or excluded from your inclusive allowance so you pay extra or not blocked completely.
VoIP on a mobile device is only really of benefit when you are in range of a wireless connection.
Regards
Phil
Hey, thanks for the reply. Does anyone know if AT&T restrict data like he said? That's gonna be the main service i will be using, and want to know if they do or not.

Use one of the attached cabs to identify your phone as an N95. Personally I use it for Vodafone Live access, but I'm told it also works for those on "Planet 3".
You can install and uninstall the cab to switch between N95 and TyTN II as required, but a soft reset is needed after installation.
It uses a modified "browser.dll" file, which is different for WM6 and WM6.1 so make sure you install the correct one...!
Iv installed the cab, although i dont understand what you mean with switching between n95 etc. I cant find any program or application that has been installed by doing cab installation that you suggested?! Cheers
It doesn't install any program. It changes the way your phone reports itself to websites. In this case the website will think you are holding a n95 which is one of their "approved! phones so it should just work. Try using IE to go back to the planet 3 page and see what happens with the cab installed.
Yeah, sorry. I wasn't very clear.
If this is installed then the website you are visiting thinks you are holding an N95.
If it is not installed, then the same website will think you are holding a TyTN II.
By installing / removing / installing / removing, etc. You can "switch" between an N95 and a TyTN II
I see what you mean now about switching. Installed and tested and it works really well thanks the difference between 3 HSDPA and T-Mobile HSDPA is amazing dont know what T-Mobile are playing at its so slow!
Glad it's working!
Hi.How did you unlocked your mda vario 3? 'cos ive got the same aswell and i will like to use it for 3 network.Cheers

you do know that t-mobile and 3 now share HSDPA networks so technically there is NO difference
Sub69!!
You are my hero. I have been searching for months to find a 3UK cab that would let me use Windows Live Messenger while I had the 3UK sim card in my Kaiser. The original 3UK settings even blocked the use of Live Messenger while connected to my wifi if I had the 3UK sim card in the Kaiser.
Now you come along and solved all my problems...thank you thank you thank you!
Just a shame that I bought agile mobile a few months ago to workaround the problem, but that's life
Thank you again kind sir.
oops double post
they dont share at the moment, not expected til later on the year. does take a bit of time to set this kind of stuff up! only announced last month!
also works for 3ireland
Glad it's working for everyone. I've certainly found it very handy - Still can't believe that Vodafone and 3 make us use workarounds like this though.
I wouldn't be paying Vodafone £10 per month for MobileTV if I hadn't figured this out, so they'd be worse off. Have to wonder how many new subscribers they'd get if they dropped the restriction entirely...?

Just used this sim unlocker worked fine http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=361039
That sounds great!
Does it work for HTC-P3600/SPV M700 as well?
Excellent piece of work!!! Many thanks
Thanks very much sub69 for your hard work!
Hello everyone!
Thank-you very much sub69 for sharing your knowledge & expertise on this matter!
I have just taken out a contract with "3", and would like to use my unlocked SPV M700 (HTC Trinity) to access the plethora of services I am entitled to as a 3 contract customer!
I was wondering though (as I'm quite happy with my current setup/config of my SPV M700) whether the WM6 version will work on WM5, or is the .dll file significantly different between WM5 and WM6 (as I did notice WM6 and WM6.1 have different versions)?
Many thanks for your help in advance...
Any need to "switch back"?
Dear all,
I am really interested in this file in order to be able to access Planet 3 / Austria. Before installing I have a tiny question, however.
You say:

Now my question is: If Planet 3 successfully can be displayed with a HTC phone (in that way disguised as a Nokia one) - is there any need to switch back to the original HTC-mode?
I mean - does the N95-cab file affect the HTC's other functions in any way?
Because it seems a lot of work to constantly "switch" between HTC and N95, which requires a soft reset as it happens.
I'd be glad if I could just install the N95-disguise on my HTC TyTN II and leave it that way.
Thank you very much in advance!

