Touch Pro 2 or Toshiba TG01??? - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive just found out i can cancel my contract due to a contractual change. Im going to get one of the above but id like to know which is the better phone? Opinions, facts, i dont mind.

Get the TP2. TG01 only supports UMTS2100.
real difference is QWERY vs non - QWERTY

How does UMTS2100 make a difference? I really dont understand all of that!

Go for TP2 it has a keyboard

The keyboard is whats swaying my decision, but the fact the TG01 is more powerful. I do love my HTC's though!

I have seen the video's but apparently the processor can be adjusted for battery saving. I think i will get the TP2

The Toshiba is laughable. They better stick to making batteries....
Get the TP2 and be amazed. I would get a Xperia, but that's just me.

I have an Xperia!

still the 1ghz processor would make lots of things faster

when the x1 came out, it there were performance issues with it. so im sure that toshiba would release some update to help with the problems of the tg01. So im not counting that phone out yet ... although im a hardcore fan of the tactile keyboard ... the 1ghz processor is very attractive to me.

I will never get a phone without a keyboard again. Plus, that UI seems so annoying....

why not get a simplicity contract (30 day rolling contract) and wait for a better handset to come out (eg. x2, new htc, palm pre etc).
then all u do is cancel your contract (giving 30 days notice) then get a new contract (same number if u want) and a new top end phone.
Im not saying the htc tp2 is not good (lot better than the toshiba) but i dont think its any better than the x1 u already have.

I've read (and seen on videos) the TG01 get really laggy, despite its impressive processor. Is that true?

+1. You are sooooo damn right. I won't change my x1 for next few months for one simple reason - there is no device on the market which is noticeably better (1ghz cpu is not that necessary for me right now). .... the other thing is, that x1 looks so damn good... man... f* tp2. I would wait, and the other thing is that I am very curious about Rachael. I am lucky to have an upgrade option pretty soon.

Toshiba's only WM phone is terrible. Why ask this in an Xperia forum that prioritizes on business qwerty slider phone?

Are you going to upgrade to Sony XPERIA X1?

A simple enough poll.
Are you going to upgrade from your Kaiser to the Sony X1?
Personally I love my Kaiser, it is by far the best phone I've ever had. My only problem is the screen resolution.... Now bring along the Sony Xperia X1 and have it pretty much functionally the same as the kaiser and the larger screen resolution and you have an awesome phone.
What right now could beat the X1, the TyTN III, but it's not anounced and unlikley to be this year.
So personally I can't wait for the X1.
Definitely not, though my kaiser is not perfect, i dont think a X1 would be. i've been using Sony's laptop, cell phones, mp3,etc in the past, but everytime there are some unacceptable designs fault like easily broken buttons and leakage on machine body. They just put their efforts on design, without testing carefully the components!
it would be better to ask this question when the device is in the wild and people have had a change to review it,
it could be a lemon for all we know

That's true, but and a real but, if it is pretty much the same as the Kaiser, with the higher resolution, slighly faster processor and graphics drivers (which I doubt really HTC want to fix for the kaiser) then this will be a killer phone.
Can we have another option please? Something along the lines of:
No, I'm not touching another device made by HTC, no matter who they're working with.
I like to try new gadget. So, for me, definitely I'm going to upgrade to Sony Xperia X1. If it's not going to be that good, I'll be back to my Tytn II.
It's really too soon to say, it looks good from this distance, but until there are real world reports on performance etc it's not possible to judge. I'd like it to be a killer device that I could upgrade to with confidence, but my previous experience of both SE and HTC tells me to wait.
It's still possible that this phone will only be a minor improvement on the Kaiser, and the Kaiser itself may still be improved in the meantime (through the work going on here, if not at HTC).
If I didn't have the Kaiser I would buy the X1 no doubt about that - but for my use there just isn't enough new stuff under the cover to make me go away from the Kaiser...
Oh yes please!!!!!
I will definitely check it out closer to launching but from what I have seen up to now I don't see any reason that I would not take it. I use to be a SE fan before I got into ppc's. I was looking for OS freedom, that is why I started with WM devices. I liked my Wizard and after almost 2 weeks can't find fault with my new Kaiser. Deep down I'm still a SE fan though.
Can't wait for launch date :
Not sure...I really like the larger screen and the buttons on the X1 as they are spaced out.
It also seems to be lighter/thinner which would be a plus.
But hopefully when the release WM7.0, it will make the Kaiser UI much more friendly and interactive.
None of this is confirmed and this is just a mockup, but it looks really sharp: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Microsoft-Windows-Mobile-7-0-Preview-or-Simple-Mockup-75751.shtml
For the most part though I really like my Kaiser

