Battery Life on AT&T vs Tmobile - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi Folks,
Here's an interesting problem. I have two tilts running the exact same 6.1 code. One is on AT&T serivce and the other is on Tmobile. The AT&T phone is running on HSDPA/3G/Edge/GPRS and the Tmobile is running on Edge.
With no calls, I get two to three days battery life from the Tmobile phone and less than 12 hours with the AT&T phone. Turning off HSPDA on AT&T may give me an hour or so more, but no where near the 2 days the tmobile tilt runs.
The problem is compounded by the AT&T signal strength being very low comapared to tmobile for where I live.
I tried disabling 3G on the AT&T phone, with the Commanager, but I'm then limited to GPRS speeds (~64k/s).
Is there any way to disable 3G and still be able to use Edge?

One word, which I will deny you.. HEHE But I will show you a picture of it.

I already searched. The search lead to kaisertweak which is replaced by advancedconfig. Which doesn't help. The other one led to the commanager that will allow me to disable 3G, but disables wifi and Edge as well.
Thanks for nothing.

I always have 3G turned off on my comm manager and I use edge and wifi just fine.
However, each Tilt is different with battery life, which is strange. Personally my battery life blows but I know a few people who have a much better battery life.

3G is a notorious battery drain, so i keep mine turned off (via Comm Manager) unless I really need it.
Do you have the same programs running on both handsets? Same e-mail accounts? Similar surfing patterns?
What happens if you swap batteries? I'm just wondering if you've got a bad battery, but I have to say that I've never gotten 2-3 days out of my Tilt (running on AT&T.

The AT&T phone is running on HSDPA/3G/Edge/GPRS and the Tmobile is running on Edge.

As said above, 3G eats up batteries. Even 3g iphone users complain about the battery life compared to the older iphones.

Funniest reply I have ever seen!
I can tell a huge difference in battery life if I go some place that only uses edge. Like everyone else said..3G drains the battery. Either you want fast internet or you want long battery...have to pick one.

I have switched the phones back and forth and they are identical down to the radio rom and software. I do have the tmobile one running blackberry connect. I went back and forth between the two to see if it was the blackberry connect software that was eating up the battery. The tmobile phone is lasting 2 days with BB Connect software! And I can't say that the AT&T phone is lasting any longer without the BB connect software running on it.
I tried Commanager, but it apparently disable Edge as well. Aftwards, my phone only connected via GPRS.
I found a thread in the Hermes forum for Bandswitch. I'm trying it on the AT&T Tilt to see how it works. So far it has allowed me to disable UMTS/HSPDA/3G and still connect with Edge/GPRS.
If that doesn't work, the only remaining conclusion i can come up with is that the lower signal quality on the AT&T network is what is sucking up the battery life on the tilt.

you shouldn't have a problem disabling 3G and still use Edge. Just turn 3G off in your comm manager. Then try to connect to the internet. If it won't let you connect you need to change your connection settings.
I think you're making this more difficult than it is.

EDGE: 7 days; 3G: 3 days. I try to keep 3G off whenever possible now. Back when I was staying at my old apartment, I had to rely heavily on 3G to get a clear call through.

Have you tried unlocking both phones and swapping the SIM cards? It could be the device, but doing that would definitely tell you if it was the device or the network...

Yes, both devices are unlocked. it's definitely a network related issue. The problem follows the sim/network and not the phone. Both phones are configured identically with the same Radio and ROM version as well.

I was thinking that you might have a bad radio.. Has noone seen that movie?

I suppose it could be signal quality, but it also may be that your radio works better with T-mo.
I've never had an issue using a Comm Manager to disable 3G only. There are a number of different Comm Managers available, so you might try a different one and see if that works. I tried Bandswitch on my 8525 and it messed up my phone to the point of requiring a hard reset, so different strokes and all that...
You didn't mention if you had tried swapping the batteries. I'd give that a shot and see what happens.

I honestly can't believe the battery life some of you guys are reporting. 3 days? 7 days??? Are you leaving the phone powered off most of the time, or what???

