G1 FTP Server. Discussion. - G1 Apps and Games

Hey either yesterday or day before it came on the market I saw, a G1 FTP server to allow you to transfer files to your G1 via ftp. I know personally its nifty but so far I havent been able to get it to connect. =/ Anyways I thought Id bring it up here since not sure if its been talked about yet but Im sure the interest is here. =)
Any Dyndns for the G1 yet? =D

It's been up for a long time. Personally I have no idea how to set it up Search DynDns in Market. I think there's an application.

Anyone use either yet and have it working? Can it have the ability to read the ext2 files as well via ftp? That would be awesome.

I downloaded it a while ago, only used it once to test but it worked well.
I just use the usb cable for file transfers though because my G1 doesn't pick up wifi as well as the laptop from the distance to my router.

Yea but wouldnt the FTP server work via EDGE network?

Don't know the situation in your country/operator but from what I've seen in Europe, you're always connected in your operator's private network.
So you get an IP like 10.x.x.x or anything else that is not reachable from the internet. So no server software can run on your device with such an IP.

hrm then wonder how 3G does it..

The Dev did do 3g but couldnt test it according to the last update he did. I know when I start up it says Starting 3G Network.

At Work- Access network via ActiveSync/USB?

I read somewhere that when hooked up to the PC and activesynch, that WIFI doens't work (which seems to be the case for me) and you can/will access the internet via that method. The trick is you need to have the proxy server that your office uses entered.
I have ooked to my PC at work, and have the Proxy address in, but I still cannot get to the internet.
The one thing that I also seem to remember (can't find that post now) is that somethign about Active synch. I just tried, on the PC, to select "This computer connected to The Internet". It had been auto. didn't help.
Am I trying to do somethign that I can't? If not, any ideas you can share on what I need to set up?
You can allow your phone to use WiFi by checking the box in your ActiveSync settings.
Thanks. That wasn't really what I need to know. I need dto be more clear.
I don't have wifi at work (well I do, but after many attempts and a long thread here, I still cannot connect to it).
What I want to know is can I get to the internet through my hookup to my computer.

You will have to speak to your network administrator.
They could be using MAC addressing or simple password access to a proxy. Either will prevent you using the PC's internet access.
You may also find if they do allow you Internet access, any SMTP or apps that use specific ports/protocols may not work.
It's most likely just security at your work establishment!
EDIT: One way I found around it in MAC systems is to add an access point to your PC which can the copy the PC's MAC to itself and use NAT so that the network just thinks its the PC communicating (you will need another NIC in the PC). The Activesync connection does not use NAT in a correct fashion.
this should help, if you cannot view pages @ pda via AS
Accessing the proxy at work with a PC is as simple as entering the dns name in my browser setup on the PC. I an accessing it fine wiht that. IN fact they have the wireless set up so that anyone coming in visiting who is told the proxy dns name can access a 'public' wireless method. But for some reasong my Tilt will not work on either the public one or the private one which is using Peap.
I also find that at home where I know all my network setup I cannot access the Internet via hookup to the computer.
Based on all of that it must be somethign about my Tilt, or more likely, the setup.
BTW...I can access wifi at home and many other places. Just not through the USB and PC or wireless at my work place.
Pulka...I'll check out your item.
Thanks
[edit]
I just re-read Farsquidges post, and that may be something to check out at work. And I know tha tat home, my router is set up to allow specific MACS. I don't think they do that at work. but I'll see if I can get through it at home. My router will display the MACs trying to get through, and I can allow it. At least that will answer if my Tilt is even trying to get through maybe.
[edit 2]
I think I must not know how to set this up to access via the PC. I just attempted at home, and my device seemed set up for Work Network. I'll have to figure this out.

Skyfire issue

When I load it up, skyfire forces my phone to "connect" to the internet, even though it is already connected, then skyfire can't connect and it gives me some error about not having internet connectivity. I "believe" this is due to like proxies or something on the phone? Can someone point me in the right direction please?
ok, so i found the cabs...but it doesn't make a difference. Why can't this software just auto detect that the connection exists already..........ugh! I really want to try this.

