How to Properly Upgrade ROM - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I did a couple searches but could not find a guide to updating my CyanogenMod version. I followed an old ninja tutorial on rooting which linked to v3.4.6. But I don't think I have to do a wipe and all that stuff do I? Do I just have to copy the ROM to SD, rename as update.zip and do the reboot thing? Will I lose my data? Settings? (I know it's a good idea to backup anyway)
Do I have to upgrade incrementally from 3.5-->3.6-->3.7-->etc.. or can I jump to latest version? Do I need to use an updated recovery image, or is cm-recovery-1.2.img okay?
On a side note, I just noticed that there is an update showing up under System Updates. Is that the official Google update? What would happen if I applied that update?
Thanks

just download cm 4.0.1 and flash it. you do not have to wipe unless things start to terribly mess up. i would recommend get the 1.4 recovery image as you can flash any .zip file with it. also you can restore a nandroid backup from it. if something does mess up try running fix_permissions in the recovery console before wiping.
if you applied an official google update you would lose root access but that wouldn't be terribly hard to get back with the one-click root in the market aka recovery flasher.

Thanks david1171.
Does either flashing the ROM or the Recovery Image wipe my settings, apps? Sorry for the noob q's.
Also, someone in a previous thread said to update radio? Is that a separate procedure? Where do I find the latest radio version?

just flashing the rom or radio or recovery image will not wipe anything. the newest radio is 2.22.19.26I. you can check in setting>about phone> under baseband version the part past the U_ is the radio version. if you do not have the latest radio you can get in cyanogen's thread in the first post. and you just flash the radio like a normal rom. the only thing that will wipe your data when you flash it is haykuro's spl.

what do you mean just flash the radio like any normal rom?
do I rename the radio zip file to update.zip, put in root directory, reboot, hold HOME, then ALT+S? Is that what you mean?
I tried to follow the HTC guide for updating radio, but it sounds like you need a developer machine to run those commands.
Thanks

yeah thats how you do it.

Alright, I'm up and running:
recovery 1.4
newest radio
cyanogenmod 4.0.1
Here's a guide for noobs that I found useful:
http://androidandme.com/2009/05/gui...r-rooting-your-android-g1-to-install-cupcake/
It's going to be outdated but at least it shows how to update radio. I didn't realize that all updates were treated the same. Now with Cyanogen's Recovery 1.4, we don't have to rename the files to update.zip.
I also didn't realize that when you do updates it doesn't delete your data folder which houses all of your custom settings, apps, google account info. It just flashes the system files.
I still don't know a lot and don't completely feel comfortable doing everything. Hopefully soon enough, someone will put together a guide to explain all the particulars that are not obvious to the noob. People have already started.
Thanks so much to everyone who has worked on these projects. It's so awesome!

do you have the Hard SPL. if not go to the guide in my sig and you can install it noob friendly from there

2. is flashing "HardSPL" or "DangerSPL" a musthave or can i use the original SPL (iam scarry to flah SPL)?
3. when i restore the backup do i have the full original t-mobile D delivery version of my G1?
4. how i restore the original recovery.img
5. if needed, how do i restore the original SPL
6. do i need to flash the Radio manual or do the apk make this
7. is this the right order?

As a N00b you should at least read the Sticky posts, like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=528334 this one...
It's called:
"Don't Start A New Thread - Dream Questions & Answers Here!"
All questions should be posted in the Q&A Section. I'm not too familiar with the 1-click rooting since it's been out for less than 72hrs so from what I've heard the 1-click root flashes cyan's recovery for you so all you have to do is this:
-Download and flash newest radio
-Download and flash Hard SPL
-Wipe
-Download and flash CM v4.0.1
If you do it in this order I'm 99.99999% sure you won't brick your phone, but once again please post all future question in the Q&A section

