Am I right in thinking... - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Hi all, sorry for being such a newbie, but...
I want to buy a Diamond locked to the Orange network, UK. Am I right in thinking the following...
1) The only way to get this phone unlocked is to pay for software (As mentioned elsewhere on this forum).
2) Once unlocking software is purchased, it comes with other software which de-brands the phone and replaces the Orange firmware with the HTC original (or at least, a cooked version thereof).
Thanks for all help received !!!
P.S. I did try searching for these answers myself on the forum, but kinda lost the will to live whilst reading page 6 of a 16-page thread, in which people appeared to contradict one another - So I thought I would just ask the experts and get a simple yes / no !

1) Not strictly the only way, but the simplest and cheapest.
2) No, you can leave as is, or you can just put whatever you like in it, and that's whether or not it's locked to Orange...
I'm still locked to Orange (no intention of changing given the great deal I got), and I've already flashed to the latest HTC original 1.93.405.1, I've tried a variety of radios, and am currently back to 1.00.25.05, (the phone originally came from Orange with a 1.00.25.03 Radio).

1. why get a phone from orange and then want to unlock it.why not use it on orange.
2.you can use any rom on here with it locked to orange.i use swiftbl 6.0 and
mines still locked to orange.just follow instuctions on how to flash rom on here.it is easy dont worry about it.

1. Because, obviously, his intention is so.

Hi,
Thanks for all the help.
I didn't make myself very clear above. What I was trying to say was that I am going to buy a phone which is (briefly) used, but comes with a 1-year guarantee. At present the phone is locked to Orange and I wanted to unlock it and rebrand it because...
1) Orange are alot dearer unless you tie yourself into a (min)12 month contract
[Something which I def. dont want to do !]
AND
2) Orange usually (or at least used to) personalize a phones firmware with their own menu system/ icons etc. Which again, I don't want, because the phones original/generic firmware is usually better IMHO.
I was hoping that the unlocking & de-branding may simply have been a case of flashing the phone using existing software - but oh well !!!
Actually, just a thought - the Orange phones do come locked don't they ?

Orange phones are locked, yes. But with the Diamond, it's unbranded so no real need to flash the ROM unless you want to improve upon it's working speed
Flashing the ROM is pretty easy and all the software is free and available on this site in the ROMs section.
Unlocking the phone means paying for an unlock code which isn't usually that expensive.

keep in mind that this will void your warranty too

But with the Diamond, it's unbranded

Is there no way of backing up the original rom before overwriting it ?

HTC TYTN II (not Tilt) Questions

Hello, I am going to buy an HTC TYTN II Unlocked phone. I am now using an ATT 8525 on which I installed the HTC TYTN rom with WM6. I unlocked the 8525 using the Hard/SPL and SIM/CID unlock. My question is, since the TYTN II I am buying will be unlocked, do I still need to do the HARD/SPL and SIM/CID unlock to make the phone work on multiple carriers? I don't think I will be playing around with any different roms on the TYTN II since I heard it is a good rom, so my main question is about the SIM issue.
Thanks, sorry if this is a stupid question.
nope. its an unlocked phone by default if you buy it htc branded, so you don't need to do anything to sim unlock it, it'll just work - just make sure you let it set everying up properly when you turn it on for the first time
If you are buying an "unlocked" phone, it is SIM unlocked. That's what makes it possible to use it on any GSM carrier.
You only need to flash HardSPL (CID unlock the phone) if you plan to flash ROMs. That being said - the HTC ROM is decent, but not up to par with what the pros are cooking up here. I was hesitant to flash, so I used it for the first week. When I started flashing, I never looked back. They take the best from the stock ROMs and improve upon it (particularly in the speed and performance arena). FWIW.
Hey thanks for the clarification. I guess I should consider using a cooked ROM like I did for my 8525, what a difference it made to use the TYTN rom. I know there is a link for the HardSPL, so all I need to do is flash that to the TYTN II and I can use any rom I find, right? What about the issues with the drivers for the TYTN II, do any new roms address those issues? If I flash HardSPL am I then forced to immediately flash a new rom?
Is this the link for the HardSPL for the TYTN II?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679
I don't need to run the SIM unlocker obviously, right? Just HardSPL?
What about SuperCID and Security Unlocker?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=361236
Do I need to bother with this?
Hey there. What if I do the SIM/CID unlock on the TYTN II already unlocked phone? I remember that I had to do that on my 8525 before I could do the HardSPL. In other words, should I do the SIM/CID unlock and then do the HardSPL??
Thanks!
SIM unlock and CID unlock are two different things. If you are buying an "unlocked" phone, it will be SIM unlocked and you don't need to run anything. I wouldn't run anything SIM related (like the SIM unlocker that was released), just so you don't cause an issue. HardSPL (which will CID unlock your phone) will not force you to immediately flash a new ROM...just gives you the option to. Does not affect the current ROM you have on it. So there is no confusion - you should be looking here for info on HardSPL. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334679 If you have any issues with the HardSPL, there are several stickies and many topics related to problems.
I have not used SuperCID or Security Unlocker. As such, there is no need to in order to take advantage of custom ROMs.
Again...don't mess around with the SIM unlocker if you are buying an "unlocked" phone. You do HAVE to run HardSPL before you try to flash a ROM or radio or anything. However, once you flash HardSPL you do not HAVE to immediately flash a ROM or radio.
I highly encourage you to read the wiki and the stickies more than once before you start messing around with this stuff or if you are even slightly confused. The standard ROM isn't so bad that you have to run out and flash the first day if you are not comfortable doing so. Good luck.
I'm getting a locked ATT which I'll be CID unlocking as well as SIM unlocking. What then would be the best ROM to run for the best overall functionality etc etc
Thanks
JG
Hey thanks for the help. I am fairly conifdent about flashing roms. I did it with no problem on the 8525 and it has worked well so far. I guess I will wait and play with the standard rom on the TYTN II and then decide about changing, but I will definitely flash HardSPL as soon as I get it.
Thanks again!!

