I followed the exact steps from this forum and everything went smooth, but why is it that i only have 20 mb of free phone memory left after doing a new hero rom flash using jachero 2.7.4, is the apps automatically save to sd, cause if they are i dont think they are saving to the sd card, also do i have to do a linux swap or something like that to make this phone run faster, please help me people.

hero rom is much bigger then the normal G1 rom that is why you are seeing the lag. What is the size of your linux swap and what is your swappiness set to?

well the little room after flash is probably due to the sdcard NOT setup right... I had that build before and the before and so on and the space I had every time was 84mb free after boot and YES the appstosd on this build is automatic. The sdcard should have the fat32 partition first and then the ext2 partition 2nd. To setup the partitions I would NOT use ubuntu .. I ran into mounting issues with gparted .. I have had NO issues with the sdsplit found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3582509&postcount=52
set the 2 partitions first and then setup the linux-swap partition using ubuntu .. I had mine inbetween the fat32 and the ext2 .. and YES you NEED the swap partition in the 2.7.4 build as it no longer uses swapper.

Goodbye to 80% of the members then lol. just keeding. I think people just need to learn how to read the first post of each thread they read. I recommend setting min/max cpu freq to 528, and having linux-swap of 32MB at 20 swappiness. @ demoyo, make sure you have your partitions at the least in this order:
FAT32/EXT3
or if you want a linux-swap:
FAT32/EXT3 (1.5GB or less) /Linux-Swap (32 to 64MB)
The 20MB free internal memory is signaling that your apps to sd isn't working properly, which probably mean you didn't partition your sdcard correctly.

You don't use the Swapper app anymore. As long as you have a linux-swap partition done correctly it is automatic. You can however change the swappiness settings in /system/bin/a2sd (it is the number in echo 30 > ...)

Ideally you need an ext and linux-swap partitions, but if you don't want to for whatever reason you can just install the "Swapper" app from the market. A linux-swap partition is much better but this is the next best thing.

Well said. ANother note is that if you are using the stock 1gb card then you will not notice much speed improvement no matter what you do because of having such a slow SD card. I would not recommend and thing less than a class 4 (Class 6 is the fastest).
If you plan on staying with the stock card you should probably look into another ROM.

I have a rooted G1
& i have jf's 1.5 build with CM's recovery
But the other day out of being scared that i bricked my g1
i flashed to jf but after i thought i "bricked"
i realized that was normal when installing Hero SPL/Radio
So im think of finally flahing to Hero
but theres two options for me
1. flash he spl/radio again then install JAC's Slow SD hero ROm
2. wait till i get paid next week and buy a new 8gb or 16gb
(does the g1 support 16???) then install Jac's Hero Rom but with Apps2SD
oh and if any body out there with JAC's Slow SD rom does it really differ from the A2sd rom(except 4 the obvious)
An does it give you a decent start off of memory like 70mb internal or something
And since i already installed the hero spl/radio do i need to reflash them in order to install the rom
or can i just go ahead and flash the Slow SD rom
And last does Swapper make a difference on the Slow SD Rom
Thanks in advanced
Because i wont beable to read the replies tonight(maybe)

unless you have flashed another spl to your phone you still have the new spl. yes the g1 supports 16gb sdcards. i haven't tried the slow version of hero because i have a class 6 8gb sdcard but you should be able to flash the slow rom just fine. i think it leaves around 30mb of free space but i am not sure and swapper should make it run faster on the slow version set it to 32/30 (swap/swappiness) should give best results. you should invest in a class 6 sdcard though. also if using the swapper app make sure you put the swapfile in /system/sd so it will not corrupt your sdcard when you mount it. if there is anything else i have not covered just ask and i will answer to the best of my ability.
So pretty much since I already flashed the spl/radio from I think it was
Saphire ports or something like I'm able to flash to pretty much any ROM including JAC's Slow SD
With no problems??
And if I flash to JAC's Slow SD ROM today, can I reflash to the A2SD ROM next week when I get a new card
Oh yeah and is there a way to check my spl just to make sure I got the right one?
ohhh and I already know how to check my radio
Go into bootloader (camera+power) SPL:1.33.2005

Well if he goes to JACHero 2.36 he shouldn't use swapper. Just create the linux-swap partition on your sd card and everything is auto from there. You wouldn't want to have the partition and use swapper because that will mess things up. Plus having linux-swap partition compared to swapper makes a huge difference.