Stephan

Hi
I havent performed any upgrades to my XDA2i (official or otherwise) for at least 3 years - are there any upgrades I should consider?
Here is my Device Info
ROM Version : 1.11.00 WWE
ROM Date : 01/27/05
Radio Version : 1.00.00
Protocol Version : 1337.39
ExtROM Version : [THIS IS BLANK]
Model Number : PH10C
Also, I am unable to connect to WiFi with my XDAIIi
The device finds wifi signals and sometimes will make a connection - but when I try and open a webpage I get a screen showing "IIS7" and nothing else.
Here are my settings for WiFi :
Network Card Connects to tiacxwin Campatible Wireless Ethernet (for both The Internet and Work).
Power Save slider is set for Best Performance.
Thanks for any help and advice !!!
Paul
I am in a similar position Paul.
I have been given a 02 XDAll by my company to use for recording surveys.
Its bog standard like yours.
I'd really like to upgrade it but the problem is there is almost too much written about it on these forums .Most of it is so old and out of date that all the links are broken. Its hard work trawling through it.
What is needed is a simple basic upgrading overview listing all the options but I suppose everyone has moved on to more recent PDA's and are no longer interested in these
I've posted a similar request in the Himilayer section .Maybe we can share what we find
Nick
Nick, do you have a Himalaya or an Alpine? PH10B or PH10C?
The Alpine is stuck on WM2003, perfectly good for its task just not upgradeable to WM5 or WM6.
As for customising it realy depends what you are looking for.
Hi DeeDee thank you for responding. I feel guilty hyjacking Paul's thread.
Mine is a Himalaya 10B
with following spec
02 XDAll
2Gb SD card
Rom 1.72.00WWE
Date03/15/04
Radio 1.17.04
ext Rom 1.72.18.1
Ram 128Mb
Model PH10B
I just wanted to improve the Active page if its possible .I cannot read the tiny text so large button icons like the Diamond would be useful
I cannot set the Internet access up either ? have tried for hours.
I have a Netgear Wireless Modem router DG834G but neither the manual or quick guide explain how to set up the XDA .
I have spent several days trawling this site and the net.
Any help appreciated thank you
Nick,
No problem joining in - if we can get the WiFi problem sorted I would be more than happy.
DeeDee,
Should my ExtROM Version be completely blank?
Thanks
Paul
Hi Paul
you're up early !
I have used WM5 on an XDA Mini S (Wizard) a couple of years ago. I imagine that most of the current software and apps are written for WM5 orWM6 so it will mean I'll need to upgrade to WM6. Presume that means flashing the Rom which judging by the number of disasters on this forum is not something I'd do lightly.
Particularly as there are virtually no answers to requests for help.
I found a statement last night that basically says unless you are a software developer you arn't welcome on this forum which probably explains the lack of help.
Yours has the 128 Rom as apposed to my 64Mb which is a big advantage. I have gone off the idea of buying a Himalaya or an Alpine as they are too antiquated really which is a shame as I love the build quality and screen size.
I'm going to look for something a bit more contemporary I think . In the mean time I'll enjoy using the works XDA ll
Hi
Flashing the Himalaya to WM5 or WM6 is painless and it has to be said slightly addictive, you will try many ROMs until you find one you like. Think I have tried most of the ROMs for the Himalaya.
The lack of help has NOTHING to do with not being a developer, i'm not one and have had lots of help. The problem is probably due to the lack of people using these PPCs. i have to confess my Himalaya is purely there as something to muck about with, work didn't want it any more. i have a Trinity as primary PPC phone and an Alpine with an application that doesn't work on WM5.
You won't get your Himalaya to connect to your WiFi as it doesn't do WiFi without an add on card.
DeeDee,
Should my (Alpine) ExtROM Version be completely blank?
Thanks
Paul
Hi Paul
Can't remember and my Alpine is at home, but i don't think so.