They don't like anyone to ask about which rom to use because ther are so many, you just have to decide and play around with them on your own.

What is the best religion?
Which is the best football team?
OK the last one doesnt really apply as everyone knows it is Man United but you get the idea. Everyone has their own needs, preferences etc.
Best advice is to read the relevent ROM threads and choose one that sounds most appropriate for your needs. FWIW though Duttys ROMs do seem very popular.

New ROM Questions

Hey, I'm a newb, I've been doing the reading and the searching and all that good stuff. Here's the deal: I bought a new AT&T Tilt on eBay. It was flashed with a new ROM right out of the box then sold (has a Confused Stu ROM). It's unlocked and is working fine with T-Mobile. Now my questions: Do I need to do a SIM CID unlock again or am I good to go? and I'm assuming I'll have to add HardSPL correct? Anything else I should know? Thanks
- Mark
Being its an AT&T phone and has T-mobile on it probably proves that its already SIM unlocked.
The only way to tell if the device is SIM unlocked is to insert another sim from a different carrier.
Its better to be safe then sorry though. It doesn't hurt to reinstall the unlockers.
Same with Hard SPL. I would reinstall. Better off installing and knowing its there instead of possibly havin a bad flash and bricking your nice tilt. Theres a flashing for newbs link in my signature. Run through those directions, installing whats listed and after that no need to do it again. Just keep flashing different roms until you find the one that suites you best.

[Q] Partially Bricked HD7 / Cotulla's HSPL installed

So,
Here is what happened, I've got an HD7 that has been laying around my office for months, it was actually never used and it has never been updated.
Unfortunately I lost my previous phone and I decided to use that one, but... It was carrier locked to T-Mobile and I did not want to either purchase or beg t-mobile for a code.
Next thing I did was to carefully read every post I could find regarding HD7 carrier unlocking and found myself with only one option: Install a custom ROM on my phone.
The phone had the SPL 1.20 so I decided to install Cotulla's HSPL and then install a Custom ROM, but it failed twice to flash the device, once at 20% and then at 80%.
Right now the Phone goes right into the bootloader screen (It does show cotulla's HSPL as installed) after a short load atempt (obviously the OS is only partially installed).
Im looking forward to get advise on how to install the custom ROM and what I might be doing wrong.

well if you can get to the bootloader screen...why don't you install a custom ROM using Task29 ?? that should work...
Well, I tried to install the factory ROM but it fails as well, it always gets stuck at some point beyond 80%.
I was able to install Deepshining ROM, but the sim lock remains... I guess I will have to buy an unlock code. ¿Can someone tell me what is the site site to buy one?

You don't have to buy the unlock code. Call T-Mobile, ask for technical support (bypass customer service, it will take too long), and request the unlock code. Have the IMEI # for your phone available. They will email the unlock code to you usually within 24-48 hours. I did this last month and got the code the same day.

What is de-branding (UK)

Hi,
I have noticed after reading a few threads that a lot of people in the UK are mentioning that they are going to de-brand their N4. How & why is this done? Does deleting all of the applications that came on the phone also accomplish this?
Also, will it make the phone any snappier after doing this and does this count as 'rooting'? Apologies for all the 'silly' questions, but I am fairly new to this.
Thanks,
Sam
I think was they are referring to is to root the device and this would allow you to put a stock firmware on and or remove the preinstalled software that can't be removed without rooting first.

You debrand a phone by unlocking it first (o2 sent me unlock code just an hour ago) , then flash stock firmware over the carrier firmware, then perform a factory reset, your phone will be debranded as if you purchased a sim free version, no carrier crap.
You do not need to root to debrand

Is the un-lock needed tho?, can't you just flash the current BTU if you dont need to unlock? Thanks.
I think you could do that yeah, don't think it would cause any issues with your phone functioning, only thing it would mean is your phone isn't completely de-branded as it would still contain your carriers sales code (I could be wrong here) just my take on it from what I've researched in the past

That depends if you don't mind your warranty being void, you can either unlock the boot loader and flash a custom Rom or, get s-off, which will cost $25 and run an unbranded international ruu, either way your warranty will be void.
Hi there
The warranty is void anyways. I am not too bothered about that. I just want to get rid of Vodaphone presence on my phone and install a fresh copy of android.
Thanks

Ok, I feel your pain, I used to be on Vodafone UK firmware too so I know the bloat your talking about.
I paid for the s-off way myself, but there's no shame if you don't want to, it just makes things a bit easier and you can modify more.
Personally talking i think Vodafone just goes too far with its 'bloating' software and really there is NO need for it all.
What i am rtying to do is to unlock the phone and then install a fresh copy of android (not sure what version yet).
So, first step is to get 'S-OFF'.............. i will see how to get that done....
cheers

Do you know how to use adb and fastboot ? Do you also have your phone drivers installed on your computer ?
Once all that's done, or if you can post the info listed in your bootloader then we can tell you which s-off tool to use, it depends on which hboot you have on your phone.
To get to the bootloader, hold down the power button till the restart menu pops up, select restart, whilst the phone is going off, hold the volume down button, don't let go until your in the bootloader, post all that info on that screen here.
