Hi all - my poor Kaiser has suffered the dreaded RLOD. Tried every possible fix short of a new battery... which I should get in the mail this week.
If the phone itself is bricked, what would people recommend in terms of a replacement/upgrade? I'm in Canada on Rogers so it has to be a GSM phone. Generally use it for business apps.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Slider keyboard, Touch Pro II or AT$T Tilt 2: Screen keyboard, Touch HD. Or wait for HTC's rumored ( and I think just a rumor, complete with " leaked " photoshopped pics) superphone, the HTC Leo.
"Tilt II" or (cheap) Kaiser
I was in the same position a couple days ago.
I decided to replace mine with another Kaiser. And I got the part to fix my dying phone as well, for a bit more. Less than $200 spent for two.
In good condition a Kaiser can be had for well under $150.
A fixer-upper can be pieced together for well under $100. (you've torn a Kaiser apart a few times? New screen, etc?) Parts are cheap and a junker to fix (Broken screen or hinges...) is almost free.
But if I were willing to have a contract, the Tilt II or a variant with number keys across the top... sure looks good. I haven't compared the size and weight, but since I already carry a tiny brick, it would be fine, I'm sure. I understand it's better in a few ways. (Audio jack, Screen resolution) and with more horsepower, the screen updates may be quicker, accelerated drivers or not!
I went with the Kaiser, but I did not know about the Tilt II until after I had purchased. Saved me some money, and now I have a backup with identical (but not as pretty) hardware.
Seems like win-win with either platform!

Not sure what to suggest re a replacement (and your budget will likely come into it as well) but how about detailing all the fixes you've tried - you may have missed one or two and there have been extensive posts on the topic here. It'd be much preferable, I'm sure you agree, to fix it at low or nil cost rather than having to buy a replacement.
Hey guys - first off, thanks for the suggestions above. The offerings from my carrier are weak (best right now is Touch Diamond) but I may look for an aftermarket Tilt 2.
Flying Kiwi, I would definitely be happy to get my Tilt working again - even just to squeeze a few more months out until the Hero is available here. I've read through every thread I could find about RLOD and haven't had any luck. Its actually the second time I've had the red light... the first time was about three months ago. I left the SIM and battery out overnight and the next day it came back to life... but my battery life was severely shortened after that. I could barely get 8 hours out of it before it was at 0%.
On Friday of last week it ran out of juice completely and RLOD was waiting for me in the morning. I tried leaving the battery and SIM out as before and I actually did get the amber light back at one point. I immediately plugged the charger in and hoped it would be fine like last time. Unfortunately the red light was back about 2 minutes later.
Based on the various posts on the subject, I've tried pressing buttons in a specific order, tried "jump starting" the battery, cleaned the contacts, etc... not even a hint of life. That's why I'm thinking that a new battery might be the only chance I have left. But if you know of any other methods I'd love to try!
Man, I miss my phone.....
Sounds familiar

If you do have a known fully charged battery (perhaps borrowing a friends one) it'd be worth performing a hard reset. It does sound like a spot of the same trouble I briefly had a year or so ago though and I rectified it very quickly with a careful, thorough contact clean (both the spring contacts and battery terminals). I realise you've said you performed a contact clean but what did you use and how did you do it? I don't know if you're aware but it's possible for invisible film to ruin the connection and what looks like a clean connection could still be to blame... If you have a cradle charger, you could also try charging the battery in that before fitting it and perfoming a hard reset. They're cheap enough to buy and enable you to charge 2 batteries at a time (1 in the phone and 1 in the cradle bay).
No luck.... just tried to clean it again with acetone and still the red light. Twas a good thought though!!
And I've searched around for a replacement battery but no one around here has this particular phone... its not generally available up here so I bought one from eBay.
Contact cleaner is cheap enough

I wouldn't give up on that being a cause, especially given the 2 mins on charge scenario. I suggest you use the product specifically designed for such cleaning jobs, contact cleaner (and apply it with the end of a cotton bud soaked in the stuff). A few gentle rubs with this will ensure it's electrically connecting fine.

