how can I reset my windows? - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know why my system freezes very often. I tend to reset my windows mobile. But I am afraid I will lose some apps I have right now. Is it possible? How to reset?

softreset never delete anything it's just like a reboot on a pc
hardreset does put your pda back to how it was when you got it

Hey Rudegar, thanks for your link and I know it doesn't hurt my app.
Other question for you. Can I upgrade my Windows Mobile to the lastest verison? Is that the same with resetting my windows without losing my existing app? Thanks again.

First of all, this thread is for accessories.
Updating the phone OS really does wipe EVERYTHING. So backup is an advice...
Have a look at Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 ROM development
I think you'll find something to your liking
Before even thinking of flashing you phone, READ about all the do's and don'ts.
One wrong action may brick your phone!

The only resetting that won't remove installed apps is a soft reset by pressing the reset button under the battery cover, removing the battery, or utilizing some sort of software reset utility like PHM Soft Reset. Upgrading or performing a "Clear Storage" under Settings/System will wipe everything.
What you might want to look at is when did the freezing start? Did it start after installing a new application and if so, if you remove it does it continue. If you've done any hacking or "tweaks" to the registry this can also cause freezing. Been there before. Good luck.

Tilt keeps freezing on green windows moblile screen

My phone keeps freezing on this green windows mobile screen, and no matter how many times i reset nothing happens. I have to do a hard reset in order to get the phone working again. It happens often whenever i turn the phone off and on or change out the battery. Any idea? I am running the stock ATT rom, without the added junk (after i do i reset and it starts installing the extra apps i soft reset the phone). I installed the stock kaiser htc home plug in and thats about it.
i thinks its time for a new rom.
to keep it simple and basic =

this happened to me just two days ago. phone froze up and wouldnt start. i had to do a hard reset.
hold both softkeys and use the stylus to reset the phone. (hole at the bottom of phone).
this will do a hard reset.
it sucks that you dont have a sprit back up of all your data. i have several checkpoints of my data. i suggest you do the same if you do decide to hard reset.

I do have backups, and it continues to happen. I finally just reinstalled all my apps today without restoring a backup to see if it helps but I doubt it.
Do you have HardSPL or have you changed your radio? Anything like that? Have you previously flashed other roms?
nope stock and stock. I did first notice this when I tried to use the kaiser tweak utility. but i have since never installed it
Did you upgrade from the original 1.57 at&t Rom to the recently released 1.62 at&t Rom?
If so are your restoring a backup from the 1.57 Rom onto the 1.62 Rom. That is a no-no....
Remove your SD card and do a soft reboot. If it still hangs, then it is a ROM issue. If it boots OK then there is a program on your SD card that the device is having problems with, in either linking to or opening.
Copy all the SD card files and programs on your PC. Format the SD card. Start installing the programs one at a time and see which program is the culprit. Remove it and all those that add to the problem.
If you were happy with the original ROM, then do not change to another.

Hey Kyphur.. good to see you here.. What else can you do to avoid keeping remnants of the previous ROM? How can you avoid restoring a back-up?.

That's a loaded question. Personally I have the cab files for all of my programs on my storage card. I've consolidated some useful programs into a single cab and modified most cabs to install into a cleaner start menu structure.
Then I use KaiserTweak to set the few remaining Reg settings that I don't have already set in my cooked Rom.
My today plugins (PocketBreeze, PocketWeather & iLauncher) all have import/export functions so I use that so I don't have to reconfigure them every time.
Finally I have an Exchange Server account for my contacts and e-mails.

Removing Ext ROM data

Hi guys
I upgraded my XDA II a long time ago from 2003 to WM5, and all was fine, however any time I put a new version on 6.1, I still get the old programs installed from a previous version. I tried "downgrading" back to 2003 and there it works fine, however any time I install a 6.1 ROM, the old apps (and their error messages) keep coming back.
Is there a way that I can COMPLETELY wipe my Himalaya device and then install a 6.1 ROM from fresh?
Your help is greatly appreciated
Jim
do you HARD RESET, clear storage?, i mean the steps where you set it to NO, YES, YES? hard reset for 2006/2005 is different from 2003.
Hey Paul
Thanks for the fast reply... The answer to that part is NO... And that's because the camera button on my XDA is broken and so am unable to do that key sequence...
Any other ways to do the hard reset (with an application or such like)
Thanks
Jim
thats highly unlikely... the new roms(wm6.x) arent hard resetted by the usual manner the old ones were... for wm6.x the whole no, yes, yes routine is necessary... unless maybe some1 builds a rom that isnt hard reset persistent(thats wht they write with these roms n i think thats why these roms dont get cleared with the old hard reset).
Thanks for that...
... So if I understand you correctly, I DO need to run the NO, YES, YES routine to clear out all the other rubbish on my system... But if I can't do the keystrokes, can anyone think of a way that I can emulate this...
Thanks
Jim
My understanding is that there is no work around for this. How is the button broken? Is the whole button not there? or is the button there but the internal workings are broken?

why HARD RESET after flash?

I noticed that a recommendation to "hard reset" is best after each new flash. So technically why is it recommended to do it?
My self, I have flashed my Kiser many times without doing a hard reset and it always worked fine.
Can anyone shed some light on this subject...

