Hi Folks,
I finished upgrading my Shift's ROM all the way some time ago (GPS, Phone, +++) and it al works just fine.
I'm not even sure if I have a real "problem" here, but I noticed that after about an hours the SnapVUE side of my Shift just goes dark and I have to issue a "reset" command from the Windows side to get back in.
At this point I'm not even sure if this is some sort of "suspend" mode or a real shutdown.
All I'd like to know is how to get back in (or if it is a suspend mode, how to turn it off), w/o having to start up Windoze first, just to trigger a reset via the cmd line.
You should set up the device to not go to sleep after x minutes. This is in the power settings.

Not sure what happened, but after I had to reset the whole device a few times for unrelated reasons, the problem just went away...
In any case, where do I specify the sleep time for the SnapVUE side of things?
Same as in all WinMo devices... settings>system>power>advanced
OR use file explorer to open "powerexe" in the device's Windows folder (needed if you use Thaihugo's Age of Beauty ROM as the Power option isn't in the system folder in this rom, presumably to save valuable space)

I hestitate to start a new thread to ask this, but I just spent 5 hours reading the Wizard forums and didn't find anything useful. So here goes . . .
I recently upgraded to Cingular_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU22_Basic
(thanks, summiter). I'm happy with everything except the behavior of the password protection.
With the original ROM, I had it set (and don't remember what setting did it) so that I would only be prompted for a password when the device was coming out of standby mode (i.e. when I press the power button to turn the screen back on). Most of the time, I would put the device in "protected mode" by manually pressing the power button, but I also had "turn off after 5 minutes when running on battery" set, so if I left it sitting somewhere, it would go into "protected mode" in a few minutes.
With the new ROM, I've tried setting the "prompt if device unused for" setting to "0 minutes" (the setting I seem to recall I had used with the old ROM), which DOES cause the device to prompt for a password whenever I turn it on, but it also causes the password prompt to appear after 1 minute of idle time. If I use a longer setting, then I don't get the password prompt while the device is on, but when I turned off, and back on again, it doesn't prompt for a password.
I'm not dealing with a high security situation here. I just want a simple way to keep my kids and other prying eyes from accessing the PDA function, with a way for me to force it into locked mode, and some kind of time out for when I set the phone down and forget to lock it.
Is there a way to change my current ROM to get the old behavior? Is there some other program I should use instead of the one built-in to the OS?
Thanks.
Seconding this request. I've been looking for a solution to the same problem.
The password behaviour in the AKU2 ROMs are a real PITA - especially if you use SatNav without first switching off the password protection.
Unfortunately this is down to the implemenation by Microsoft so don't hold your breath for this to be "fixed".
Here's my solution so far:
I bought a copy of Pocket Secure 3.0 for $14
Website: http://www.TotalPocketPC.com
Support: http://www.4winmobile.com/-pocket-secure-support-vf25.html
I associated the progam with the Press and Hold voice button (I don't use voice recording), so when I want to force lock the phone, I just press and hold the button.
Using this program, I've left Media Player and/or TCPMP running in the background, "locked" the phone, and then carried it around in my case without any problems.
The "lock screen" displays battery level and a nice big clock. Since I don't wear a watch, 50% or more of the time, when I'm turning my phone "on" (i.e. switch out of standby mode), it's just to see what time it is.
Moving from the Touch to the Kaiser I love the 3G performance and the built-in GPS however there are two MAJOR issues I have that did not exist on the Touch and I cannot understand why the Kaiser with double the memory suffers from this.
1- Erratic scrolling in IE even after the page has loaded ?
2- My other problem (and this is more serios) is that the device does not turn off after the 1 min settings I set in the Power settings. I do not set the backlight dimming settings. I just want to phone to off itself after 1 min. It does not and if I forget to turn it of it just drains the Batt.
Again, the Touch did not have either of these flaws.
Any help with the power issue would be great.
Thanks in advance

There is a known issue that I and others have been reporting regarding scrolling in PIE. We have not yet identified a way to resolve this. However we have discovered that :
Opera Mini a java midlet based application works well and super fast. A great application for straightforward browsing. No frills but good viewing options and due to the way it works may reduce data charges for some and will certainly impress with its speed. (Freeware)
http://www.operamini.com/beta/
OR
Opera Mobile. Works well and fast, no scrolling issues and actually a pretty good full spec.browser. Not free but has a trial period to test it out. Iuse this and am very pleased with it.

