ok - i have a G1 ... fully functional etc
anyway - i started looking into putting SenseUI on it - and then about 15mins ago came across the cyanogen thread and became very intrigured....
i have a couple questions
1. with the latest release of the ROM, is the phone fully functional?? - no restrictions etc? tmo doesnt mind or restrict you etc? - i still want all features working
2. is there a step by step on installing the rom? - i looked around a bit but found multiple conflicting instructions/recommendations -
3. WORST case scenario, can i always go right back to where im at now? - official tmo/google release, fully functional, normal g1? - or am i stuck
my biggest concern is ruining the phone - im just getting in to G1 editing etc - ive always been too nervous because its my main phone and only phone - but i used to do all kinds of crazy things with my old blackberry - beta releases from overseas etc etc - just havent gotten the balls to mess with my g1
but ill be honest, i hate the iphone (not sure why) - but im getting kind of fed up with the G1 - i love it, dont get me wrong - but the add-ons/functions i read in cyans rom intrigured me a lot
so with all this being said - please answer my questions listed above
i dont care so much about the files/apps - i can always re-download the apps i use etc... and the pics/vids i can back up to my pc
thanks in advance!!!!
the current stable release of cyanogen's rom in 4.0.1 and it is very stable and much faster than stock cupcake. the only thing missing as far as i can tell is the myfaves app. but i do not care bc i can update that online. everything in market works. plus many extras from donut.
are you rooted? if not, go to the market.
search for recovery flasher.
download it.
then go to cyanogen's thread and download 4.0.1.
put it on the root of your sdcard (upmost folder).
use the recovery flasher app to apply cyanogen's recovery image 1.4 on your phone.
power off your phone.
hold home and power to boot into recovery.
it should have a green android with text in front of it.
go to flash any .zip.
select the 4.0.1 file you put on your sdcard from above.
hit home to apply it.
after it finishes and tells you to reboot the phone then select reboot phone on the menu.
let the phone boot up.
may take 5 to 10 minutes.
then look into partitioning your sdcard for apps2sd and a linux-swap partition if you want those options.
yes you can easily revert the phone to stock rom like you never rooted it.
when you boot the phone up the first time, if you get a lot of force closes then boot into recovery.
go to the recovery console
hit enter
type fix_permissions
then type reboot
if that does not work then you will have to wipe the phone from the recovery menu and re-flash the rom
any other questions
trying it now - (crosses fingers)
its been on the NEW adroid splash screen ( the one with the android on a skateboard) for a while now... it stops highlighting once in a while and flashes off - then starts again... its been about 7-8mins i think..... is this normal?
got it!
thanks!!!
your welcome. did you have root or did you use the recovery flasher app? because if you used the recovery flasher app there is a quick question i have
i didnt have root at all prior to me trying this tonight
something i would try. power your phone down. hold the camera button and power button (this boots up into bootloader) if you get a rainbow screen then you will want to flash the hard spl(androids on skateboards with a white background). so you can you use fastboot. here is where you can get the hard spl. just boot into recovery and flash it. i do not know if flashing the hard spl will wipe your phone like flashing haykuro's spl will, but you would much rather have the hard spl than not having it so the pros far outweigh the cons. welcome to your newly rooted phone. if you have any questions feel free to pm me and i will do my best to answer them.

Thanks for the step by step guide David...
I would like to ask a question on ROM types. I am currently using JF's 1.51. I have no problem with this (occasional force closes, which I suspect is from the SetCPU app). I have hearing lots of updates from CyanogenMod's ROM. What are the main differences? From your experience, what do you think are the disadvantages of CyanogenMod's ROM versus JF's 1.51? Would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