I bought a battery (and cradle charger bundle) from eBay for my Kaiser and although it works, the quality certainly wasn't up to the original one that came with the phone. It doesn't fit as well either and causes the back cover to protrude a little rather than sitting flush. Twas very cheap though

hehe, ok I'm not particularly patient
I will definitely leave it charging overnight and hope that it decides to spring to life. My biggest concern is that the red light stays on even if the battery out - while plugged in of course. Just makes me think the phone itself is pooched.

I wish I'd thought of that before ordering this new battery... although if it works I'll likely order another battery and cradle as a back up right away.
Although now that I'm looking at these Touch Pro 2s on eBay they're looking very tempting.

You needn't think that because the battery has to be installed (and working) for the phone to run - I'd definitely suggest you don't try charging without a battery installed again. This is because some electronic circuits which are designed to be run under load can sometimes be damaged if powed up while not loaded (PSUs inside PCs are a good example). It's worth buying a small can of specialist contact cleaner. It's cheap enough and will do the best job possible in the situation if used with some cotton buds/Q-Tips.

You mustn't have got to the bit with the price in it then (nor checked whether they have full Qualcomm accelerated graphics driver support to perform optimally for an MSM72xx chipset device) Still, they do appear to be an improvement over the Kaiser if only a limited one.
I'd definitely suggest you don't try charging without a battery installed again.

Um how do you charge a battery without it being in the phone? Seriously you have the strangest advice ever..
? get another battery and hard reset to the phone to fix the red light? Wouldn't the friends battery just show you that he needs another battery?
Dear person with broken phone. Try your new battery, Good luck..
Seems like the original battery is worn out and the phone has drained every drop. Most likely there are some capacitors or something that aren't getting charged because of the charger board not having power.. I've seen devices that work like this, there isn't enough juice to start it up and charge the battery or even power the phone properly. I'm sure there is some sort of small bios type battery on there that is drained as well.
Giving it my best shot

I give up, how do you charge a battery without it being in the phone? It is possible to plug in the charger and power it without a battery installed however (although the phone wont boot in this state) and this may cause damage.

It may but a hard reset may also show that some corruption in the ROM may be to blame or contributing to the problem and of course a hard reset isn't possible with a flat battery. I'm not willing to rule either out as a potential cause of the problem at this stage.

Something we agree on again ChumleyEX, see we do have alot in common you know. I even like cats too
Well damn, I can't say anything negative to someone that likes cats.
Hey guys - I appreciate all of the advice, really do.
Good to know that the red light should be on while charging with the battery out... not something I was doing for a long period, just happened while I was trying the various fixes. Hopefully the new battery comes in and works because I wouldn't be rushing to drop $700+ on a Touch Pro 2.
Oh and I like cats too.
Wanted to provide a (late) update. My Kaiser's problem was purely battery-related. I finally got a new battery today and the RLOD cleared up right away.
Not sure if it will come back or whether my battery life will be compromised, though...
So today I had my G1 in my pocket with headphones plugged in and listening to audio, as I often do. Then I decided to go down a short plastic slide at a kids playground in a park I was passing thru.
About half way down the slide I get this very abrupt odd sensation, as if I'm hearing and also feeling a loud pop. At first I literally thought someone threw something at me. Then suddenly I realize I must have gotten shocked from my phone. I take a look at the phone, see that it is off. I try to power it off, nothing happens. I try a different battery, still nothing. I try taking out the sim card and sd card and then try each of the batteries again. Still nothing. I'm not sure if it's off any matter, but when I was shocked, the phone had the larger Seido battery (2600mA I believe). The only thing I can get the phone to do is when I plug it into a power charger without a battery in the phone, a whine comes out of the front speaker.
So I have two questions, can anyone explain what happened to my phone which made it stop working.
And is there anything I can try to revive it? What should/shouldnt I say to Tmo if I take it to them to try getting it replaced?
Does this kind of thing happen often? I know pools and phones don't work, but I'd never heard about needing to take your phone out before going down a slide...
Going down a slide depending if its plastic or metal creates a LOT of static build up. You might have literally electrocuted your phone.
Lol when I had a Windows Mobile phone, the Tmobile WIng/htc Herald I would go to touch my phone after jumping on a trampoline and the shock would reset the phone
Owned.. Try getting a replacement.
Wow...
that's ironic man.
That's...wait for it...shocking!
Sorry for your loss.
Cooked.
Bad move having the earphones plugged in -- that's like an enormous static electricity conductor.
Just for fun, have you tried putting in the stock battery? It definitely won't turn on without *any* battery. If you are *really* lucky, you may have just cooked the chip on the battery, although this is (in my opinion) extremely unlikely (but at least worth trying -- nothing to lose).