The proxy makes no difference it is built into the software. My first beta connected to My ISP even though MediaNet was main connection with no problems. The latest release 0.6 has an issue when you have something other than My ISP as main connection it will not connect. I have e-mailed them long ago on the issue and am waiting a reply. **even if My ISP IS connected, but not the main connection it still won't work, the connection HAS to be My ISP** Kind of annoying having to change it from MediaNet to get my Cingular Video and MediaNet homepage to My ISP when I want to use Skyfire, hopefully they will fix it in a new release.
Connection doesnt have to be MY ISP. Mine goes through MediaNet and works fine. I did have to turn off the proxy to get it to connect. Also for the guy having trouble with the Cab. If you didnt sign up for the beta it wont work. The program is connected to your phone number and when you go to authenticate to the server you get denied if you dont have an account. Gd Luck

WM6.1 & Internet Sharing (on a Diamond)

This is probably a very specific issue that I'm experiencing but hopefully someone out there can help me.
I recently got an HTC Touch Diamond, running WM6.1. I use Internet Sharing on the phone and then connect it to my PC via a USB cable. I can then browse the web from my PC. If I now connect to my office VPN, it seems that the connection times out and / or is very slow. I can't even browse to other PC's on the network via the VPN connection as it times out. But I can ping the PC's so I know I'm definatly on the network.
Now I know what everyone is thinking... our VPN might be screwy. But if I use someone else in the office's phone (running WM6.0) I can connect and there is no problem whatsoever. The only difference is that he is on a different service provider than me (and of course a different phone).
I used to have a SE M600i before this phone and it worked perfectly on that (same service provider as now).
Has anyone experienced anything simular? Or have any ideas what I could check?
I've played around abit and found the following: When I take my SIM card and put it into another HTC running WM6.0 (can't remember the model) it works perfectly and I can browse our intranet sites over the VPN. So the problem is definatly limited to my phone.
I also used Internet Sharing on the other phone and then established the VPN connection from my laptop. I didn't change any of the settings so it is 100% the same on both phones as download from the service provider upon insertion of the SIM card.
On my phone when I'm connected to the VPN I can browse the network shares and download email, but as soon as I try and browse our intranet websites or try to connect to any database (using TOAD etc.) it doesn't seem to be able to retrieve data. Almost like the phone is not able to handle large amounts of data coming through... (i'm just guessing here)
Anyone know of any setting somewhere on the phone that could cause this to happen?
Finally got this working!!
I'm now using WMWiFiRouter to use my phone as a WiFi router and then connect to the internet from my pc. If I then connect to the VPN from my PC everything works fine.
I'm not sure if WMWiFiRouter implements Internet Connection Sharing differently than the normal ICS app on the phone, but it seems to work and it's pretty fast.
Can't believe it took two months - with absolutely no else seeming to have this issue - but I'm glad it's over now!!

Remote Desktop

Hey all.
I've tried searching Google and the XDA, but I still can't seem to get my remote desktop to work.
I'm using the AT&T version (Fuze) and Windows XP Media Center Edition. I went through the steps on my PC to enable and allow RD in the system and firewall sections, and still keep getting the "Cannot connect" error message when I try and use RD on my Diamond. Any advice?
All stock ROM, progs, etc.
Thanks!
If it's anything like T-Mobile in the UK, Remote Desktop may be something blocked at the carrier.
I managed to get around it using an SSH tunnel. It's not actually as difficult as it sounds I describe what I did in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=357009&page=2
Before that I'd try connecting to remote desktop through a wifi connection which you know allows RDP, just to make sure your cellular network is at fault. If it is, you could try complaining - some people on T-Mobile UK have had RDP enabled on their "standard" data contracts which aren't technically supposed to have it from what I have heard.
Hey, thanks for the tips.
I actually tried it on a WiFi connection and got the same result.
I'll try looking into your other suggestion, but aside from that, are there any other troubleshooting options? Thanks all!
See if another computer can remote into your computer. It might not be an issue with your phone.
I was able to connect using another computer in the house...they're not networked but using the same internet connection. Gonna try and have my cousin connect to my comp from his house when he gets home...but so far it doesn't seem like it's my computer...
Still need assistance.
Thanks!
try it without the router. u probably need port fordwarding.
You will also need either a static ip address from your isp or setup dynamic dns resolution (i.e dyndns.org). If you have a dynamic ip address the ip address of your router is issued by your isp every time you connect(not neccessarily a different ip every time, but it might be). As mentioned above you will aslo need to setup port forwarding on your router for port 3389 (default rdp port) to the ip address of the machine you want to remote onto.
Forgive me but...how do you set all that up?
I appreciate all the assistance thus far!
I couldnt get mine to work, so I forward port 5900 on my PC and use RealVNC (free/shareware)
Hello:
I'm also having problems getting my remote desktop to work. Been trying to connect since I picked up my Fuze on the 11th.
I have three different computers that I can successfully administer via my desktop. I've tried using 3G to connect, no success. I've tried using Wi-fi to connect, no success. I've used local computer names, IP addresses, properly forwarded ports --
It has to be a setting I'm missing on the phone. Any ideas? TIA
(and yes, I'm sorry, I know this is the Diamond forum, it's just the only thread I've found)