sorry i almost cried when i saw disadvantages lol.
1 you do not have to overclock bc the phone is set up to overclock when it needs it and to underclock when it doesn't need it.
2 apps2sd is automatic if you have a second partition. there's a great guide for easily partition your phone with cyanogen's 1.31+ recovery image.
3 many cool things from donut.
4 a lot of themes are made for cm roms
5 a lot of stuff too much for me to list
if you really want to try it just get his latest recovery image. download 4.0.1 or whatever the latest stable release is. make a nandroid back up. flash the rom, and if you don't like it, or want to go back to JF then you can easily
David, Thanks for this. Just for kicks. If i want to reset to the factory defaults all I need to select is the "wipe data/factory reset" from recovery?
I think my post just disappeared...anyway... David, Just for kicks, If I need the phone back to original settings, I need to select the "wipe data/factory default" option in recovery? This will keep the new recovery method, just deletes the rom?
You will keep the recovery image. Yes it will just clear you data and stuff off the phone. Things like recovery image, SPL, and radio do not get wiped. If you do wipe just reflash a rom and you will be good to go.

I like your SPL on your signiture. Im guessing its the danger SPL
Yeah it references the danger spl lol. I think thats the feeling that anyone gets when flashing it. I know i was like i really hope this works or i'm going to be sad.
Original question(s) seem to be solved.
Closing thread
firmware version:1.5
kernel version:2.6.27-00392-g8312baf ([email protected])
build number: dream_devphone-userdebug1.5 CRB21147201 test keys.
im wondering is there is any update for this ive been seeing the 1.6 update around but have no idea how to install it. i also want to restore the phone back to the original theme.. thanks
use one of enomther's 1.6 roms. flash in recovery with the file on your sdcard named update.zip.
how and where do i find it?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538456
i am being way too nice. it was the second non-stickied thread in the dev forum.
one more question all i do is put this on the sdscard as update.zip right and which one would you recommend
AOSP-1.6_r1.2 + ADP DRC92 - (Supports ALL android Languages!) the first one under the donut builds would probably be the best one. i personally use cyanogen's roms, but that one is the closest to a jesusfreke rom you will get for 1.6.
yes rename it to update.zip, the power down your phone, boot into recovery with home and power, wipe your phone with alt and w, the apply the update.zip with alt and s, then reboot the phone when that is done with home and back. then wait a while for the phone to boot up, and you will be set.
what is the expansion pack all about do i wanna get that too and do i do it the same way?
yes, you flash it the same way, it just has some extra stuff that is not included in the standard build.
ok after months of putting off playing with my phone I have decieded to mod it. Today I have successfully hacked it with the help of the wiki here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
working great but I can't find an answer on how to play with other roms like hero, blur, and 2.0 etc.
can anyone please give me some help this forum is hard to find a clear way to anything since there seems to be 1 million ways to do it.
thanks in advance.
ian
Please keep all questions to the Questions and Answers forum. The development forum is for development threads only.
Flashing other ROMs is the same as flashing Cyanogen.
so i add the 1.6 rom image and another rom not cyanogen and then flash in the cyanogen recovery menu as described on his wiki?
Well before you try
blur etc..
Your going to have to make sure you have the correct radio, spl.
Boot into fastboot mode with camera plus power
and whats your spl/radio
if your radio is
2.22.19.26I
then thats good
if your spl is 1.33.2005
then your good to go for hero etc..
if not then your going to need to download the saphire radio/spl to be able to try other ROM's
i have the right radio but where do i find the spl?
also on his wiki it has how to install custom spl should i do this?
also does the apps to sd thing installed in his build? how do i make it work? or find it
Make sure when in bootloader, look for PVT or DVT. If you see 'DVT', do not flash the Haykuro spl.
is that the one with rainbow or androids and skateboards?