Oh and one last ?
Since I'm going to flash to the slow sd rom
When I reflash next week to a2sd jac with my new 4 gig or 8 I'm not sure do I have to prep the card
With the recovery img
Fat32
Ext3 and the linix swap
And it would turn on fine??
Oh and is ext3 a replacement for ext2
So that meaning all my apps on ext3
Music photos etc.. on fat32
And linux swap is what??
I think I'm confused here
I just want to make sure that next week I don't muck up my g1

You won't have to do anything with the recovery img because that is already on your phone. The ext3 is just like the ext2 but suppose to be safer for the card so yes all your apps will be on there and photos, music, videos and everything else on your fat32. The linux-swap is basically like giving your phone more ram. If you need help formating your card I have a tutorial in my sig on how to set everything up.

32MB is a good size. Larger, and you'll get instability. Yes, it is safe to make your ext3 with Paragon. And yeah, you can upgrade an ext2 to ext3 using Cyanogen's Recovery Image if you don't make it ext3 in Paragon.

I've heard a random report or two of people using big swaps, but general experience (personal, plus other users chiming in here) is that as the swap gets bigger, the stability goes down. The system may be fast in the beginning, but as junk collects in your swap it will get laggy.
Honestly, I'm still on 24MB.. Left 32MB of space but only started with 24MB, and it runs fine for me. Keeps my browser in memory when I go reply to a text, that's what I worry about.

Can you change the swap size and the other while in an ROM or do you need to do it in the recovery console and then reflash your ROM?
** Just changed all my setting for swap of 96 MB. ITS SO SUPER FAST ITS UNBELIVEABLE!!!!
I don't think you need to reflash if you can replace the swap partition without affecting the others.
What I mean is I left free space on the end of my SD card so I could experiment with different swap sizes. I've been using 40 on Drizzy Personal V3 but I'm going to try 96 now and see if I notice a difference.
Thank you so much. I gave up on the Hero roms after 1 day due to the lag. Now I am running a 96 mb swap and couldn't be happier!
You should add how to create a swap partition and also how to use Compcache as it could be very helpful. Other than that this looks pretty helpful. I also dont see the need for linux swap in any CM mod since they are very stable and are very smooth. It is an option, but i dont think its at all necessary...
EDIT: Also add how to change swapiness manualy . That would be very helpful...

Well if you you instsll any build the settings on that build are default "i think"
32 swapiness or 20 cant remember and what want to do is set it to 60 so it wont lag and is faster
cuz if you leave it on 32/96 it gets laggy but with 60/96 its the "sweet spot"

force closes
I get plenty of force closes with CM's 4.01. I have compcache. My brother did the linux-swap and said it's been so much better. Some people say CM's rom doesn't need swap??? That boggles my mind. I love his roms and get less force closes than JF, but it's far from perfect when force closes are involved.
you might want to include how to update your ext3 to ext4 for those that so desire it. other than that, great guide.

install swap partition without formatting whole sd?
Thanks for the great guide. Noob here I already formtted my sd card and have apps2sd etc but would like to create a swap partition (running cyonogen 4.0.1 with ext2, ext3)
Is there a way to create a swap partition without having to format the whole sd and recreating ext2 and 3?
Ok Guys, new to this site, hopefully y'all can help me out.
I recently rooted my G1, Installed the latest Cyanogen (4.7.2.1) and installed a theme ( Marks Theme). I dont have very many apps cause I didnt want to bog down the phone memory.....
I love the set up but it started running slower even after I started running the over clocker widget.
My phone is only showing 14.18 MB of free internal memory. I went through my applications installed and can only find around 25 MB being used from all installed apps ( including browser and messaging etc.)
I even tried to do a factory reset ( by going through the settings) and the factory reset is not working. It changed nothing.
Is there something that Im missing? I feel like I should have much more free memory.
I love the way my phone works and the set up, I just wish it had more free memory so that it would run faster.
Ive thought about doing the Apps2SD but I feel like I chould have much more memory on my phone even before doing something like that.
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
This is a question, and as such belongs in the Q&A section. You'll receive a better response to such things there.
The internal memory you're referring to is your /system partition.
It is where the entire OS is stored, basically. Which takes up, in your case, a whopping 55 MB (out of 70 MB).
If you //really// want more room, follow the Apps-2-SD tutorials out there. You'll get /plenty/ of space.
You could always upgrade to the new amon ra and then let it partition the sd card for you. Then you can have all that free phone storage for whatever it is.Bext time just try to restrict yourself from posting in wrong section
-Best regards

Thank you for the quick response. Is there a way to move this thread?
Also is there a better ROM that will take up less memory? I like this version but obviously it is wayy to large.
Anyone else running cyanogen 4.7.2.1 having this issue?
Most people using the Cyanogen ROM also utilize A2SD. Partition your SD card and you'll get more room.

