Instant Messaging Software - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

Does anyone know if you have to use the OZ_IM client that is installed in the AT&T ROM for the Tilt to have your IM's count towards text messages and not data?
I don't have/want a data plan on my Tilt yet, and I stopped the AT&T software from installing after upgrading my ROM. Does anyone know if I can just install any MSN/AIM/Yahoo client and not be charged data, or do I have to have the client AT&T released?
Thanks.

Try Palringo for IM. I have been using since last an year and working perfectly.... And its free... www.palringo.com

HTC Tytn II + Blackberry Connect + AT&T = It works!

I had BBC 4.0.0.67 working on my 8525, and a couple of days ago bought the HTC Tytn II (Kaiser). On initial startup, using the SIM from my 8525, the Tytn II set up my AT&T data connection. Phone calls and 3G internet surfing worked fine. The Tytn set my data connection to use isp.cingular and I added the wap.cingular connection. I use the wap.cingular connection.
I first tried Blackberry connect 4.0.0.90 which would not connect to the BB server even though I had a good 3G internet connection. I spent an hour on the phone with AT&T who finally said it was a Blackberry problem and they transferred me to Blackberry. I spent an hour on the phone with them, and they concluded it was AT&T. Blackberry support transferred me back to AT&T. The AT&T manager basically said: we don't support a non AT&T phone on Blackberry...and we don't support blackberry connect. I will point out everyone was very nice throughout this over 2 hour ordeal.
So I removed BBC .90, cleaned out all traces, and reloaded the 4(1).0.0.84 AT&T Tilt version from the HTC America site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=327695
and surprise, everything works perfectly on 3G and Edge. Blackberry BES for my work exchange email (synching email, calendar, contacts, and notes) and BIS for my personal email accounts. The Blackberry web browser also works fine.
At my firm I have the option to install BBC or Good. I have Good running but I'm wondering about BBC. Does it work like Good in that there is a separate application running that you need to open for mail/calendar/contacts, and it's not integrated into the native apps? Or is it like using a blackberry where everything is integrated. Thanks!
It's fully integrated into the native apps. BBC creates WM6 mail accounts for my exchange email and personal email accounts, the contacts are in the WM6 standard contacts database, and the appointments are in the standard calendar. All of these (except personal email) are bi-directionally syncronized with my exchange server.
do you have an AT&T blackberry data plan?
Yes. blackberry unlimited
Just one more question - for the corporate email, can you add an attachment to an email that is stored on the mobile unit?

I read this in an article which is what prompted me to ask. What the article is describing sounds like Good, where it's a separate application.... "The new BlackBerry application suite will complement existing Windows Mobile 6 functionality and will appear as an icon on the screen, in the same manner as other third-party applications. Clicking the icon will prompt a suite of BlackBerry applications, including push e-mail functionality, calendar, address book and others, to load. "
Can one run both the Outlook and the Blackberry connect in the same device (Kaiser) at the same time?
Also, I attempted to install BB connect and I was prompted to first disable my password. I could not find a way to do that without first eliminating the Outlook connection to the Exchange server. Is there another way?

My guess is the author was not familiar with the WM6 environment. There is a BB icon in settings and on the bottom of the today screen, but it brings up the bbc configuraton utility. The apps are fully integrated in the native wm6 apps.

If you use BBC to synch contacts, appointments, notes, and tasks, you cannot also synch them via activesynch/WMDC or exchange sync. It's one method or the other. I have not set up a POP account on my Tytn because I have all my personal POP email go through the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS).
I'm not sure if you can exchange sync email and use BBC for email too.

Yes, but it seems like you are limited to 32K or smaller.
So, here's the deal. I also got this to work on my second day of having my TyTN II. I called AT&T and tricked them into thinking I had purchased an unlocked BB from a dealer and they switched me over to the BB Unlimited plan so I could use BES to connect to my corp email. I installed the PC software, and the handheld SW. And got everything working. It started downloading all my emails, inbox and sent. I chose not to sync my calendar until I confirmed it worked.
BUT...
Something very strange happened. Basically, it went thru my calendar, saw all my meetings that were on my calendar for the last week and in the future and started to RESEND ALL THE MEETING INVITES AS IF THEY WERE FROM ME.
So, if I had a meeting that I was invited to next week, along with 3 others. It sent out a meeting invitation through my email to the other 3 participants (excluding the original meeting organizer) and sent it as if I was the meeting organizer. So I ended up with duplicate meetings on my calendar, and it duplicated everyone else's calendar. So people had 2 meeting ivntes, one from me, and one from the original organizer.
Needless to say, this was a big problem. Fortunately, i cuaght it before it went thru my entire calendar, but ti still managed to send out about 40 meetings invites, some to large groups of people!
I immediately removed the BBC software and switched my plan back.
I don't know why it happened. I can't explain it. Has anyone else who gets the new Kaiser-compatible BBC installed had this issue? Or did it work as expected?
I would prefer to get BBC working, but I can't risk having that happen again!

