Hi all. I am on the hunt for a decent Task Switcher app that will work with WM6.
I used to use Wisbar Lite and loved it but it looks yuck on WM6 as it forces the older (WM5 Close Icon)
What I need is Something that I can launch with a button and will show all the running apps in a pop up window and allow me to switches between them by tapping on an application icon in said pop up window.
And it must not change or add anything to the start bar.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jules
pBar
have you tried the pBar application that is around on the forums? it's freeware and was based on the old wisbar. seems to work well, but i don't think i am using a full wm6...just the beta ish...or wm5 heavily skinned wm6....
do a search and you're bound to find it...

I'm running a PDAviet WM6, it has this in it's ROM. Tap and hold upper-right corner.
I love it when I can answer my own questions
After searching and using a bunch off apps and not having any luck I just tried Small Menu and It works 100% in WM6.
Meets all my requirements
More news or problems as I find them
Jules
gspocket magic
best app that does all you want
Thanks for the replies.
Vilem. please can you elaborate on that?
I am using Davit ver 3 and have not seen this app.
Sandrobber. Thanks for the file, I have tried the app before but it doesn't match or look good on the stock WM6 start bar. am I missing a setting or something?
So far SmallmenuPlus is the winner for me.
Jules
I have to say, people I know that have been running Crossbow for a few months, have found SmallMenuPlus to be great.
On an unrelated note, I've run SmallMenu pretty much since I got my first WinMob phone, and can highly recommend it. It's not perfect, but it's very useful.
PocketMagic is also a very worth (free) contender.
I don't use Wisbar (resource usage....) so can't comment.
V
Does anyone know a way to exclude some applications (activesync and phone) from smallmenuplus task list?
Killing the phone process during a conversation or closing activesync during a pc sync can be really dangerous/disappointing.
No, I don't think you can, hence my "It's not perfect"
Try writing to the author, he's still active, although the app only seems to get minor updates these days.
V
I've been using Dinar HandySwitcher 2.5 from DinarSoft for a good while now. It has the decided advantage that you can also remove the application from memory, or all applications from memory, right from the main screen. Most times the only way to clear applications is through the start/settings/systems /memory route or a hard power down.
It's not free but it is cheap, easy and effective. Don't know if it runs on W6.
Trying it now.
Works fine in WM6.
Thanks
pocket magic
you can chenge the pictures of the start bar in pocket magis but it takes some enginutity and time. your have to edit the bitmap. Play aroung with it enough and I'm sure you can make it even look loke a vista button

@ZaJules,
Which taskswitcher did you settle with in the end for WM6?
Hadn't seen this thread, thanks for bumping it up . So I'm trying SmallMenuPlus and this seems like a really nice (and fast) replacement for Wisbar Lite. The one thing I miss though is there is no soft reset in the menu. I like having that ability to do a soft reset via the menu due to the case I have doesn't have easy access to the reset hole on the side. Anyone know how to add this?
Also, does SmallMenuPlus not close apps when you press the X? Does it just put them in background? Can that be configured?
SKmenu
Skmenu is the one for me. Its not free(for the cascading menu part, which can be deactivated! ), but the taskbar switching works 100% with the demo. I have always used it, its very light, and its accessible 100% of the time= very quick(response speed is the issue i have with the rest of the apps mentioned). Although it doesnt come preconfigured setting it up takes less than a minute, and its easy enough for any level user.
The best solution for me. I also use an Alt-tab application mapped to a hardware button for easy access, like when driving etc...
about taskswicher
sry my poor english
Since 2004 and IPAQ6340 until today wizard/universal/hermes WM6 I have used HaaliTS TaskSwicher-2002.
Lives silently in upper left corner, shows additionally free battery and memory.
Dont needs install, copy exe, make shortcut, all )
Perfect for me and my friends (~25-30 units).
Have tested all here overmentioned progs, but find it best. Small footprint, etc.

