Every time I try to do the rom upgrade for my PDA2K the device does a soft reset (when it's reset it then reconnects to activsync, and the green logo reappears) and after a while the ROM upgrade software tells me there is an Error 101 Connection Error. It's driving me nuts, I've tried all sorts of variants, soft reset first, hard reset first, USB port, USB2 port, Activesync 3.7.1, activesync 3.8, Windows XP, Windows 98. I don't understand why there is a connection error, because I can connect to activesync correctly, it even reconnects after the ROM upgrade causes it to do a soft reset. Please help! I've even tried following directions to copy the temporary files and running those directly but the result is the same.
Bizarre
Try connecting your device then stopping activesync (task manager, then stop "WCESCOMM.exe" in XP), then run the upgrade.
Regards,
Dom
Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the process kept reappearing during the attempted upgrade and I still got the Error 101 message.
When activesync starts, let it complete the sync and then go ahead and run the upgrade. I experienced this last weekend
victor
I've tried it dozens of times. I've let it sync on many occasions, and I've also tried it on many occasions with it connected as guest.
I tried iMate online support for the third occasion regarding this matter, and as before once I tell them what the problem is they then don't respond (they also never respond to my emails either).
I have actually considered hiring a laptop for 24 hours, just in case it's my Mac that is causing the problem (but I'm using Microsoft Virtual PC running Microsoft Windows XP to upgrade the ROM on a phone running Microsoft Pocket PC, so I really don't see why it shouldn't work. Normal sync, and installing software via Activesync work fine. I'm on the brink of selling the device because it's just caused me too much grief. The trouble is, it's put me off ever buying another Pocket PC, and I cannot find a suitable alternative. Every device I read about has some reason why it wouldn't be suitable.
At last I've had the opportunity to do the ROM upgrade on a 'real' PC running Windows XP.
It behaved in EXACTLY the same way as running Virtual PC on my Mac (even down the the odd delay before Activesync recognises that the phone is connected - I had assumed that this was because of the inefficiency of running an emulator!).
Error 101 connection error every time. Firewall switched off. Tried with and without hard reset.
I wonder if there could be a hardware fault with my phone? The pins on the phones connector all look fine.
Now I am really stuck, I seem to have completely run out of options (and I don't want to send the device of the the middle east either!).
One last idea. Is there anything more than a hard reset? I've just removed the battery. If the unit is completely deprived of power will this take it back to factory settings any more than a hard reset?
NOPE!
Hard Reset is the best you can get bar removing the insides of the phone and swapping it with someone else's!!!
Dom
if you do remove the battery you need to put the lock switch back into the postion as if it the battery was in. This seems to make the phone think that the battery is dead and then drain the internal backup one.
I cannot get ActiveSync to detect my phone.
I get the XP message "USB Device Not Recognized" when I plug in the phone.
I have checked my USB drivers. They are more up to date (2004) than the ones listed on the Microsoft support page listed in the ActiveSync readme.doc
I am running ActiveSync 4.5 on a Windows XP laptop
Windows Mobile 6 CE OS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2)
on an Orange Tytn II (ok, I will flash the rom once I have a working ActiveSync!)
I have tried switching off the firewall on the laptop - no luck.
Changing the in "Enable advanced network functionality" through the 'USB to PC' connections makes no difference.
In the Get Connected Window USB is listed as having status "USB is available" after clicking Next on Checking COM ports (it takes a while).
I have uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSync 4.5 (obtained from both the CD and the Microsoft web site).
I have done the usual cycle of switching everything off and rebooting (several times).
I have tried all four of the USB ports on my ASUS A6000.
New suggestions for things to try most welcome.
I did have the same problem myself when I first got mine. I also tried turning firewalls off etc. The only method that seemed to regularly work was to reset the kaiser and ultimately a hard reset
i had a similar problem and i found it was because i still had the nokia phone sync software on my pc too .. removing it sorted the problem
Soft reset the device, reboot the pc.
If USB syncing doesnt work, try bluetooth.
Works for approx 30 secs after reboot
I think I have a faulty phone.
ActiveSync works for about 30 seconds after a reboot, as does gps tracking, and then the connection is lost (and gps fixes on the last tracked location). I have tried soft/hard resets, all to no avail.
Unfortunately I bought the phone in London and I will have to wait until I am next in London to take it back to the Orange shop for a replacement :-(
I am having the same issue but I cant get activesync to work at all
I could recognise the kaiser on one PC but not on another, messed around and go it working then it stoped , all along it was mt Firewall, disabled the fire wall never had any more problems with activesync. that was my issue might be something for you to look into

I think your phone is ok. ActiveSync always gives all kind of problems.
I sync my kaiser on my desktop, my laptop and at work. For some reason, my desktop had exactly the same problem than yours. I tried everything!
Finally I found something that made it work much better. Go to Settings->Connections->USB to PC and uncheck the option 'Enable advanced network functionality'
After that, I still get some random disconnects, but only happens like every 3 or 4 days.
Hope it helps.
I had this same problem (device not being recognised) but fixed it by connecting the USB directly to the PC not via a USB hub. This makes me think that the TyTN II requires the maximum current from its USB connector to work; a hub reduces the available power; some PC connections may not have enough and this could account for the problems some users are experiencing perhaps??

