Hello all. I am a newbie, exciting as that sounds! Anyways, this is my out cry, possibly to some of the major contributors (if possible), maybe even some of the ROM developers out their. My goal is simple...making your life easier, and less stressful with us newbies.
Anyways, here is what I would like to contribute to the forum. I would like to write up a Wiki of free software, and how to install and so forth for XDA-Developers. I would gladly take control of this, link to the downloads and so forth, but would like some help from the seniors here, since I don't really know a ton about this stuff. However, from what I see here (daily for about 4 months) is that generally, the major issues are finding software and what it actually does, and I think this could help a ton! Let me know through PM or this thread if you are interested in helping me out, as well as helping a lot of people out, I would think. I do know the current Wiki does provide a tools review section, but I think a general link location, title, version, release date and brief description page would be helpful.
Much of that work has already been done in the existing Kaiser Wiki. I'm sure that if you wanted to maintain a matrix of software, installation instructions, version numbers, etc. and keep it updated, the powers that be would consider it a worthwhile addition. As for links to the software, many (most?) are already on the Wiki.
i think its a good idea but most of which are already on either the wiki's or stickies...as well as other threads in other sections...much of this wont be needed of people just searched and dig a bit deeper than one page of reading...a lot of answers are out there just need to search harder or refine the search
I do live a lot by the wiki, I just find it to be a bit clumsy, since it is VERY overwhelming, especially from a new person stand point. I was thinking of a simple page, that listed the following, work in progress, let me know what others think first.

Would it be big? Probably, but I think it could be very helpful as well.
here's a good place to start:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Must_have_tools
this is linked from the hermes wiki, but most of the software will work on the kaiser too. try looking at the wikis of other devices, and also looking in the software subforum, you will get a good idea of wat ppl use on their kaisers
thanks that is very helpful. This is pretty much what I am looking to start/add to. Let me start working on some stuff and prototype it, also, if I could get some information from some developers, if you do work, and see this post, post me to your stuff, directly with some brief descriptions of it, so I can start looking at it. Thanks all!
this is what I was thinking
Name: HTC Action Screen & HTC Action Screen From Storage Disk
Description: This is a quick access to tasks. Generally placed in the bottom task bar, lets you gain access to things like: New SMS, New Email, New Appointment etc. See Screen Shot.
Language: English
Download Link: Action Screen, Action Screen From SD
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340803
Latest Version: Unknown
Release Date: Unknown
Developer: HTC
Donation Link: N/A
Known Issues/Fixes: How To Fix Wrong Email, MMS & Contact Shortcut
And so on, kind of an easy format to update and fix up
Don't forget to add classifications. I'd even go so far as to think of this as a searchable database or at least a spreadsheet that can managed as a filtered list. You're looking at dozens of apps to keep track of. From an admin standpoint you'll want to track the last date YOU updated the info as well.
I've done similar projects for companies....it's a pain to manage in a text file.
I like the spreadsheet idea, I think I already have to many other websites being worked on to add another DB to the picture I was also thinking about wiki'ing it as well, which probably would not look pretty in a spreadsheet, but who knows.
Its an excellent idea. I agree with you that it is already available but not in the format you plan on doing.
+1 for the idea; ideal for newcomers and/or folks who have been out of touch for a time.
As for those whe are saying that all this is already available in one form or another: very true, but when you have to dig through hundreds upon hundreds of threads then other hundreds of pages within the thread... Yes, searching, but you have to know what to search for. A vague idea of desired functionality helps, but what if you don't even know of something that could potentially be a life-line for you?
you should probley put in screen shots too. Ya know to make it easier on everyone.
This is an awesome idea. What i really hate is when someone posts a thread full of cabs but with no explanatation as to what they actually do. The worst i find is with all the HTC apps. page after page of "HTC camera", "HTC album", "HTC action screen", it isn't exactly easy to tell from the name what a lot of them do.
ok well we will see you when you're done and I'm sure that will be a couple of years.

