Getting app_s --> ext2 helpp - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok.. ive been on a mission to install the hero UI on my g1.
my phone is rooted, has the latest SPL and RADIO.
I flashed the hero rom and it worked.. yet there was nothing on the home page. Although if i hit send to dial, or shut the screen off it comes back locked, and gives me the dial pad. im assuming that was becuase of the no app_s on my ext2. right...?
i tried the ADB push, the ubuntu linux... it DOES NOT HAPPEN FOR ME!
(also cant install apps2sd on my phone for whatever reason)
could ive searched and searched this site with no direct answer, and no success.
If somebody could please walk me thru getting app_s to my ext2 via terminal,CP, something.. or even get apps2sd to work and ill do it 1 by 1.. IDC!
thanks in advance.
UPDATE: HAVE INSTALLED APPS2DS2 SUCCESSFULLY AND RUNNING 1.5 [CYANOGENMOD-3.6.5] FROM APPS2SD HOW DO I GET THESE APPS FROM APP_S ONLY MY EXT2 PARTITION? PLEASE HELP ME DO WHAT I NEED TO DO TO GET APP_S TO MY EXT2 AND LOAD HERO ROM!!!

apps2sd happens automatically with the newer ROMs. You don't need to do anything except have properly set up partitions for it to take effect. What size is your ext2 partition and is it the 2nd partition on your card?

fat 32 - 1gb
ext2 2nd partition - 700mb
and yes, the card is properly partitioned

Fat32 should be first, and both fat32 and ext2 should be set as primary.

What hero rom are you trying to load? You shouldn't have to appy app_s to the ext partition. But the easiest dummy proof way of moving it would be to boot into ubuntu and you can just copy and paste.

ubuntu WILL NOT! let me copy ANYTHING to my EXT2 partition.
It says i dont have the permissions to copy things to my card on ubuntu?
Even though it recognizes the partition.
And YES, BOTH PARTITIONS are set as primary

Newbie Needs help on rom flashing

guys i need a bit of help..
I had rooted my HTC Dream, plus latest radio and SPL.
Then I flashed to JF's 1.51 rom..i have yet to upgrade to the latest hayo SPL.
I wanna try out Dude's cupcake or ramjet's rom..
I need to know if I have to partition my SD card to ext3 first before flashing? Can it be done without converting it to ext 3? or leave it as fat32?
However i don't understand what is ext2 /ext3 to SD.
What is it? the defaults = ext2?
how do i partition it to ext3?
So after flashing all apps would be install automatically to the sd card?

The only time you will need a ext2 or ext3 partition is if you are going to do apps2sd. If you do you need to partitions either ext2 or ext3 and fat32. Use ubuntu to create the partitions. There are a ton of threads covering all this.
Thank you sir..
However is there any way other than a utbunu os? Can it be done with winxp?
Can I install ramjets rom without app2sd?
I am confused with abn app with terminal wats that?
So I presume ext2/3 is a linux partition and I did to have that in order for apps2sd to work?

There is other ways. But you can run ubuntu as a live cd without having to install anything. But if you don't want to use that then there is paragon which you can use on winxp. Also there are scripts to run which will create a partition for you but me personally i would want to format it myself. You don't need apps2sd for ramjets rom, but if you do have your card partitioned (needs ext3) it should do everything for you. Don't really understand when you said your confused with abn app with terminal. If your talking about terminal emulator, that is a place where you can run commands like adb.

Easier way to partition SD with CM 4.0.2?

Hey im currently using Cyanogen's mod 4.0.2 on my original 1gb sd card, i know the apps2sd is automatically built in to the rom, however is there an easier way to create the partition on the sd card without all the commands and such? im still a noob to any help is appreciated..thanks

Install Ubuntu and use Gparted
There's a script called SDsplit
there's also a script to partitoin that 51dusty made. Or you can stop being lazy and just type them it. It takes no more than 5min to do.
Or you can flash JF 1.51 adp because it doesn't use the sd so you're safe to partion the sd card and use partted in recovery. JAC has the directions on his Jacxhero ROM page. Thats what i use. Works everytime.

