How to Change from one WM6 rom to another? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Hey guys, i've just upgraded from 2003SE to Hermi WM6 ROM, but i messed something up with the ExtRom cabs (before i read the post on ExtRom) as mine now has no ExtROM
anyway, I want to either reinstall/flash this WM6 Rom again, or another...
how do i do this, with the Wizard it is completely different, and there is a guide in the wiki which is lacking here.
So can someone please tell me to flash OVER my current wm6 rom what steps to take?
thankyou kindly.

first of all, there is no point in flashing the exact same rom, if your device still works. you could simply do a hard reset.
but how did you screw up the extrom, do you mean, you forgot to resize it before flashing?
how much memory do you have?
start->settings->system->memory, then the top left number, storage total
assuming it is, like, 43mb, anything less than 60mb, you really have done something wrong. in that case you need to go back to wm2003, then resize the memory and then flash the new rom.
here is the manual on how to downgrade to wm2003:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_Downgrade_WM5
and then here is the manual on how to resize the storage and then upgrade properly:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM6_WizzardUpgrade1_WM2003SE0

thanks chef,.. no i have the correct 60mb memory, but I did not understand what to do with cab1, cab2 etc,,, well i found a thread but now i lost it.. doh!
but thanks, hopefully i can find it again so i can install the add-on cabs correctly

Assuming the card is readable in the PC, you can try using win32diskimager to make a backup image to a file. Then try to burn that to a new card and see if that works. That is the only thing I can think of. Your /data for the hybrid should still be intact on emmc.

A description on how to downgrade to WM2003SE?

OK, I'm just about to take the plunge and try out the new WM5. But if it doesn't work well for my use, are there any instructions on how to get the phone back to where it was? Right now I'm doing a full Sprite Pocket Backup, then I'm gonna do a ROM dump to an SD card of the current ROM and finally follow the upgrade instructions in the Wiki. How do I then get back, if necessary?
You can do a normal SD-backup with mtty, and install WM5 as usual. I'd recommend you not to repartition DOC. In this case the content of extended ROM would not be touched and you'll need to reflash only main ROM (nk.nbf file) when you'll decide to return to 2003SE.
Thanks! Actually the extended ROM is the thing I worry the least about, since I have a cooked ROM anyway. Which probably means that I can repartition anyway, right? So to downgrade I just partition the unit back to where it was and then do the opposite with the SD card - go into bootloader mode, push in the card and wait for the downgrade to begin. Is this correct?
when you repartition the device the extended ROM password is reset. And when restore the old size with that tool you'll be unable to lock extended ROM and it would always be writeable
How to do a SD-backup and where to get the program.
Is it enough if i just ext-rom set to the old size (16384??? am i right) and just copy a files wich were in rom before back to rom, lock and hide the rom and do an downgrade. Is that works???(or it is another way to backup teh ext-rom and how to).
EDIT: I just download the ext-rom the same version as my and there are the same file in there wich i copy from ext-rom so i think thats OK to copy(please correct me if I am wrong)
Wich is the original size of ext.ram(16384i think but I dont now)???
Well, I see no reason to go back to WM2003SE anyway. There are a few annoyances (like WLAN turning itself off when the unit's off and TomTom GPS pairing not working like it should yet), but the plus sides outweigh them.
I just need to now that if something goes wrong, if it is going to work i wont to stay on WM5 but you now, I realy don't wont to do my phone defect.

Full ROM Backup

Hi All!
I'm newbie here. Please, don't beat me for my question .
I've got Qtek 9100, and now want to play with ROM. BUT! I read a lot of here, and haven't found the Full ROM Backup programm. Is it possible? Or, the only way to backup my original ROM partly, using aWizard?
Thanks for any help.
The aWizard tools do Backup all of the rom except bootloader.
BUT: The ExtROM is backuped in single files which is a problem when you want to insert the ExtROM back into the Wizard: because with the newer ROMs (1.6.x) the ExtROM can only be made visible (and stays read-only).

addr You can backup full ROM to SD card, and then to your PC.