If I turn off edge except when I need it I can get 3 days easy.

Update
Well,
Bandswitch helped me turn off HSPDA/3G and still maintain edge. Initial results are that the phone is lasting longer. Not sure by how much. I'll try different commanagers and see if I can disable 3g and still have edge.
I agree that it could be a phone radio issue where the radio works better with tmobile. My AT&T tilt came with a new SIM, but I did not bother using it since I already had a 3G 64ksim already. I don't know if that could be a factor.
I did not try swaping out the battery because putting the tmobile sim in the at&t phone results with great battery life in the AT&T phone....so I don't think it's a battery issue.
thanks everyone!

I am looking for a quick and easy way to switch from 3G to Edge (Yes I have a Tilt on AT&T) from the today screen so that I can conserve battery life most of the time but get to 3G quickly.
I thought that phoneAlarm could do it by profile but it doesn't.
Freeware would be great since I am not looking for anything profile, time or location based but at the point I am open to whatever.

I have working this issue from the phoneAlarm end as well since it seems to have decided to stop working on me for some reason

Have a great weekend!
I did some more testing and the plot thickens (or at least becomes more complicated) I read here that the Tilt changes bands differently than other WM6 phones (although I have not yet figured out how) so I think that may be part of the problem.
I flashed _Alex_ ' s ultra clean ROM and the only thing I installed was phoneAlarm. The phone was connected to MEdia Net in 3G. When I switched to a profile that did not have 3G (selected as GSM in the options) the connection disconnected and reconnected, but it remained 3G.
The same was true in reverse if I selected a GSM profile and reset it would start is EDGE. If I changed it to 3G profile it would disconnect, reconnect and stay EDGE.
I started checking the comm manager (I am using a 10 button comm manager) and the 3G selector would change with the profile although the band switch would not occur.
What is funny is that if I used the 3G selector on the comm manager the band switched with no problem, following the same behavior patter of disconnecting and reconnecting.
I don't know enough to really dig in any further but I will keep googling how the Tilt changes bands and hopefully one of the more technically adept folks will have something figured out or can give me an assist.

3G and edge use the exact transmitted power! (Always on connection is the main problem!) An Ipod uses Edge which is slow. But what the hey, you have a question and it will be answered here...

That is interesting, because I get significant improvements in battery life if I spend the day on EDGE vs 3G. In fact, my battery rarely lasts more than 3/4 of a day with light phone usage if I am on 3G! This experience would see to be pretty common and I have even seen something that says 3G uses up to 4 times as much power as EDGE. This was supposedly the reason why Apple made the iPhone EDGE not 3G.
I am not bashing you and there may some electrical engineering reason why they use the same transmitted power but real life this translates into something different.

One of the 10 key Comm Managers works. I don't recall what thread I got it in but it works fine for me.
HTC changed the old way to change the band in tilt. Now It isnt enought to change a registry key and reset the radio device. Now are needed dark and undocumented api calls to htc libraries. Bandswitch and commmgrpro(bandswitch + profiles) do it correctly.

If Apple could have made it 3G they would have. Steve Jobs was quoted in an interview that the reason the iPhone was not released with 3G originally was that the hardware to make it 3G was not out long enough to be tested thoroughly at the time the phone was being built and tested, not the time it was released. Once the decision was made to go Edge, Apple couldn't release a much better phone within a quarter or two so the incentive to get it out sooner went away. I have it on good authority (rumors in the media also confirm this) that the 3G iPhone will be released Q2/Q3 in 2008. Also, given the popularity of the iPhone and Cingular's small but growing 3G network at the time of release, Cingular was concerned that not everyone that bought an iPhone would have been in 3G areas and would have complained about performance. This is why Cingular has seemingly accelerated the roll-out of 3G-ready areas faster over the last few quarters. This comes from a few friends at Cingular.
If a new 3G iPhone will have battery life as long as the current Edge iPhone (removable battery would be the bomb to carry an extra one or extra capacity, it will be a very compelling unit, despite the inability to add 3rd party apps. And to bring this full circle to the thread, if a 3G iPhone allows 3G to be turned on/off, look out Windows mobile....oh, and removable storage capacity, too, and GPS..., and a good IM program...
Try these Comm Managers. They both work perfectly fine on my tilt.
None of these work on the Dual as it moans about permissions when installing.