Thanks for the responses.
The slide was plastic.
And yes I did try with both batteries, nothing different.
I stopped in a Tmo store today, and they tried everything I tried, and had the same result. So they ordered me a new phone, I guess it was under warranty since its less than 1 year. But they told me if they find physical or water damage I will be charged $135. Think I have any reason to be concerned? I told the rep at the store what happened, but he assured me it would be fine.
I'm just surprised thing doesnt happen a bit more often. I feel like busting a Mcdonalds lady and suing someone! I just can't decide if it should be htc, tmo, or the maker of the slide?
have you tried to shock your phone again? kinda like EMS would do on a patient with no pulse? it may just shock you battery back... rub your socks on some carpet, rub your hands on balloons, or just jump on a trampoline like suggested.

To start with, since YOU fried it, technically, there should be no warranty, so $135 is cheap to buy a new phone.
Second, if they want to detect physical damage, they'll have to very carefully slice open all the chips on the board and examine them with an electron microscope. Basically, it would cost them tens of thousands of $$ to prove that its physically damaged in order to get $135 out of you... and even then, they wouldn't be able to prove that it was due to you hitting it with static electricity or due to an internal short.
Wow. (Note to self: leave my phone on a bench or something before being forced down plastic slides with relatives/friends small children. I think kids come statically charged naturally;p )
I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this also. Sometimes my milestones touch screen start goin all crazy an pushing buttons an sliding pages an pretty much making a huge mess. This has happened before, an it went normal after 4 to 5 hours later, an now its happening again. I did some research sayin somethin about the touch screen an its reaction to humidity an stuff, but i wasnt sure. So im hoping someone here knows what is up an can tell me what i have to do.

no, it doesnt happen jus when its chargin, it happens randomly, an no its not a stock charger, but i dont see what that would have to do with the screen goin crazy pushing everythin

Well, I would suggest that you try reverting back to using the stock charger for a few days and see if that helps. Using other chargers (esp from ebay) can cause similar effects on the Milestone/Droid due to voltage variances.
ill give it a try, an let you know what happens, thing is i bought the phone alone with no stock charger, so im gonna have to check on ebay for a stock one, but thanks again

Well, try buying a stock one from an authorized Motorola dealer. Every since I purchased one on ebay, I always make sure my Moto chargers come in a sealed, hard plastic, package in attempt to improve authenticity (However, I'm not sure how much that buys me).
Good luck.
I get this same issue.
Unplugged or not, on various roms from stock to motofrenzy.
sometimes the screen will just become really crazy.
If i open a webpage and just hold my finger on the screen in one place it will zoom in scroll up and down, all sorts.
I verified what was happening by downloading Multitouch visualiser 2 from the Market.
A reboot always fixes the problem
Its kinda frustrating, because i know that Moto just direct you to the place of purchase and i was not the original purchaser, so i have no chance of a warranty repair.
yeah ive tried everything, its driving me up the wall, its been like this for the last 30 hours,an i cant even use the phone, this is the worst it been, it usually goes away after 5 to 6 hours , but now its jus gone crazy, an ive restarted an removed the battery countless of times
but burko, are you using a sock wall charger or a ebay or differant brand wall charger.thanks

