Data protection - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

As my diamond suddenly died last night (no more reaction from it, even after trying to load with the charger for a long time), I now have to send him back for replacement or repair. Concerning the lot of data I have meanwhile stored in the internal storage (mostly encrypted - thank god; with this device there is now SD-card to keep at home when sending it away....), how do you have protected your data against unauthorized access? Some good and quick encryption programms you can recommend?
bye

All SMS, 3xemail accounts & messages MIA

Really wierd.
Vario III ran out of batteries yesterday, (not the 1st time this has happened) and so I left it plugged in to re-charge.
On powering up, all the SMSs had been deleted (Sent & Inbox)
My 2 POP email accounts were not there either.
Windows Live account (Unused) had gone too.
The only change was two apps had finished their trial (FFFriends and FunContacts), neither of which have a messaging element.
The attachments folder on the SD card is still there.
The memory usage on the phone hadn't changed, so the data is probably still there.
Anyone else experienced anything similar?
Any way of extracting the old SMS to a text file (or even restore!) - they contain receipts for London Congestion charges etc - would be nice to retain.
Update:
Re-creating the email account did not come up with "This account already exists" - which is what I was expecting, so it looks like they have gone for good.
Spoke to Jahn (FFFriends Developer) and I'm happy it's not the cause (never really thought so).
Has anyone else had a message wipe-out on WM6?
I never let the battery drain to 0%, so i can't say. It shouldn't delete anything, because when you power the device off, nothing is gone either.
No, it's a wierd one.
I've taken the opportunity to re-build it from scratch - (removing a lot of rubbish!) fortunatly I have all the CAB files on my SD Card.

Not had this myself but others have mentioned problems with a corrupt message store which could have probably been caused with your low battery. This can even disable messaging altogether as it gets stuck trying to load faulty data.
Only suggestion I can make is use a backup package at least once a week. Most of us business users are relying on our devices a lot now and it is only sensible practice to do the same as you would on a PC.
Sprite or Spb software can be configured to do an automatic backup of your most needed files either internally to the SD card or to the Activesync PC AND even to a Network drive.
Soz, I know this is closing the door after the horse has bolted (you have already re-written the accounts so data recovery is going to be impossible) but it may help in the future.
I had Sprite backup from start-up (provided on T-Mobile CD), forgot to install it again after 1st rebuild (once I found what I liked etc), and forgot to re-instate it -Dohhhh
Nightly backup re-instated.

Always best pal. Have a good Xmas and New year..
EDIT: MS thought that a non-volotile memory would solve all our problems on mobile... But! we are still held to a battery that can fail and if that happens on a write process, then.... The 'Kaiser' is not perfect on battery, but for a multi-function device, its not TOO bad. I have had Motorola's that barely lasted a day (Razor as an example with BT on). Always best to take maximum precautions depending on what you have on the device..
Charge mine every night just like an alarm clock at the side of my bed..

Diamond2 is sluggish

This is just a general question, but I'm sure the responsiveness of my Diamond 2 is getting worse. It sometimes takes ages to response to any kind of screen press.
Powering off and back on does make it more responsive.
Wearing my PC support hat, I'd say is seems to be suffering from lack of memory and therefore is thrashing the hard disk.
Does this analogy apply to Windows Mobile devices?
I've checked I've not got any programs running and usually there is nothing. However, the touch-flo applications aren't listed. I assume this is because they are all part of the main desktop shell?
Another observation is that the battery sometimes gets very hot. This is usually an indicator that the battery is being drained very fast. Another guess, but if there is a "bad" task in there, I assume it could drain the battery in this way and use up CPU?
I've got encryption turned on for the SD card. Does this impose a big overhead as I've tried to configure most programs to use the card when possible.
I'm about to back it up and try a cold reset as a test.
Cheers, Rob.
"therefore is thrashing the hard disk"
no wm don't use virtual mem as flash is slow and have limited writes before it dies
"I've got encryption turned on for the SD card."
people should be very very very careful using encryption on sd cards only
if the data being remained hidden is much more important then the data itself
should one use it
have the device die on you and replaced with a new
or even changing the rom will result in the data on your sdcard
being lost forever

I pick up my company email through it so there are some slightly sensitive documents on there.
I don't (and never would) ever keep the only copy of data on a phone!
Cheers, Rob.

[Q] How to secure my phone (Xperia Z) before sending away for repair?