Thankyou DeeDee I appreciate you taking the trouble to answer silly questions by a noob.
I have downloaded and printed out a 140 page manual and there was nothing clear about connecting to wi-fi
If I have to carry this Hima around with me all day I might as well have it working as well as it can.I had intended to purchase a 3g Iphone for myself but now I'm not so sure I might buy a HTC instead if I can find one with 3.5" screen and wi-fi and a reasonable interface like touchflo
Nick
i have to say the smaller screen on my Trinity is perfectly adequate and that the larger form factor of the Alpine/Himalaya means you need a headset/handsfree kit to really use it as a phone.
It's also not pocketable, which my Trinity is, just.
If you can find a decent mobile shop and have a touchy feely sesion with as many as you can.
thanks DeeDee thats excellent advice. Photos never give a good indication of size and ease of use . The size is a bind like you say its heavy and too big for a shirt pocket but it is easier for me to work with using reading glasses.
I got an 02 XDA mini S when they first came out. I found the screen too small and fiddly and it stayed in the box unused for 18 months when I sold it on ebay for nothing so I have learnt my lesson.
DeeDee may I just ask one other question please. I have trawled through the wiki and various other sources but I still haven'y founf an answer to my initial question on the Himalaya board.
Q1 How do you install a new app on the Hima or Alpine ?
Q2. where does it get installed to ?
Today we lost the special survey App again Grrrrrrrrrrrv because the flippin battery went flat.
My boss is hopping mad and blames me !....I blame IT cos they installed it.
There must be somewhere we can install an App to that is non volatile and is not lost every time the battery goes flat.
Presumably the same place that WM2003 is installed ? How is it done ?
To install an app either:
1 - use Active Sync to install it if necessary
2 - if the install is a CAB file copy it to a memory card and then click it on the PPC to run the install.
As for the where it installs, when you run the installer it may ask where you wish to install, either Device/Storage Card. Make sure both batteries are charging. In all honesty it's not your fault that the end users aren't charging their Alpine on a regular basis.
I have just bought an HTC TYTN II, I would like to install the O2 Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM, I prefer the O2 ROM as all the settings are pre-programmed and the layout are as O2 expect them so I can call them for Tech support.
Unfortunately, I cannot access the file as I don't have the O2 version (the XDA STELLAR) and you need to enter your O2 XDA STELLAR Serial Number to access it.
Is there any kind person out there that might be willing to PM (message) me with a serial number of an XDA STELLAR that I could enter to get the file please.
Hoping someone can help me,
Thanks Folks,
wirralot
PS: Isn't the TYTN II / XDA STELLAR just the BEST phone ever!!
i would just put on a cooked rom from the many out there, first read the wiki about spl etc
the settings are on a automatic send once you install a new rom and turn it on,
as for tech help,i would say heres your guys use the search and you will be fine.
iam on o2 and its fine tryed many roms now and still ok.
TyTN IIs Connection Wizard/network will automatically set it up
The HTC branded TyTN II has a connection wizard which allows use on different networks and in different countries (especially useful if you're going overseas and want to use a PAYG sim for example. Also, as already mentioned, when you turn the phone on with your O2 sim already in it, the phone will automatically set itself up for your network - that's how it was with me and Vodafone. There's no need to go to the trouble of flashing your ROM and should you need any tech support, any instructions for the Stellar are likely to apply to the TyTN II as well. The few times I've spoken with Vodafone staff, their V1615 (vodafone branded version) feedback has helped (they even sent me a V1615 manual so I can compare the two).
ps yes it's the best ever as long as you have the WM 6.0 ROM and don't expect very good video playback!
Thanks for the input guys,
I should be receiving the pda in a day or too.
I believe it's on Windows mobile 6.1.
You say :" ps yes it's the best ever as long as you have the WM 6.0 ROM and don't expect very good video playback!"
Is WM 6.1 not a success for the Tytn II?
This is a great site, full of other people like me who couldn't live without their PDA!
Cheers Folks,

I can only write with experience of the HTC branded TyTN II and their official ROMs here in the UK but IMO HTCs WM 6.1 upgrade for the TyTN II is more trouble than its worth. It introduced many bugs which I'd not noticed or experienced under WM 6.0. These included the default ring tones going silent unexpectedly, untidy file structure with WMP program files being where they shouldn't and of course GPS performance issues (which it appears are also plaguing its successor the Touch Pro). I wrote a multipage letter to HTC about bugs with their WM 6.1 upgrade and their handling of them so in short, no, I do not consider HTCs implementation of WM 6.1 a success (in its current state) on the TyTN II