I actually use a BlackBerry charger, as i assumed Micro-Usb would be the same for all manufactures, but as above, it does start the screen going mad, as soon as i unplug it, it stops!
Ill see if i can make it go mad without being plugged in!
Good shout Knowthenazz!
That happened with me, when the temperature degree outside is very high, I live in region the degree reach to 48degree, my phone screen goes crazy, so I think your charger make your phone very hot, so the sensitivity of your screen begin not work properly. I'm note sure, just want to share my idea.
Thanks,
well its been about 4-5 days already, an my phones touch screen still goin crazy, i thought maybe id go back, like the other times, but this time seems permanent an its extremely depressing thinkin about it cus i jus got it like a week and a half ago off a guy.ive tried countless of chargers, even my bros motorola backflip charger, an nothin. so im gonna assume its permanently gone. i would switch the digitizer but thats gonna cost money an might jus lose the entire phone, so im jus gonna throw it back on ebay an go back to my htc hero an jus wait for the milestone 2 to come out. but if anyone does find a solution please post it here. thx everyone R.I.P. All chargers using the micro USB spec should be the exact same voltage (and different current ratings depending on the charger, although different current values shouldn't affect your screen at all). I suspect that the voltages are very close, if not generally the same, but, the voltage may slightly fluctuate (or ripple) over time, which I believe may be causing the issue. The better quality the charger, the more constant the voltage.
If I were you I'd purchase an authentic Motorola Micro USB charger, and call it a day.

Go to a service center asap!
Dude, use your warranty. Take it to a service center.
Mine happened the same, and I decided to send it back to motorola and just got it back yesterday.
They replaced the glass screen and the frame which surrounds the glass.
It seems they removed that plastic from behind the screen on the slider, or also replaced the slider module.
I'd guess it might be a known issue for motorola, because my phone had scratches on the glass, plus a small crack on the screen ( yeah, I know, it's gorilla glass, but I'm an orc with mobiles ), the metal frame was all dented, and they replaced it anyway, when they could just said "this is misuse, it's failing because you drop it several times, go buy another one"
I already had this issue a few months before, it got better and I decided to keep on, and then it started again and got unusable, so don't get excited about it getting better, because probably will eventually start failing again.

Hello Xda,
This is my first post here although I've lurked for quite some time looking for answers and help.
I just got my droid 4 over winter break and I have been loving it since. The update to JB was nice but it took me some time to get it right because I am specialâ„¢.
Anyways, here's my problem: A few weeks ago I was napping on a couch and I rolled over and the phone fell to the ground screen down. Later that morning the touch screen started acting erratically where it would not work until i locked and unlocked the phone. After having that happen a few times later that day the touch screen went out completely. I rebooted the phone by holding the lockscreen down and using the keyboard to select power off. When I turned it back on even the lock screen had started being screwy, which leaves me to where I am now. The lock screen locks the phone perfectly, but it i have to hit it multiple times and hope that it will turn on in the next 5-10 before trying again. The touch screen still does not work. I have read around and saw that it could be the digitizer. I took the phone apart once to make sure nothing was loose anywhere before I bought it and since that did not fix the phone I went ahead and purchased a new digitzer. I just finished installing it and I'm still having the same issues. So xda, I'm lost.
I really don't feel like buying a new phone and I'd love to try and repair this. Does anyone have any ideas on where the problem could be? I checked the pins on the back of the mobo and they looked fine. I just left the phone on a bit too long and got about 2 weeks worth of texts so it still runs smoothly..just without a damn touch screen.
Thank you for your help and reading this wall of text!
Edit: I just realized lockscreen is meant to be lock button in the title, sorry for any confusion!

Wow! That's bizaare. I can safely say that I've dropped my Droid 4 multiple times in the year that I've owned it, including on hard surfaces, and I've never had any problems as such. Sorry to hear about your troubles.
This sounds like a pretty in depth hardware issue, and I think it's beyond my scope of knowledge, But, I would like to ask, did you buy the phone from a third party? Or directly from your service provider? Because if you bought it from your provider, I was going to ask if you had insurance on the phone. If not, that sort of issue may very well be under warranty, depending on when the phone was manufactured. But, you probably voided it if you opened it up and changed a component in it
The only other advice I can offer, outside of buying a new phone, would be to take it to a third party repair shop. If you're in the U.S., Verizon has an independent franchise called Wireless Zone that I believe does phone and tablet repairs. I'd see if there's one in your area. Me personally, I think I'd just avoid the hassle and buy a new phone, but it's up to you. Not sure how much you can find a D4 for on eBay or Craigslist these days, but I'd go that route. Sorry I can't be more help. Good luck!

