Impossible to get gps fix - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

I have used the TD with a golf navigation programme (Mobile Golf Scorer). However, using the gps drains the battery, and after just under three hours the battery was empty, the the device 'dead', so I opened it and changed the battery to a a fully charged spare. The device came back on, everything works as usual - EXCEPT the gps which can no longer get a fix. I tried to get a fix in Google maps (to check that it wasn't some sort of software failure in the golf navigation software), still no luck.
Please, can anyone help!

Try to change the gps settings to:
Port: 4
Baudrate: 19200
My NavigonNavigator 6 works only with 19200.

I sometimes have a problem too that all of a sudden my GPS doesn't get a fix, or simply looses it while driving. Reboot doesn't work. The only way I can get it to work again is with the HTC GPS Tool and give it a cold start.. So I'm going to return it to get it fixed since this happens to me several times a week..

Is this port for the hardware or software?
If one is on com 4 which should the other be set to?

Thanks for the response. I am not sure what you mean by HTC GPS Tool (I am new both to HTC and TD). Would you mind elaborating? Also by 'cold start', do you mean hard reset? Because that was what HTC Support suggested (along with setting speed to 4800, which doesn't work either). But I cannot bear spending another 6-8 hours to reestablish everything, tweaks and all, after a hard reset which would be necessary as Sprite comes up with error messages.

No no, this hasn't got anything to do with a hard reset (thank God lol).
The HTC GPS tool is for download at http://rapidshare.com/files/84815853/Nadavi_HTC_GPS_TOOL.cab and it's discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=360477 .
In the first screenshot in that thread you can see a drop-down box which says "hot start". What I do is to first click the button "open"... then in the tab "sattelite" my problem gets confirmed (can't see any sattelite then). I go back to the first tab, I click the drop-down box, select "cold start", click Nav. Init. click the button close and immediatly open.... et voila, it works again. Sounds quite complicated, however once you've done it a 1st and 2nd time, it's a piece of cake lol

problem with gps?

is anyone else having massive gps problems?
tomtom is setup correctly to use the internal gps but it either tries connecting forever and getting nowhere, or it eventually picks up 1 satelite and thinks im in canada..
I've just put on dutty's rom but was having problems before also.
any ideas?
If you read the instructions...
You have to run GPSTEST first, to lock on, then minimize, then tomtom
Try it outdoors. No, really!
Been playing with TomTom for the first time today. Tried all day at work and it wouldn't work - kept coming up "No GPS Device" at first then switched to "Waiting for Valid GPS Data" or something. Anyway, kept trying with QuickGPS on, put the phone by the window, come back 10 minutes later and still "Awaiting". After 2 hours, gave up. Tried switching the TomTom on in the car on the way home, and within a minute it was happily directing me home (correctly).
Turns out the best advice I've read is "USE IT OUTDOORS OR IN THE CAR." I just thought I knew better and that a large window on the 3rd floor was just as good. Turns out it's not - and I'm an idiot for thinking I knew better than the experts here!!

I have no problem using the GPS inside my apartment sitting on my couch.
GPSTEST just sits with "GPS starting up"..
and like I said, I was having problems before duttys rom.
its absolutly pissing down outside now so it could be that.. but I havnt been able to use tomtom for a few days (including out in the car) so any other ideas?
Are you using the version of TomTom that supports the internal GPS? because if you aren't it won't find the GPS signal.
yes, and I have it configured to use it correctly.. (com4, 4800bps)
so it seems it might have just been the ****ty weather and me being indoors... its all good again

you dont have to minimize it, you can run, lock in, and then close it, then open TomTom...
Also, do not, i repeat, DO NOT play with the external GPS configurations, it can permanently mess up your GPS, and only way to fix it is hard reset...even if you put the settings back to default, it will mess it up...i remember reading this info on the forums, im sure it still applies...but ya said its working so good for you!
oo and also make sure you dont cover the GPS antenna in the back or you will lose signal or get weak signal...

