Hi, I currently have the 3.22.20.17 radio on my phone. If I follow the guide to root the Rogers Dream I will have to upgrade to haykuro's SPL with this radio. I have read that people have bricked their phones if they don't have the correct radio when upgrading the SPL. Am I ok to do this or could I brick my phone?
Thanks
If you goto haykuro's thres "rogers, here's your real root" the first line has a link to somones guide to flashing the spl. Follow that and you should be good.
Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering if it was correct that I am supposed to be starting out with the 3.22.20.17 radio for this guide.

Actually it's 2.22.19.26I
So I am supposed to have the 2.22.19.26I radio already? Remember that I have a Canadian Rogers Dream.

Follow what Haykuro's thread says (Rogers=probably not the 2.22.19.26I, you may brick your phone if you try the regular G1 root SPL method) . If you want to be safe, you can reflash the radio that haykuro posted
I'm sorry, I should have asked if the 3.22.20.17 radio is compatible with haykuro's latest SPL.
No it is not. You need to follow the guide exactly, I believe that you the stock Rogers radio. So just follow it and you should be set.
That guide gets you to flash the SPL before the radio and that SPL isn't compatible with my radio? Won't that brick it?

The radio's for rogers are completely different from the G1's
You may want to try and PM Haykuro because I do not see a clear cut answer
I sent him a PM but I haven't recieved a reply yet.
Could someone that has rooted their Roger's Dream help me out with this?
Can someone please tell me if I need to upgrade my radio on my Roger's phone before I start following the guide or will it be fine? I am asking because the first thing guide says to do is upgrade the SPL. I just want to be really sure that having the 3.22.20.17 radio and haykuro's SPL together won't brick my phone.
how do you find out what spl you have ?
can someone breifly explain to me what SPL is
and i right in thinking SPL is what can make a brick ?
hold camera and power to boot in to the SPL (when the phone is off) and it will tell you. A rainbow screen means it's stock.
The SPLs other than stock allow you to use fastboot to flash things like splash images and restore nandroid backups. Haykuro's SPL (aka "Danger SPL") allows you to run HTC based ROMs like Hero and Rogers. Make sure you have the cupcake/1.5 radio (which you should already have) before flashing, otherwise it will brick.
Downgrade to Hard SPL from Danger SPL??

When I rooted my phone I installed Haykuro's danger spl with the latest radio. I didn't know it can potentially brick your phone (hence the danger part lol). I'm running cyanogen 4.0.1 and it's working just fine so far but I had 3 questions
1) Is Hykuro's Danger SPL only risky during the installation process or can it still possibly brick your phone after a successful installation (in other words, elaborate on the "danger" part please)
2) Can I downgrade to Hard SPL after installing the Danger SPL
3) How would I downgrade to Hard SPL?
Thanks guys!!!
If you are using Haykuro's spl there is no need to downgrade, it will allow you to run anything the hard spl will and more. The only "danger" with haykuros spl is when you flash it, if you successfully flashed it then you have nothing to worry about.
Rodey is correct, that H's SPL does everything hardSPL does (fastboot ect) and sloows you to run HTC Based ROMs. I don't know why you would want to downgrade but if you do it should be as simple as flashing the hardSPL update.zip. Get a secind opinion on that though if you want to try it, I'm no hardSPL expert.
You will only brick your phone with haykuro's SPL if you dont have a PVT board (camer+power to boot in to SPL, it will tell you) and if you dont have to 1.5 radio. To check either in the SPL or Settings > about phone check the baseband is version 2.22.19.26 (if you go to about phone there will be some crap before the number, ignore it).
IMO H's SPL is just handy to have. As long as you have the new radio and a PVT board nothing *touch wood* should go wrong.
One more thing, when flashing the SPL, don't play hot potato with your phone ;-)

Thank you guys! In that case I'll just keep H's SPL seeing that I already installed it successfully without bricking my phone (yay)
Really appreciate both of your time!

Unless you are Unrooting and flash the original spl. I've done this many times so I know it works.
Does SPL: 1.33.2005 help the regular ROMS run better (Cyanogen's)?
I use dxTop, seems to run out of memory quickly.