Before I started using "parted" I used apps2sd 2 (in the market).
The trick is to make sure you don't let it run the actual apps2sd but only use it to create the partition.
CM's does it better (and you might break something!!!).
If you don't have a ext partition and run apps2sd 2 it lets you create one.
Don't make the partition more than 500mb-530mb.
By the way, it only makes an ext2 partition so if you want ext3 go to console and and upgrade_fs.
Dusty's method in parted is much better!
This is just what I did before I stopped being lazy.

The one I'm talking about is called sdparted found here
the script provides 3 partitions... you may not need the swapper. try to make it manually, its easy!!!

apps2sd question

i searched for this and came up with some links, but none to verify my exact question which is, do i need a certain ROM, or recovery image, i have the RA-dream-V1.5.2. to apply apps2sd, i am currently running the latest cyanogen ROM, do i need a sd card reader or can it be done just by using terminal emulator, and i just bought a 4gb class 6 from new egg, and i was wondering what do you guys recommend for my ext2 partition space to be? so if you guys have any info on this it would be great if you threw it my way thank you!
Most rom have it enabled automaticlly when it sees an extX partition. The recovery is not required, but helpful if you don't have a linux system or other software to create the partitions on your computer. No card reader is required unless you want to format it that way. The only terminal commands you would need would be in the recovery console for you. The space is up to you and your needs and does not increase or decrease performance either way.
See the link below and it will help you doing it the manual way and with Amon_RA's recovery.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Apps2SD
thank you, you were a bunch of help, i shall try this when i get home tonight
No problem, let me know how it goes.
it asked me for swap-size and also ext2-size, im not to sure what numbers i need hmm?
If you plan on using a hero rom put in something for swap, if not put zero. The put in the amount of ext you want for apps. (normally between 256-512)
To upgrade the file system from ext2 -> ext3 use the command upgrade_fs in the recovery console.
Look at the link I gave you and scroll down to the Amon_RA section if you need more help.
it said upgrade_fs not found (nvm)
i got ext2 to ext3 thank you for all your help sorry for being a pain dude...
so to make sure i did it right, how much available phone space should i have?
It varies based on the cache you have for the apps, but I have 68mb but I have been running the same rom for a while. It should be around 80mb if you haven't done anything to build the cache, but I have the 1.33.2005 SPL which increases the internal memory size.
I get the same error "upgrade_fs not found" when I want to upgrade to ext 3 from console. From Amon_Ra's recovery I get an error too when I want to upgrade to ext 3. The other SD card I have worked perfectly with exact the same steps. What is wrong? Thanks
if you amon's isnt there an option that says upgrade ext2 to ext3? i guess thats the same?

I get an error when I press "upgrade ext2 to ext3" on my 2 GB card, the 1 GB card is done already.
sorry dude im a noob at this thing myself i guess one of the senior guys gotta answer this for you =\
Very strange, after many attempts suddenly I made the partitions, I don't know why but it worked
well thats good to hear =]

app2sd?

I'm using warm donut, flashed to the phone.. before hand I was using haret until I felt everything was stable enough.
My SD card is still partitioned the old way, 7.4GB fat32, 512M ext3, 32M swap
Is there a way to enable app2sd with warm donut so I can get more room? it might just be the fun of something new for now, but watching the free space for apps going down way to quickly

i second this, I would love to do apps to SD
I think it should be do-able now that we have the automount program that allows access sd card system and user simultaneously.
yeah you guys would love apps2sd...it's cool on my hero! im glad to see all of the android development going on here.
If you guys want to do Apps2SD, you'll need an ext2 partition on your SD for it. Native Android devices have had some trouble with Apps2SD, so it's just been rewritten by Chris Soyars and Cyanogen -- instead of the WesGarner method that had been used previously. I suggest using their code as it's battle-tested.
Here's the relevant code at github, as you can see it's been recently updated:

I have app2sd enabled in my eclair build.
If you want to use it you must have an ext2 parition on your sdcard. than use my spareparts app to enable. Reboot.. wait... and there you go.
Can we get this going in your build Myn?