Exactly what I needed!
Yesterday I flashed my S730 with Alcalines WM 6.1 rom, and I have to say it works awesome! I also like the new task manager because of its option to view all running processes. But for some reason, I don't get the option 'end process' on the left softkey, a feature I've seen on several Youtube videos.
I've spitted through the windows registry without any result. Does anyone know how to enable it? Or is it a function available on pre-production devices only?
.CyberBrain
yups
I got the same problem.
Ending a proces should be very usefull for me.
I use pocketplayer and sometimes de app is closed en de proces not, then I have to reboot, otherwise pocketplayer wouldn't start again, couse the ram is full.
iff this problem could be dissolved, it would be nice.
greets,
Niels
ps: should I get an english training?
I've exactly the same 'problem' with activesync. When I unplug the USB cable from my phone, the sync application is closed, but some sort of active sync process still runs with 2-3 MB of valuable ram in use. I can only kill this process by rebooting the device.
And at least your English is understandable, so it's good enough ;-)

Use some of the better task managers. Celetask for example.
Whats the deal with the RAM usage on the Diamond. Its getting to be a joke sometimes. After using the phone for 2 to 3 days, i have to switch it off just so the memory usage can drop back to around 60%. Its seems after using the music player, picture viewer and anyother apps the phone decides that it does not want to release the memory after they have been closed PROPERLY and doesnt even allow me a facility to release manually.
Am i missing something here ? Before anyone asks - yes i have closed programs properly and there is nothing running in the background (that i can see) but the usage jumps from 60% to 80% causing noticable lag.
Any help appriciated.
use a taskmanager and free the ram. i get with it 35% free ram (72 megs). you can close cprog and sip.
I use FreeUP Ram from SKTools but it´s not really good.
Normally i´ve got 60% used RAM and after using the Prog 57 % .
But I think that 40 % free RAM are enough?
whoops i mean i got 35% in used memory. the rest is free. sorry. sk tools is ok but doesnt help much. with the taskman you can close cprog. it seems to be the cache or something. if i had start a program. the cprog task gets bigger and bigger. i can close it without any error. and have a lot of ram. was sip or something is i dont know. i closed it too and no error.
Ok those points seem fair however my problem is that i cant actually see cprog or sip in my task manager. Im using the default one. Their are (apparently) no programs running....
Which taskmanager do you use ganxta?
Ther is no "SIP" running.
Only SIPGT_app.exe
Is it the same?

Both are not programs running; they are process running. So you can see them changing from menu > view > "application" to menu > view > "process" (sorry if the path is not correct, but my task manager is in spanish.
Then (viewing "process") you could see cprog and sip, but you won´t be able to close them. You only can close programs running, not process.
Yep i understand its a process but thats the problem im having i guess, i cant actually get to the process list. The task manager only has two options (not including the About) - "Stop All But Selected" & "Memory" - When i navigate to memory there isnt much i can do - its just a break down of whats in use.
So i guess i either need a new Task manager or can someone point me to which menu or program i need to access to get to the processes.
Task manager Info -
The version is: 2.1 Task manager for Pocket PC (Build 34563)
ROM -
1.93.405.1 WWE (The original from HTC)
Never mind I have found a really cool Task Manager tool - much more comprehensive than the crappy one provided with the phone. You can get it from: http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm - pretty nifty tool.
So back on topic - WHAT is CPROG? It’s taking huge memory space so I’m reluctant to close it. If I can get any real information on the process, that would help me make a more informed decision whether to kill it or not.
Thanks for your help so far guys!
Edit:
Cprog is actually related to the phone portion of the PDA so its best to keep it running lol. You can close it but you'll find that when you want to make calls etc, it will run it self.

About Cprog... exactly; it´s is related to phone. If you close cprog process, the phone still be working but WM will not show the signal icon at the taskbar (you will be able to make an receive calls).
Everytime you make a call, cprog will be loaded in memory again.
With no programs running, how much memory should be being used? Mine says about 37% with no programs running. I have the Sprint CDMA version. I'm trying to figure out how to get the most battery life, so I'm trying everything I can.
Wow! Mine uses around 60% of the memory! When I start it up, It's around 50-55%, and after a bit of usage, it goes up to 60. After like many apps launched, and properly killed, it's around 64-68%. When I start feeling some lags, a soft reset cleans it back to to 50-55...
Of course, no program is running when I check this.
Any best practice in mind to maintain it as low as possible?

