I was wondering if there is a good VOB file player around. Something that allow me to watch a full DVD on PPC. I just got myself an 8GB microSD and would love to try to watch a movie on my Pocket at high quality.
Or Do you guys have something to suggest me so that I can watch a movie smoothly?
The tilt's processor would never be able to decode a full resolution VOB smoothly...
Why try to play a 720x576 file on a 320x240 screen? Recode it, in high quality but in the screen's resolution....
double post - delete
Absolutely!!!
a VOB file would never work (well its damn unlikely)! Rather re-encode, keep the resolution at 320x240 so its the tilts native resolution and use a high bit rate to keep the quality high, thats ur best bet
What program would you recommend to re-encode?

Currently I am using CloneDVD Mobile to create movies in DivX format (making them around 800~900kbs). I am also using TCPMP to view my movies that are on my MicrosdHC 6GB card. They play pretty good but I do get some video jumping from time to time...
Has anyone used other formats, is something else other than DivX better? Perhaps a iPod format (but is there a Quick Time for WM6)?
What about WMV and the Kaiser, I am thinking it is not better than DivX, anyone tried DVD's converted into WMV?
are you making them 320x240? when I scale down a regular divx movie that starts out around 700 megs and turn the resolution down to 320x240, they work perfectly for me.

Yes I am making them fit the Kaiser screen and it's pretty good viewing (matter of fact my kid is watching a movie now on my phone, CURIOUS_GEORGE).
It's just sometimes I get a little pause (~ 1 second).
hrmmm. which player are you using?
TCPMP Player RC2 I believe. There a better Divx Player?

The commercial CorePlayer, but it's only marginally better (as of now, at least), when it comes to plain DivX. Not so with more advanced formats like H.264, where CorePlayer is MUCH better.

What is/uses H.264?
i use pocket divx encoder to encode my movies...they look great
Just bought coreplayer, it does play my Divx files better.
I use DVDshrink and FAIRUSE. It compresses my movies down to around 300-350kbps avi file. They look and sound great.
i used Encode360 for my zune, appears to work well with my kaiser
I use pocket divx encoder (PDXE) and CloneDVD mobile. I've made hundreds of movies for my PDA's and have found that 320x240 with total bitrates under 500k play and look excellent, even on my 4" VGA iPaq4700 and Archos boxes. The difference between 475-500 vs 700 or more is minor and you just have bigger files and sometimes jerky playback with the higher bitrate settings.
I have TCPMP and Core players and they both perform the same with these, TCPMP has more plug-ins for streaming vid like youtube I believe.
Just my experience.
I'm trying out dvdfab at the moment and was wandering if someone could provide me with a brief summary of the best types of file to convert the DVD to - pros and cons.
Also, why is coreplayer usually recommended over WMP to play movies on the Diamond?
Thanks in advance,
S.
coreplayer:More formats supported, depending on the version, better acceleration support.
it's all down to personal preference really.
I tend to rip my dvds to 640*x resolution so that it is as full screen as possible, but due to the small screen, i keep the bit rate down as you really can't notice the difference most of the time. however, on my athena, i ended up increasing the video bit rate a little due to the big screen!
i tend to aim for around 750kbps bitrate for video using either divx or xvid, and 128kbps mp3 for the audio. tends to give a file size of around 512MB which allows 7 or 8 on the 4GB storage, depending on the exact file size, which is different every time.....
others may have other preferences of course....there's bound to be other threads about this in practically every forum here, so have a good look around, try a few people suggestions and pick your favourite.
Some people will go for quality every time and end up with higher file sizes, some people like me will happily sacrifice a little quality (which is barely noticeable if done right) and go for having more films available!
I usualy encode movies at 320x240 with a bitrate around 700kbs, usig xvid or divx and 128kbs sound. It gives great quality, even though the resolution is only 320x240, but it will stretch automaticaly and you'll hardly notice any loss of quality because the size of the screen is not too big. it's like you would play a regular divx movie (576x????) on your desktop monitor at a much higher resolution. You won't see much loss of quality. And @ 320x240, the file size will be around 300 to 400 mb.

I think, it´s a big difference between the resolutions. Yes, a movie 640-480 takes much space, but it´s so sharp, that it makes much more fun. I ripped some concerts to my diamond, and one of them in 320*240...it looks not really great.
Thank you all for your replies. Like you say, i'll have to play around with settings myself, but its nice to have a starting point through other's experiences.
I'm guessing that watching an average dvd movie will totally drain the battery? lol...
Spb Mobile DVD
Is great for converting most types of video.
Very simple to use - plus a great feature is that if the movie is in wide screen format, ie - 16:9 , you can crop it and stretch it while restraining the proportions so none of the screen space is wasted.
You can adjust the quality , and you can preview the final quality of the video before you convert it , you can finalise the file size according to the quality you want.
I tried the rest , and stuck with this.
Use core player , you can play anything with it , even FLV files which you can download/rip off youtube.
You can use the new free version of real player for that
Ripping movies to 640*480 does offer greater qauality, but its takes too much space, since we are stuck with a 4Gigs, 320*240 is more than adequate.
IT doesnt make much of a difference, converted video anyway has lossy quality.
ive been trying to download and play video podcasts on my g1 but every video player ive tried wont play it. im assuming its something to do with diffrent AR than the handset screen. is there anyway to play video podcasts on the go?
bump?

We need more information... Can you give us links to the video files you're trying to play? It really wont work properly unless the video is 480x320 or less and video bitrate is < 768 kbps. As for aspect ration it really shouldn't matter if the res is smaller than the g1 screen.
so there is no android equivalent to say vlc which can set the video size to fit the screen?

No, there's no Android equivalent to VLC.. The problem isn't so much the size or aspect ratio, as the codec (video format). Android can't handle many formats.. h.264 is the only thing I know for sure. And like the other poster said, have to keep the bitrate low. I've managed 768 before, but it was unreliable (would skip, hang if I tried to jump around a lot). Probably need 512 or so to be safe.
so is there a decent free video podcast player? i want to watch the ted talks which are in mp4.
thanks guys
Hi,
When i try and watch my divx films through tcpmp or via divx player thye are always very jumpy. Anyone got any ideas?
Welcome to the kaiser, you're bringing up pretty much the first ever complaint about the phone.
There are many things people do to try and solve the problem. Search them out and see if any work for you.
Have tried differant roms, different players and also differant video drivers
Those are the sort of things you put in the original post.
what size are the movie files, format, etc.
600mb avi files
convert the files to the resolution of the kaiser screen 320x240 or something.
RIGHT, geez mine are about 200mb MAX, and it runs pretty good.

Same here use AONE FLV to AVI MPEG WMV 3GP MP4 iPod Converter don't be fooled by name will convert anything to anything & get about 200mb max files keeping audio bit down, rez right for output, one thing has to be correct is framerate as hate 2/1 effects.
What are you guys using setting wise in handbrake for endoding your movies. I'm trying to do regular profile normal it looks like. I select the mp4 container, and basically start the process.
Once I try to play it on my tablet, it doesnt work. I tried rockplayer and mplayer...nothing
Just your basic 1080p mkv movies that are 7-10gigs I'm trying to basically convert to 720 or whatever so the tablet can do it.
I would really like to know what the best setting to make the smallest files is. I want to fit all my kids cartoons on the G.Tab with out taking up too much space. And with out losing too much quality.
480p would probably be sufficient. The tablet does support 1080p, but probably not without hardware acceleration (which isn't supported by android 2.3).
480p watching cartoons your kids probably won't notice. and you'd gain a lot of room.