I definetly think screen shots would be nice. Sometimes form is just as necessary as function and I'd like to see what I'm going to be working with / not working with.
spring cleaning
I say this site needs some spring cleaning since there's no many versions of this and that to the point it takes lots of time digging and finding whats best for everyone

This already exists. It's been linked in the wiki for ages. In the 'Downloads' section, there are links to external freeware pocketpc sites, which include descriptions and multiple screenshots per application.
Y'all just need to browse the wiki more often and when you find something, link it to the wiki, so it *CAN* be easily found in the future for others.
Hope this helps!
I'm an AT&T user, so I have a tilt, and I am positive this question has been asked before but I've looked but with no luck, if I put the Kaiser released update for 6.1 will it work without bugs? I've been hearing that it wipes your data, if you do so, and that's fine, I just want to check if it works 100% like normal?
And if so, where is a link to the non-leaked update download, I can only find the leaked one, and is there I program I can get that just backs up my contacts to my computer? I don't care about backing anything else up.
Thank you so much.
I recommend you read the wiki and understand what you need to do so that you can flash safely.
first you must install hard spl because you cannot flash anything but the att rom until you do.
Then you can flash the official htc 6.1 rom--links are in the wiki.
Att has not released an official version of 6.1. The leaked and cooked versions are quite good. Once you have read everything you should try some and find one that works for you.
I am today using the official htc 6.1 rom. But I regularly test other cooked roms. I use my phone for business and need stability and dependability. I really like shogunmark's death rom business edition v 4.1. It fits my needs and I ran it for almost a week. We lost a cell tower in a storm earlier this week and I didn't know it so I went radio and rom searching to try to get my great reception back...alas I still have to go either outside or upstairs to use my phone.
Welcome to the forums but remember always look in the wiki and search. We have a great wiki for the kaiser that is continually updated so you can always start there or look for new posts. That is where you can find new current info.
Welcome and safe flashing.

Yea, that was kinda a stupid question to ask (per your thread subject). I think you should buy an iPhone! You deserve it! WOW!

I think this is constructive answer. It´s not bad to be nice
I'm thinking of update my ROM on my TyTN II.
But I really don't know what ROM to use.
Should I go for WM6.1 or WM6.5? If I use WM6.5, would the Kaiser get slower than WM6.1?
And it would be great to have a ROM that is more "fingerfriendly" than the orignial ROM, so I don't need to use the stylus for everything. I know i don't have to use it, but if the icon's where larger and so on, it would be so much easier =)
It would be great if some of you guys that have a little bit of knowledge at this area, just replied what ROM you like best and a link where to DL it =) Screens would be great =)
I've searched the forum, but every damn ROM says: "This is the best ROM ever made" hehehe... Yeah right, that makes it so much easier for me, and the other noobs on the forum
Thanx for any replies
//phjott
you should try each one, look it descriptions / pics and stuff, if you think is all you need, then thats the best rom for you
I know what you mean, but there are millions of ROM's out there. So I just wanna hear what ROM's people at XDA uses and likes the best.
I can't try each one, that's impossible. And I'm pretty new to PPC, so i don't know what to look at.
Here is a list of all the best roms with details and screen shots. The list also includes links.............http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=378
Look at the screenshots and the content list, pick one you like and flash. If after a wekk you don't like that one, flash the next one on the list.

There are not millions, there might not even be a hundred.