I am currently using the dutty black 3G and that works perfectly. What I have done is link comm manager to a button so I can access it quickly and switch as needed. Changing comm managers does not address the phoneAlarm issue since phoneAlarm changes reg keys (according to Bruce) and with the Tilt (and maybe the Kaiser) it takes "api calls" or something else I don't fully understand.
If there is anyone who knows how this works and would be willing to share with Bruce over at pocketMax so he can build this into a update release that would be awesome!

ATT 8925 - Won't see 3G

Hello All,
Been reading this forum for quite a while, 1st time posting. This community has helped me improve my life immeasurably in the past couple years.
I got an HTC Tilt a couple days ago. Unfortunately it's not able to be returned or warrantied. When I first turned the device on it saw the 3G network (or at least displayed the icon; I never had the chance to connect). I navigated to my sd card and went to delete Fieldtest.exe, which I had placed there for ease of use from my previous 8525 (I do some network testing for my job). I forgot and tapped it rather than holding down the stylus and opened the program; the 3G icon disappeared and went to E and I haven't been able to get it back. I've tried clearing the memory and have completely reflashed the device using the HTC retail ROM. Also tried kaisertweaks to enable HSDPA and the bandselect tool.
This is really bizarre. I don't think that Fieldtest.exe could have damaged just the 3G portion of the chipset.. but I'm running out of ideas. I've searched through this forum (finding wonderful nuggets of information as usual - can't wait to try Digitaltigre's method for using the Kaiser, or maybe old 8525, as DiNovo Mini) and others to try to find others with a similar experience and I've done the obvious (reflashing the radio I thought for sure would do it). Besides this the device works great - EDGE connects and is usable, voice calling works, tethering works, etc.
Any ideas you folks can come up with would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks,
Shoehopper
ROM: 1.62.502.0
ROM date: 01/17/08
Radio version: 1.27.14.09
Protocol version: 22.45.88.07H
And I'm in a very strong 3G area (-65 to -70 dBm typically)
did u try changing your rom or doing a clear storage?
I tried both. The ROM I reflashed was the same version as the ROM that was already on it however.
try a different one
are you sure your area is 3G enabled? or at least have decent enough 3g coverage.
try this one addon it's called band select. it adds a tab to your phone settings where it lets you pick auto, regular gsm (G,E), or 3G. You can then force it to be on 3G only. The problem is, if this doesnt work it may mean what you thought earlier that either your 3G chip is messed up or you just not in a decent coverage area for 3G.
i cant find it on my pc, if you do a quick search you may unveil it. hope that helps
using 3g off/on in comm manager works for me or if i wanna get serious i use bandswitch or comm manager pro www.commmgrpro.com

Why is this? Even a secondhand Tilt will be less than 1 year old, and covered by AT&T's warranty.
I tried using BandSwitch, when I pick UMTS it constantly searches for signal (... under the antenna icon and x on the connection icon). Selecting Auto reverts to E.
I am certain of being in UMTS area (Redmond, WA HQ building of certain large wireless organization.. which is also why I cannot warranty or exchange he device).
Thanks,
shoehopper
errr nm i did some homework. Thought i had an answer.
eeeekkkkkkk
weird. I have some bugs depending where i am if the signals are real strong, i sometimes cant seem to leave my wifi on and stream info over 3g AND use my bluetooth. Are you running anything else at ALL. ? in the case i mentioned, i sometimes have to turn off my wifi to get my bluetooth to work.
Maybe some weird bug w/ something else your running?

