Basically, they explained it that it stops the phone from searching for GPRS all the time.

It's 7:10pm and I STILL have 2 bars left.
Unbelievable, it would have been finished 4-5 hours ago.

I searched here and cannot find what he is talking about. Can anyone point me in the right direction? (I have the US version with the official rom, and although some of your tweaks do not work, most of them do and are amazing!)
basically, I'm still draining battery power somehow and have done fixes and think that that above may help.
Thanks!
I think you're talking about GPRS auto-attach, but mis-spelled the thread title as GPS auto-attaching.
Anyways, there is a setting in Advanced Config under Data Connections, where you can disable GPRS auto-attach.
Hope this helps.
Yup you were right on! Thank you very much.
Now, does anyone know if it makes that much of a difference?
Be aware that even if you disable GPRS auto-attach then when you do come to connect, and subsequently disconnect, you will still remain attached. Only a soft-reset will return the device to a non-attached state (as indicated by a non-solid G icon).
Mathew
Softreset is not required. Just turn off the phone unit in CommManager and turn it on again (need to re-enter your pin of course). And you will be not attached again.
By the way. It does not even show the non solid (grey) G icon for me when I'm not attached (o2 germany). While I'm roaming T-Mobile it sometimes shows a grey E (EDGE) icon.

Ah yes, I hadn't though of that. It's still a shame having to do this step anyway though.
For what it's worth I now leave mine as auto-attach as since upgrading to the latest ROM my battery life is quite acceptable, and I'm not sure staying detached really helped me much, if at all, in real terms.

Hi folks,
Another quick one... You've probably seen I want to try to disable the phone driver on my BA...
...Can anyone suggest a method I might be able to kill some of the lighting on the BA? Ideally I'd like to turn off the status-LED in the top right corner, and the green and red call buttons too (or any combination if they're not _all_ possible)?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rob.
On the new WM5 ROM's there is an option to leave bluetooth on but turn off the phone "Start -> Settings -> System -> Power -> Wireless"
It's abit of a pain to get to if you want to keep turning the phone on and off all the time, but the option is there till a better solution comes along.
Very handy for long drives using TomTom without anyone calling you.
As for the lights, I'm not sure the flashy lights really use that much battery? Or do you have some other reason?
Hey Percz,
Thanks for your reply...
Interesting info about the WM5 ROM...
To be honest I've been out of the XDA thing for a while; but I've just decided I want to sort my setup out properly now; as part of that I did start to look at the Wiki for WM5 stuff the other night; but it looks like there's going to be hours to catch up on (I couldn't even decide which ROM was going to be best for me to try), and I don't want to risk having a flaky OS and being unable to revert... I'd love for somone to be able to honestly correct me and tell me that it's quite straightforward to select and upgrade to a *solid* WM5 ROM?
Basically I'm going to be using the PDA for Sat Nav 95% of the time now; maybe the occasional other task but rarely. That's why I want to disable the phone - it's not got a SIM card in it, so having to keep hitting cancel when the phone-dialogue pops-up and then switch to flight-mode is getting to be a pain (I use speaker-mounts so would prefer to eliminate any chance of GSM traffic radio interference on the speaker if it's going to be quite simple to do); and killing the lights would be nice too because they're not really required anymore and a bit of a distraction in a dark-car.
Thanks again and regards,
Rob.
Hmmmm...
Foolishly enough, I somehow hadn't noticed that the thing stays in flight-mode after a soft-reset once its set? I guess the short-of-average day fiddlin with pootas at work has got me looking for problems that aren't really there.
Having to set it once after each hard-reset is something I think I can live with *sigh* heheh
Still, I'd very much like to kill at least some of the lights... Mainly the green and red call buttons, I'd like to lose the status LED too really; so there's no needless glare of lights in the car at night; but I guess it's sort-of useful as an 'at-a-glance' charging-status indicator...
Thanks again,
Rob.
You know you could do what I do with my GPS unit.... Masking tape!
Seriously, it works and doesn't require any hacking.
If it was me, I would leave a SIM in the phone and just disable the Phone in the option i mentioned, saves alot of hassel that way. Plus you have a spare SIM 'just in case', or add TomTom Travel later on.
Just a question though, why not buy a dedicated TomTom unit? They do a neat little unit that's about pocket size now, they advertise it for motorbikes but it's really quite neat for walking around high streets with it in your hand.