That is very strange. BBC works great on mine and setup without issue.
GREAT news!!! since AT&T has not oficially released the "tilt" I'm assuming that you're using and HTC branded Kaiser, are you using the original ROM or did you Flash witht he AT&T ROM?
I'm eagerly awaiting for the delivery of my Kaiser
Thanks

I am using the original rom that came on the device. It took less than 5 minutes to set up.
Ditto. OEM ROM.
Has anyone used this on Tmobile? I know BB connect works on the Dash, but not on the Wing and I would hate to drop that much money to find out that it doesn't work with Tmobile.
Thanks for responding, I hope this holds true with other carrier than AT&T, I expect to have my kaiser within the next week or so, I'm in Mexico and my carrier is Telcel, I will report back as soon as I try this.
Cheers
Vinny
That's great that it was so easy to set up and use.
One question though....I have been using BbConnect on my 8525 for a while now, and always have difficulty accessing things such as Cellular Video or XM Radio or MobiTV through the Bb unlimited data plan. Usually aI have to disconnect the BB Connect service to access those.
Do you know if these services/apps work with the unlocked Tytn II and Blackberry Connect?
Thanks!
I have gotten BBC to work and I am generally pleased with it except the 32k limit sucks.
I have a couple questions that I'm wondering if anyone else has figured out.
First, my work email shows up in a folder called "Desktop" which is different that the general "Outlook Email" folder. Why is there a difference?
Also, when sending meeting invitations, I don't have the option to use the work (i.e., "Desktop") account, only the Outlook Email account which is not connected. Any ideas how to remedy this?
Thanks!

OZ IM aim tilt issues

Is it me or does the OZ IM client that comes with the AT&T Tilt not work right when you talk to other people?
My friend has the real AIM client on his Mogul and I tried to chat with him via OZ IM and all he sees is blank messages.
I tried Agile and it works great. I have to buy it though, so...I tried the AIM client (from the UK site) and it works too, but it's crap because the notifications are bad and it seems like an old program.
Any ideas?
its bc Oz IM uses text messaging instead of data and the mobile version of aim doesnt support text messaging.
Which IM service you using? MSN, AIM? I don't use AIM or Yahoo, but I do use MSN form time to time. Windows Live works just fine for that, and uses data, not SMS.
I wanted to use AIM. I have an unlimited data plan and that's the reason I wanted to use data instead of SMS. Any way to make this client work? Don't want to buy Agile.

Thanks. I gave the Palgrino app a try, which one do you recommend?
Works!!
Palgrino is working for me. its quick and stays connected even when minimized.
I use Slick. It works really well and uses data.
Hi:
Do any of these have smilies?
I just installed Palringo, and it looks very nice, but no smilies.
Thanks!
PS: I don't mind paying for it, if it has a nice enough interface, and smilies. Palringo looks amazing, it's exactly what I am looking for except for the smilies.
Beejive had it on my blackberry untill i got the tilt. works like a charm for me and it shows notifications and smilies and supports all clients
http://www.beejive.com/wm6/index.php
The problem in my eyes with the applications that use DATA connections instead of SMS, is that while logged in, now my Tilt has to maintain a live data connection with the network.
What I like about an SMS version is that no matter where I am, 3G, Edge, it just works over SMS. True it's not as "responsive" as a data connection, but it's mobile IM. What do you expect?
On that note, since I'm running aftermarket cooked ROM, does anyone have the OZ IM client that the tilt shipped with available?

IM Messenger 'MUNDU' Question

Hey Guys,
I am interested in getting an IM messenger that sends messeges over my internet data plan (i have limited SMS). I am currently using Paralingo, howerver i read today about http://www.mundu.com/internet/messengerwhybuy.php?top=2&leftIndex=1
Does Mundu work on SMS basis or it can send messeges over net?
Thanks
Dmitriy
Being that it is an IM client I would think that works over your data connection.
A lot of IM clients though use SMS to send...
mundu use data. I've tried that software before. Not too bad. I prefer IM+ though. Just don't use the OZ that built in the rom. It uses sms.
I've tried Mundu and Palringo, both worked fine but Mundu stopped working on my MSN Messenger account - it wouldn't connect and kept telling me my password was incorrect (it wasn't.) So, I'm using Palringo, which is nice cause it's free as opposed to IM+ or Mundu.

Windows Live for Windows Mobile....How I'm being billed....