Thanks for the quick reply.
This is starting to be not worth it and I am thinking I am glad that I was able to try android on an older phone because I dont think I will be getting an android phone when I upgrade in 6 months. Getting it so I can load apps to the sd card is WAAAAAAY to much of a pain I have tried a couple of tutorials and still cant get it to work.

All you need to do is create a ext2 partition on your card and install system to nand and data to ext 2 partition. You can create as big of a partition as you want.

Thanks for the super fast repsonse
I used gparted to create the partition and formated it to ext2.
The second part you are talking about install the system to nand and data to the ext2 partition. I have installed Myn’s Warm Donut - [RLS 4 - 03/16/2010] nand version and thats where I am at right now. Do I need to move the data folder to the ext2 partition that I created? If yes when I connect to my PC running windows 7 I cannot see the ext2 partition that I created with gparted.

use the norootfs installer and set your data to NAND, hit data backup, then set your data to ext2 and hit data restore.
Windows can't read ext2 on it's own

there you go much better answer then mine. Thanks man
would using ext2 partions make the build run smoother?
what are the benifits over NAND?
are you sure you need to have your data on the sd card? I was running apps2sd with mssmison's v7 eclair, and both my data and system were on nand, only the apps2sd was using the ext2 partition. i don't think it cares where your data.img is, just as long as you have an available ext2 partition; correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok making progress with your suggestion after 2 days of reading and failure -- lol.
I am now able to install apps to the sd card. However when I was trying all kinds of things to get this to work I made my 8GB sd card partitioned 6.5gb fat 32 and then made two ext2 partitions evenly split.
So do I need two ext partitions?
And as soon as I made the change and was able to install to the sd card I can no longer sync with my PC. Its not a huge deal because I took out the micro sd and placed it into an sd reader and my PC could still read it. So I am guessing that its something that I changed that is causing the phone not to sync with my PC.
Any thoughts

A2SD Help

Alright, here's what I've got. CDMA HTC Hero, rooted and running MCR.
I open up A2SD, and it says the card isnt formatted correctly. I set it at about 500mb for the ext3 partition, and it says running VERY briefly, then goes to "finished". Reboot, restart the app, same thing. I've got a 16GB MicroSD.
Whats the deal here? I've looked some stuff up, but cant really get anywhere with this. Any ideas?
PS - I've got a few google voice invites... I *might* be willing to throw one to whoever helps me out here.
Format it back to ext2, ext3 and ext 4 won't even let my phone boot.
Off the top I'd say check how you formatted. I have trouble doing linux partitions on the MAC so I assume you used the hero, and not a pc. You should see the subtraction of the size of the linux partition from the size of the fat32 one. Sorry.
TO get results I would ask at http://android.modaco.com/
BTW no invite.

Tried ext2, still nothing. Even tried adding a swap file, no go there either.
Am I just missing something here?
I used Paragon partition manager to resize the fat32 partition, then used the extra unallocated space to create an ext2. When it still didnt work, I tried resizing the fat32 again and adding a swap partition, and still nothing.

If you take the card out of the phone and put it in something else, does it show up as a FAT or NTFS file system?
Swap won't do anything for now but take up space on the card.
Could you try the original 2 gig card or any other one? Just as a comparison.

what do you mean "open up"?
apps2sd is a script. there is nothing to open up. it should run automatically without you noticing anything or you can manually run it from the shell.
did you DL some kind of app?

I mean when I open up the Apps2SD Program that is in my menu, it still says my card isnt formatted right, and linda file manager says that my space for apps is still only 159MB.
First things first... do you know what adb shell is?
If not then go to the market and get "quick system info"
If apps2sd is working there will be a A2SD Storage section in that program.