My Diamond shows after fresh start around 52% too,and after usage it goes upt to 70%
When I tried to stop cprog process, memory gone back to 51% but I was unable to recieve call, the phone doesn't show incoming call, even when caller hear ringing in his phone
i have a similar problem on my verizon touch pro. it has the same amount of ram as the diamond, so cprog.exe eating up 11mb of ram is a big deal to me. anyway, i disabled the dialer skin using the advanced configuration tool. the dialer looks ugly, but it's only eating 1.5mb of ram now.

I am not really sure, whether I understand your problem correct, but it might be a quite normal behaviour when quitting a program by hitting the X-button on the top right.
In this case the software is not closed at all, it is somewhat paused, it goes to background. The reason is to speed up changing apps, but it wastes memory.
I think, one possible solution might be HTC X-button. I don´t use it, you have to test yourself.
My favourite is pocket-nav, a taskmanager in form of a small additional flash on the right side of the X. On tipping that flash, a popup opens, with to nice features: Close all or Close all or but active.
Each of it does exactly, what it is supposed to. Fine.
So everyone has four choices: - fast changing apps (on tipping the progs name), -closing single progs (hitting the X behind the name),-cleaning memory totally or -cleaning the rest of the memory, but keeping the last used alive.
I hope this helps. When I am wrong, sorry for that.
my souliton was flash to another version, concretely athers 6.1...its work perfectly...but thanks for your ideas and respond...
This Right Here Is Revolutionary!!
Have you ever been out and about, and checked your task manager and saw that Activesync has started up randomly, and is running in the background sucking down your battery?
Then this is just the program that you need!
ASKicker is just a few different simple scripts that I molded together.
What does this do?
Well basically this program scans a registry location on your phone that tells your phone whether you have a USB cable plugged in or not.
Based off of that information, if you do not have the USB cable plugged in, then the script will close out of ActiveSync everytime it runs. When you plug in the USB cable (Or place the phone on a dock), ASKicker will then open ActiveSync and wait for you to unplug the phone from the USB cable so it can kill ActiveSync from running.
This should not affect push mail. I do not have nor use push mail, so everyone that uses it, please give me feedback if it does affect it. But according to everything I've read online about Activesync and push mail, ASKicker shouldn't bother it at all. Infact, that's part of the main reasons why I've created this solution.
What are the requirements?
Only two things are needed:
First and foremost you'll need this registry location:
HKLM\Software\OEM\USB
"Cable_In" "0"=No "1"=Yes
(My Vogue and TouchPro Have This,
So I'm Sure Most Of PPCs Have This!)
Secondly you'll need Mortscript.
You can get a copy of this
and the manual and a few examples
at the Download Link in my FAQ(Link In Signature).
Tested On:
* Touch Pro (CDMA) - Working
* Vogue (CDMA) - WorkingNotes:
This Is Still In Beta!
There are two shortcuts that are created in the start menu.
The first one is "ASKicker"
This shortcut will either start the script, or if it is already running, it will ask if you want to end the script.
The second one is "ASKicker Settings".
With this shortcut, you will be able to choose a few different things. There is an option to open the Instructions and ReadMe documents. You're also able to turn on and off the AutoOn at StartUp option(Default On). Aswell you're able to choose the amount of time that the script waits to run again, you're able to choose from either 5,10,15,20,25,and 30 seconds (Default 15).
**Please keep in mind the higher the amount of time,**
**the longer that ActiveSync could be open before the script runs again,**
**and also the longer that it could take for ActiveSync**
**to start up when you plug it into the USB.**
This is VERY light weight.
The biggest part about this program is the Instructions and ReadMe Word Documents and the Icon Dll.
Coming Soon:
Custom user input for the amount of seconds the script waits to run again.
(Currently only have a choice from the presets).
App-To-Date Support.
Better User Interface coming later.
Rapidshare Download Mirror.
PPCGeeks Thread!
This Program has been completely reworked.
If you have any problems what-so-ever, let me know ASAP!
Reserved.
(Just because everyone else does it.)
I will be keeping a to list at both PPCGeeks and XDA-Developers with the different requests.
Can't guarantee I will incorporate them, but will try my best to when I have the time.
Possible To Do List For Next Version(s):
What's listed in post #3.
Hey man -
Any chance you can make this into something which runs Activesync once a day or something? A lot of folks here use AS for Google Calendar, and it makes no sense to sync every 3-4 hours (which is the max allowed) when all we want is once in the morning or something. The rest of the day AS just sits there and eats our batteries.
And maybe have the functionality of syncing using GPRS and not strictly USB.
THANKS though - was really looking forward to some AS tweaks.
I don't have GPRS so I'm kind of screwed on that part.
(I have a cdma phone.)
but I can try and see if I can figure out the stuff needed for that through the internet.
Also, I think I have an idea on how to do that first part (the once a day)
when would be the best times for everyone? like midnight, one am? etc.
(I'll eventually make more times once I get the hang of it!)
fixed the initial problem. forgot to replace a file with a newer version.
woops.
Can you describe the problem this application is solving?