Yes, this app worked perfectly for me ( cuz I dun wanna waste my time doing all the porcess of pulling the firmware back to RC29 ). If u have the latest radio, then just execute the .apk, turn off your phone right after doing all the required process from that app ( back up current img then Flash the 1.4 img from Cyanogen I remember ), then go into recovery mode and you have the newest recovery img. (Remember to put the CyanogenModv4.0.1 to your SD first). Then Wipe and Flash the update, and you're done
and it works without flashing SPL????

hard spl will not brick your phone. it is needed to flash roms from other regions than yours. hard spl is a good thing to have. also with it you can flash nandroid back ups and you can change your splash screen to further personalize your dream. enough said... go download it. flash it. if you have to wipe, then wipe. if you don't like wiping then you should not have rooted in the first place.
but to use this tool have id need to flash the SPL or works it with the original SPL too? in the manual and one the youtube video- there is no info about a need to flash the SPL.
all i want to know is:
can i just install this app, flash the new radio, run the backup, flash recovery, flash CFW, and iam done or not
yes you can do that. afterwards i would recommend flashing the hard spl.
you do not have to flash it, but it would be a good thing.

thanks, should i flash the radio befor i try to root my G1 with the 1-click rooting? or after i flashed the custom FW?
I used the "1-click root"
I followed all the steps and my phone is working fine, but how can you tell if its rooted?
Also, if it is rooted and I wanted to install the most current cyanogen ROM, do I have to install the new radio and SPL files?
Thanks in adv for putting up with my N00Bness.
what build do you have now? rc33? i would first update the radio. i would not mess with the newer spl as it has been known to brick phones. also did you install cynogen's recovery image? turn phone off then hold power button and home key when you turn it on to put you back into recovery image. it should say cynogen recovery 1.4 on top. it will have a number of options on the bottom nandroid backup, restore nandroid etc. if that cynogen"s recovery image is on the phone its rooted. after you flash the latest radio, i would flash jf 1.51 build then cynogens latest build. i heard the going to cynogens latest build will cause a bootloop if your not coming from another modded build.

To tell if the phone is rooted, download terminal emulator from the market and type su at the prompt. If the phone is rooted, the prompt should go from a $ to a #. If not, you will get a permission denied error message. If that is the case, probably go the old fashion way of rooting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548924
As far as the SPL and radio, you don't need the danger SPL (haykuro's) but you will need to engineering SPL or hard SPL to install custom ROMs. As far as the radio, you want to latest radio to improve calls, bluetooth, etc.
hi im also new..
i did the 1 click root too. i did the back up, then flashed the 1.4. then the nandroid backup, then wiped the data, then flashed cyanogens 4.0.1. so im pretty sure im rooted.. and everything works too! except myfaves and the native im app.
but whats this about the radio? do i have to update that? i havent messed with the radio at all.. what are the dangers in this? if any?
and i haave no clue what the hell spl is lol

Android Dev 1.6 to original cupcake

Please help!!! I started messing with my phone about a week ago and I install the Android 1.6 dev. It will not flash anything, not even an spl. What am I missing. I almost feel bad asking because all of you seem to have such knowledge of this stuff. Thank you very much
I don't wanna bring your hopes down thinking this was help lol but u prolly tried flashing cyanogens new rom and its funny cause i was JUST about to post this same shiet. but anyways. i was thinking about flashing the dream file but i dunno if that owuld brick my phone or not. and just to clarify its the htc 1.6 dev right? i mean if thats the only 1? lol
yup
That is exactly what happened! I don't understand how this isn't a major issue and posted everywhere. If you figure it out make sure you let me know and I will do the same. Take it slow!
Can you explain what the problem problem is? What have you been trying to flash? Do you get errors? What recovery image are you using?
Btw, if you're flashing an SPL or radio with Cyans recovery, you can't use the trackball. It must be an update.zip which you install by pressing alt-s and reboot using home+power. If you don't it wont be installed.
Well, I don'tk now about the original poster, but I've tried flashing the OTA cupcake rom to downgrade. renamed to update, went into recovery but it says its not authorized. and.. im afraid to put the dream.nbh or w/e cause it might brick the phone.
PS: This is 1.6 without root. this is the dev ver. so we have the exclamation point recovery not cyan.