Having a SIM in there would be useful for the TomTom extras of course... Something to keep in mind certainly. For the time being I'll just use Flight Mode to keep the thing from nagging me - Going back to your mention of WM5 (and slightly OT); how've you found the ROM you're running in terms of general stability and feature(/bugs) - particularly with TomTom, but in general too - any headaches? - would you recommend the upgrade to someone who wants to use the device as I do?
In terms of having a dedicated navigation device; I do quite like some of the units available, but the next time I'm investing a chunk in my sat nav setup will be to either install my long overdue CarPC or maybe even swap-out the Centre Console in my car for a double-DIN version so I can install Audi OEM nav (CarPC being a bit wobbly)... I just want to get the PDA to a 'tidy' solution until that point (I guess towards the end of summer).
Thanks again,
Rob.
Folks,
Recently I upgraded my phone from 8525 to Tilt. Overall a great device but there are few quirks but I guess you cant have everything. I have few questions which I tried to find answers for but couldnt.
1) Is there a way to manually turn GPS on or off? My GPS was working fine but after I installed Map4PDA i think it changed some GPS COM port settings etc. and now none of the Satellite programs such as MS Live Search or Google Maps work. Everytime i start any one of them they cant communicate with intermediate driver and the application hangs. When i kill the app, the GPS hardware i think remains on (the orange LED keeps blinking) and the device becomes ridiculously slow. Remedy is to soft reset the device but its a PITA. Besides, now I cannot use any of the navigation software. If I hard reset the phone i guess it will restore everything back to normal but i'll lose all my customization which i really dont want to. I guess there are backup programs out there but not sure how good they are w.r.t. restoring system state and even if do restore system state, i may have same problem with GPS. So whats the good way to control GPS functionality, change settings etc.
2) Is there any way to leave LCD on while you are on the phone, backlight can be turned off. Currently its a pain to bring up LCD when you are on the phone, you have to use some hardware button to turn it on, not really ideal. I dont want to turn off power save completely for obvious reasons. When i was using MS Live Search and using GPS, it kept the display on all the time even though i was on battery which I think was a bright idea.
3) I use Slide2Unlock and with 8525 i could use the hardware navigation button (the rocker switch) to unlock the phone but with Tilt it doesnt work, any way to get that working (I should probably post this question in S2U thread).
IMO # 2,3 at least should be registry-tweakable, just need to know which one. GPS question might be hard to crack but I hope some of the experts here would be able to provide an answer.
Thanks in advance, there is a great site!!!
Sam
I will answer #1 - Map4PDA will kill your GPS. I posted about this last week with no replies. Unfortunately, my only option was to hard reset my Tilt. I searched til my fingers were down to the bone and found nothing that revive my GPS. I could see that it was turning on, but it wouldn't turn off again after using Google Maps (or any other program, for that matter).
In the end, hard reset was my only solution. Too bad, cuz it's a sweet program that will let you use Google, Yahoo or MSN maps, plus I like the neat speedo.
.:Christian:.
Too bad I didnt come accross your post before I installed that stupid app, darn! Thanks for the insight but that means there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
Hi!
i am new here, and i do have a problem.
I have my HTC Diamond since 2 weeks, and it is blocking (freezing) once per day: the device is on standby, i try to turn it on, but nothing happens, always a black screen, not even the restart button works; the only solution is to remove and put back the battery.
the issue is that if someone calls me during this "freeze", he gets that my phone is ringing; but i get nothing; and not even a missed call after i succeed to turn it on.
- ROM version: 1.93.479.3 WWE
i highly appreciate if somone can help me with this problem.
thanks,
Tony
htc diamond freezing with white screen
Hi,
i have a similar problem - but not so often (approx. 2 times per week). The difference to yours is, that my screen is white (or gray/dither). My firmware Version: 1.93.407.1 GER (there is no newer)
Have you found any solution?
Guys....have a troll thru the Diamond section......you should find the soln there.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=428
Moved to Diamond/Diamond..
Me too.
Panosha: 1.93.405.1 WWE Shine On 2.4 Full
Radio: 1.03.25.18
After calls... Freezes 80% or more. I don't know if maybe it is 100% of the time when the other end hangs up first. (I don't get it with Voicemail!)
I also get freezes some other times. I don't think it is memory related, (before someone suggests it.) Also Please don't tell me to Hard Reset. I have Hard resetted to my heart's content, also directly after every Rom Update (to get GPS working)

I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2 where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.
Hi guys!
I have a big problem with my G1. I purchased it in eBay from other user, and it has normal scrach in the corners.
The phone came with standard firmware (1.0) so I made a upgrade and rooted it. I've it in Cyanogen 4.2.4.
*The first problem is the battery performance, charging full it runs on "stand by" almost 7 to 8 hours, maybe 2 o 3 calls of 4/5 minutes, 2 or 3 SMS and no more...(all turned off:GPS/WiFi/BT/low backlight)
Right, I bought another generic battery from eBay, and it was worst! It runs about 5 hours on stand by...
I tryed a lot of things, reading about battery issues of other users and made a battery reset (dischargue it until the phone doesn't turn on and then charge it to 100%, x3 or x4 times). I've installed "Advanced task manager" to stop all the apps in background and the problem continues...
Comparing with a friend's G1, I found in mine G1 the "Spare parts" app from Cyanogen Rom, in the tab "battery history" where said "time spent without sleeping: 97%" and the my friend's G1 is about 10% max... so, this indicates that my G1 is doing something that I can't see because it's warm when I carry it in my pocket. (in "spare parts" appears that twice batts are Health:OK)
I tryed taking off the SD card, and nothing.
I tryed a hard reset, and runing some days without installing extra apps and nothing, the battery performance is veeery poor!
*The other problem that the G1 has, is when I take off my pocket (is warm) to answer a call or simply do something and the screen turns black! I see the backlight but nothing appears... I should press many times the "end call button" to make the screen back...It happens a lot of times around the day...
I don't know if this problem have something related with the battery issue.
I likeee a lot Android, but the @$%&# G1 is a troublee, I'm soooo bored with it!
I'm thinking that this issues are a hardware problem, I dismantled the G1, carefully and all were ok, none of the flex that communicates the boards seems bad...so I don't know what to do!
Pleeease help meeee!!!
Thanks all the people that take time to read and answer it, I appreciated!!!
I'll be pending for your answers! =)
[Sorry for my baaaad english, I'm learning. ]

