quick question about the email and data on my tilt - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

hey whats up everyone. i just had a really quick question.
so ive had my tilt for about a year now and i love this phone. i didnt get the plan since im on my parents plan. so i dont have the unlimited data or anything. and ive been using the modaco program to prevent unwanted data usage on my phone since im not on the plan. and i only connect to the internet using my home wifi or the wifi at work or school.
my question is installed the touchflo 2d beta on my phone and i just got curious as to trying to use the cool little email feature. and so i set up my gmail. and i was wondering if this is strictly data and not text? i dont have a text plan on my phone. so im hoping that someone can let me know if this uses data or text to show up on my touchflo 2d home screen.
sorry im sure this is a pretty dumb question. but any answers to this question will help me out. i just dont want a ridiculous text fee at the end of the month lol. thanks everyone.

Hello deehrockz,
By text, you mean sms, right? If so, then the answer about using Gmail using text is no. In pocket outlook, it should only use the Internet, so you should be safe so long as you stick to Wi-Fi hotspots. Hope that answers your question,
Dave

Problem w/ OZ Instant Messenger

I'm not sure exactly whats up with my phone, since you can't change any of the connection settings under OZ...but when i try to sign onto aim, it keeps saying "communications error. please try again or check your settings. IM is not supported over wi-fi connections" the funny thing i'm surfer the web right now, checking email, but for some reason i can't sign onto aim. any ideas? thanks in advance
you can surf the web over wifi but oz manager does not support it so even though you are connected to a wifi network it will not work.
thats the first thing i read...i'm not using wifi, i'm using AT&T network...so, again since there's no settings in the oz instant messenger menu...anyone have any guesses?
This phone is just a piece of Paper Weight
Mod Edit: Keep It Cool.
turn ur wifi off and it should work fine
Since the user says they are not on WiFi I really dont think that will do much. OZ IM is hit or miss with the Tilt. In my expierience its either hit or miss. I dont even use it now. I either use BeeJive or IM+. They work great for using IM on a data connection since you say thats what you're using.

anyone use the oz messenger cab?

anyone use this at all, from the time that i upgraded my rom, even when i first got my phone w/ the oem tilt rom, it has not worked. I changed the settings on my phone because initially the internet wasn't working, but not it works fine, i'm using palingro...but i at least want to try the oz because there are some things that bother me about it.
and by the way, i'm connecting using the att network, not wifi...as that is the first thing it says when its having trouble connecting. but honestly, no matter what i change in my phone, i'm still getting the "communication error. please try again or check your settings. IM is not supported over wi-fi connections" error.
any help/ideas?
gotten quite a few views, any input guys?
heya sim,
I use the OZ cab, both stock installed on the phone and installed with custom rom. I have experienced the situation you detail. It seems to happen when I close it down a way it didn't like or do something internet-wise with another program.
Fixing it usually only requires a quick turn off then turn on. It does get annoying sometimes when it happens.
Also I would like to add it doesn't seem very responsive as far as receiving messages goes either. Like sometimes I will get a message on my computer at roughly 12 in the afternoon and will not see it on the phone until after dinner. I have even had a couple experiences where I didn't receive messages until after the program had been restarted.
I will be trying another messaging program soon that doesn't use up messaging on my phone, this is part of what I believe makes it slow is the fact it uses messaging instead of internet.
any recommendations? / questions?
oh great...you mean to tell me that the oz messenger is sms based and not internet based? jeeze...i REALLY dont wanna pay for agile
yes this is what they told me at AT&T, There are a few out there that use internet via data connection (3g, hsdpa, etc.) agile being one of them...isnt it free tho? The same goes for Fring, and i believe IM+ you have to pay for but uses data connection aswell.
Yea, i use the OZ one, but only as a way of checking my current buddy lists in AIM and Yahoo. Its very unreliable for actually carrying a conversation. Also, its very clunky to use if you log into 2 or 3 messengers at once. One of the features about this phone that really made me want it (instant messaging on the go) has been pretty lackluster to me. I have yet to try any different messenger suites yet.
Ill let you both know for sure how the others work in comparison as I intend to try a couple other non sms bases ones
OZ messenger is LAME.. go to Palringo.com from your phone. Download it. Way better and its free push to talk built in.
you guys wont be disappointed with Palringo. You can have your AOL, Google Talk/Jabber, MSM messenger, yahoo. It signs in really quick about 2 seconds, gets all your friends, no drops in connection, Beautiful software and best of all its free.