okay first you need a app called flashrec it will dl cyan recovery image then you reboot. But you need root first also teh dreaimg.nbh file which is RC29.
1.5 cupcake rc30 or something and up was patched with the one click root, that's why we were trying to downgrade to 1.5..
nothing works
I can't use the flash rec because it won't back up the recovery image! Everything I try to flash just goes to installation aborted! I don't know what to do!
It's b ecause 1.5 rc30+up (including 1.6) patched up the 1 click, but an answer would be nice
flash the dream image and start from scratch. that takes everything back to stock, then you can re-root. This thread can walk you through it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=491350
it doesnt work
I already tryed that but it won't let me flash the spl!
i tried that too
I tried flashin the dreaimg too. I have ran jf1.5 before and flashed themes and everything. That's why I don't understand why I can't flash anything. The 1.6 work but the recovery image isn't letting me flash anything at all! Once I installed the 1.6 dev it flashed me from the 1.4 cyanogen image to the exclamation image with a differnt bootloader. Ever since then I can't flash anything.
i think he means using camera + power unroot it.but im guessing we don't flash the SPL since we can't, we just flash the dream.nbh?
After Factory Reset
Guys,
I did factory reset but now I can not work with HTC dream as it is requesting me to cerate a gmail account, and I can not cerate because I do nto have internet in my mobile operator.
Does anyone knwo how to bypass this mesage?
please help meee.
r,
bhowd u do the factory reset?
I did it!!!
I had to download sdk, get it working, fastboot the the cyanogen 1.4 recovery image. After the it let me install all of my updates. YAAAAYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
could you tell me the steps of what you did?
I'm stuck with ADP1 1.6 ><
Thanks a lot!!
This will work!!!
Trust me this will work because it took me hours to figure out. Install sdk, get it to work. They explain how to use the program on the forum. After you finally get into fastboot flash the cm 1.4 recovery image. After you do that you can bootup into that recovery and it will then read all of your zip files unlike that stupid exclamation recovery.
slightly confused
So you mean you used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502010 to figure out how to use the sdk right?
If not, can show me the link to that guide?
Many thanks!!!
yes
Yes, I used the sticky notes at the top of Dream Q&A to figure it out and it wasn't too fun.

So... Would this work? [G1]