ok look i really want to help you so i am
the spl to load other roms etc is going to be found here
http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
Download the radio 2.22. whatever
and the 1.33.2005 spl
MAKE SURE YOU FLASH THE RADIO FIRST!!!
EVEN IF YOU ALREADY HAVE IT!!!
SOMETIMES NOT FLASHING THE RADIO AND GOING STRAIGHT TO THE SPL CAN BRICK YOUR PHONE
SO RADIO THEN SPL!!!
THEN THE ROM(I WOULD DO CYAN AGAIN)
IN ORDER TO FLASH HIS NEWEST ROM
FLASH HE 1.6 RECOVERY IMAGE FOR THE DREAM FROM THE HTC WEBSITE
THEN ITLL REBOOT BYITSELF THEN FLASH THE CYAN ROM ITSELF AND IT SHOULD WORK..
IN ORDER TO GET APPS 2 SD WORKING YOU HAVE TO HAVE A EXT2/3/4 WHATEVER YOU CHOICE
BUT YOULL MOST LIKELY END UP WITH A EXT2/3
SEARCH THE FORUMS FOR ROOTING AND SETTING UP AN EXT2
Make sure you have a PVT board.

right above where you saw the 2.22. It should say pvt 32b
if not then youll have to use the other spl
that i have no knowledge of so your stuck on that 1
i have pvt 32b too
so to flash another custom rom i just add the 1.6 rom image and the one I want to use and flash it like i did the latest cyanogen one?
which roms are best for hero, blur? and work 100%
this is what is on cyanogens wiki after what i did? although I have 4.2.3.1
Hard SPL (optional) - ONLY FOR HTC DREAM (G1)!!!
If you choose, you can install a custom SPL. This will free up approximatly 20MB on the system partition. As of CyanogenMOD 4.2.3, this is not necessary. However, with the release of Android 2.0, it might become necessary to flash a new SPL.
ONLY follow these steps if you've followed the previous steps on this page (or if you manually flashed your radio with the latest version). Otherwise, you will break your phone.
1. Go to http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/Install_Hard_SPL and download the SPL File
2. Place the SPL file on the root of your SD card.
3. Power off your phone.
4. Press and hold Home and then press Power to boot into recovery mode.
5. Once in recovery mode, Press ALT+A (or select "apply any zip from sd") and select the SPL file you downloaded to apply the update from the SD card. (If you do not see a menu / text on screen, ie - you see an exclamation mark, press ALT+L to show the menu.)
6. After the update is complete, hold Home + Back to restart.
7. Once your phone has booted up, turn your phone off so that we can make sure the update worked.
8. Press and hold the Camera and Power buttons to boot into your SPL. It should have three androids on skateboards at the bottom, with a white background. If you still have the four-color rainbow, go back and try again. If you press HOME you will start this all over again. So DO NOT. Press Action. Then either way, press Call, Menu and End at the same time to reboot.

ok good so im guessing you updated the radio/spl
correct? If not then you cant go to any other roms
unless you do so
and to answer your question
you dont need to flash the 1.6 recovery image again to goto other roms. Thats only for his builds because google got on his ass for redist.. There apps so yeah
and right now the best heros out are mlign and kings and jacski sense whatever heros has gotten better since youve been here so check m out
but blur is not even close to stable yet
no wifi no gps no vibrate
pulse is broken
and 2.0 just barely came out no ones made anything yet
here is what i did exactly let me know but everything seems to be the right ones let me know before I go further.

ok the hardspl is crap
your going to want haykuros spl
so like i said download the new radio/spl
flash radio again(even if you already have it)
Then flash the haykuros spl
then flash a hero rom
but if you dont have an ext2/swap your not going to want to flash hero cuz itll be slow as hell
so maybe this custom spl is just to free up space?
i did not do the hard spl I did everything above it, read this and let me know.

YEAH EVERYTHING GOOD
BUT IF YOU WANT HERO/BLUR
THEN YOUR GOING TO WANT TO FLASH THE RADIO/SPL ( THE ONE I PROVIDED A LINK TO)
IF YOU SKIP THESE STEPS AND TRY TO INSTALL HERO ETC.. THEN IT WONT EVEN BOOT.
AND ANOTHER THING DID YOU DO THE EXT2 PARTITION
IF NOT DO IT BEFORE YOU FLASH THE RADIO/SPL SO ITS EASIER IN THE LONG RUN.
SO STEP BY STEP FOR YOU TO DO RIGHT NOW
create and ext2 500mb/swap 96mb
then when your finished
look i have to go
so follow as i said then flash any hero you should be good
flash the radio/spl (radio first)
that i provided a link to
when your done message me

