Just out of curiosity, How fast does your Kaiser (tethered, DUN or ICS) download from the internet?
I felt pretty privileged that on Black Friday I was able to watch net-flicks over the internet via my Kaiser. Are you so lucky? Do you have an internet speed horror story? Are your pings reasonable?
ATT- Orlando FL (DUN)
HSPDA/3G - 250ms avg pings to google.com (~2.3 mbit/s)
EDGE - 500-10000 pings to google.com (~0.5-15k/s)
Phoenix 1.03 with recommend radio
Please give your general location, band, mobile operator, speed and avg pings to a large low latency site. Also radio, rom and any other information you think might be useful.
Give it a test an let us know: http://www.speedtest.net.
Well I'm not sure about the pings, but...
T-Mobile...Edinburg, TX (deep south tx)
EDGE...avg from 20 kb/s to as high as 27 kb/s while connected to my desktop via ICS and using a torrent app
PDA Ultimate v12 with Polaris Radio 1.59.44.02
Using epc.tmobile.com instead of wap.voicestream.com
Lexington, KY - 2.5 Mbit down, 300k up, 250 ms average with WiFi -ICS connection (WMWifiRouter)
/
USB - ICS connection 1 Mbit down, 300k up, 156 ms average google.com
I did not test edge speeds
Edge Speedtest.net I get about 800k down and 300 up
3G Speedtest.net I get about 1.2MB down and 1 up
HSDPA I typically get about 2.5 down, not sure about the up.
Oh, and that's with WMWiFiRouter. Not sure about the USB connection as I typically felt that it SUCKS.
Highly Sub Par for HSDPA here
I did some speed testing while using Internet Connection Sharing the other day and the best I could get was a download speed of around 100 kB/sec and upload of around 43 kB/sec - far slower that I was expecting given I'm only half a mile or so from the networks cell tower and receive a very good 3 or 4 bar H signal. Note that these are kilo Bytes per sec as displayed by the speed test application and Internet Explorer when later file downloading (not kilo bits).

For 'consistency' sake I tried this website (they even had a server about 5 miles from where I am) but the results were even worse than I expected: 153 kb/s download and 274 kb/s upload with a ping time of 185 ms. This thing is supposed to go up to 3.6 Mbps download speed (according to HTCs website specs) so something isn't right.

I if you are using this website I would recommend the Chicago, New York or San José severs. These are the closest to the main internet routers and always provide me with the best speeds. I can almost always max out my connect to Chicago. I live in Orlando, and I cant even get a good ping to my local server.
I reach full 3.6mbit speeds, with pings as low as 80ms to Google (speedtest was 120 IIRC)

Does anyone knows what's the actual wi-fi speed, wich the Kaiser is capable of?
If the hotspot speed is 25 Mbits/s etc., will the Kaiser suports that?
Can anyone compare the w-fi speed with SAMSUNG SGH-i600, on the i600 according to http://gsm.mag-city.ru the speed is approx. 1 MByte/s?
Thanks
Tried your posted site for speed test, but it's all in Russian ??? Anyone know of a mobile site for comparisons.
Use that url directly on the PDA device it will detct the speed via UMTS/HSDPA or WI-FI:
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
Ok I got 140 Kbit/sec and a .686s latency from The Netherlands on T-Mobile 3G.
You should not use 3G when testing the Wi-Fi speed.