EDIT: I've 5 Google Wave Invitations, if somebody want it, plz tell me and I'll give it to you!
Turn off Auto Rotate so your accelerometer isn't always on. You could turn off syncing too.
Upgrade to a 2.0 ROM, I've had great battery life.
Your english is fine btw...better than many Americans...
Thanks Deathwish238, for your help! (tks too for your comment about my english )
I already have the Auto Rotate off and the auto syncing too.
But now the battery issue is not the "important" problem...I'm having a lot of problems with the screen, I should push the "end call" button about 10 or more times, or change the battery reperdly and finally works. But, imagine if you want to anwer a call or make an urgent call!!! I couldn't!
I'm so bored with this issues, I wanna throw it!!!! But my love for Android is more! XD
I wanna fix it, but I need to know what is the problem...
check that your backlight isnt staying on whenyou close G1 - that would drain the battery fairly fast - easiest to check in a dark place - just look between screen and keyboard
might not be the issue but worth checking
cqms13, thanks for your comment! =)
I checked that before, and no, the backlight is not staying on.
I'm worried about the heat of the phone when I carry it in my pocket, the phone is doing nothing (and all turned off too, just the cell radio) and is so heat when I pull off from the pocket... That could be the origin of the problems with the screen and the low performance of the battery...
How can I discover what's generating the heat??

I've been running this head unit that I purchased from ebay for almost 3 months, close but like a week away. It's kinda ok, but still kind of junky for what I paid for it. I clipped the hinges off, so the screen would stay open all the time. I didn't want the motor burning out and the screen getting stuck inside. Every time you turn your vehicle off, it shuts off, when you turn your vehicle on, it comes on. Even if you turn your key back to ACC so it stays running, as soon as you turn the vehicle on, it restarts the HU. I even tried running the red wire straight to the battery, same thing, then I attached the red to the yellow and straight out to the battery. It stayed on when the vehicle was off, but when I put the key back it and started the vehicle it would still restart the HU. It's like restarting your phone every time you used a different app. That's what it feels like any way. I'd turn off the vehicle and pull the key and leave the HU running, and then run into the store real quick, come back out and turn on the vehicle and the HU will restart.
The other issue is that it lost GPS signal almost a week ago. I've tried google maps, the system app speedometer and several other GPS apps and it's gone. I double checked the wire from the HU to the antenna on the roof and everything looks fine. I even factory reset it twice to see if that would fix the GPS.
I have contacted the seller several times about the things that are wrong with it, and they just give me one sentence replies that aren't even answers and the return period is over. Overall, it does what it's supposed to. the baked in apps work good enough. The car dvr is limited, but it works. the audio player is fine, no issues at all with it. Bluetooth and phone connections are good. I just really need GPS, that's the main reason I got it. Wifi is horrible. It will not connect to a source outside of a 5 ft. range and that's with an external antenna.
Any help or suggestions or comments, anything would be appreciated. What make and model is this HU? Is there a way to root it or to install a custom rom? Any way to fix the GPS? Thank you my friends, I really appreciate it. I've been a member of this site for many years, and I know that when you guys want to help, you will.
I love when I can stump you guys. You all think you're like know it all geniuses, but now and then I throw something at you that leaves you dumbfounded. This is one of those times. I win.

That kind of attitude isn't going to make anyone want to help you is it.
You haven't provided enough information about your unit for anyone to be able to even attempt to help you, more information is required, such as is it px3 or 5, is it mtcb or d/e. Best thing to do is take a screenshot of your about page on your device, the one that tells you the build number etc...
For your boot issue, if it's wired correctly check factory settings (pass may be 126, if not you'll have to search), somewhere in there is an option for auto power off.
GPS, try another antenna? Is the antenna inside or outside, does the GPS test app find any satellites? Is GPS enabled etc?
More info will help, the attitude won't, these forums also have a wealth of information, searching and reading thoroughly will often find you what you need. Yeah reading a 100 page thread is soul destroying but sometimes it has to be done to find what your looking for