Simply use the one click rooting from www.theunlockr.com and it will show you how to root (or if you have done so) how to flash new ROM's... the EASIEST way possible.
loaded this hero theme

got this running have ext3 like was told
did not update radio or spl yet waiting to here this from a few different sources first.
Ok, i have a need for a bit of help. I rooted and flashed to Jesusfreaks adp. I tried to get it to RC33. LONG story short, JF is installed. My kernel is 2.6.27-00392-g8312baf
NO clue what that means but im at fireware 1.5 and Build number CRB43
I want to get to Cyanogen. It looks a little smoother then JF and more frequently update. BTWi have a G1
I followed this guide TO THE T!
simplehelp.net/2009/10/04/how-to-install-cyanogenmod-4-1-99-on-your-g1-android-phone/
and after i rebooted, it took forever to boot (which is usual)
All my apps crashed. My desktop didnt even load. It had force closes like *android.phone and *android.mail
I figured it was because i was trying to mod off of the Jesus freak setup. Can anyone help me out and tell me how to either COMPLETELY wipe my phone and restore it to its origional G1 official build and then i can re-root to Cyanogen OR a way to mod from Jesusfreak to Cyanogen
copy and paste this into your browser... follow the directions...
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod[/url]
Just read that guide over and thats all exactly what i already did. I have tried to signed-dream flash and then after taht the cyan mod. It installed the OS no problem. It just didnt have any programs working. IT is as if the phone had the OS but no program files. It wouldnt even load the phone at all. it was a black screen with a status bar and infinate force close screens. Any idea what that is a result of? I had to flash recover back to my JF os
Try this:
1. Flash recovery Amon_Ra (Great improvment on JF and Cyans recovery)
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
select console from the menu
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img
2. Boot into recovery (Home+Power)
3. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
4. Wipe EXT
5. Repair EXT
6. Flash Super D (I suggest Super D only because there is less flashing involved and it's a great improvement on the Cyan roms.. super quick too)
From here you should be set.
so if i already have root and all that, do i still need to follow step 1? Like flash with Amon_Ra? or can i just wipe, and reload the D rom? also your rom says its myHero2.2? is that a good rom? Im just trying to find the best rom to use on a g1. I have read up on Jesusfreak, its very stable, but it is pretty much just a open version of the regular tmobile os. THe only difference is the apps store is an older version. In your opinion, what is the best G1 rom and what are its percs?
thanks for all your help. This has been a working progress haha, finding a good rom and sticking with it. and can you give me a list of all the files needed for the best rom? if they have a step by step guide to it, thatd be great! i would look myself, but im still new at all this and there are like a bajillion different roms/ ways to load the rom. Im a PSP hacker, not an experienced phone guru

I would load the new recovery and then flash Super D. Again it's the most stable and is wicked fast. Yeah used to use myHero2.2 but i haven't updated my sig in a while. It's getting mundane at this point.

This is going to be more of a difficult question to answer. It just depends on what you're after. I really prefer Super D because of it's speed. Again its built from the Cyan roms so you get Cyan + extras. That's what I would go with. Simple, easy, and fast.

Well that's the cool part about the community here at XDA. All the files are set up for you. To flash a rom:
Code:
Download the .zip file and place it on the root of your sd card
Reboot into recovery
Make a backup (i prefer switchrom)
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Wipe EXT
Repair EXT
Flash rom from .zip
Reboot.
It's that easy.
Hi guys,
The power button on my nexus one died, and I tried to get the phone replaced by htc singapore.. but all efforts were futile. So they replaced the "Rigid FLex" jacket for free and gave me back the phone..
I dont really have any complaints, other than the power button still feels flimsy and I dont trust it, since it causes a lot of inconvenience.
NOW, can I use the volume key or trackball to wake the phone up ?
Would any of these buttons Die like the power button (are they equally flimsy ? )
Ive been reading on custom-roms which will add trackball-wake-up option..
-Could you point me to the most stable rom? (Im running froyo frf91)
-If rooting is required, could you point me to a newbies guide to rooting..
Thank you

cyanogen rom can do trackball wake up...trackball unlock...and pressing menu will lock your phone..
i suggest you to download rom manager from market...