The hard reset will wipe uot some info, settings, files from previous rom that were not wiped out by the flash. Sometimes it can happen that after flash some files,... from previous rom remain in the phone.

Thank you Mikulec for your feedback
I have a good background in chip programming skills and I thought that installing a new ROM will erase all the setting from the chip i.e the block of memory will be erased and replaced with a new one.
My understanding is that upon hard reset, Windows Mobile does (something), which leads to alignment, etc etc.... During that (something), roms might do specific actions. Maybe registry settings, or stuff into ram.. Just guessing what it does, but I've read multiple times it does (something).
If I had to guess, and I can sometimes be right p) I'd say...
That the Hard Reset completely clears all of the storage memory allocated to the device leaving only the ROM data; where as flashing a ROM only overrides the existing ROM image.
I know the CustomRUU issues a task 32 instead of a 28 after flashing, maybe that's the difference: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=334890&highlight=CustomRUU

TyTN II problem restarting

When i restart it activates the first time installation thingie... it does it even with shutdown and soft reset and hardreset.
i used 3 roms and they all did the same thing
enter the first time installation thingie
can any1 help me?
I got caught in a loop one time when i was trying to do a hard reset. When it came back from clearing the memory and I did the calibrate screen thing, I would soft reset prior to the bloatware installation. When it restarted it would go right back into the clearing data screen of the hard reset.
Eventually I let the bloatware install, then did a hard reset and that seemed to clear it out.
Not sure if that will help.
I have no idea what you just said .. :$ sry
but is there a way to TOTALLY clean my Pocket pc?

A Hard reset will wipe out everything that you have installed on the phone, and you will be back with the operating system, whether it is a custom rom or an ATT Rom or HTC Rom.
Are you talking about wiping the "hard drive" clean with no operation system? I do not know how to do that, but why would you want to do that anyway.
phooey, i'm having similar problems... hard reset (holding soft keys and pressing reset with stylus) doesn't stop the issue from happening again. -- back to factory reset when rebooting either soft or hard. not sure if this is the same issue...if so i double posted sorry.
hey jklarich, you have posted a new thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=564537
...so consider this post of mine a reply to this thread as well as the one created by you (referenced above).
NEITHER of you have mentioned WHICH ROMs you tried when the problem started.
NEITHER of you have mentioned the HardSPL version(s) you have on your devices.
NEITHER of you have categorically clarified that you have gone through the steps in the FAQs of the ROMs you've tried.
BOTTOM LINE: always provide more information!
now with lack of information, using my "mind reading skills" (well actually they're just logical, deductive, and analytic approaches with a touch of human psychology and n00b-behavior-predicting voodoo magic), i will reason as follows:
seeing as how BOTH of you are junior members and how BOTH of you mention experiencing the issue with THREE ROMs, i suspect you must have coincidently tried the top three most popular WM6.5 ROMs, which would be TPC's, abusalsa's PDA Corner, and one other.
THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH NEARLY EVERY WM6.5 ROM! it is mentioned in the FAQs on the first page pertaining to each of the popular WM6.5 ROMs for the kaiser. the workaround/solution is mentioned in the FAQ!
the above "flame" is based solely on the assumption that you both tried WM6.5 ROMs without reading/following the suggestions in the FAQs. if you have indeed tried the magical step in the FAQ that should fix this problem but yet the problem remains, then i'm sorry about the unnecessary flame and i hope you find the solution to your problem.
Even though the TPC ROM says it's worked out, install the factory ROM first. That fixed the problem for me. Sorry, but I think this is valid only because TPC states quite clearly that they think they sorted out this problem on their thread.

[Q] HTC Pure hard reset

Hello All,
I am using un-contract HTC Pure windows 6.5 phone in india. Now I am facing some issue with my mobile so I want to hard reset my phone. But I am worried about one thing is, do I need to unlock my phone again after hard resetting mobile ?
I have unlock code which is given to me by AT&T at the time of purchasing this mobile.
Hard reset
Hard reset will restore everything of the operating system in its factory issue so you will loose your datas and configuration yes.
Hi
I am new to this forum.
I bought HTC diamond 2 recently. It is my first smartphone, so I am a little nooby with it. Anyway, it has the stock windows 6.1 installed. So, I may go off topic, but I wanted to ask:
1 - If I am about to upgrade my phone to WM6.5, will my warranty still be working with another OS than the stock one?
2 - If I install (or flash or whatever you call it) my phone to WM6.5 and then perform the hard reset (push the reset button on the back of th phone), will the phone run wm6.5 or the stock wm6.1 after the reset?
I hope you understood the questions, sorry for my wretched grammar.
If you install an official WM6.5 ROM from HTC you won't loose warranty (I guess)
A hard reset will reset your phone to the factory settings of the latest flashed ROM. So if you flash a 6.5 ROM and do a hard reset your phone will still be on that 6.5 ROM.
Attention: pushing the reset button is not a hard reset - it's a soft reset
And a soft reset won't kill your data or configuration
So, what exactly does the soft reset and hard reset? Where is the difference? And how do I perform the hard reset then?
hard reset:
RTFM or this: http://digital.uwants.com/viewthread.php?tid=8061717
there also is an option in WinMo to do a hard reset, but I cannot tell you how to navigate there in a non-german version