Ah, great!
That's the very thing i was looking for!

Now everything works fine. Please, re-download the tool (click my signature).
I tried using your backup for my ROM, because I was going to upgrade. I'm definitely a newbie at ROM upgrading and backing up...
After running the backup utility, my Qtek won't see my mini-sd card anymore. Do you know how I can make it see my card again? Did the process reformat my card or is there another problem?
Thanks!

the data backup in your mini-sd-card is not FAT compliant. but it's OK for restoring using Qtek's rom-flash procedure.
in another way, you can use tools like WinHex to view, edit or save your mini-SD to a PC as a raw binary file.

If you have already saved your ROM image to PC (myrom.bin file), you can format SD card, and use it as always.
Um, I have a noobie question as well...
Will a full ROM backup take a backup up of everything installed after being shipped from the manufacturer, i.e. programs, reg settings etc., or will it only backup the basic ROM and extended ROM, i.e. what you're left with when you hard reset your device?
the_invisigoth Yes, only ROM, not installed apps.
Hi Button,
Does your program backup the whole ROM (ie OS + Extended) or just the OS??
Is there a way to backup the OS only so that I can backup the latest Qtek OS part only. Reload my T-mobile extended ROM then restore the Qtek OS only ROM, giving me the latest OS with my T-mobile customisation??
Cheers

It backups Full ROM = OS+ExR+Radio+SPL/IPL+Splash..
Use aWizard to backup your ROM partly.
I needed Button's program before I updated to 2.8.7. I have a cingular 8125 I upgraded to 2.8.7 it overwrote my extended ROM, when I flashed everything back from awizard I relaized my extended ROM was not restored, so I flashed to 1.5.4 so I could access the extended ROM, but it downgraded my IPL and SPL to 1.?? from 2.??. So once I restored my extended ROM in 1.5.4 I upgraded just the OS to 1.8.11 from my original backup, and now when I do a hardreset it locks up during extended ROM installation. Unless I can find a way to edit the extended ROM on 2.8.7 I wont be able to restore my unit to original specs. Unless someone uses Buttons program on a Cingular 8125 and uploads it somewhere for me. I am gonna return this unit to frys and purchase it at the cingular store for a bit cheaper price. So I was hoping to restore it to orignal specs so the next helpless frys customer dosent get stuck wth a funky unit. Thanks all!
@Button,
would this method allow me to replace my 8125 to its original state including the bootloader flash screen ? i am needing to put my 8125 to its original state prior to returning.
I have a new 8125 that i could take a backup of and want to load it onto the one that i am returning. would this work ? thank you
Yes it should work.
Button,
does your program also perform restoral of ROM and all its content from the backup it's made ?
thanks for your help.

It can backup only 'clear' ROM, without programms that you have installed manually.
THANK YOU BUTTON !!!!
I was able to FULLY RESTORE my Cingular 8125 to its OEM Spec including the first boot splash screen !!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!
I spoke too soon.
Here's what happens...
After 8125 has been booted up, on the screen it says, "Data Crashes. Please contact your service Provider". And if you see on the top left corner, it says SIM LOCK. It will not let me reload the image again from the SD card from the bootloader. When I press the Voice Dial, it says, No Update Allow!.
I've tried to run the aWizard and Lokitz tool to unlock again but to no avail.
Have you seen thsi before ?
First, try to flash an old rom (from bootloader mode), - run any ruu. Then, unlock SIM and CID, if it is need. And then use SD card to restore your original rom.

Upgrading using a SD card

Hi,
Is it possible to upgrade my Qtek 9100 without using an USB cable but a SD card. The reason is that my mini USB connection on the Qtek is broken. So I can't connect the Qtek with my computer.
If it is possible to upgrade with a SD card can anybody tell me how.
I havn't heard of doing it this way in a while. My old T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition. "Space Needle" used to be flashed this way. You would load the Rom onto the SD card and use some type of key combination at boot to load the rom... I'm not sure that it exists with this rom and hardware...
can be done, I do it on my spare wizard that also as a broken usb socket, however you must first have a memorycard with a rom image first.