Have you fixed the problem yet? I'm having the same problem and tried everything suggested here.
I tried it on 2 computers with Vista. First it worked, but since my laptop with XP isn't reacting on my Kaiser anymore, Vista can't find the Kaiser too. Only a friend of mine, who has a Trinity, can use activesync. Is flashing a good fix?
Found solution to my problem
I have finally found a solution that works for me (having tried everything that everybody has suggested, plus more).
I found that if you have a password enabled (ie, something that has to be typed when the phone is first switched on; available via Settings -> Personal -> Lock) and a firewall running, then an ActiveSync connection fails for no obvious reason.
Disable the firewall and your phone will prompt you for the password after which ActiveSync works.
Disable the password and there is no prompt with/without firewall and ActiveSync works.
In my case I also had to untick the 'enable advanced network functionality'.
i am starting to thing there maybe a big problems here , i have the same thing and nothing has helped,,diffant pc`s i have hard reset the phone, unticked Enable advanced network. and still nothing.
The problem that I found was the notifications queue for ActiveSync on my phone had been corrupted.
I downloaded memmaid and used the "recreate Activesync" under the database menu.
Unplug from the USB, run MemMaid and on the "JumpTo" softkey go to "Databases\Notification queue". Tap on the arrow to the right of "Add..." and tap "Recreate ActiveSync". Soft reset your phone wait 60 seconds after everything is loaded and plug the USB cable in. You should be good to go.
This is a known problem with ActiveSync and happens on a plethora of WMD's, not just the Kaiser or HTC. I used to have the same problem on an iPaq PPC. Microsoft's official answer to this was it was the OEM's fault for not following strict rules on implementing properly coded USB drivers.
well BulldogXTRM you got my hopes up there,,,,
but it did not work for me,

Sorry partner, I guess it's not always the same problem.
Hi I have a fault with Activesync (Vista), I connect the USB cable to the PC and to the handset, the power indicator tells me that it's charging yet, the device is not syncronizing.
I have reset both the PC and the Device with no avail.
It was working OK about a week ago now nothing, I have not altered any settings and im running HYPERDRAGON III with radio 1.65.24.36 any suggestions???
You are required to search before posting, and seeing as this is a common problem I don't think you have met the requirements.
This is sort of an "advanced" users forum. If you don't search first, you won't get much help on here. Look at the top right, see the "search" click it, type in something and it should help you out. This is a very common problem, asked and answered many times.
I'll take a moment and try to help. It's just as easy as telling you to search.
I found a thread or two (the search is really time consuming. I don't find it to work all that great...find too much stuff unrealted to what you need). And they didn't help.
What I am only just not realizing is that it seems that the firewall with the Virus software may be interferring. If I turn off the firewall long enough to synch, it works.
What a pain, but that's what's working for me.
Never had this problem on XP.