Hello everyone.
I have done a lot of reading and searching regarding rooting a G1. There are so many guides and resources out there I was wondering if you guys could point me to the best (safest?) way to do it.
I have been thinking of rooting it for months due to the benefits I can get once I have done it but the thought of bricking it has been stopping me from doing it. I want to get it over with now and would appreciate if you guys can point me to the best guide and the best rom (I know there is many, I would like speed, stability and some nice features would be cool). I have a G1, I live in the UK and it is supplied by T-Mobile. I keep it up to date with the OTA updates so I think I will have to downgrade which I believe is shown in most guides? If there is any info you guys need, please say.
I would be really thankful if I got some help, it's not something I want to do without proper knowledge (which all of you have). Is it easy enough to do if I follow the instructions and make sure my battery is charged enough?
Also, can we in the UK flash the radio, is that meant to be tampered with, what are the pros and cons of doing that?
Thank you so much.
EDIT -----------------------------
Please look at post #6, I made a list of what I think I need to do.
I would suggest finding the 1-click root to make it easy for you. Then, flash the 1.6 HTC image like all builds based off of Cyanogen's build environment require now and then flash @wesgarner's build for the fastest most stable build available.
Here's how to root your phone... nice and simple....
The one click root doesn't work if you've upgraded your phone to the OTA 1.6 update.
So the old instructions would be a safe bet since i don't know if you have 1.5 or 1.6.
Follow these instructions: http://www.myhangoutonline.com/2009/11/20/how-to-root-your-g1/
Then upgrade your radio and SPL from here: http://www.myhangoutonline.com/2009/11/22/upgrade-radio-recovery-spl/
Then if you want to upgrade to the newest CM build do this:
Before you install the Cyanogenmod 4.2.7.1 ROM you need to install the HTC 1.6 Dev Rom first.
HTC took it off their website, i have it uploaded on my site...
do this: ( This is for HTC Dream (G1) )
CLEAR YOUR EXT PARTITION or REPARTITION YOUR CARD to get rid of any Incompatible files.
Download CM 4.2.7.1 -> http://www.myhangoutonline.com/downloads/?did=17
Download HTC Dream Image 1.6 -> http://www.myhangoutonline.com/downloads/?did=6
Place them both on the root of your SDCard.
Reboot your phone into recovery mode...
1. WIPE
2. Install HTC Dream Image
3. Hit Reboot when it's done (and keep an eye on the phone!)
4. you will see the little picture with an arrow (radio installation), WHEN YOU SEE THE PHONE REBOOT HOLD THE HOME KEY. It should reboot right back into recovery.
5. Now install the CM ROM
6. Reboot and you're done...
Hope that helps!
http://androidoverdrive.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7
Thank you all for the information and links.
I have been doing a lot more reading today and think I might go with Dwang's rom. From what I understand (to do it the quick way) I need to revert my G1 back to Cupcake (RC7 for europe?) from Donut 1.6. Then Download the recovery flasher and flash a recovery image, do I use Amon Ra's? Do I then load the rom, then the theme afterwards? I hear people mentioning the radio, is it a necessity for the G1 that I mess with the radio? Is it easy to brick the phone doing it this way?
Thanks again for the help and understanding .
After watching this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCG9XhFmoEw
Could you guys tell me if this would work?
1. Format my SDCard. Transfer the old android (RC7?) image, Amon Ra's recovery image, Dwerg's rom and a nice theme made for the rom to the SD card.
2. Can I use the telnet thing to flash the Aman Ra recovery image?
3. Power off.
4. Power on holding the camera button and the power button and then downgrade my version. Reboot.
5. Turn on and set up my google info. Press enter twice and type "telnetd" and press enter. Proceed to the market and download the telnet app.
6. Run the app, and type in what's needed to flash the new recovery image. Again, can I use Aman Ra's? I'm unsure what to type but I will try and figure it out.
7. Power off.
8. Power on holding the Home and power keys, which should bring me to the new recovery image.
9. If I am flashing Dwerg's do I need to flash 1.6 first like you need to do for CM? Or is that a CM only thing? Flash the rom.
That should be it? Would doing it that way work ok? Less chance of bricking? There was no mention of radio flashing or anything.
Hopefully you guys can help me out.

Help with Cyanogen and modding

Ok, i have a need for a bit of help. I rooted and flashed to Jesusfreaks adp. I tried to get it to RC33. LONG story short, JF is installed. My kernel is 2.6.27-00392-g8312baf
NO clue what that means but im at fireware 1.5 and Build number CRB43
I want to get to Cyanogen. It looks a little smoother then JF and more frequently update. BTWi have a G1
I followed this guide TO THE T!
simplehelp.net/2009/10/04/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-4-1-99-on-your-g1-android-phone/
and after i rebooted, it took forever to boot (which is usual)
All my apps crashed. My desktop didnt even load. It had force closes like *android.phone and *android.mail
I figured it was because i was trying to mod off of the Jesus freak setup. Can anyone help me out and tell me how to either COMPLETELY wipe my phone and restore it to its origional G1 official build and then i can re-root to Cyanogen OR a way to mod from Jesusfreak to Cyanogen
copy and paste this into your browser... follow the directions...
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod[/url]
Just read that guide over and thats all exactly what i already did. I have tried to signed-dream flash and then after taht the cyan mod. It installed the OS no problem. It just didnt have any programs working. IT is as if the phone had the OS but no program files. It wouldnt even load the phone at all. it was a black screen with a status bar and infinate force close screens. Any idea what that is a result of? I had to flash recover back to my JF os
Try this:
1. Flash recovery Amon_Ra (Great improvment on JF and Cyans recovery)
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
select console from the menu
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img
2. Boot into recovery (Home+Power)
3. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
4. Wipe EXT
5. Repair EXT
6. Flash Super D (I suggest Super D only because there is less flashing involved and it's a great improvement on the Cyan roms.. super quick too)
From here you should be set.
so if i already have root and all that, do i still need to follow step 1? Like flash with Amon_Ra? or can i just wipe, and reload the D rom? also your rom says its myHero2.2? is that a good rom? Im just trying to find the best rom to use on a g1. I have read up on Jesusfreak, its very stable, but it is pretty much just a open version of the regular tmobile os. THe only difference is the apps store is an older version. In your opinion, what is the best G1 rom and what are its percs?
thanks for all your help. This has been a working progress haha, finding a good rom and sticking with it. and can you give me a list of all the files needed for the best rom? if they have a step by step guide to it, thatd be great! i would look myself, but im still new at all this and there are like a bajillion different roms/ ways to load the rom. Im a PSP hacker, not an experienced phone guru