SE have confirmed that was just a mistake on their website, the release date stands at H2 - meaning anytime between July and December this year.
i just went on the sony website and watched their commercial. Its the crappiest commercial to advertise the phone. Its 6 seconds of the phone in action, and the rest is flying paper airplane.
I cant decide whether I want it or not. if it has all the things kaiser does, then yeah, but otherwise most likely not.
In theory it has all that the Kaiser has, plus a higher resolution screen. The really killer difference though is the size and weight - it really is a LOT smaller, and a lot more pocketable, while still retaining that full qwerty etc.

The most important feature is the keyboard. Sure that's why we all have the Kaiser right...
Size is important, but too small and you can't type. You'd end up with a Treo/ Blackberry/ Samsung type keypad and I can't stand those buttons, way too small.
In saying that though, the thickness is really important, it would be great if it was a lot thinner, but again if you go too thin you get into that area that samsung have been pushing. Have you tried out their D900 phone, just way too thin, pain in the a*s to press those keys.
Also weight. Kaiser is definatly the heaviest phone i've used, but I don't find it that bad. I thought it was going to be way to heavy, my old eTen m600 a lot lighter, but really I don't mind it at all.
A bit lighter, a bit smaller, a lot thinner, with the bigger screen, the better keyboard layout and we have a winner.
I can't wait to see the phones out in 2010!
As a long standing HTC user I have been happy with the MDA Vario III overall but the display problems and poor quality camera (slow screen refresh etc) have been a BIG disapointment. The poor response from HTC has been even worse and what appears to be a complete lack of customer service has really
put me off them!
I am certainly looking forward to checking out the XPERIA X1 in the flesh..
Sony have generally delivered a good solid handset in the past and the battery life and camera are often excellent too. As long as they get the whole package to come together and the initial feedback is good I will consider letting my Vario III go.
The only issue for me will be that I am currently only 5 months into a contract with T-Mobile so I will need to get a SIM free or go for a second contract. Oh the price we pay for technological advances!
Zippyioa
Rather than listen to the hype, I'd need to see it and test drive it.
It's gotta be head and shoulders above what the Kaiser has to offer, because I'm not the type of guy to upgrade just to have the latest.
Good thing my last HTC device was a Blue Angel and not a Wizard or Hermes, or I'd still be using it
personally i dont really care HOW much of an upgrade it is from TytnII to X1...of course it'd be nice if all the problems of the tytnii be fixed in the x1 but i just like to try new phones...so i will try out the x1...if i dont like it..worst case is go back to the tytnii...so no lost

The best phone of 2008?

I currently have an HTC Touch which I really really love, and a great plan from sprint too.
I found this site that says the HTC Touch Diamond will be the best phone of 2008...link: http://www.mytouch-diamond-phone.com
Does any agree or disagree???

Disagree. Either the Pro or the X1 will be better, mostly because of the memory card slot. I only wish their camera would be better - at least the same quality as the Omnia or the Nokia N95/N82...
How about HTC Dream android phone? that looks cool from the vague snippets I have seen, but the pro and the X1, so big and not so desirable. The Diamond is the best phone so far in my opinion.