Just a figure of speak boy, I know there are not millions.. It was just to make a point =)
But I still want to now what's the best choice of WM6.1 and WM6.5?
I want the best performance =)
Without me sounding like a a** best ROM discussions are against the forum rules.
I'm sure that stands here too, thats why you getting satiricle answers as there is no best ROM "so many variables on what people like & want" flash and you will find what you like which is what we all do.
Good luck in finding best ROM
p.s check peoples sigs that will give an idea
Thanx alot for quick replies! This is really a helpful forum =D
I've managed to succesfully flash my ROM now
Now my Kaiser is running: [Aug 4th][PDACorner] Ultimate-X2.V9 -23017|M2D|CHome|Enhanced Version
And I'm very pleased with that ROM, after checking it out for a couple of hours now But I have a problem, and that is the norwegian letters on the hardware keyboard does'nt work =( What do i need to do to get them to work? Tried to search the forum, but can't find a solution =/
Edit: I solved the problem with some simple reg.edits..

Saw a list in Wizard forums and found a thread of all the roms which is a good way of organizing all the roms but I hate the endless scrolling so I put up this google docs to kinda sort it out. Check out see if you think it works. Are there any other criteria that should be included.
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tBctimfdK9NM5awAG-Xnwpw&single=true&gid=0&output=html
P.S. all the links are to the rom threads not the roms themselves
update: added a latest changes column instead of comment column
97 views and no replies guess it's not worth the effort to update and maintain this.
Well, I think it's a good idea dude, cheers for the work!
I second that
It is a great idea, I am just thinking of an easier way for you to do it because I could see where that would be a pain.
yeah I'd like to have it internal to the site but don't know how to do that and easily edit it.
Nice! Thanks and appreciate the effort to put it together - it is a pain reading through threads to get a view of what is out there!

Excellent idea. Thanks alot.
1st i have 3 different roms check my signature
2nd i think you must add the language wwe
because i see 2 roms in the list one is SWE and the other is multi language
3rd great work
This is the same problem I am running in to with my mirror.
Im trying to update the mirror with new ROMs most days (ok, have now for nearly a week... work has to come first)
The only field I dont have at the moment (although I have been meaning to add it in) is the TF3D version
If cooks what to upload their own ROMs to my mirror they are MOOR than welcome as it will save me time while tring to upload the rest...
I dont have a RS account so it can take along time to download all these new ROMs

thanks, for the support, I can't always tell the language, I added the column and will correct as appropriate. I also organized the list by developer so I could easily make sure I have all the roms each developer.
thanks again.
i think theres a thread aboot it already.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=557177
no update since 9/11
well I will try to keep this up to date as long as there is interest, I've changed the rating column to stability because that is a lot less subjective.
update: added a latest changes column instead of comment column
still looking to keep this list alive.
hugely useful
thanks!
tGo
why not cooks update the wiki with thier rom info....i know there are some who do that already. that way we dont have to wait for one person to updat stuff!
Benchmarking/speed
for me right now I need the fastest ROM available, Could we add a column for overall speed? Like, startup time, windows folder list time, etc?
i wonder why you dont update the wiki:O
espacially this
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Rhodium
just put it in there.. what do you think a wiki is for? fun?
compare to this one ...

what do you need googledocs for:O
Hi,
in earlier times I was able to find an overview of ROMs available for several models. Actually I am looking for an overview of available ROMs for the Touch Pro 2. Maybe I am dumb, blind or both (must not be confirmed at this time but I can't find this overview anymore. Or is it the Wiki (currently down)?
I am not the expert for this forums here - only looking here from time to time to find some improvements. Didn't update my TP2 before yand the factory installed ROM is in. I know how to change the ROM and so on.. But I think its rather hard to find the right ROM while reading lots of pages instead of having the former overview.. Any ideas how to optimize my search?
Thank you for some input
There is/was some stuff on various official ROMs in the Wiki, but I don't recall anything about the custom/cooked ROMs in there, if that's what you're after.
Ive seen it too and now cannot find it. Ima dig a lil more cuz I know Ive seen it here a few months ago. .... Stevie, Im rather certain they r talkin about there was a list of all the ROMs here. Also had links to each one. Its not in the wiki, its in "ROM development", althouigh Im not exactly sure where its at now, perhaps I can find it and post a link. Good luck!!