GPS Problems

Yesterday i tried loading GarminXT and it froze. Did a soft reboot and tried again and again it froze. I then tried tomtom, which loaded ok, but could not find any satellite. I was on open sight waiting for 30 minutes. I also tried MioMap and automatically scanned port..."no GPS found it" says. I have then put it manually and the red LED went on...but still, not satellites are found. Red light blinks normally, i just don't get any data.
GPS worked just fine before that happened. I also noticed device to be very slow if i ran any gps program. Any idea what when't wrong? I just did a hard reset few days ago and i only have fistful of applications running.
edit: I aso tried GPSTest and it keeps scanning. When it comes to com4, red light blinks, but that's all. It's looping this scanning procedure. If i set com4 manually it just says Looking for GPS unit
tnx
did you use quickgps first before launching any gps application?
Hi!
I had exactly the same problem a week ago (with iGO, TomTom and GPS Tuner). I've got advice to remove battery for hours (I did it for 8 hours) but did not help.
Finally I found a program on xda-developers or GPS Passion which is developed for maintaning Qualcomm GPS (GPSTool). I do not remember the thread but you can find something like this: GPSTool0813.
When you downloaded that exe copy it to \windows. Execute it. Select sirf. Then select yes (if device is Qualcomm) then select COM4 and Cold Start. Push Start button.
I hope this helps.
i did your procedure, but it didn't help. Even gpstool could not get any satelllite. it did show some data, quickly scrolling, but thats all.
maybe i did something wrong. how long does it have to run?
tnx
i just found out that i, too, am having problems getting a fix on my gps. i opened gogle map and gps tool this morning on my new att tilt but i cant get a lock. i have 4-5 satellites available but can't get a fix...
Any more ideas? I tried BT gps and it worked fine. Got fix in few sec.
tnx
Same thing happened to me and a hard reset fixed it.
ok, tnx. Wil try hard reset today and report.

GPS Problem

Yes, I know, another GPS thread. Not ideal, but search won't allow 'GPS'.
Plus I have searched 'manually' through alot of threads but to no avail. I still have a problem with my GPS. Basically, I can't get any GPS reception. I've tried different ROMs, radios, hard resets, soft resets, updated QuickGPS, run GPS Test, taken battery out, everything I think! I just have nothing. On GPS Test, all I have is a screen showing:
'GPS Starting Up' (Fix 1D, HDOP 0.00)
It just stays on that screen FOREVER. I'm beginning to think I might have a hardware problem.
Can anyone suggest any ways to test the GPS further? I know it's a pain having another GPS thread, but I really didn't know what else to do.
Hope someone has some sort of solution.
P.S. Note to mods: maybe enable 3 letter word searches? Some words are crucial, such as GPS, sim, etc.
In the gps settings on gps test have you changed the baud rate to 4800

yes. i've tried all the baud rates just to be sure. I also get no response in Google Maps. Just nothing. It's detecting that I have a GPS unit integrated into the device, but no signals are being picked up. Does the fact GPS Test is stuck on 'GPS Starting up' signify anything? It seems strange it doesn't say 'Cannot connect to any satellites', or something similar. Or is 'GPS Starting up' the same as saying that? I'm just totally lost.
I should have said, I have been trying this outdoors as well. Not indoors.
Now, this is an extremely long shot. I just checked my battery and my phone. My phone is marked (under where the battery would be) as a DIAM100. The battery is marked as DIAM160. I've seen on the forum before different numbers like this meaning different things, and also different batteries creating GPS problems. Anyone ahve any idea about this? It's so frustrating!

Well to answer your question above my phone also states its a DIAM100 and the battery also states DIAM160 and my GPS works flawlessly.
I dont really know what to suggest to you.
Hope there is someone in this forum that can help.
Good luck
Clean install, QuickGPS data, then run GPS Test...
When you are running GPS Test after a clean install with updated data from QuickGPS only do you get any bars at all? Typically you start with nothing, then yellow bars pop up (and disappear....) eventually turning to green. Need at least 3 green bars to get a decent fix....

I'm not getting anything. It just stays on the 'GPS Starting up' display. No bars, nothing.
I has the same problems with setting up GPS after flashing with various ROMS. The answer was found within these forums, can't remember who but credit to you, simply back up your settings and hard reset. After I did this GPS has worked flawlessly getting a fix in under a minute. Hope this helps.
Forgot to mention AGPS is turned off using Advanced Configuration, available from this forum, and using CoPilot 7.
I've already Hard-resetted multiple time on multiple roms. I'm just getting nothing. AGPS is already off too.
Flash with another ROM... hard reset after FLASHING.... and then start HTC_GPS_TOOL
Last resort, then warrenty return I suspect
If it has never worked since new then it sounds like flaw with the device, and perhaps a return to store...very unlucky. Last resort might be to change your Hard-SPL but thats getting desperate

What should I be seeing in HTC_GPS_TOOL? It is all very confusing. Lots of numbers and stuff. Seems to be repeating a five line sequence. Doesn't seem to be linking to any satellites.

With HTC Gps tool you can make a "cold reboot" of your gps. This means it removes any data in the gps. - Do that, go outside and wait for 10 minuttes. This usualy works for me.
You can get the gps tool on my homepage www.maritime-billeder.dk/htc-diamond.html
Could you possibly give me a step-by-step process of making the cold reboot? Thanks.