It all depends on what you are looking for - as always. Size? Speed? Weight? SD-Slot? Mutlimedia device? Office? Something to show off or to work with?
There is no such thing as a perfect phone for everyone.....or a perfect wife/girl-friend for that matter. There will only be a perfect device/wife/gf etc. for YOU!

A guy in fones 4 u tried to convince me that the Samsung Tocco is the best phone of the year: better than the Iphone in fact. The frightening thing is that everyone in the shop agreed with him, and I was made to feel the odd one out for hating it! He even said it had a better camera than the N95!!!!!!
I had it for one day and thought it was an appallingly sluggish and pointless touchscreen experience with a fiddly and underpowered interface: can anyone tell me one good thing about the Tocco????
It's the Diamond for me so far, all the way; though for me nothing beats the N95 as an all-round value-for-money Smartphone: it's not a 2008 phone though, and it's probably anathema in these forums.
SO FAR :its hard to choose between the iphone and diamond for me...
tho i wud probably go for diamond coz im definitely more comfi using
widows over mAC
BUT wat i really believe is "THE BEST IS YET TO COME "

Getting new phone, reccomendations?

Hi.
I need a new phone, as i just lost my motorolla A920, AND permanetely bricked my Universal (very bricked, very dead, no bootloadermode or anything). I was looking for something unlocked, perhaps around the 300-400$ mark.
I want something with an X-scale processor, VGA screen, and perhaps maby a real GPU (useful gpu a.k.a not ATI's imageon(as i have never found one program that actually uses it.)). QWERTY keyboard would be cool, but not vital. Support for SDHC or Compact flash woud be preffered. And windows mobile . And working drivers *Stares at HTC Diamond*. (Isnt it a shame the Axim isnt a phone )
Im in australia, sydney-ish area, incase anyone here wants to sell me one (would only be pickup)
Was looking on eBay, may be possible to pick up a O2 Xda Flame for 400$. Its big but that doesnt bother me (at all), and i could buy a bigger/more batteries, as not hugely concerned about battery life (i can charge it everyday if needed). Must be unlocked, no plan, just buy outright.
Anyone have any suggestions/reccomendations?

Visit the marketplace section, you´ll find a large variety of HTC phones for selling, even some members from Australia
Good luck,
Well I'll have you know my next phone is going to be a nokia n82. The thing is blazing fast, it can play quake 3 at 25fps, every game and emulator you can imagine, the camera is great, extremely fast shutter speed, xenon flash.
it's just a basic candybar phone, packed with lots of features.
But as far as windows mobile, I dont know. I've pretty much given up on windows mobile until there is something fast. WM is kind of behind in speed versus other devices and OS's.
Thanks for the increadibly fast replies.
That nokia looks a little too... 'generic nokia' for my taste. The A920, Universal (and that Flame) look better for design (because they do, thats why). And i would prefer WM, none-the-less. Im not concerned about the camera (forgot this part in the first post). it doesnt even have to have a camera, i never used it on the other phones. the phone is not limited to HTC.

I would rather get it fixed, but i dont think there is any hope in hell of fixing it without some specialised equiptment or something, it does nothing except for the 2 status lights flash. Tried bootloader/hard reset mode, just doesnt do anything. Would appreciate some help to get it back to life though, its just so cool.
If i could trade it in for another phone (or reduced cost for the phone) than maby.
The flame will work in australia right? If so is it a reliable phone. Im aware of its size.
If it does work in australia and can get it at the right price, i will, but in the (very likely) event that i cant, i would want to know what people would reccomend.
As a backup i was also eyeing a HTC TyTN, perhaps not as powerful, but looks decent. Although if i cant get a flame, i would really want a universal (a working one). Its just so cool full stop.
Also, im also known as bobisgod... if that rings any bells...