This is a bad week. Yesterday I dropped my Xperia Z onto the pavement, and it got a major damage at the polyamid frame on the upper right corner. It could have benn worse. no display or back glass broken. Oh, and the cover for the headset plug has to be replaced, too. See the sad picture attached. Repair will cost about 112 Euros (and I think another 100 Euros for spare parts) Today my SanDisk 32GB micro SDHC died from one second to another. Completely dead. It's not even recognized anymore, regardless in which PC or Android Device I put it in.
However, enough self-pity, my question is: How do I secure my whole phone from curious repair-workers? My smartphone is essentially full of sensible and private Data. Emails, Texts, Photos, all the Apps with stored Logins (Facebook and the likes).
My first idea is the Android built-in Encryption under Settings > Security > Encrypt Phone. I've never done that, because it says it takes a whole hour, and there is no information about this encryption can be reverted. Because maybe some App stops working, or it makes the whole phone slow. And now the most important question: Is it worth the effort? Is it really secure facing an autorized sony repair staff member?
Secondly I came up with the thougt of doing a backup. Maybe the Repairman calls me and says he has to do a full service test to ensure every internal bit an piece is still working after repair. Which might mean he has to have access to the phone (and the service menu). Since I have encrypted and locked my phone, this can only be done via factory reset. So I should have an complete backup. Has anyone ever tried the built in backup and restore? Does it really backup everything? Every App, evry Data, every setting (widgets and stuff), well plain and simple - a copy of my phone current state? At the moment it only offers me to backup system files and data, might be due to the fact that there is no sd-card and the internal memory has not enough space.
Any other backupsolutions? My phone is not rooted, and rather shouldn't be (warranty issues)

There you go.
But anyways, I'd say root your phone install cwm and do a nandroid backup. Save the backup file(s) somewhere else (not on your phone duh). Then do a factory reset and send the phone like that.

I wasn't sure if my question concerning encryption is right in the Troubleshooting forums. But if so, maybe an admin can move the thread?
According to your answer I assume the aformentioned stock backup solution isn't that useful at all?
What's with the encryption security?

[Q] Broken screen data recovery Z1

Hey guys, first time poster long time lurker here, so hope I'm doing everything right!
So I dropped my beloved Z1 last night, and unfortunately the screen cracked from top to bottom. Its insured so i will be sending it off, but I'm worried that instead of getting repaired its going to be replaced. I want to create a complete backup so if i do get a new phone i can just load all my data on to it and have it running like my old phone.
Usually id use the sony transfer tool for it, but the touch screen has become non responsive and thus i cannot unlock the phone to download the app from the play store. My phone is running stock android and isn't rooted so is there a way to do a complete backup of the phone? Luckily most of the data is on my SD card which I've taken out, but there are still some photos/videos on the actual phone itself which id like to get back, and a couple of unread messages that id also like to see if possible.
Any help will be much appreciated!
Thanks !
Get a USBOTG cable and use a mouse.
Cheers mate! I've managed to find an old mouse and a USBOTG cable and to my surprise it actually works! Now just have to make sure everything is backed up!

[Q] Note is dead and I want to delete memory data

Hi, my phone suddenly died a week ago. It was on, it went off and goodbye.
Samsung service told me they have to "repair the motherboard" for 146,00 euros, so I already bought another phone.
Anyway, I would like to sell the Note even if broken, and I have already the buyer, but I'm worried about personal data: I saved a lot of pictures, files, documents on the internal memory, and now I can't delete them because the phone doesn't turn on.
My questions: is it possible for me to know now, if the buyer will repair the phone, if my data will all be recovered? They will be all there? Or the repair will force a reset?
If I can't know now for sure, is there a way to reset the phone, or just the internal memory, via hardware? Something to short circuit?
I don't want to retrieve data (I have a backup), I want the opposite, to delete them without powering on the phone...
Last chance: could someone show me which is the "16/32 GB memory chip" on the motherboard? If I break it somehow, do I clear the data?
I hope I made myself clear, sorry for my english...

Are you able to access download or recovery mode in that phone?
No, the phone does not turn on (normal boot, recovery, nothing). There is no power. I tried from PC, charger, with battery, without it, and so on.
Anyway, Samsung Service already told me that it has an hardware fault (motherboard), that's why I'm trying to reset via hardware.
Software is not accessible.
Not possible until you get it JTAG ed and working. Alteast and adb connection is necessary.