As for your switch off problem, that I think is just a settings issue, but I'd need to check.

Regarding turning off after 1 minute.
I suggest you go back into:
Start?Settings>system>Power icon>advanced tab
Uncheck turn off device after 1 minute, click OK.
May be best to perform a soft reset.
Now go back and recheck "turn off device" after 1 minute
Perform a test to see if the one minute turn off is now working, and report back here on success or otherwise.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the feedback. I unchecked the power setting to turn off after 1 min, power cycled the phone and set it again. The phone does NOT power off.
I power cycled one more time and still i does not turn off.
Can you please verify this behavior ?
Nothing is checked in the backlight options and ONLY "Turn off device if not used for" 1 min is checked under "On battery power".
The phone never turns off on its own.
Thanks again,

I tested this before making the above post. I tried different time settings and it powered off at the set time. So I can only think that either some application is keeping it "alive" ie. not "idle" so the time trigger never starts or this is something that will only be cured with a hard reset.
If you have killed all running applications and it still will not auto sleep then hard reset may be the only option. If you have full backup facilities this should be a painless operation, though if you reinstall the backup and the problem is caused by an installed application then the problem will return on backup installation.

The only app that is running ( that I can see ) is Activesync due to push email. This was the case with the Touch so I do not think it is Activesync that is keeping the phone from turning off.
Thanks anyway for your efforts...
Found the problem!
Well it looks like Activesync (DirectPush) is the problem.
If I kill ActiveSync the phone turns itself off at the established timeout. If ActiveSync is running (with DirectPush active) it does not turn off. Again, on the Touch this was not the case so it is not proper behavior.
Any ideas or reg settings to correct this?
Thanks.

There may be, but I at least don't know them. There are reg keys that tell the device to suspend but keep an application running (sometimes known as "unattended mode". However we know yours does suspend when AS is not running. I just wonder whether there are any "sync" settings within your push mail client that may be running a sync too frequently.
Another, but more remote possibility is that when AS is active it may also be servicing other apps, like weather apps, time sync etc - so perhaps just worth checking there are no other less obvious apps running. AS can also rather stupidly attempt to sync with the PC even if you are not connected to it. So perhaps double check any AS settings.
Mike
I played with the ActiveSync settings and the only way the phone turns off while AS is running is if I disable DirectPush. On manual sync or periodic sync the phone turns off at the proper timeout.
Any idea where DirectPush settings are ?
Thanks
I've this same problem NOW, but I've working over a month with activesync and pushemail active without this issue!!!!! (My configuration was also "as items arrive")
The only thing I can say is that today i suddently saw my exchange settings had been dissapeared without doing anything, then I reconfigured the exchange setting again, and from that moment my kaiser does not suspend if "as items arrive" is selected!
I have the same problem with the phone not switching off, though on mine it doesn't matter whether direct push is on or off, it still won't power down.
Edit: Now that's typical. As soon as I submitted the above and started playing with it, it started working...
I have a couple of this I would like to change and don't know how. first how do I keep the phone from going into standby mode. it seems to take about 5 minutes for the phone to enter a standby mode and I was hoping to turn that off or extend that time.
next, whenever I use the phone the screen turns off which is a pisser if I need to use the keypad to navigate a menu system for voicemail or to connect to an operator. can I change that behavior so that the screen stays on during calls?

For the first item that you are talking about...I don't know how to change it longer than 5 min. Honestly I would not change it from 5 minutes unless you don't care about battery life.
For the second part I use a program called KaiserTweak. This enables my screen to be on during calls, which is very handy for looking up contacts, etc.
There is also a lot of other tweak that are associated with this program.
To use KaiserTweaks...simply place the two files into a folder on your Kaiser or storage card. Click on the .exe file. After selecting the tweak you want to use, simply turn off your phone and turn it back on. Don't perform a soft reset or else your tweaks won't be enabled. Hope this helps.
Below is the post concerning KaiserTweaks.