Tried the universal bootloader again (and again (and again)) and still nothing at all on the screen, only the status lights flash.
Will look at the flame now, or as a backup TyTn. any other ideas on phones / places to buy flame in australia / ideas to get universal back to life?

htc lancaster running the new android?

i knwo this DEFINITELY is not the place for other phone's questions and such but considerign we dont have a lancaster section because its not out yet, and this is really the only android developent forum i figured id put it here, mods please move if there is a more appropriate thread(i DID look lol)
the lancaster is goign to be the first at&t android based phone and was wondering if there is any info out there in the xda community yet. if you havent heard of it, wich im sure most of us have, its around, google it. it look failry promising.
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/24/htc-lancaster-is-a-qwerty-slider-with-android-for-atandt/
some early release info. supposedly.
The screen resolution kills it for me.. Its so beautiful from outside with full keyboard and really really sad 2.8" QVGA 240*320..
There is no Android phone yet with full keyboard which beats G1.
keyboards with no physical numeric keys is utter fail
Really, the perfect smartphone would be:
An HTC Dream with 288 MB RAM instead of 192 MB and a better battery and maybe not a plastic case.
the lancaster looks dead sexy compared to the g1.. But as stated above the qvga screen 7 the 4 row keyboard both = fail..

the biggest thing that turns me off is its gonna be completely ravaged wit at&t bullcrap. dont get me wrong, getting it off of there will be simple but at&t is constantly doing that. yeah the screen sucks, the 4 row is probably killing me more than the screen at the moment, im just kind of excited for a major based phone company to get android. yea i know rogers, and orange etc, have them. but besides tmobile no large consumer company has android unless your port it to another htc phone(fuze/kaiser=both crap in my opinion).

Well not really. A phone with
1. Qualcomm's Snapdragon or Samsung's "Hummingbird" with 512 RAM inside
2. Hero like Teflon coating OR Carbon fiber on outside (No Chrome)
3. Full 5 row qwerty
Wow.. I am day dreaming sitting on my office chair.... with dreamy sound in the background...
5mp camera would almost automatically nessecitate it being a carl ziess(sp?) phone.
on the other hand, i think snapdragon* is going to be the set standard for any REAL smartphone after all the big boys have a run with it.
i say snapdragon because i havent really done much looking into the hummingbird =]
ok the perfect phone would be running the nvidia tegra apx with no less then about a 3.5" wvga screen.. No physical keyboard necessary & would be no more then about 3.8 inches diagnol (basically all screen) and about 1/4" thick.. Of course it needs at least 2 days worth of juice & that would pretty much set us up for whatever we needed going forward for at least a few years
AHHH! I'm on AT&T and absolutely HATE the Lancaster. First off, 3.0MP with FIXED FOCUS. Not to mention a 4 row keyboard instead of my G1's 5 row. And the screen res sucks! I really want an AT&T 3G Android but it looks like I'll have to wait for the HERO to come here

Same for me, when Hero hits ATT I'm gonna be all over it! It'll be a nice addition to my G1...and 3G!
I worked for AT&T as long as it isn't a metal case. metal cases blow for reception.
I'm on AT&T and using my edge only G1.
Lancaster SUCKS! for above stated reasons, FIXED FOCUS camera makes scan code reading useless! Smaller keyboard! AND, worst of all - the SCREEN!
Do the mindless pukes at ATT even THINK before releasing the phone!?!?! Due they just WANT the device to fail? Come ON! I will be waiting to get my hands on some other device that has the 3G freqs I need for ATT - then buy that phone!

Tilt still considered a worthy phone?