andFTP problem...

Hi all, I have a strange problem and wondered if anyone could think why it won't work.
I am trying to get access to my work FTP server via andFTP. Now it works fine on my home WiFi (so not an internal external issue) but can't get it to work over the 3G. Does anyone have any idea why this may be or am I just best off trying a different client?
If it doesn't work on 3G, then it's because you haven't forwarded your FTP port in your router. When your phone is connected through 3G, it is outside your local network.
And then you also need to know your "outside" IP address. (Google my IP)
And then thats the IP you need to connect to in andFTP.

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify though it is definately working externally as I can access my works FTP server fine from my home via wifi, even though they are on completely different networks so I know the routing and forwarding etc. is correct from the FTP server end. I just cant work out why it wont connect over 3G.
Can you login to your FTP from work? Or just outside your own network?
It is not the same that you can connect to an outside FTP, that it is to connect from the outside to your internal FTP.
You need to forward port 21 in your router to your FTP server's IP address. Otherwise it wont work.

I can log-in internally when connected to WiFi, I can log-in externally when connected to WiFi, I can't log-in via 3G at all (SocketException). I may well try another FTP client, any recommendations.
So if you connect to a WiFi that isn't your own, you can still log in?
If that is so, then I guess they might have blocked FTP transfers over your 3G network.
It works on mine, thats why it sounds wierd to me, and the only difference is more or less the mobile company.

spot on... after trying a new FTP client and that not working I have done a bit of digging on the web and it seem's t-mob uk block FTP transfers. Anyone else on the same provider confirm this?
That sucks
Try to call t-mobile and ask them if this is just a bug, or if it was intended.
tell me about it! Gonna give them a ring when I get five minutes although I can imagine the call now...
Me: Hello, I cant seem to access FTP via my mobile internet.
T-Mob: Whats FTP???
Me: Could you please open Port 21 so I can access my work files.
T-Mob: No, but did you hear about the great new services you are entitled to for just £xx a month...

FYI, I can ftp my home ftp server no problems over T mobile network using AndFTP.
It could well be how they have you set up, and what package you are signed up for, If you got a G2 from tmobile, I was told there is a specific set they have for you if you have a G2
thanks for the info Higgsy...
As an update to this I have just gotten off the phone to T-Mobile CS and have to say they were very helpful. Although the guy was unsure at first why it wan't letting me get through to FTP he suspected it could be due to not having 'web n walk plus' (£7.50 per month instead of £5). Due to a long wait he added this to my account free of charge.
The problem hasn't gone away yet but he did say it could take up to 24 hours to go through.
Will keep this post updated and let you know if it gets sorted.
I thought it might be that, I used to get this issue trying to access certain things on my old e71 when I had standard web and walk set up. I was actually told by a tech support guy, who was also very helpful that the G1/G2 needed a specific web and walk/account set up.
a quick update to this and 24 hours on unfortunately the upgrade to w+w plus doesnt seem to have fixed things, have decided to give this a miss now and wait for something like a dropbox app to come along.
On the plus side I yet again mentioned my poor internet speed (was averaging around 300-350kbps) so he had a look at the account. Despite being told on several occasion before there was no issue he had a look at the profile assigned to the account and found that, surprise-surprise, I was being throttled at 3g speeds. A few minutes and a phone reset later I am getting speeds in excess of 1500kbps! Hurrah!
I'm not sure what AndFTP's default is, but maybe you want to check that you are using passive mode (it's in the Advanced tab).