I would just so you're current on your recovery. The updated recovery has added features compared to JF's recovery

I would load the new recovery and then flash Super D. Again it's the most stable and is wicked fast. Yeah used to use myHero2.2 but i haven't updated my sig in a while. It's getting mundane at this point.

This is going to be more of a difficult question to answer. It just depends on what you're after. I really prefer Super D because of it's speed. Again its built from the Cyan roms so you get Cyan + extras. That's what I would go with. Simple, easy, and fast.

Well that's the cool part about the community here at XDA. All the files are set up for you. To flash a rom:
Code:
Download the .zip file and place it on the root of your sd card
Reboot into recovery
Make a backup (i prefer switchrom)
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe EXT
Repair EXT
Flash rom from .zip
Reboot.
It's that easy.

[SOLVED] updating unlocked\rooted\s-off htc one to 4.3

Hi everyone,
im a newbie android user, have my device for barely 2 weeks.
i have a couple of questions on my mind, questions i tried googeling answers to for days now,
as i didnt find clear cut answers, im asking for your help.
i know i can flash a the stock 4.3 rom using custom recovery (i use TWRP) but that will result in wiping my data.
im interested in updating my AT&T HTC One to 4.3 without losing my data.
note that i currently have an unlocked bootloader, root (supersu) and im S-OFF (used Revone)
i already figured that i need to unroot my device and re-lock the bootloader in order to receive the OTA update properly.
my questions are as follows:
1) do i need to flash back to stock recovery in order to update or is unrooting and relocking bootloader good enough?
2) since im S-OFF, updating to 4.3 will update my hboot but will keep me S-OFF? or will it turn it on? or maybe it wont even update and stay on 1.44?
3) after i update to 4.3, re-unlocking my bootloader will once again wipe all data?
4) after updating to 4.3, in order to re-root my device i follow the same procedure i did on 4.1.2?
5) since im not using an AT&T sim card, i had to flash some wifi files in order to bypass carrier check and turn on wifi tethering, i imagine im gonna have to do that again on 4.3, will the same files work or will i need to wait for a new hack\workaround to come out? (i used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285047)
i have a few more questions that i cant recall right now, too much google digging for info got me confused.
will add them if\when i remember.
Thanks in Advance.
You don't need to relock bootloader or remove root, you do need stock recovery and stock ROM. Hboot will be updated, S-Off will remain. Your data will not be lost. Follow same procedure for root.

Thank you for the quick reply.
a few followup questions if u dont mind.
1) where do i get the stock recovery files?
2) how can i identify the correct ROM associated with htc one 4.3? i know i need to use Cingular as my HTC is an AT&T one, but the roms versions are listed by AT&T firmware.
3) do i flash stock recovery and then do a regular OTA update?

