Sending phone back to t-mobile... - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone is malfunctioning, before sending it in to get it replaced, does anyone know if I have to unroot and flash a tmobile rom back to the phone? Or will I be fine? If this has been covered before sorry, flame away, just point me in the right direction because I have searched here and google for a good 2 hours now.

Unroot your phone.

It has been asked before but hey, this is a Q&A forum :].
If you're turning it in with the manufactur's warrenty, then yes, you want to unroot it. If you're turning it in through T-Mobile's phone insurence (recommended) then you will not need to unroot it; that's a no-questions-asked service. Good luck!

Do this just for safety's sake, wouldn't it suck to send it in only to find out your warranty won't cover it just because it was rooted? I mean, all you have to do is flash the RC29 over again and wait for the OTA update to come and its as easy as that... you don't even need the OTA update... just flash the RC29 and you should be good.

Or if you want to be eccentric, brick it and say after you got an OTA update it wouldn't turn on

Haha - I'd say that's a little more sketchy than just returning to RC29.
But your choice.

baq to RC29

hey i flashed the dreaimg.nbh file because i wanted to revert baq to stock
is this all i have to do. ive checked out the threads for it and they just say to flash this file and u will get an ota soon
i juss wanted to make sure it was tru. im on RC29
stock from this and hoping i get an OTA soon
You flashed DREAIMG.NBH to a phone with Haykuro's SPL? I've read that would brick a phone. Evidently not.
Anyway, yeah - if you flashed DREAIMG.NBH and are now on RC29, you're all set. Just wait for the OTA.

b4 i flashed the DREAIMG.NBH i flashed g1 original boot loader into it. but ive done it on haykuro's alot. never bricked. i think its because haykuros spl prevents from brick and the NBH file replaces the SPL to original also

Exactly. Both the SPL and radio are reverted back to stock so you shouldn't brick your phone. I've done this with mine and it didn't brick and I was able to re-flash the Radio/SPL, no problems.

The time is variable for each person as the network might only check your phone version every few hours and it might take till the next cycle for the OTA to be sent to you (I honestly don't know as I have never used the OTA and I'm on AT&T so it would've never been sent to me regardless). I, didn't use the OTA, I only reverted because there was a problem with my phone that necessitated the temporary downgrade. However, shouldn't take more than a day.

Or, you can search for the T-Mobile OTA if you're in a rush, I think its somewhere on the developer's forum. Use search, don't open a new thread, they will hate you for it.

danger spl D=

i had to reroot my phone because somehow i lost the recovery image and it wouldnt let me flash anything
so i went re did everything
and i put the danger spl on here and now its stuck at the Tmobile G1 screen
am i screwed or is there something that i can do
Did you flash the radio first?
no
i didnt i couldnt remember which one was first
Remember when you flash the new spl you HAVE TO flash the rom again after it. Did you do that?
it doesnt even let me get to the recovery image to do that i had just flashed to jf 1.51 btw

if you can't boot into recovery (home and power) or bootloader (camera and power) then your phone is bricked. you can either call your provider or htc and say something about an update, and see if you can get a replacement phone.
can i just go to the tmo store tomarrow? and then they can just give me a new one?

you could try it, sometimes it is better over the phone, but you can try in store.
make sure you sound as dumb as possible, like you don't know anything about xda, rooting, flashing, brick, or anything technical. just say something about an update, then afterward it started back up, that it wouldn't boot.
im mexican so i can be all like

The same exact thing happened to me a few monthes back, I called them and after some bs story they sent out a replacement phone. Then once you get the replacement, you just put your original phone back in the box and ship it back to them.
I have been able to replace a g1 in the store. Just don't take no for an answer. And if you have to take a hostage.

but seriously though, you should try a little harder before resorting to re-rooting. You know that it may not always be possible to fall back to RC29 if HTC decides to change the keys, right? You should learn how to troubleshoot so you wont have to resort to that

Rooted phones would do more harm than good to the average user...
As for your situation, does holding the Camera or Home key not boot you into SPL or recovery, respectively?
It's likely than when you went back to RC29 to reroot, your radio is reverted back along with it, and then you flashed the dangerSPL to brick your phone.

flashing the DangerSPL then the RC29 image should have any detrimental affect on the phone. People has successfully downgraded directly to RC29 with success.
I've read many posts to that extent, but I cannot be 100% as I haven't done it myself

OMG I just flashed my SPL Before my radio >.<!!!!

I just got a new phone from T-Mobile to swap out for my defective unit and I just flashed my SPL before my radio!!! I fuxxed up!!!! Is there anything I can do!????!!!!!??????
what radio did you have? if it was the latest radio to begin with, you are all good. if not, you probably screwed the pooch
Old radio. I was in the process of rooting and thought to myself, "Oh better update the SPL" damn I'm an IDIOT!!! I knew better!!!! >.<
Why is it that every other day someone starts a new thread on bricking their phone?!?! SEARCH! Either way you have a brand new paperweight...I suggest to all that brick their phones...DON'T MONKEY WITH IT! Get a new phone and stick with stock. Cheers
Hi,
Did you already root your phone and flash a modified recovery?
Then copy your firmware to a sdcard as update.zip and you should be able to flash from recovery.

You should return that phone anyway, the Nexus or some new andro with snap dragon will be released or maybe phone with sense?
Seems you lack common-sense for doing what you did. When you think about it that spl is only for spec roms, so things like cyan dont need it.