I've had a tilt for a couple of years now and it still works pretty good but it seems all the interest is being placed on newer phones. I don't want a new phone cause ATT doesn't have anything out now that I want to get a contract for. Would a good deal on a fuze be a worthy upgrade or should I just keep the tilt till a new phone comes along that moves me?
The Fuse is a downgrade from the Tilt IMHO. Smaller keyboard, smaller screen, not as healthy a developer community I think. If you are going to upgrade, go with the Tilt 2...I mean comeon, its just damn sexy. But, no I do not think the fuze is a very worth successor.
The problem with the Tilt is not the hardware, but the OS. With the introduction of Windows Phone 7, a lot of developers have abandoned Windows Mobile.
The good news is that the Tilt has one of the most sucessful Android ports. You can replace Windows Mobile with a Android Donut build and have a fully functional Android phone. It's not perfect, it is slow and has poor battery life. Though, considering that in the past 6 months the Tilt has a 100% working Android OS, it won't be long before the OS is fast and stable. Not to mention that hopefully we'll also see a FroYo build. Eclair doesn't have working BT or Camera, but I'm sure with time that'll work too.
Another thing to consider is that most new phones aren't much of an upgrade, unless it has a snapdragon in it. Otherwise, most have the same CPU with a 128 Mhz speed boost, and 64-128MB more ram. They do have better LCD screens and have accelerometers. Plus the Tilt does have a weak camera compared to the newer 5.0 Megapixel LED flash cameras.
Personally, I'd hold out until Snapdragon based Android phones with hardware keyboards make a common appearance. Otherwise, save your money, wait for Android to get better on Tilt.
BTW, AT&T has a lot of refurbished Tilt 2 phones that they're practically giving away for free. Getting one of those isn't bad, even though their Android development isn't anywhere near as far as the Tilts.

Smaller screen not really and vga, keyboard isn't smaller as has numeral 5 line, the community is larger than Kaiser regards turnover, the device has TF3D inc Sense 2.5, the one thing Kaiser does have better than TP build quality, noticed as soon as got TP i had to worry more.
Anyway my advice would be don't go midway buy the best phone you can, in my mind thst would be TP2 or HD2 "if stuck with win-mo" or Nexus1.
Wouldn't hang about for a Win7 device but then i don't fall for hype when so much going to be locked down regards dev.
Fuze gets no love
I'm really surprised that you all don't think better of the Fuze. Compared to the Tilt I know it has these added features....
Faster CPU
Higher resolution
More Ram/Rom
TV Out
FM radio
Accelerometer
Also the cooked Fuze roms are using Sense 2.1 while many of the Kaiser rom threads are being labeled as final. I wrote the to get a status check of the Tilt's activity. Seems there are still die hards in here.
I'm not so sold yet on the Android platform. A couple of articles I remember reading said that its apps marketplace is full of "junk" apps. Don't wanna jump on the fad OS just to have it go out faster then WM is. Yeah WM is at the bottom of the list right now but its what I'm most familiar with.
If AT&T would sell me a refurbish Tilt 2 at a good price without renewing my contract I'd be on it. Who knows when the next long term king of the smartphones will come out and who's gonna have it. I don't wanna be tied down to AT&T and not be able to get out of it.
I literally was going to switch to AT&T, but their recent contract changes for smart phones has made me reconsider. I don't wanna pay $300 just to switch to another provider.
Android is far from a fad. Microsoft and Apple wanna make a closed OS to mimic the revenue of game consoles. For every app that's sold, they make money. Android doesn't force you to get your applications from the market. Not to forget that it's based on linux, which means you will always have a way to improve it. That's why G1 owners are able to get OS upgrades.
The Fuze is an upgrade, but nothing massive. I'm surprised how many smart phones have the Qualcomm MSM7201A ARM 11 at 528 MHz. It's literally on every device, but it's only 128 Mhz faster then the Tilt, and many tilt owners have been able to overclock to 500 Mhz on Android, without any issues.
Like I said, Snapdragon + Hardware keyboard. Don't settle for anything less.
The Raphael does get love
Just that if i had a contract then a TP2 would be easily in grasp so wouldn't buy a secondhand tp, main reason real estate as WVGA get fed up of tiny screen even in VGA since use phone alot....
Iphone?
i would suggest the rhodium or the hd2
even maybe the touch hd

Are you crazy? That thing has only one flipping button.
Haven't we learned anything from the 2 button mouse issues with Apple computers in the past?

If you jailbreak you can and if you wait for 4.0 you will be able to natively.