Found on the side of the road?
fell out of the truck?
Stolen?
It was company provided, which means I'm not out anything personally, but it does have a $ value nonetheless. Being company provided but outside the retail channel, it is not able to be warrantied or returned. Sheesh.. people assume the worst.
I am not running any fancy connections. Haven't even turned on the Wifi or Bluetooth. No programs (besides the aforementioned kaisertweaks, and now BandSelect). It's not that it doesn't connect; it doesn't even SEE that there is UMTS coverage available, only EDGE.
Thanks,
shoehopper
I'd try a warranty exchange anyways, if I were you. (Once you've determined if there is a hardware problem...) Supposedly the warranty follows the device, no matter what channel it takes to get to the current end user. Anyways, that's what I've heard, and it wouldn't hurt to try. Just call customer service and ask for the warranty department.

3G Issues still - Help needed!

Hey all,
I've had my TyTn II for a while now and everything's been ok.
I recently upgraded my rom, from an old Duttys rom to a new one, since doing that my phone would not pick up signal at all - I couldn't phone and people couldn't phone me - it looked like my phone had reception but the second I went to call all the bars dropped off.
I posted on here. - It's the radio people assured me. I swapped radios. 1 million times.
Everytime, the 3g would work for a few hours and then the same problem.
I decided it was the rom. I installed a different duttys rom yesterday, and low and behold, the phone worked. Calls, tinterwebs the works.
Got home. Same old problem.
The one thing that links the roms is they're both Windows 6.1.
I'm using a MDA Vario 3 on T-Mobile UK.
Can anyone help me?

If you want to stick with WM6.1 do as follows:
(i hope you've got HARDSPL...)
Run the TriColor mode and install radio same as i do (signature)
when it start to restarts hold the camera button so you can boot tricolor again without loading rom.
Install your favorite ROM,
When everything is configured, run Connection setup again and restart your phone. Test it.
If it still doesent give anything it could problem with some third party apps or your device itself.
You can try my configuration it works perfectly for me.
Cheers,
Chris
Giving that a go today - will chuck you over some $$$ wonga if it works! Thanks.
I hope that everything will work fine for you. Im always happy to help.
Cheers,
Chris
Tried - No joy - but thanks - anyone else got any ideas?
I have a similar issue. On my 3rd phone now (Orange) due to phone not connecting in 3g mode to make calls. Seems to be an issue where it fails to switch automatically between GSM and 3G, although it often shows there is a network connection (even though there isn't - really anoying).
However, by turning off hsdpa it finally seems (6 hours or so) to stay connected to the network and able to make calls. Can anyone else with the same problem try this?
I don't enough about hsdpa to understand why having it switched on should make a difference, unless it changes the functionality of the radio. Suggestions welcomed.
You may have a faulty handset.
Exactly the same problem as my friend experienced with his MDA Compact 2. I tried flashing new ROMS and it seemed to fix it but in time he'd begin to suffer from a disappearing signal bar and random dropouts before, during and after calls.
You could try turning your network to GSM only and see if that makes a difference. I'm on T-Mobile and I know that last week I couldn't use my phone in 3G mode for 36 hours or more owing to a network problem in my area, gsm worked fine though.
not convinced about the faulty handset although it is a possibility.
I am starting to think that with the hsdpa enabled it somehow changes the way data and voice calls are handled.
Really could do with some opinions on hsdpa and whether enabling it or disabling it changes the functionality of the phone or the interaction with the networks

Just search a bit in the Kaiser forum, quite a few people (including me) have had similar problems. Radio hardware on some units is faulty and requires return to service center for repair.
The radio starts by not being able to send/receive calls/data on 3G while it still works on GSM, then later GSM will eventually fail too.
T-mobile have had problems with there 3G in the last week in northern Uk. I am still getting a few problems each day as you describe. I dont know, but I am assuming they are doing some repairs

Still, my experience is that there maybe faulty hardware out there, but by disabling hsdpa everything is fine. I'm currently making plenty of calls on 3g network, dowloading lots of data on 3g network. My previous problems were when the handset showed it was connected to the 3g network when it wasn't able to take or make calls or download data. Before, the only thing I had tried was manually selecting GSM in the connection settings.
I'm not saying that disabling hsdpa is a good thing or a solution, just that it might help some smart person to identify what is going wrong.
Any help out there?