Thanx..
I did use the search button, but it gave me tonns of threads, with a 100 pages in each..
So I had to start this thread.
My phone is unlocked.. (sim-free)..
There is no SIM-locked Nexus in existence, as mentioned multiple times. "Unlocked" stands for "Unlocked bootloader", doesn't have anything to do with SIM. Yours is locked, since you just got it and never unlocked it.
I suggest you read the Wiki instead of continuing this thread, read all the guides, use 1-click root application and DO NOT use ROM Manager. Learn to install the custom recovery yourself, and to install ROMs using the recovery. Everything is written in the Wiki.
The most stable yet heavily customized Froyo ROM would probably be Enomther's, which I personally use.

Thanks for the clarification.
Hi, i was reading and stumbled on Softroot.
I cannot find more info on it..
Its apparently, temporary rooting.. like jailbreaking..
Can I do a softroot to achieve the track-ball wakeup ?
Use Universal Androot.
There is no "temporary rooting", and rooting isn't equal to jailbreaking, it's a different thing, done for different purposes. Rooting is permanent, otherwise it's worthless. Having 1 session of root access (until reboot) doesn't accomplish anything, unless all you want to do is delete some system application or something of the sort.
@jack_R1
Hi, I used the 1Click Androot app to Root my device. Im backing up apps and settings using titanium backup.
My next step is to flash the custom rom.
Im deciding between Enomthers 2.11.3 NOT Pre_Themed ROM, and Nightly's CM6 for Nexus one..
So to clarify things, I need to
1 rename the Custom rom to Update.zip and paste it to the Root of SD card.
2 Rename the Amon recovery image to recomevry.img and paste to root of SD.
3 Turn on the phone while holding Volume Down
4 Select "BOOTLOADER" from the menu
5 Select "RECOVERY" from the menu
6 Select "Flash update.zip" or "Flash ZIP file"
7 Turn off verification, if such option is presented
8 Select your downloaded ROM image
9 Wait for the flash to finish successfully, if it didn't - do not continue!
10 Return to main recovery menu
11 Select "Wipe"
12 Select "Wipe data / factory reset"
13 Select "Wipe Dalvik cache"
14 Return to main recovery menu
--> Reboot the phone
?
Is there anything missing? please lemme know. I wanna do this asap.
Also, Im already updated to Froyo Radio (v4.06...) so I do no figit with radio .. correct?
-Also, when do I configure SpareParts? (before or after flashing) ?
-What is the difference between pre-themed black text and pre-themed white text? (black notification bar with white text on top)?
Thanks!
You got some things confused.
1. No need to rename it. Using custom recovery lets you flash anything with any name.
2. Since you rooted using 1-click root, you don't have a recovery yet. You need to flash it before you reboot to it. Read and execute: Nexus One Wiki / Recovery Images / Amon_Ra's Recovery / using flash_image method. Link for your convenience. You could also go to Developer section and download the latest 1.8.0.1 Amon_Ra's recovery instead of 1.7.0.1 in the Wiki. I'll update the Wiki to give a choice between the two.
3. Continue your list till the end.
Nothing needed for the radio, if you're already on 4.06.
Spare Parts will appear only after flashing the ROM.
Pre-Themed black text is regular, white text is for black notification bar - just as you wrote.
Personally, I run Enomther's since Froyo is out. Before that I was using CM. You might try them both and see which you like more.
Well, thanks for the reply.. Ill look into it after the ADB hurdle.
Presently, Im stuck at the ADB step..
I got the android sdk package, got nexus one drivers.. but for whatever reason, it wont show my device in cmd prompt..
I have pretty much memorised the adb for beginers guide.. but no luck..
(Im on Win Xp)
This is turning out to be a pain in the rear end..
You don't need ADB to flash recovery.
Follow the guide I've pointed you to.
Return to ADB once you're already on the custom ROM, it won't run away.