My backlight stays on when ever i get a text or a call. Even if i hangup, it still stays on and then i have to manually dim it. Its damn annoying, as my fone is not always with me. Ill come home and the thing would be flat due to a text early the morning and the backlight staying on the whole day.
I did a hard reset a while ago and that seems to cure it, but when i backup my data, the backlight issue is back.
I almost want to think that active sync is the culprit. dont know how or why, but it has some influence on the phone. Any Ideas?
thanx
Check your backlight (dim after X minutes) and power (turn off after Y minutes) settings?
Turn off backlight if device is not used for - 10seconds (battery power)
Turn off backlight if device is not used for - 1 minute (External power)
thats the current setttings?
Do you have your phone connected to the PC via activesync (usb or bluetooth) all day?
No, not at all. Bluetooth is off, wifi is off, its just idling. If i get a text or a call it stays on.
when i do connect to the pc its via usb
Have you installed any non standard applications that adjust the backlight???? I had the same problem when I used wm5 Ipaq programs on my TyTN.
not at all. I recently did a hard reset.
then plugged it into the pc a couple of times. So i gathered activesync connected a few times and now its giving me the same old crap
Did you install Manilla TouchFlo?
nope. there is only oem software on the fone

KaiserTweak is just what you need! You can change all the 'sleep' options around, without having to dive into the registry.

Hi all,
I frequently charge my X1i through USB. There are 2 problems with this method, however.
1) The device goes into USB drive mode, disabling my SD card apps (I keep them on SD card AT ALL TIMES due to frequent backups/restores)
2) Screen does not turn off! while connected to computer! The screen only dims, but does not turn off.
WITHOUT resorting to a) plugging into wall outlet b) connecting to Activesync, is there any to fix these behaviors?
Thanks!
just let it go into activesync mode, that way you can still access your files on your phone and micro sd card from both your pc and phone. And if you dont like the screen not turning off, they just change the settings or just press the power button, to shut off the display.
I know about the power setting, but when your computer is connected to the computer via USB, it refuses to turn off the screen (only dims it)
what? one simple button press and the screen is off. the device is still visible to the pc. I do it all the time - r3a generic uk rom.
in power options u can set after what time it disables screen... default is never

Weird. When I'm connected to Pc, it dims the screen, it does not shut it off. Also, it does NOT auto-shut of screen after the 2 minutes specific in the Power options
You can also use "safely remove devices" to disconnect the data connection from the phone, it'll still charge.
There's nothing we can do AUTO. But like said before, a simple pression on the power button will do it, or you can use My Mobiler and press F11 on your PC.

Yep, I've had 5 different WinMo devices since '05 and they all worked as expected except the X1. I like to use it as an MP3 player at night, Pocket Player has a sleep timer built in so I just like to leave it running as I drift off most nights. But if I do anything, change the volume, rewind, anything at all the screen comes back on and stays on until I hit some other button to turn it back off. All my other devices obeyed the settings you set in the Power tab, but not the X1...
I'd very much like the screen to auto-off if I tell it to while on USB power. It's not only wasting power, but it wakes me up and gets me fumbling for the tiny power button at 2 in the morning. Any fix would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Peter
I bumped up thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561832 Since it has a better title and shows the exact same unresolved issue...
Reg Fix
Adding this potential fix here as well so anyone subscribed to this thread sees it.
Ok, I think I have a fix for this. I googled around some more and found that this might be an HTC problem more than an SE one. There were various registry keys people suggested to try to fix the 'backlight problem' - which may or may not be related. None of those suggestions seemed to work, but I kept changing keys myself and eventually found this seemed to do the trick.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\Timeouts\ACUserIdle: 120
I confirmed that changing this value affects the amount of time before my X1's screen turns off - but my MP3s still play with the screen off and my phone wakes on receipt of a new call. This value is the # of seconds before the screen turns itself off (in this case 2 minutes). You do need to soft reset for the change to take effect.
This doesn't seem to be posted anywhere else that I've found doing this to fix this issue issue - I changed a few other registry keys as well that might be enabling this fix. So anyone with this problem, please do give this a try and if it doesn't work I'll post the other keys I changed as well - and if it does then post to say so and we're good
Peter
Update: I tested it also while hooked up to the computer and it does work with the phone accessible through active sync with the screen off and the battery charging (faster now that it isn't competing with the screen for power, except for the 2 minutes before it times out). If I want to use it I just click a button and the screen stays on till I leave it alone for 2 mins and it remains off. Get a call or a message and the screen goes on for 2 minutes and then off - Exact same behaviour on AC and USB - exactly the behaviour I wanted .