mine ALWAYS drops my aim connection. i have no idea why. It keeps my google chat online constantly though, but not aim. anybody know of a sms based messenger for aim by any chance?
ok, i guess the problem w/ my messenger was the data package that i had with AT&T, now that i upgraded, i can sign on. only problem is, when i'm online...i'm not really online. it shows that all my buddys are off, when i check on another computer (different SN) if i'm on, its says i'm not. anyone know what the hell this is about? it seems like one problem after another w/ this....
plus i'm using the "OZ_Instant_Messanger_at_t_AKU_0.4.4" cab. thanx in advance
Agile
I have dumped Oz because it is slow to connect at times. At times it connects but it does not tell you so, that is you show up on a buddies computer but your phone still shows that it has not connected. Also, in this case if you quit the program, (stop it from memory) you are still logged on. Added to this is that you get charged for text messages!!
So, I have gone to Agile, which is data only. It connects fine too. It is pricey but it does the job. I am using it on a Treo 750. My service is At&T. It also does PTT etc.
AIM
The AIM client also uses data only and not SMS. So if you do not need the other message servers like Yahoo or MSN or Google etc. then AIM might be a good option. You can find it on this forum.
I had been using the OZ client on a trip earlier this month for the first time - did not care for the SMS integration of it at all. Every time a reply would come in you'd get a system SMS message. I've just installed the Palringo client listed above and it seems to work very well. Thanks for the heads up.
I use slick it's easy and free
yea wish i had read this thread prior to sending those 100 sms messeages at .15 cents each. Wait employee discount! oh **** not for sms. hahaha
gdit at&t!!
gonna check out one of these two you guys mentioned, that oz one does suck
and i have unimited data only.
I really wish I read this before paying for IM+. I like their service but have had a lot of problems lately when I flash roms constantly. Crap like always having to put in my resistration and then saying that my registration number is being used. I would understand if I stole the software but I paid good money for it.
I tried aglie and really like the GUI, but I'm not in the mood to spend that much money for another program.
I just downloaded palringo and from first impression really like it. The only thing I don't like is that it won't keep my always connected. Battery isn't an issue and neither is data.
I hear that. Im waiting and watching for something better.
BTW super rocks!
How about Fring?

I've had great luck with fring... Use it and if you twitter it has a built in twitter interface that's outside of the normal IM integration, it's pretty slick.

Preventing automatic connection to the internet

Im a new owner of a MDA Vario III from T-mobile and for the first month of my contract iv got an unlimited data plan. However, this runs out in a couple of weeks and i wont be re-subscribing to it.
Currently my phone connects to the t-mobile internet very often, for e-mails, weather, MSN etc when i dont want it to. Is there any way of making my phone ask for confirmation before connecting to the internet?
Also, when im in a wi-fi hot spot (am at university, so most days) is there any way of making it auto-connect to it and download everything then?
thanks guys
you can use KaiserTweak or Advanced Configuration to change the settings of how they connect. and no there is no way to get the WiFi to pop up like that unless it is running constantly which would be a major battery drain.
Damn KDKobes you beat me to the post while I was refreshing
hey how come iwasn't told that we are having a posting contest ?

Att tilt - built in AIM client, wont connect

hey everyone, whats going on? Well i received my tilt a week ago, awesome phone. I recently added unlimited texting to my plan, so i wanted to make use of AIM, the built in client. I keep trying to connect and i am always receiving an error. I tried going on ATT's site and send the internet settings, because i think i changed, my bad. But there website is currently undergoing maintenance, so im stuck.
Does anyone have an idea to get my aim working?
I tried searching and didn't find a definite answer
Thanks again everyone,steve
if u have a data plan, i would use the aim mobile.
http://mobile.aol.com/aolproducts/aim-for-windows-mobile
but remember, it uses data. and runs a little slow without the drivers.
sorry i dont have one
I had the same exact issue and couldnt find any solution, so I just use aim mobile.

MMS but no Data

Hi, is it possible to disable all data access on the G1, but still be able to send and receive picture messages? I need to know within 12 hours as I am going away then and would like to use picture messaging but im not paying data fees, please reply asap
Thanks.
Tucka
no, it isnt. MMS requires data.
thats useless.every other phone i have owned can do this!
Technically, every other phone you tried this on still left some data access open if you were able to send/receive MMS. MMS is definitely sent via data.
I would just get a widget that can quickly turn on/off your data and just turn it on only when you're downloading a picture message, and then turn it off right after. Note: This will still use your data network cuz as they stated above, MMS REQUIRES data.
I know it requires data, but what I meant was every other phone is able to use the data to send mms and not charge you for data usage. For instance, on tmob flext in the uk you get pic messages included in allowance whilst roaming, so this feature i guess is just redundant on the G1 as you would be charged substantially anyway.
Never mind Ill leave the G1 at home and go back to my N95 for two weeks.
Thanks

Like I said, just get a widget that can quickly turn on/off your data to send/receive MMS, its roundabout, but I don't think I could go 2weeks without my G1... even with an N95 to keep me company.
but how much data could i expect to use in that 2minutes? im not paying a penny for data usage so i dont want something like that
eh, I know what you mean, even my old Sony Ericsson could do that. But eh, I guess these smart phones are so reliant on internet they don't know how to d/l mms w/o connecting the entire phone to the internet...

useless aint it? from no bluetooth file sharing to not being able to send mms without full data, this phone is proving to be good at advanced but [instert profanity here] at basics
actually, you have bluetooth sharing with an app called Bluex. your welcome.
i have bluex lol...however no built in app and I had to pay for it so I class that as the phone having no bluetooth file sharing, so somebody had to make it
eh, I know what you mean, but i'm on Hero build, so I don't even miss it haha.
lol...well im off on holiday so will be back in 2 weeks on forums