If you didn't downgrade to RC29/7 then you should have the 1.5 radio. Check by going to Settings > About Phone and baseband version. It should be 2.22.19.26I.
I think you can just flash HardSPL as update.zip as you are, but I' not completely sure...

I swear I've heard people say they have, but dowgrading the radio after installing Danger SPL did cause bricks...
I'll go check
You WILL brick your phone if you attempt to downgrade your radio after flashing the new SPL or if you do not have the latest radio installed before flashing the new SPL

FYI
FYI
@Adrian K and nephron
When I unrooted my spare G1, I got it completely back to stock (circa October original shipment stock)
I downgraded my SPL successfully from the danger SPL all the way back to the original SPL. Also when I downgraded back DREAIMG.nbh, I confirmed at the time that the radio downgraded with it. My original post was on the unlockr.com when I was trying to help David of unlockr.com with some tutorials.
My original quote from unlockr
BTW: I have confirmed via the bootloader that the radio DOWNGRADES back to stock by applying the DREAIMG.nbh update FYI
From the bootloader I am now at

I think it's downgrading the Radio, while on Danger SPL that will brick your phone b.
I have also gone from Hard to Danger back to Hard again with no issues.
if i use the 1click root method and then install cyanogens 4.0.1... do i actually need to do the hardspl and the radio or is that all taken care of? that's the only thing that's confusing me a little bit...

If you are talking about the one click method that is know on the market as recovery flasher, that only takes care of granting root access and flashing cyanogen's recovery image. The radio and spl upgrades are on you.
Try here for more explanation
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550050
yea that's what i'm talking about... now don't get me wrong, i believe you guys here on xda first and foremost... but theres a video tutorial on android and me, and it doesn't show them installing the radio and spl between using the recovery flasher and then installing cyanogens 4.0.1... are they not doing it right in the video or are the radio and spl optional? all the guides on here seem to say you do have to flash them but the video clearly shows them not stopping to do it. so maybe their video just sucks haha. but any idea on that?
thanks so much
I have 1 click rooted and installed Cyanogen 4.01, I am on CRC1, my understanding was as I was already on 1.5 Cupcake, my current SPL and Radio were current.
I read somewhere that the 1 click method is only temporary root. But if someone could elaborate on this it would be very helpful. Also what is this hard spl ?
I have a South African HTC Dream and did some research on this forum about rooting. I am more than happy with the phone's current ROM with the exception that it does not support WPA-Enterprise Wifi - in order for me to configure this, I would need to root the phone and will then be able to adjust wpa_supplicant.conf.
In all the tutorials I would have to downgrade the firmware (I have not been able to do this with any of the guides supplied - either normal RC7 downgrade, 1-click or Goldcard) in order to root the phone.
Is there any way I can root the phone without having to flash another ROM (i.e. retain the current HTC ROM and make adjustments to wpa_supplicant.conf)? Most ROMs provided are not based on HTC build, and I would loose ActiveSync. AFAIK there is no ROM available which provides ActiveSync AND HTC Mail.

There are HTC based ROMs. The ROM from the Rogers Dream has exchange support, but before you flash the ROM you must flash the new radio then the SPL.

Thanks - I replaced my phone with another one (FW 1.1) and was able to flash. I installed Touchdown to overcome the Exchange problems - not ideal, but best choice now.

You're on 1.1?! I would strongly recommend flashing a Cyanogen ROM to get you back to 1.5.
I did update to latest Cyanogen rom. One question: I rooted the phone and am on latest Cyanogen. Only (minor) issue I have is that before the Cyanogen splash-screen comes on, I still see my mobile providers boot-logo (for about 10 seconds until the splash screen comes) - is there any way to change this?
I tried fastboot flash splash1, but get an error. As part of my rooting I did not flash SPL (i.e. HardSPL) but have cm-recovery - should I update SPL and if so which one (also, what is the risk of bricking?).
If replace SPL, do I need to update the radio again or reflesh Cyanogen?
As far as I know you wouldn't need to flash either again, HardSPL is known to be safe on all phones I believe. The only problems I've heard are with Haykuro's SPL. If you haven't flashed a new SPL that could be the issue, what is the error your getting when trying to change the splash?