oops missed that bit, got 1003 K/bits on that.
Is it rue that the wi-fi speed available on the PDA depends from the CPU speed?
Davebravey, how fast is your WLAN accsess is it as fast as the TYTN II WLAN adapter or faster (than 1003 Kb/s)?
My main connection is 6Mb/s - 768 Kb/s ADSL, Using a 54G WiFi AP and I was less than a meter away when i done the test.
Can you do the same test but on your PC web browser?
Is it reporting the same speed?
I mean the same speed as the TYTN II?
Doesn't work on my PC web browser, connections too fast
Choose the option "larger file->1 MB"
still too fast
OK thanks, anyway do you think your PDA is brawsing with slower speed than the one wich capable of-6Mb/s are enough suitable for the TYTN II's wi-fi?
I find it a little slower than my laptop when connected to the same router.
Happy to find this thread as I'm seeing problems with wifi speed on my Kaiser. It works ok when you're right next to the AP but speed quickly falls as you move away, say 10 meters or walk around the house if you look at the Wifi menu the level quickly falls and the speed drops down to 1Mbps (about 140kbps on dslreports). This is not the case with the old PDAs I have hanging around like the Axim X50, HTC Galaxy, HP 6915 or the Qtek 9000. And yes I pushed the wifi slider all the way left for maximum performance.
I'm suprised that no review (at least those I found) mentioned that or maybe it's my unit that has a problem. The "x" is shot on the keyboard so I need to have it changed, will report back with any improvement.
The good news is that HSDPA speed is good, 500+ on dslreports and bursts at 800+ using GPRS Monitor, but that won't help if you're abroad.
Why are you all so bothered what speed you are getting? LOL
You hardly need fast access for browsing or even streaming a video
Not sure why you bothered posting this, but obviously I bothered to post because it's a problem to me, like not being able to stream a 160kbps MP3 file where I usually do it with the old HTC Galaxy. Now if we can get back on topic ?
hello yall.
I'm experiencing the same problems with my kaiser (vodaphone branded v1615). i'hve checked my bandwidth being at 50 cm ob the router and and i've an average of 700 kb. being in my bed (approx 4 meter) it falls at 300 kb. The problem is that i can surf on the web being on my bed + i can't run viewerVnc to control my desktop. Anyone has any idea ?
Which connection to my laptop gives the highest internet speed on my laptop?
(T-Mobile web'n'Walk: Down max. 64 Kbps/Up max. 16 Kbps).
BT or USB-cable? or is it the same?
If you are using a Kaiser, and have 3g coverage it should be a lot faster than that (like 15 times faster)...
I think BT runs at about 1mb per second - so if you have HSDPA - it will be about the same speed and thus neither will act as a bottleneck. If you don't have HSDPA/3G then it really wont matter.
Hi!
thire is an application on my Kaiser CD called 3gnetopt.exe, does this help to make the Kaiser a high speed modem?
If so, how is it installed?
Of to do some RFM-ing now and a search for 3gnetopt.exe here at XDA!
OK Got it ! here

Thanks for the answer... I won't spend to much time any more on practical tests.
I have a Vario III and I have 3G/HSDPA but ....T-Mobile limited the speed to Down max. 64 Kbps and Up max. 16 Kbps.. ....but the good news is that with this Web 'n' Talk Pocket Internet Totaal they do not have any "fair-use-policy"
I have the ATT 8925 and I use it to tether to my laptop.. Normal internet browsing is fine but for downloads of any size or for internet video including Flash it does not.
When downloading I average about 20kb and than anywhere from 1/4-1/2 the way through it just stops and times out.. This happnes on all downloads 100% of the time..
When trying to watch any form of streaming media including flash it will play for a bit and than stop and won't buffer any more of the media. I will have to reload the page and even then it's not guarunteed to work..
I used to have the 8525 and could watching streaming media through orb on my phone and computer with no issues.. So I'm wondering if it's the phone or if its the network.
I live in the north Seattle, WA area and am using Duttys Diamond rom.

This sounds like you're on EDGE and not on 3G. The other issues are linked, EDGE throughput and latency are highly dependent on network usage as data has low priority. If someone needs to use the tower you're on to place a call, that can put your connection on hold for minutes.
I've had to use my phone as only internet access for nearly 2 months, no 3G coverage where I live so I do know well enough what to expect... and would gladly do without it!
I am on the 3.5g network and HDSPA as well.. I notice a huge difference when I go back to edge in just page loading times.. Like I said page loading works fine.. everything else is crap.
My first suggestion would be to try flashing a different radio. I tether frequently with my Tilt, and I have not experienced these issues on AT&T's 3G network. My tethered speeds regularly exceed 1mbps.
On a side note: Make sure the proxy box is unchecked under MEdia Net, if that is what you are using to tether.
The box was checked... I'll see if it makes a difference when I tether again tonight.
Heres the specs using speedtest while on the 3g Network
IP Address: 32.157.xx.xxx (AT&T GLOBAL NETWORK SERVICES)
Last Test Date: 7/6/2008
Total Tests Taken: 1
Fastest Download: 96 kb/s
Fastest Upload: 112 kb/s
Average Download: 96 kb/s
Average Upload: 112 kb/s
I still have some issues when I go to stream or download where it will get like 30% through and than just time out indefinatly.