Thanks for the support and advice. I have followed instructions yet problem still pesists.
I have disabled firewall and Anti-Virus to no avail. When connecting the USB cable usually I hear a notification that the device is attached but this doesn't happen. Very puzzling!
Awesome problem solved. Reinstalled Wdinows Mobile Centre and all works ok now. Im not sure if this has any similarity but I know there was a Vista update the other day which may of interfered with the device drivers. Not sure.
But all is working well!
It'll be interesting to see if it keeps working well. INstalling WMDC was my first attempt at fixing. It appeared to fix, but the next time I went to synch, it didn't work again.
I spent the next 2-3 weeks reinstalling WMDC every tiem I wanted to sync, and it would sync.
I remain only able to do it if I disable my firewall (or reinstall WDMC, which I'm tired of). Of course, that could be vendor specific problem. I am using Trend Micro on my PC.
Nope issue still reminas, I'm pretty sure its the connectors in the Mini USB, on reading other forums I have discovered that the Mini USB port has been known to malfunction. This is due to the design of the port and the fact the cables shipped with the device are standard and not customised for the device.
I just wiggle around the socket a few times and hey it works (fingers crossed). Might justbrick it and order a replacment that will work if I can't sync any more.
I have also noticed that you have to wait after a soft reset for all of the programs to fully load. ESPECIALLY if you use BB Connect.
I believe this to be the true reason why rebooting a PC sometimes helps... it gives the Kaiser enough time to fully start.
instead of reinstalling WMDC, just make sure the service required to connect your device to your computer is running.
I believe its called windows mobile based connectivity. You wont be able to connect with that on manual. Switch it to automatic, as it sometimes likes to switch back to manual especially after a ROM flash.
Dear all, i've read lot about missing activesync connection...no solution found until now...
charging trough USB ok...but no activesync... TyTn II, AS 4.5 WinXP, ROM Laurentis (newest), sync was working perfectly for weeks...and now not more (miracules...).
Hard reset done, AS reinstalled. tested with differend cable and pc. My old Kaiser (model before II) connecting without any problems. repllog.exe exercises done, all combination advanced network, usb etc done....what other? can be mini USB hardware problem?....so far all possibly woodoos....
as ROM is not more HTC original, no warranty...
any advice will be very, very, very appreciated...
best regards
Toms
How is Activesync via Bluetooth? When you tried Activesyncing with another PC using another cable, was 'use advanced network functionality' switched off at the time? Some PCs just cant handle an AS connection with it on. You'll need to think about what changes you've made since it was working fine.
No need to worry about the ROM, there are steps in the wiki about how to restore your device back to factory original state SHOULD you need to send it in - read that. I've never flashed a custom ROM and even I've read it. It should be one of those things you read before doing any flashing.
Hi Flying Kiwi
thanks for your reply...my both PC and Laptop are not euiped with BT, so far i didn't tested. I've tested on both in combination with differend cables incl. switched on/off "advanced network functionality", hard reset, new AS installation.... On the same computers i can still connect without any problems my "old" Hermes (TyTn first generation). so far i'm suspecting that something is wrong in the PPC side, only the question what? working perfectly and just stopping to do this...without any new software installatione etc....
Flashing ROM's was no problem as long activesync was working correctly. Now unique way to flash back to HTC ROM will be option from SD card...but how to do this? i did found nothing about this...
I suspect something with RNDIS, but not clear idea yet...so far still no solution...so far pity that i need the PPC for my work with full functionality...
Similar question was posted on AT&T forum and the solution was as follows http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=104069
Woow...good hint!
Hi HBaer...thanks you finally some progress for me in this story...
it's working but instead to show "ubs" on the boot screen show "serial" (...and this is this what is disturbing the AS connection...as suspect not AS/PC but something wrong with PPC) how to change it???
best regards
TomSch
How are you connecting to your USB? If you are connecting through a hub, you will need to connect directly to a USB port not through the hub.
directly, no hub...the same connection was working perfectly and still is working perfectly with my old Hermes...
Refer to XDA Developers wiki and stuck at bootloader screen section http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_Stuck_at_bootloader
HBEAR, again top hint! original HTC ROM re-flashed ....but still no connection trough USB...trying re-boot on the screen "serial" and no change to "usb" after attachment to the USB cable...more and more suspect hardware issue, some method to check it?
best regards
Try sync with a different computer
done...with 3 laptops and 1 desktop PC....and check lot of very interesting inputs in forum on xda-developers, great source of information! btw i've placed my questions on the htc pages too....no any answer :-(...
I believe a "Force USB" HardSPL may fix your problem. There is a HardSPL sticky in the ROM Developement forum, go read up on it.
look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=438232
maybe the soloution for your problem too??
check your registry-keys !!!!
Hi All,
I've been running the Orange (UK) WM6.1 ROM for months/years without problems and was messing around with some texts and somewhere along the line I have ended up with the standard 4 stripes down the screen and some text top left.
I have scanned the forums here and the wiki and they suggest connecting using USB and running Mtty.exe, however whilst I can connect the phone using USB Activesync won't recognise it and then I get an error from Mtty.exe because it won't recognise the phone.
I have also tried re-intalling the Orange ROM as well as newer roms, but none of them seem to be able to connect to the phone.
Active sync doesn't seem to be able to connect on Win 7 or Win XP despite them syncing fine this morning.
So, any suggestions out there?
I'll do some more searching, but any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Try a new USB cable, I went through 5 in one year, or try flashing via SD card.
Well I tried a couple of different leads and no luck.
I did manage to get some info from mtty.exe, but didn't make sense.
I took my SIM out to use in another phone and having left the battery out for a while, put it back in to try again at getting it to start and it booted fine without any problems.
After a bit of messing around it seems like that the boot problem is either down to a problem with the SD card, SIM or a foreign object in phones casing.
I keep the phone in a pocket of my overals that I use a workshop and occasionally iron filings from a grinder can get into it's working, which is what I think has happened.
ANyway, it's back and working again, only need to keep it going until Orange can get some Desire HDs in
Hi!
Read those threads again, the solution is there.
1.Disable USB connections in Activesync menu (right click on green icon on the tray)-->connection settings-->untick "Allow USB connections"
2.Put your device in bootloader mode (yours is in it)
3.Start to connect it with MTTY to do what you want or just run an official Orange UK ROM update
If everything is fine, your device will be alive again.
After that install Hard-SPL to avoid problems like this.

Scootie
P.S.:Sorry,I didn't read post #3,but it can be useful later.
One more tip:check the camera button.
Thanks Scootie,
I'll try the Hard-SPL thing - the jumping into boot loader seems pretty random, has happened a couple more times and I find I have to pull the battery for several minutes and then try a restart.
The camera button doesn't seem to do much other than what it is supposed to.
Pretty annoying since I have had the phone for 3 years, but have not had signal at home so hardly use it, and now we have signal due to Orange/T-Mobile merger from the beginning of the month the phone fails me :-(