Just a quick question: why do you want to go through all that hassle to receive the OTA? Since you're S-Off you're able to flash unsigned firmware. The only reason I can think of using OTA, is if someone is S-On and therefore cannot update firmware; an unlocked bootloader allows you to flash ROM, kernel, and radio, but not firmware. with S-Off you CAN do that.
One piece of advice, in either case, DO NOT GO S-ON EVER!
Or did I misunderstand you?

There are files in the firmware.zip that wipe the phone, removing those files means it won't wipe. Often boot.img and recovery.img are also removed from the firmware you download from here.

What do you mean by data? your internal storage/sdcard with pictures, music, etc. or your apps?
When flashing a new ROM with different base (eg 4.2.2 to 4.3) a wipe is recommended (that would wipe your apps and their data, not sdcard), but you could use Titanium Backup, Helium, etc. to back those up and restore.
You can do a dirty flash, which would not wipe your apps, but could lead to some potential problems with some apps; in which case you would need to reflash with wipe.
Anyhow, be careful with going back to stock first, because when you flash the stock recovery, it will/could wipe your phone completely including sdcard. Happened to me while I was testing a few things, and just flashing stock recovery and accessing it, wiped my apps and sdcard.
Hit us with some more details, what ROM (etc.) are you on now, and where do you want to go.
This is where I am now (attached pics)
I would simply like to upgrade my HTC to 4.3
I would like to do that without the hassle of wiping my phone and restoring apps data.
But if it's necessary I'm willing to backup and restore the apps data.
As u said, my SD CARD contents will no be deleted? ie photos, music etc.
From what u guys told me, I gather that doing an OTA is not as simple as I thought.
Can u please tell me the easiest way to upgrade?
or even better, what my options are?
2nd pic attached, for some reason it let me attach only 1 pic.
Thanks in Advance!

In my humble opinion, you should do a full back up of everything (nandroid, apps+data AND sdcard) and copy all that to your PC.
Whichever way you proceed, you're going to be moving from Android 4.1.2 to 4.2.2+, that will change the file structure on your phone: in 4.1.2 sdcard points to /data/media/ but as of 4.2.2+ it now points to /data/media/0/ (this is due to multiuser support in 4.2.2+).
For some, whether OTA or flashing a custom ROM, three things have happened:
1- the sdcard (pictures, music, etc) files were moved correctly to /data/media/0
2- the files were duplicated in /data/media AND /data/media/0, so they had to manually delete the duplicates (root enabled file explorer needed)
3- the files were not moved at all, and had to be manually moved from /data/media/ to /data/media/0/ (root enabled file explorer needed)
Note: that once you're on 4.2.2+ /data/media/ will no longer show up when you connect to your PC, only /data/media/0, hence why you need a root enabled file explorer to access /data/media/
If it was me (and I like a clean phone ), I would flash the new custom ROM in recovery, then while still in recovery format the /data/media/ (/sdcard/), boot up and let the ROM setup the sdcard as brand new.
And then setup the device from scratch. Copying all pictures, music, etc. back using your PC.
For backup/restore of USER apps & data, I would take a look at these:
* Titanium Backup
* Helium
* SMS Backup & Restore
* Call Log Backup & Restore
and possibly the built in HTC Backup.
Titanium can back up the data of system apps, but it's not recommended to restore these especially between the large gap from 4.1.2 to 4.3; usually you could restore WiFi, Bluetooth and a few more settings, but there have been reports that due to the changes in all of these, the restore of system data could/was causing problems.
Finally, if you want to upgrade your firmware, use vomer's guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2365506. The firmwares there have boot.img (so no need to reflash RIM), recovery.img (so no need to reflash custom recovery) removed as well as the files that would wipe the sdcard. So you can flash the firmware without any negative effects.
Of course you could just do all the backups, and try dirty flashing (without wipe), and see how that works out for you. In case you run into problems (eg apps force closing, missing widgets, bad Wifi, bluetooth, or mobile data), you can then reflash with full wipe.
This is all my personal opinion, so don't know if anybody disagrees with my thoughts.
EDIT: if you use CWM recovery, you should also take a look at this after upgrading: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991657
Hit the thanks button if I helped
Sounds good. Tyvm!!!
I'd like a clean phone as well.
So lets me know if I get it straight:
1) flash Rom in recovery (after backing up media and/or non-system apps)
2) wiping SD CARD clean
3) flash firmware in recovery
4) flash radio in recovery
Did I get it right?
Again thanks on advance