Dude, if you flash the danger SPL before the radio you can't get past the G1 screen, ie can't get into recovery, fast boot, anything at all! Hence it being the most notorious way to brick's one's G1.

i tells you what you can do. this worked for me. i did the same **** on my replacement g1. i said "when i got the replacement it was running 1.1. i was prompted to update, and i did so. when the phone rebooted it never went past the g1 screen. u have to make big stink about this
i did that and they shipped me one next day air. being that that was the third replacement they sent me within 1 week, and i never had to make an embarrassing thread about bricking my phone
Thanks b0ricuaguerrero that makes me feel a lot better about the phone call I'm bout to make to T-Mobile.
Why does every thread have big-headed flame-whores who just need to feel superior to others?? We all make stupid mistakes and I knew better than to flash the SPL before the radio. I had a stoner moment I guess you could call it. I haven't used a stock rom since I bought the phone when it came out and I don't plan on using one in the future.
I was also thinking.. maybe Armon could add something to the confirmation process of the flash and if the file is *spl*.zip it would remind them they absolutely must flash their radio first. I know some of you might proceed to flame me more, but that probably would have been enough to remind me. Then maybe these brick threads would pop up every week instead of every day XD
I did however post my thread in the correct section though! =P

I agree. I very nearly bricked my phone when first I flashed the new spl. Back then, I was using the old CM recovery (where you had to rename to update.zip), and flashed the update, then renamed the spl, and was about to flash it, but then something told me to double-check... and I realized that the first update I flashed was not the latest radio, but was, in fact, a different update.zip. I was one click away from brick. The thing is, you don't have to be an idiot to brick when you play on XDA.

You SHOULD suggest that idea to Amon-RA about the reminder for anything with spl in it. Sounds stupid, and sure, idiots shouldn't root their phones, but they do. It would certainly help keep the forums cleaner.

HI,
Actually it depends on the mother board in the phone also.
That could be why he can't get into recovery mode.
I was able to get into recovery after flashing the danger spl 8 months ago.
So it can be done sometimes.
Exactly what does your comment add toward helping this member revive his phone? Nothing.

He flashed the spl BEFORE the radio, that always causes a brick, no questions asked. If you flash the spl wrong you cannot get into the OS, Recovery, or Bootloader- essentially you have a very nice paperweight that has a very nice screen

OP, really am sorry to hear you made a mistake you knew better than. Hopefully you can get T-Mo to replace it for you using the "failed update" method.

Bricking your phone.

i am thinking of rooting and modding my nexus one, but i am a little bit afraid of bricking it and voiding the warranty doing so. from what ive read the only way to brick your nexus one atm is to flash the"radio". not exactly sure what the raido is (assuming it has do with carrier/phone frequency).
is there any way to brick your phone besides modding the "radio" which i hope cant happen on accident.
ps:sry if this is a nub question, don't wan to throw 600$ down the toilet.
Okay I really don't quite understand why but EVERY SINGLE DAY there's someone asking the SAME question...
If you search a bit you'll EASILY find an answer to your question.
So, how CAN you brick your phone?
1. Flashing radio and interrupting the process.
2. Flashing SPL and interrupting the process.
NO OTHER WAY.
Cheers.
Possible via subjecting the device to a devastating Solar EMP.
I'm just sayin'.

Yeah, this is kinda misleading.
Here's another way. Flash your SPL (not interrupt it) and NOT flash to a radio compatible with your SPL will brick it to (or vice versa).
If you double check everything and make sure your good, its easy. If you do it when your tired and in a rush, you can brick pretty easily. Killed my magic that that way.
But currently, on a retail N1, we can only brick it with an incorrect/interrupted radio flash... we cannot flash the SPL "yet!!"
Exactly why I never will flash a radio or spl, though I am good at following directions - I don't have any reception issues, or any other problem that would require a radio change.
Just stay away from it all if you don't want to any troubles or worries.
Or it can be like mine and just randomly die.

true, but you have to live on the edge sometime . as others have said don't interrupt the process and make sure you have plenty of battery or you're connected to a power outlet. it can take 5 minutes or so to complete. i was in downtown Boston yesterday/today and ERE27 wasn't working for me... so i flashed ERE36B and it was working much better. go figure. if ERE36B is flaky when i get home, i'll swap back to ERE27.
Though, if you just take your time, not rush, and follow every single instruction (all well written btw, never had a misleading one) you shouldn't have an issue. Just take your time

I thought it would be better to ask here than make a new thread but can you flash a radio strait on the phone and not need a computer? Because I have always thought you needed a computer.
More noob questions.
1)flashing the radio, is there any reason to do so? inst the radio for your carrier, and the only reason to flash it is to unlock the phone (or allow it to be used on a different carrier). mine is unlocked so will i ever have to flash the radio to mod my phone?.
2) flashing SPL, it seems that it is not possible to do so atm for the N1. would there be any reason for me to flash the SPL if im looking to root/use custom roms.
thanks for the replies, sry for nub questions.
flashing the radio is done a few different ways, I prefer the .zip method where you can install it just like a ROM. Very quick and easy.
As far as why you flash them, some people have better luck with different radios. I bounce back and forth between the 3 and haven't found a better one yet. But never the less, newer radios will typically be better as far as signal and connectivity. On my G1, the latest radio bumped me up to 4 bars where before I only had 2....wish there was one for my Nexus that did that! LOL

[Q] Should I flash back to stock?

My headphone jack is pretty much broken (left channel only) and I called rogers and they are sending me a replacement unit, and i have to send mine back to them. My phone currently has Continuum running on it, should i flash it back to stock?
is there anything about how you installed continuum that would void your warranty???
if not leave it alone... dont bother just send it back
Technically you don't have to root to install continuum, but it is rooted after, rooting voids warranty does it not?
it's not that difficult to odin to stock you might as well and not risk it imo