Do you ever look at your task manager and find that activesync start running out of no where, then this is what you need.
I'm not sure if this is more towards CDMA version of phones,
but there has been tons of posts and threads started because of this and they wanted a way to stop that from happening, well that's what this does.
it's a SMALL script that runs and stops it from hogging up your memory or wearing down your battery.
All of the fixes for this problem have eliminated push email from working,
or eliminates activesync from working on the phone period(even when connected to computer). etc.

How about 24 hours from the last time it's launched (automatic or manually)? If that's too much of a hassle, midnight is just fine.
FYI-
The way I do this right now is to choose sync every 4 hours for peak and manually for non-peak and set the peak-time as 12-1AM.
The problem still is that the rest of the day - it's eating eating eating ... battery.
For me, to get rid of ActiveSync always starting, it was enough to remove all of Notifications (with Dotfred's Task Manager) except the one for RNDIS, and setting following registry key: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\ActiveSync\KeepAlive to 0.
Cody which version should be used on a sprint touch. I downloaded them all, but not sure which one to install on the phone.

All versions can be used.
The vXXS at the end of the names mean v=version
XX-the amount of time it waits to loop the script again.
S=seconds.
so if you want it to check every ten seconds get the v10s,
every twenty seconds get v20s,
and so on.

There is some debate about how much resources AS uses when running in the background. Some say practically none. It just seems reasonable that ANY program (including ASKicker) will consume SOME resources (memory/battery).
I did some tests on my Tilt using the Battery Guard program to measure the battery drain at any particular time.
According to those measurements, AS appears to be consuming about 20mA of battery during its idle time. Your mileage may vary. See the full results here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4078369#post4078369

But then you wouldn't have meeting reminders, nor automatic updates say to your weather software, rss news, etc, right?
I would really like to get this working on my tilt.
I use codyppc personalizer which I believe uses Mortscript too.
After I installed askicker and it didnt appear to be working, I installed mortscript 4.3b2. Now (in advanced task manager) I show two processes of Mortscript.exe running, one in \program files\mortscript and one in \program files\personalizer. Is there a conflict here?
Active sync is still running. Does Mortscript have to be installed in a specific place for this to work?
Thanks in advance.

I just replied to your message with this same exact thing.
I forgot about this thread.
I have been REALLY busy lately,
and hurt my back at work,
so I've been out of commision on here for a while.
I plan to have it finished and fixed by friday/saturday.
But it might be delayed depending on my website I have to get finished ASAP,
and I've already been put a day behind schedule with the website after I came up with the friday/saturday deadline.
So only time will tell.
Sorry it's taken so long people.
This was in hardcore beta stage when I initially released,
and had a BIG problem with my cab program and computer,
and it's just been one thing after another. haha.
so yeah, this will be done friday/saturday hopefully.
cant wait till this is fixed so I can use it on my TouchPro and Titan!!!
Active Sync Master
i couldnt sleep all night trying to figure this out. THANX ALOT!!
I thought no one wanted it, but I have been messing with a UI for it,
that way you'll be able to specify the amount of seconds between each time it runs, and a few other things and will be able to update with future components that I am working on myself.
I have about another week of summer left, so hopefully I can get my website I've been working of FOREVER(I've been going wakeboarding and going out too much). but I want to fix this sometime this week!!
Just thought I'd update you all!
Sorry I've been MIA from alot of my forums lately.
Bump!!!
This is new!!
Just got finished!!
Read all of post one before commenting please!!
Cool, thanks cody, was wondering what happen to u. Are u still making a custom rom for the vogue too, or have u been too busy.
NM on the vogue rom. I see where u don't have a vogue anymore.