Using HTC GPS Tool (latest version best), in the menus select Q7200 for chip, 4800 baud, and COLD restart of GPS....have you had this issue from new? Has the GPS ever worked on your device?
Nothing was working. Getting a new handset from Orange tomorrow.
GPS same problem
evilskanker, I have exactly the same problem. the user "pietrucci" on this forum also sent his device for repairs as nothing helped, not even flashing everything back to stock.
this is SO frustrating and if I can't get it to work I'll never flash any **** like this on my device again.

Which version is the latest of HTC GPS Tool, I was supprised to see you have chip model selection which I don't have. Mine is exactly looks like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOesPtnXP9o
Is mine the old one? No wonder I couldn't get cold start working.
But how come the version you have doesn't have "clear memory" option?
I'm going to give a shot with your version tomorrow since it is too cloudy outside tonight.

can't get GPS fix

Hi,
I'm unable to get GPS fix.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
its the same problem for me...
help is really needed!!!
What software are you using? I had the same problem yesterday after having used it flawlessly for a month now. Had to hard reset and it started working again.
im using GARMIN MOBILE XT. v 4.10.40wp,
this software is be used on TD1, it worked perfectly well
here guys i dont have the diamond 2 but when the fuze or touch pro released it too had gps problem and this is the fix i use maybe it will work for you guys

I had this as well, waited several mins and had no results. Try the below and then things should be all well.
Run the quick gps app on the phone, that will update the phone with the sat positions. Then stand outside or by a window for a min or two and you should get them.
This is interesting for GPS problems http://blog.mohdimran.com/2008/11/htc-touch-pro-gps-problem-tweaking.html
I had problems with apparently non responsive GPS, doing all the mods in the link above has transformed it.
Also, before anything else, if it doesn't appear to work at all, make sure your software is set to look for the GPS device on COM4.
I had tried absolutely everything prior to doing a hard reset. In the end I just wrote it off as one of those quirky little things that makes this phone unique lol.
I had this problem randomly. So I checked the status of the GPS driver using Dotfred's Task Manager (Device Manager tab) (freeware at http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm) and I found that sometimes after a soft reset it was not loaded (why I do not know) but could be loaded manually.
Therefore I wrote a little utility, DeviceStart, to load and start it.
If you have this problem copy DeviceStart.exe in \Windows directory, create a shortcut like this (or use the one inside the .zip file)
55#"\Windows\DeviceStart.exe" Drivers\BuiltIn\gpsdriver 60
and put it in \Windows\StartUp directory.
DeviceStart.exe requires .NET Compact Framework 2.
The same happened yesterday to me.. No way to get it working even after 5 soft resets, the GPS just couldn't kick in. I was genuinely scared that the GPS module broke down. Even after the hard reset it behaved strangely in the beginning, only after quick gps it finally started working. The worst thing is, if this happens again and I'm abroad where I'll really need GPS - a tought of all the hassle with data roaming etc doesn't make me exactly happy.
I'm still trying to figure out what could have caused my gps stopping working. The only thing I can think of was Clean RAM, 3rd level. Is there any chance it was caused by that? If so, would the utility (Startdevice) from 2 posts above start it again?

Who knows! But in that case a soft reset should restore it working.

Check using Dotfred's Task Manager. It can show if gpsdriver is loaded or not and using it you can try loading it manually. If it succeed Startdevice can do it automatically.

[Q] GPS "died"

Hi,
when I wanted to use Navigon the other day it did not get any GPS signal.
When I leave it on the map display it updates like every 10 minutes with somehwere that I passed while driving.
Restarts do not help and also other GPS based tools (like MapFactor Navigator) do the same.
Did this happen to anyone else / how do I recover from that (do not really like to try a factory reset since a) I do not know if it would help and b) I don't like to reinstall and setup all apps again.....)?
Thanks,
KalleH

Similar but not quite the same. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029729
I start suspecting a firmware/SW issue?
Thanks, saw that...but actualy a "short" shutdown (wait 5 minutes) a few times did not help.
Yesterday evening I switched off the phone and only switched it on this morning and ....hey.....GPS working again....
Strange

It got worse for me (see same link above: gps stopped working a few days later)...in the end I hard reset it .... it seem that did it. No more issues since then at least. I do not know yet what caused the gps settings to be corrupted, which makes me a bit nervous since I might have to do a full hard reset again in the future (restoring all my settings + SW takes 2-3 hours for me; cannot root device because I need company access).
Even if GPS is now working since the app update I now have to stop my Navigon app and clear the cache everytime to be able to start it again....