It should be safe as long as it doesn't not require a specific radio. I have never heard of the radio version you have, but that's probably because you don't have a t-mobile G1. What carrier is it on? If it's unlocked, what was the original carrier? (the ones displayed on the boot screen).
I think Josh is right that it's safe for all Dream's, so you probably could go ahead and flash it, I'm not 100% sure. Just a quick not about flash SPL's and radios on cm-recovery, you have to physically press alt-s then home+back to reboot. Don't touch the trackball. That's only for SPLs and radios.
The hard spl is great, but if u want to run hero u will nees to flash haykuros spl. If u do flash haykuros spl make sure u flash the new radio image FIRST! OR U WILL BRICK! Have fun flashing away
Thanks. I applied SPL from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548924
And then fastboot worked: /fastboot-mac flash splash1 DOWNGRADE-SD/Boot_images/android.rgb565
Upgraded to latest Cyanogen 4.0.4 and have now an awesome phone - thanks to everyone for the help on this forum!

thanks. after seeing the radio you said you originally had in the first post i remembered that rogers has a radio that starts with a 3(then i searched and they are the same radio), then when i tried to download the root rogers package from that thread it kept timing out the download, so i was just curious as to radio you used. according to all the rogers root thread you have to flash the 1.33.2005 spl first before you can actually root, so basically i was trying to figure out if devices with that radio are immune to the bricking without 2.22.19.26I radio.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I rooted my phone using the "one click" root method (from standard Rogers 1.5 firmware) (http://zenthought.org/system/files/a...1-20090908.apk) and then updated to the latest radio:
•2.22.19.26I
•Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
•http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecod..._22_19_26I.zip
I initiall got the box with the arrow then the phone continued to the Rogers boot screen and has been stuck there for 20 minutes at least! So i took out the battery and turned it back on again and it get stuck on the Rogers screen still!
Have I bricked it!?! I thought you can only brick it when you update the SPL ... all I did was update the radio. Please HELP!
If it helps I was following the instructions step by step from: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/how...page=0,2
according to the cyanogen guide I bricked my phone:
2.Be very careful of any upgrade or mod instructions that require you to install an HTC "Recovery" zip/image, a replacement radio, or anything that might cause a difference of versions thereby bricking your phone.
eg: you currently have an EBI1 system and recovery image. If you boot an EBI0 radio image you will no longer be able to boot your phone.

Thanks in advance.
P.S. to clarfiy every button combination I press comes up with the Rogers boot screen. Unless I'm a complete idiot and am not pressing the buttons correctly I don't see how I can fix the phone if it won't boot! I though bricked phones are totaly duds (eg. they don't turn on/no charging lights...)
see if you can get it recovery mod? (home+end)
The main cause of bricks is using an SPL that is incompatible with the IPL (radio), hence it is possible not only to brick by changing the SPL, but also by changing the IPL.

Not a chance.
If all he did was change the IPL, then the ONLY cause for it doing locking as it is, is that the SPL is not compatible with that IPL. It is, therefore, bricked.
I didnt think that radio was compatible with the rogers phones, i thought that they had to use the 3.22.20.17 radio?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544654&highlight=rogers+root
if so that could be the cause of your brick!

Wow.... perhaps you should chill a little, these are Q&A forums, the purpose of which is to educate and help, not just baffle people with terms that its doubtful that they have heard before.
You'll see that i linked back to the thread that details everything that they should be to know not to make the mistake again, and anyone else that does a search will find it as well.
The rogers dream is compatiable with either radio. You just need your recovery/kernel version to match your radio version. The 2.22.19.26I radio needs 32B and 3.22.20.17 needs 32A recovery/kernel.
He needs to reflash the 3.22.20.17 radio then complete the rogers dream rooting guide on the cm wiki.
I followed haykuro's guide to try and root my Rogers G1 but I'm having issues missing my google apps. I want to revert my phone to stock and then follow cyanogenmod's wiki guide for my phone.
What steps should I follow to revert my phone from cyanogenmod ROM, radio 2.22.19.26I, HBOOT 1.33.2005 (DREAM21000) to bone stock?
I searched to see if someone had posted a guide for this but couldn't find anything.