[Q] who updated the leaked 5.7.893?

Just wondering how many of you have updated the leaked 5.7.893 weather you were bone stock or rooted. Is it worth updating or should I wait for the OTA? I have no intention of rooting at this time.
Interesting to see who is going to wait and who took the plunge.
I'm rooted and rocking the 5.7.893 and loving my Bionic now. Pretty much fixed all my problems except the bluetooth skips, but I'm hoping the final OTA cures that.
Im rooted and at 5.7.893 love it.

If I were to update to 5.7.893 will I be able to get the final OTA whenever that comes around? I don't want to root so I just want to make sure that I will get the final OTA without having to do something other than accepting it.
I don't think anyone can be 100% certain that when the final OTA drops, we'll just be able to accept it and install. If we do have to take some steps to get it, I'm sure the fantastic bionic devs will figure them out. If you're having big problems, install it. If you're not, don't. For my Bionic the update was the best thing I could have done for it.

Listen to Bionicblue's advice. If you have problems that interfere with phone usage, either return it...or do the leak. If you do not, wait for the update path.
There is no assurance using the leak will be able to return to the update path without doing something. Generally updates are tied to some kind of stock. Sure, the awesome devs on XDA do get around to the updates and do wonderful jobs. So root and futurecooked roms will be an option.
But, if you can wait, wait. If you just gotta jump in...do it with a smile on your face...not that one...a real smile. I've been here going on 5years. Never once has there been a failure.
Stock 5.7.893 with webtop. still ocationally getting no network warnings but I think someone said that was a sim card problem and that a sim replacement fixes it.

I did the update from stock to 5.7.893 and love the change. Camera is wicked fast now and over the phone seems a lot more stable. I have the frequent data drops but I had that before the update (tried all of the recommended fixes with no real improvement).

I just started having this problem yesterday, too. I am on 5.7.893 stock rooted +webtop. 3G connects, sometimes, but never turns blue (what is that, getting an IP address or something?) so there is no connectivity. 4G works just fine.

At first I thought it was just a Verizon issue, but my daughter's LG Ally seems to be working just fine on the 3G.
Do you think they're blocking the new radio, perhaps? I would've thought more people would be reporting problems on this forum if that was the case.
I really don't think it's a SIM card issue, because the SIM card is for 4G. The CDMA radio inside the phone is what controls the 3G, to my knowledge.
I'm trying to restore back to Liberty 3 (based on 5.5.886) but obviously that will not downgrade my radio firmware, so I really don't know what that will fix. I will post back with results of that.
EDIT: Restoring back to Liberty 3 on 5.5.886 didn't work. Going to try stock fresh of 5.7.893 and see, but something tells me this is a Verizon issue with the Bionic. Luckily most of the VZW reps have Bionics so they should be reporting the problem.

I talked to a Verizon rep and she said all LTE phones have the connectivity problems and have been slow fixed and that it is a software issue and not the SIM or hardware or verizon.
She also stated that Motorola phones when you pull the battery you should leave it out for a minimum of 2 minutes per Motorola or you are not really fixinf the problem just post poning it when a battery pull is required

So it is a software problem that they're rolling out OTA updates, or that we should try to solve this software problem by doing a 2 minute battery pull? I have kinda been afraid to ask a rep since I have rooted and installed these OTA leaks. With the new OTA that blocks root, I feel like there is some super nerd in the back room just trying to **** with us for getting off stock.
I'm stock, unrooted and installed the leak several days ago. I concur with the feedback given in this thread. My phone is fast and stable and I haven't had a single data drop (I'd only experienced dropped data once or twice since launch day).
The problem I'm chasing now is fringe signal hopping and the leak did not address it. What I'm seeing is that my wife's thunderbolt will easily hang on to a weak 4G signal as my bionic flips to 3G. This isn't a huge deal for me as it only happens a few places in my home yet it's still frustrating. The phones will sit side by side on the same coffee table both with 4G connections and suddenly the bionic flips to 3G.
I'll give credit where credit is due. HTC's latest gingerbread update on the bolt along with a mature radio version has made it a solid phone. Battery life on the bolt is now every bit as good as it is on the bionic. I wouldn't go back to it but it's nice not having to troubleshoot problems on the wife's phone. It just works.