what is the signal strength like? the more bars your have the stronger your connection...therefore the faster your speeds.
Full signal strength.
Could this be some configurations issues? The network in the Pacific region? My plan it self?
Edit:
My page-loads are slower with proxy server off. I can try posting videos if you wish?
Removing the proxy did enable the weather plugin in Dutty's build to operate correctly.
Check out one of my earlier posts. I ran a test from Speedtest.net and listed my results.

I will try that radio when I have a chance to dl it tonight.
So I talked to ATT yesterday and they said it may be due to all the buildings in Seattle that the signal even if it's reporting full bars can still be degrading from bouncing around the buildings? Is this true?
Using this radio Radio
This is the result of my new speed test
Doing some more testing I'm finding out some more things.
1) My ping fluctuates between 200ms-700ms.
2) My ul is usually greater than my downstream.
3) A lot of times it says my test is originating in California.

Whenever I run a speedtest from my work or home PC, I always get routed to the NYC test server. But when I tether and run the test, it wants to route to to somewhere in the Midwest. I just override it and select the NYC server, so I would suggest you manually select the server closest to your physical location.
Have a look at my work's internet connection... minus the company name.
I still average speeds between 95-300ish.
I talked again with ATT today and verified I have the 3.5g network where I am.. I'm actualy in the heart of the network. They recomended changing the device. Now I just need to know how to get it back to the default radio, rom and spl.

Hi:
It's in the WIKI.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=335568
I have never flashed my phone, so I am not an expert in that sense, but I believe that thread will give you the info you need
I found that thank you.. I'm still trying a few different radios with varying results though. I don't think I will replace my device I'm not that happy with it anyhow. I want the touch-pro when it comes out.
I finally got the speeds up to what they are supposed to be. I'm using Nikki radio 1.65.24.36
I connected my Tilt to my laptop, and, using Internet Sharing, did speed tests on three different sites. I am using HSDPA. I am in Little Rock AR area and connected thru Dallas TX
Ping varied from 168 to 222.
My download speed was 1134 kbps.
My upload speed was 319 kbps.
Did I actually get the connection speed of my Tilt? Is this a good test/and results for the Tilt?
It sounds like that would give an accurate reading of your device's speed, but if you want to be sure, this thread has an excellent, free application to measure your speed in kbits/s.
Dave
I'm not sure what the situation is, I've tried different radios but it seems like my download speed fluctuates from 100 kbps to 3 mbps downspeed but upload stays at a constant 1 mbps.
Radio is 20.2811.30.085AU_3805.09.03.27_M
Kernel 2.6.35.14-UNITY-V9
ROM Virtuous Unity v2.39.0
Anyone get the same thing? It's weird wifi works perfectly fine.
Data speeds vary depending on a few factors:
1. Your radio.
2. People transferring data on the same network/tower as you
3. Your signal strength.
4. Applications running data transfers in the b/g
5. Bandwidth limitations of the websites servers your downloading from.
6. Many more randoms (weather, website traffic, interference)
As for your upload speed your carrier has a cap on that so your not being data whore.
I should have been a little more specific with my situation
I'll run multiple speed tests with speedtest.net and one may come out at 1 mbps another will come out at 300~ kpbs and another will come out 3 mpbs. I honestly find it hard to believe bandwidth available within the network can fluctuate so quickly. My signal strength is full bars constant, no applications are running in the background when running the speedtest. I'm supposing it could be my radio that's going bad? I'm not sure :X Trying to update to the radio Radio 20.4802.30.0822U_3822.10.08.28_M ran it through bootloader and it gets to parsing the file but after that nothing. Any ideas? I've edited the text file to fit my bell incredible s and I'm on eng s off. Hmm...
Trust me data will go up and down like crazy.