I have CID unlocked my phone so that's no problem. But how do I upgrade with a SDcard and how to make an image on a SD card.
Who can help.
put your phone in bootloader mode (make sure you have minisd in the slot)...disable activesync on your computer by stopping wcecomm process...then plug in the phone (while it's in bootloader)..then run romupdate_115.exe (look for it in the xda ftp). Then choose the usb connection (I think it's wcusb or something)..press enter..cmd> should appear...then type r2sd all (this will backup everything in the phone to the minisdwhen it completes).
Then when you put it in the phone you want to upgrade..put that minisd in the phone you want to upgrade and put that phone in bootloader. It will ask you if you want to update and press the voice command button to upgrade. Goodluck!
Can I make an image of a romupdate availiable in the xda ftp on a SDcard and upgrade my phone without connecting it to the computer.

If needed, PM Me and you can send me a MiniSD card to load a rom onto for you. and I'll ship it back. Let me know which rom you want loaded, and I will do it for you.
Actually somebody with an CID unlocked wizard can create an SD image and then upload it to the website for you to upload and use but it will definitely wipe out the data on their SD.
I'm in the same boat. My miniUSB port fell in. I need to get the t-mobile ROM back onto the phone so I have a chance of repair. If anyone could upload a ROM onto the forum that will let me update using a miniSD card I’d be very grateful.
At least I’m not the only one who's USB port has broke!

Assuming /dev/sda is the device pointing to your SD card reader, and /tmp/sd.img is the sd card image file, in Linux you can extract it with this command:
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/tmp/sd.img
And you can write it back on another SD card with this command:
Code:
dd if=/tmp/sd.img of=/dev/sda
in Windows you can use psdread.exe and psdwrite.exe, see the wiki for instructions:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=XdaUtils/psdread.exe
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=XdaUtils/psdwrite.exe
If anyone makes an Original SD ROM of tmobile...Please upload it at ftp. It would help lots of people here in the forum..

My file isn't from teh FTP, its from my phone. I made a b/u before I installed X's rom on day 3 of my MDA ownership. Like I said, I think there's a way to pull the image off the card, but I'm not going to spend my time looking. If some one wants to find me instructions as well as links to programs needed, I'd be glad to post the image.

[TUT]Flashing the easy way

Hey everyone!
Read lots of threads here on the xda-developers forum, many questions, many answers, lots of "good guys" who are willing and able to help (many have helped me, thank you goes to them and all the others).
The bottom line:
Saw many many questions concerning flashing, bad flashes, error messages and so on.
I really don't know WHY people won't go for the easy way?
Flashing from a PC involves a USB connection through Activesync/WMDC, an application, we all know the procedure thanks to racerx_ (http://trinityguides.info). There are so many things that can go wrong: think about it, from unplugging the device, app error, comm error, power drop, connection drop, system hang and so on.
I don't know about the rest of you but I have done it the hard way but also learned to do it the easy/safe way. There's nothing more to the story than flashing from SD card. Procedure is well described in the Wiki (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Trinity_SDCardFlashing).
I mean, all you have to do is press three buttons and wait for the flash, no risky connection drops, error messages, driver incompatibilites (see Vista problems), no app hangs.
I have tried many ROMs from over here and except for my first two flashes (first was Des' Crash Proof SPL, second was a cooked ROM) I've made them all using the SD card method and never got an error nor a situation with it.
So here's the question: why won't people flash the easy way?
well, have you actualy tried this procedure before posting this?

Read my post once again, carefully.
hold Power button on right side and Camera button at same time and stick with stylus in RESET on bottom
This procedure brings boot loader screen, with three colors, it doesn't bring anything similar to that image posted there.