Yes pretty much, the most important part is the backup, I would do:
1- a nandroid backup in recovery (just in case you want to come back to that)
2- perform a Titanium Backup/Helium of everything (you don't need to restore system apps/data, but it's good to have them anyway)
3- perform HTC Backup (I do it, but have never restored from it yet)
4- copy everything from the sdcard (which would include above) to PC
firmware (modified versions by vomer) and/or radio can be flashed at any time without any risk of loosing apps or sdcard.
You should be good to go.
PS: In case you format sdcard and /system/ and find yourself without an OS (by accident), you will have to use 1 of 3 methods to get the ROM you want to flash on the phone:
1- adb sideload
2- adb push
3- OTG cable
Which firmware and radio version I need?
Whats the modification done in vomer's firmwares? Just removed files to prevent data wipe?

Firmware and radio are pretty much up to you; especially radio, where newer doesn't always mean better, it's very user specific, but you can flash them so easily in recovery back and forth. (I have them on my phone all the time and experiment depending on my location)
Also, just remember once you go to 2.x firmware or above the touchscreen drivers will no longer work with a 4.1.2 ROM, but then again why would you want to go back
The files in vomer's firmware that are removed are:
1- stock kernel (boot.img), otherwise you'd have to reflash ROM.zip after updating firmware
2- stock recovery (recovery.img), otherwise you'd have to reflash custom recovery after updating firmware
3- I don't recall, but some firmware package had a files in them that would wipe the sdcard (but haven't seen those for a while)
Firmware and radios are all available in vomer's guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2365506
about wiping the /data/media/ folder after flashing the ROM,
will i be prompted to do it or i'll do it manually?
sorry for all the questions, i know i can see for myself when i actually do it, but im scared since its my first android device ever

you'll have to do it manually, I'm using CWM, so I have to go to "mounts and storage" and then "format /data and /data/media (/sdcard)"
hmm, on that thought after formatting and booting up your ROM, check if all the apps are there, some get installed to /data/app, and I wonder if the above would delete those.
Wouldn't be a big deal, you would just copy the ROM back to your sdcard using your PC and reflash it. (Maybe do that anyway)
At least you know you'll have a clean sdcard without any possibility of duplicates or other files you no longer need (eg temporary files from some apps)
Alright, I've done it!!!
Upgraded to 4.3 stock Rom, which came with 3.17 firmware.
(used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2476204)
Flashed AT&T OTA radio.
Even found a new tether hack for 4.3 that will allow me to activate tethering while not on AT&T network
Thanks a lot for all the help,
Much appreciated.
One more question tho if that's ok,
Are there any downsides to upgrading my firmware from 3.17 to the latest 3.62?

Congratz.
As for firmware, I can't think of any downsides to upgrading it. Since you're S-Off you can always downgrade it back to 3.17 if you find any incompatibilities, though I dont think there will be any.
Alright ty.
The current firmware I have is 3.17.502...
Which came with the Rom.zip I flashed
I only found 3.17.402... on xda
Would u happen to know where I could get 3.17.502... ??
As I wouldn't want any problems or incompatibilities with the 402 one.
Also should I bother updating my hboot (if it's even possible)??
Thanks again.

Are you sure the ROM.ZIP contained firmware?? Usually, ROM.ZIP only contains the ROM and firmware is separate; also because the two have different flashing methods:
1- custom ROM is flashed using custom recovery
2- firmware is flashed in fastboot RUU mode
can you post a "fastboot getvar all" (remove IMEI and s/n before posting) to see the details.