Flashing the recovery image was quite a task!
Luckily I googled and stumbled on a thread where YOU mentioned to download and install BusyBox.
So yes, Ive flashed it finally..
Im downloading the Enomthers ROM now.. slow net connection.. will load it in a while if it allows.
Thanx a bunch!
hi..
Done installing custom rom.. it was pretty staright forward once recovery img was flashed.
I would like to add some info, for someone who stumbles on this.
In recovery options,
For backup/Restore.. when you select Nand+Ext, and end up getting 'Error...Run nandroid-mobile.sh', press back to goto the main menu, toggle USB MS (mass storage) on, plug it to the computer, delete the nandroid folder, and try again.
If you still get the error, delete nandroid folder, and this time select 'Nand backup only'. if succesful, proceed to copy the nandroid folder to your computer.
So far Ive installed themed enothmer rom.. and its decent.
Will customize it tomo..
For the time-being, ive noticed one issue/bug .. the LED light blink interval is too quick even on selecting 'Slow'.
Thanx Jack!
You're welcome.
Thanks for reminding about the need for busybox to execute chmod and such. Added to Wiki instructions.
Hi,
Now that Ive successfully flashed a custom rom, and its working fine..
I noticed an update to enomthers rom. (v2.12.2)
I want to flash this rom, so do I have to re-flash recovery? and then flash this new rom?
Or just flash the new rom? but then do I wipe/factory reset and wipe Dalvik cache of the device?
Actually restoring the data (especially mesages and apps) is quite an issue, it takes a while (considering im on EDGE)..
also, is it recommended to make an apps2sd partition on SD card? I did get low memory warning on internal memory.
and last, I just want the black status bar and 'some' custom icons (not all), so is there a way to install these on otherwise stock looking enomther rom?
I know they are some noobish questions but I need answers..
Thanx
You don't touch the recovery once it's flashed, as long as it's working. You just flash the ROM using the recovery that you already installed. And don't do any wipes - so you won't have to restore the data.
Apps2EXT (EXT2 partition for apps on SD card) is great and highly recommended.
You can apply themes, simple as complex, using morphs.
Hi Guys,
Need your opinions again.
I was extremely satisfied with Enomthers 2.14.4 rom, till the update notifiation appeared.
Ive waited long enough for an update from Enom, but he has his reasons, and I dont see an update in the pipeline.
So I need to get a new rom & it should have have trackball wake up/vol keys wakeup (cant afford to break the power key).
Also Gingerbread, and Apps2SD (+).
Now Ive come across two roms,
a) Nightly's CM rom
b) GRI40, system dump + unmodified stock n rooted rom.
So which one should I get?
Also whats the difference between nightlys CM rom and CM rom ?
Also, I see I need to update the radio, so this has to be done before flashing rom or after?
I have flashed AMON RA's recovery 2.0, do I need to flash anything else?
Remove the update notification and return to being happy.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Stock GRI40 doesn't have any mod for trackball/volume wake. So for now you're out of options - you have to use a custom compiled AOSP Gingerbread, which point you towards CM7/SuperGinger/Leo's Ginger/etc. Currently none of those are as stable as Enom's (I've tried 2 of them).
I can also suggest flashing FOTAKill (use Google to find, learn and download) and keeping with Enom's. That's what I'm doing now. And after a brief experience with MyTouch 4G, I'm seriously considering flashing Froyo Desire port.
Thanks for the prompt replies. Really appreciate it.
For now I can live with enomthers rom. Its not giving any issues. Its got everything I need, other than gingerbread.
the Gingerbread update is glued to the taskbar, and doesnt pop-up at all (doesnt intervene/hinder ) in regular operations.
So ill patiently wait as well
thanks again guys!