There is no issue, you just don't have an ext partition ergo, all applications are installed to your phone which is why you have low phone memory.

Hi, first of this has nothing to do with development, should be in Q&A. Please remember for next time
OK, when you're on a custom ROM, don't use factory reset. Instead boot in to the recovery image and perform a wipe from there, and that's exactly what I'd suggest. Be prepared to loose everything stored on the phones memory, but you can use a backup app from the market for that... No you really should way more space than that, I can't really explain why...

The phone has two main partitions: /system and /data. It isn't /system that's filling up, it's /data (which makes sense...). The phone can't write to /system when it's unrooted, so it's not possible to store files there...
Everyone is trying to help but for a noob it can be a bit too much...4.2.7.1 is the best Rom available so keep that....RA Recovery is the best way to set up your memory card to accept your apps and keep them there freeing up a ton of space on the phone....simple way to fix is....Just format you sdcard with EXT3 using the RA-recovery v1.5.1 then once your card is formatted just reboot and Cyanogen's rom will move all the apps for you.....will not need to wipe any info on the phone that way...done it many times......Pm me if you need help!!!!

(partition sd card)
The non rooted standard T-Mobile rom is about the same size and will give you about the same amount of free space. There could be a more barebones rom but I think it's just a lot easier to run Apps2SD then to create a rom that might get you an extra 10mb of internal space. This is the fault of the internal memory on the phone being small. The only way to fix that is getting Apps2sd running which if you make a partion of 100mb should be enough to install all the apps you need. Getting a larger SD card for $10 is also another option so you wont have 1/10th of your sd cards storage gone.

EDIT:

You can always try different roms. CM is good and fast, but maybe try dwang 1.13 or Wesgarner version. wg is based on CM. I find it faster and more stable but this is just my opinion. if you back everything up with nandroid and some app like mybackup, you can flash all you want. you'll be able to get everything back with a nandroid/mybackup restore. try different stuff out and figure out what you like!
i searched for this and came up with some links, but none to verify my exact question which is, do i need a certain ROM, or recovery image, i have the RA-dream-V1.5.2. to apply apps2sd, i am currently running the latest cyanogen ROM, do i need a sd card reader or can it be done just by using terminal emulator, and i just bought a 4gb class 6 from new egg, and i was wondering what do you guys recommend for my ext2 partition space to be? so if you guys have any info on this it would be great if you threw it my way thank you!
Most rom have it enabled automaticlly when it sees an extX partition. The recovery is not required, but helpful if you don't have a linux system or other software to create the partitions on your computer. No card reader is required unless you want to format it that way. The only terminal commands you would need would be in the recovery console for you. The space is up to you and your needs and does not increase or decrease performance either way.
See the link below and it will help you doing it the manual way and with Amon_RA's recovery.

thank you, you were a bunch of help, i shall try this when i get home tonight
No problem, let me know how it goes.
it asked me for swap-size and also ext2-size, im not to sure what numbers i need hmm?
If you plan on using a hero rom put in something for swap, if not put zero. The put in the amount of ext you want for apps. (normally between 256-512)
To upgrade the file system from ext2 -> ext3 use the command upgrade_fs in the recovery console.
Look at the link I gave you and scroll down to the Amon_RA section if you need more help.
it said upgrade_fs not found (nvm)
i got ext2 to ext3 thank you for all your help sorry for being a pain dude...
so to make sure i did it right, how much available phone space should i have?
It varies based on the cache you have for the apps, but I have 68mb but I have been running the same rom for a while. It should be around 80mb if you haven't done anything to build the cache, but I have the 1.33.2005 SPL which increases the internal memory size.
I get the same error "upgrade_fs not found" when I want to upgrade to ext 3 from console. From Amon_Ra's recovery I get an error too when I want to upgrade to ext 3. The other SD card I have worked perfectly with exact the same steps. What is wrong? Thanks
if you amon's isnt there an option that says upgrade ext2 to ext3? i guess thats the same?