I been reading other threads and i cannot find an answer. I even called att and they were no help.
I installed the windows live for windows mobile version 10.6.0034.0800 fixed.
When i'm using this messenger, how i'm being billed. Data? or Text message?
I have a unlimited data plan, so i'm hoping i'm not being charged per message. Can anyone help me with this question.
Thanks
The Tilt has Oz Messenger on it which has WLM, AOL, and Yahoo which connects via their phone network and it counts as SMS for every message you send/receive. With the Windows Live Messenger cab, it depends actually, if you are connecting through the ATT network then it's considered SMS but if you connect to the net Wi-Fi, no charges except whatever you pay for Wi-Fi (like pay hotspots)
Alemaker
I'm not using the oz messenger with the provided windows live. I'm using another version of the messenger that i found in another thread.
10.6.0034.0800 fixed. version
best way to go then. The Oz Messenger only connects through the ATT network whereas the Windows Live Messenger cab you installed can use either the ATT network or Wi-Fi.That's what I'm using also. Here's another little catch. If you connect using the ATT network(which is then an SMS for each message) if you start a conversation with someone internationally, you are charged international text rates.
Found that out the hard way when a friend in Germany started a convo with me!!

Seriously? I assumed the live messenger cab would use the data connection, not SMS. Does it really send via SMS when on network and wifi when off?

Well....
I'm screwed, thanks for your help.
anyone else ?
Unless they changed it really recently, I tested it-on ATT=SMS, I barely text anyone and when my friend I.M.'ed me from Germany, all those showed on my bill as international SMS-on Wi-Fi=no charges
That's why I dumped Oz Messenger
are you still using the windows messenger cab?
Yup I'm using the exact one you listed. I just try not to use it while I'm on the ATT network cuz I only have the 200 message plan but it doesn't matter to me as alot of times I'm in a area with Wi-Fi so I just disconnect the ATT data connection and connect via Wi-Fi

It's easy to check,
Just start a conversation with someone using Windows Live Messenger on your phone and write down the exact time and date then check your next bill. All data and texts are time stamped on the bill.

So as long as i use wifi i dont have to pay right?
and how do u disconnect the att connection?
correct; and just click on the 3G or Edge icon and a small menu will show up with a disconnect option button, if you are using a cooked ROM, then open Comm Manager directly and disconnect the data connection.

the version of the messenger that i have i believe is the one the one that comes with the new windows mobile 6.1. I know that the messenger that came with my tilt uses sms messages instead of data. I guess i will be using OCTRO TALK.
Any other messenger suggestions?

As this seems to need clarification, I spoke with ATT data tech support and per ATT, when you use an I.M. client directly ( not going to the net and using a web based I.M.) it is billed as I.M. which is text.
If you connect to the net with MediaNet and then go to WL Mobile website or Yahoo website etc. and use I.M. web-based, it is data, but directly connecting with the WLM cab or the proprietary Oz I.M., it is billed as text even though it uses the MediaNet connection.
ATT Tilt here and using the latest WL (10.6.0034.0800 fixed) and .0600 before it. On an unlimited data connection (PDA Personal Max I believe).
I use it regularly and never see any text message usage - I have read numerous postings that back that up? I'm not saying I don't believe what Alemaker is saying, I just find it hard to believe. I've just never had it use my text messages and neither have any of the other folks in my office (7 of us here with Tilt's and all using with IM).
NOTE - If you use the built in OZ IM, yes it will use sms text messages. This is not Windows Live though. It is an app that allows you to connect to the major IM networks. WL is designed to use an internet connection (IE Data, Wifi, etc.).
That's fine-I have seen billed as text them from international I.M.'s and to be honest, the CSR's at ATT gave me conflicting answers themselves, one said data, one said text and one even said billed same as e-mail(data). So that's why I contacted data tech support. And if it truly does turn out to use data-all the better. Just stating what I have seen. I don't I.M. mobile alot to begin with but just I.M.'ed someone using the WLM cab app and will look at my next bill

I agree... What the others are saying about Windows Live Mobile (replaced Mobile MSN) I can't agree with. Windows Live syncs my Hotmail and has a mobile MSN messinger client. And so far I haven't seen it use SMS for IMs.

if you are using that version of WLM then i can garuntee you that you are using data and not text. There are several clients that support WLM including oz messenger that use texts, but the windows mobile version you described definitely uses data.

Live messenger chat on ATT tilt

I've searched and can't figure out what the straight answer is. I have an ATT Tilt and want to upgrade to WM 6.1, however I would also like to use Live messenger chat and hotmail sync. Do both work under 6.1? I've seen conflicting posts about wether chat works- is anyone using it on ATT? I realize messenger doesn't come with the build of 6.1 supplied by ATT.

Thanks it worked!!
Take a look at Agile Messenger too. This uses data rather than text messages to communicate. This keeps your text message count down if you do a lot of "texting".
Too bad Agile Messenger ain't free. And it's dependent on Agile's server I believe. The beta I tried was.