Me personally, I think I'd just avoid the hassle and buy a new phone, but it's up to you. Not sure how much you can find a D4 for on eBay or Craigslist these days, but I'd go that route. Sorry I can't be more help. Good luck!

I had dropped it many times(I'm very clumsy with my phone) before that. This was not even the worst drop of them all so it really confuses me too. I did buy it off ebay so there was no hope for warranty which is why I went down the try and fix it myself route. I did exactly as you said a few days ago. I gave up and bought another one off craigslist. A case is already on the way too so this does not happen again. My theory is that the connections from the front half of the phone(the led/digitizer, etc) where the two pieces attach back to the circuit board have gone bad somehow. I zombiefied the phone with just the circuit board and the screen to see if pressing in different spots would fix anything but to no avail. I'm just going to hold on to it for awhile and mess with it in my spare time now hehe. Thanks for the advice!
Edit: I just wish Motorola would come out with the Droid 5 or some other new smartphone with a keyboard. I guess I'm old school but I can't go with a touchscreen only phone

Ah, ok. Well, that's still pretty crazy that it happened. Sorry for the delayed response, but anyway glad to hear that you've got a new one on the way, and a new case coming too.
Yeah, I'm the same way. I got the D4 cuz I really like having a keyboard. Unfortunately, it looks like it may be the last keyboard phone to come out for a while, if ever. But on a sidenote, a lot of the newer phones with big screens have really good touchscreens that I think wouldn't be so bad to type on. My girlfriend's GS3 is awesome. I think I could get used to it. And even if you get touchscreen only phone, I do believe that there are a number of third party keyboards you can buy that will plug into the phone. That will probably be the way to go in the future.
So, I have had my Nexus 6 it came out... I have always boasted about how ungodly huge it was for a phone, and how amazing it was for literally everything.
I installed ROM after ROM after ROM after ROM and on and on and on...
I showed everyone I met how having stereo speakers facing front with a huge screen put any new flagship to shame.
I loved making the comment that this was the only phone i knew that the speakers could actually get waaaaay TOO LOUD.
This was even the only phone I didnt run at full audio.
If someone was showing a youtube video, or even looking at images I'd scoff while pushing away their phone and whip my Nexus 6 out for viewing or research pleasure.
I found satisfaction and relaxation in rubbing the dimple in the back.
This phone was even the original fidget spinner. I constantly found myself spinning it on a table while talking, listening, concentrating. I'd make designs on the screen with the smudges of my finger.
And now, its dead. One flawed "waterproof phone bag" and its dead. I feel like I am in mourning. Nothing new is any good. They're sleeker, faster, all fancy - but they aren't the Nexus 6.
Maybe the Pixel 2 will be the new puppy I get - or maybe i just get another Nexus 6. It's sooooo ironic that after 2 years, there is NOTHING as satisfying as this phone.
What do you think i should do?
R.I.P n6 T_T . I hope nothing bad happens to my nexus.
@ph0tiC: Buy another one on Swappa.
how long was it wet? fresh or salt water? perhaps the battery shorted? mine took a dunk in the lake with no ill effects. I have a 32g phone that i purchased with a bad battery and robbed the screen when mine broke. . Maybe a motherboard swap could work? Willing to donate. Perhaps a new battery? could do a good cleaning while apart too. Who knows....

I agree, I have been able to save a few phones from drowning by taking it all apart and giving it a thorough cleaning with 90 percent alcohol
Call motorolla. Mine was dead also. Wont even turn on or anything. Called then for a replacement and they cahrged me for $175 before tax mine was 64gb maybe 32 is cheaper. They sent me like almost new conditon. Im happy that my n6 is alive again.

I due an upgrade and have looked at ever phone on the market but none compare to the n6, so I feel your pain
gonna flash this baby to give it a new lease of life, just need to decide what to go with.
Some leftover new-in-box 32gb blue stock just went up for sale on dailysteals for $220. Can't post outside links yet but it's a quick Google away.
My n6 is still going strong but I picked one up as a backup anyway. As far as I'm concerned, this phone is the Android high-water mark. It has all been downhill from here.