Follow the steps carefully.
1. SD card with FAT32 and no label (it can contain other files, no need to wipe it)
2. Renamed nbh file to TRINIMG.nbh placed on SD card root
3. Power+Camera+Reset
4. Follow instructions on screen (Power button to brgin flash and Soft reset when prompted at the end).
It don't get any easier!
It SHOULD work.
Totally agree, I don't understand why ppl persist with the multitude of errors that crop up from flashing via active sync.
Using the SD card you can chuck a few ROMs on board to test and just rename each in turn to TRINIMG.nbh, move it to the SD root and enter boot loader.
Before I test a new ROM I make a static settings image with SPB Backup so I can flash back to the old ROM and restore back to how it was in a jiffy.
Just to point out for some ppl, some of the ROMs here are packaged into EXEs, you will need to extract the contents and only use the file named RUU_signed.nbh.
This process can also be used to flash Radio ROMs in case you flash a ROM that includes a radio that you don't like/use.
Good thread
P3600i saga continues
I wonder if the SD Card method works on the P3600i? According to the Wiki, it doesn't bypass the SuperCID check.
Olipro has modified his SPL-Trin to work with the P3600i. But so far there's still no definite way to flash it. No Hard-SPL, splxploit don't work, same for JumpSPL. So maybe this is the way? Any opinions?

No, sorry, it's not the way.
Flashing from SD card is not a workaround for bypassing SPL.
You still have to have some kind of a Hard SPL installed.
Please check the Wiki.

...and also bootscreens.
In other words, this method can flash any nbh file which could be flashed through the update utility method.
Easy and reliable
Fully agree with you tnyynt!
I always flash using the SD method.
Sometimes I even download the new nbh and keep it on the SD and upgrade later on when having time, not connected to a Pc... (I also have all the cab I need on my SD card).
Quick, easy and reliable (done many times).
Would be fine if the nbh would be released on this forum (rather than the .exe package).
Would allow to download them directly from the Trinity. i.e.: no more need for a Pc !!!
I always use this method, it is the only one that works for me and it's the most convenient I think.
I tried this method several times, but I was never able to get it work.
Yes I followed instructions carefully, but no. I only get three colored bootloader screen, that's it. No button to start flashing, nor screen that looks like that photo in wiki.
I really wanted this to work, cause I have an OsX. Since I couldn't get it to work I had to install xp and use it as virtual machine. From there everything works just great. Because of that, I still have to have windows on my laptop :-(
Speed
About this method: is it faster, same or slower than usb? (consider an average SD card, no high-speed)

Trouble with ROM flashing

Hey everyone,
I am trying to flash a new rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418320), but I think I have run into a problem along the way. Please forgive me, but I am a very beginner at this stuff.
I was following the steps from this page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2707841&postcount=4035). I have reached step 6, but in stead of a menu appearing, I only get the "loading..." on a gray screen appearing, and it has been like this for the last 15 minutes.
Any idea of what can be wrong? I have Olinex 1.30 Hard SPL.
Any help apprechiated.
Daniel
Need more info. What kind of device do you have? Are you trying to flash a GMS ROM on a CDMA device?
One more thing: what format is your internal storage. I'm not positive, but I think it has to be formatted as FAT32, and it comes as plain FAT. If you didn't reformat it, it might not be able to read your ROM file, and thus you won't be able to flash it that way. You'll have to use a Windows PC and try to flash it that way.
I have the Touch Diamond. I assume it is a CDMA device? I do not know what a GMS rom is really? Please forgive me if I have started something im really not qualified to do. After having read through several guides here, I assumed that flashing a ROM was pretty general as long as I stuck to the right device section?
Who is your phone carrier?
I have a windows PC (vista). However, I chose to follow the steps Suiller (post linked above) explained, as I got the impression it was safer (and faster).
My phone carrier is Network Norway. The phone was bought in Australia in october, but it is unlocked.
Ok, you have a GSM phone (that's the type of radio it uses). I believe you pointed to a GSM ROM, so it should be Ok.
It's probably the formatting. Can you still boot into the phone with the old ROM, or does it only go to the bootloader screen? If you can boot in, try formatting the internal memory (this will destroy all the data, so back it up). If that still doesn't work, try downloading another ROM file. That will let you know if you just got a bad copy of the ROM you want or if there is something wrong with the way you're trying to install it.
Thanks for your help!