Sometime's something obvious is overlooked, if it's a night time issue verify via battey & Data manager/ battery mode is not on nighttime saver, as most custom roms come with this as the default

Thanks. Night mode was on, but it wasn't the culprit. I changed it to Performance Mode. Data Saver is also already unchecked. Background data is on, Data roaming is on. The 3G is "connecting", and even in Phone Status it says it's connected, but the icon never turns blue.
If you aren't sure what I mean by turning blue, here's what usually happens when the phone changes connection modes. It is consistent through 3G, 4G, and Wifi.
For example's sake, I take it out of airplane mode, then this is what happens.
3G appears next to the cell signal icon. It is white.
4-5 seconds later it turns blue and you can now browse and sync, etc.
Same thing happens with wifi and 4G. The problem here is the 3G never turns blue. It just stays white and no apps can browse.

Did absolutely nothing and it just resolved itself. I think mine was an issue with the Verizon towers and/or network. Hope yours was that easy, too.
luckily mine was that easy too. I texted a friend at vzw and he said he never heard of the issue (obviously since he doesn't fart around with rooted phones and OTA updates that aren't released yet). I told him I was going to come by and grab a new Sim card and last night I tried disabling 4g again just to see what would happen and sure enough 3G kicked in, turned blue, and everything was A okay. Maybe the update just needed a day to settle down?

The official OTA should fix the $G lte network connection loss when switching between 3g and 4g.
The battery pull is for anytime you need to pull the battery for a problem or to assure you are recieving OTA. She also said that if you pull the battery for the manufactured recommended time your device will find OTA faster if they are rolling them out.

Tencent Edition: Loss of Signal?

Hello all,
First post on the XDA forums because you guys are awesome and I couldn't find anything else on this issue anywhere. So I have had my Asus rog 2 for about 2 months now. I got it on eBay tencent Edition for the US. It's a beautiful phone and it works great. However...
The signal bar keeps dying. Whenever I would game (in this case, mobile legends) I would occasionally have my full strength/half strength signal bar go to 0 signal or just none (empty bar or no bar at all) which would not only shut off my data, but it would also cause my wifi connection to disconnect. It takes about 20-30 seconds for it to reconnect which is way too long when you're in a Moba. It's super upsetting since my older phone, the Poco has no issue like this and it doesn't even have a Sim card! I have this Juggernaut phone but I'm forced to play on the Poco. Very sad.
Other gripes with it is the ****ty H+ connection on data. That being said, I am using a Chinese phone in the US so I've just come to terms with it. I have cricket wireless so it is a band that the rog 2 has. My friend told me to maybe flash a new os (global version) and maybe that would fix everything. I'm not sure, I was looking for more feedback. Let me know guys!
Below I have attached a screenshot that gives an example of what I mean.

I have no idea why my images aren't working, so if you need the link to view what I mean let me know. But it's basically just the phone signal bar going from full strength or whatever it is to 0 strength. It goes from saying "cricket" (meaning I'm connected) to no connection, emergency calls only and then eventually back to cricket. About a 30-second process to get reconnected every time.

You're not the only one dude,
https://forum.xda-developers.com/rog-phone-2/help/bug-report-rog-phone-2-restart-wifi-t3985965
But I don't know how to reproduce this behaviour. Mine doesn't seem to do, however, there are a handful of people on that thread where it does happen...
You could maybe report it to asus forums, there doesn't seem to be any answer here... Other than, like you say, maybe flashing the whole device again with a fresh rom. Can't say for sure that would work though...
If you do decide to flash again, you might wanna use this guide and check the video linked in that OP to see how to do it...

I used to have the H+ issue when I was with AT&T but after switching to simple mobile I've been getting 4G ever since. Really any plan on the T mobile network would probably resolve that issue.
Evetyday i have this damn problem
Also wifi with sim problem
