Does Google's new fastflip work on your hero? - Hero, G2 Touch Themes and Apps

I just saw Google's fastflip announcement and gave it a try. On my Hero, the webpage does not look right. That is, I don't get the icons at the bottom (left arrow, right arrow, + sign) as you can see in the screen shots at http://fastflip.googlelabs.com/mobile
Can someone check and see if their Hero does the same thing?

I think Google is now so big that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Look at our crummy Maps support, no Google Earth, and now no Flip.

I didnt see the icons at the bottom either, but it worked using gestures (swipe left or right to 'flip' )

i can't imagine you would see the icons at the bottom as those are put there by the iphone browser.....you don't have one of those silly things do you???
and as for the rest, seems fine to me.

Nahh, if you look at the screen shots those buttons at the bottom are part of fastflip. Not the ones you get after pressing the menu button. On my screen, they are not there. The space is blank white. No big deal, just want to know if others are seeing the same thing.

Hi,
only icons I can see are the same as in this picture iPhone icons picture so I think they are iPhone specific

Sorry clobber but that blue bar is, as has already been said, Iphone browser only.
They are the back, forward, new window, bookmarks and switch window buttons from the iphone browser. you will not see them on an android phone.
shudder...i need to go wash my mouth out after mentioning that thing....!

Haha. Fair call. I didn't even notice there were suppose to be buttons. I just instinctively swiped to change pages since that is the paradigm used through out the phone.
I hate buttons on screens for navigation. Totally pointless. It is a pity that Google couldn't display the whole article straight away. Although you get the gist of that article after the first few paragraphs anyway and it's not hard to browse to the original article.
I like it...but don't know how it fits with Reader which I get my new via RSS. I guess Flip filters it down to only the good/popular stuff.

[REF]Capacitive touchpad apps

Since there IS a topic about using the G-sensor, I guess it is a good idea to come up with a thread about using the capacative touchpad of the diamond.
Since the test-tools were out, we saw that the left and right part of the centre-button is a multi-touch enabled touchpad.
It could be used in so many ways, for gestures, extra 'hardware' keys, etc. That's the reason for this topic.
Hey, I reverse engineered the Nav wheel. It may be multitouch, but the raw data I get back from the Diamond does not indicate that it is. The only data I was able to retrieve is rotations per second. I also have not figured out how to reverse engineer the center button.

Good idea ! I was thinking about starting such topic..
What about a unlocker ? If you slide your finger from Home key to the Answer key and at the same time you slide your other finger from the Back key to the Don't Answer key ? Could be nice.. just an idea!
What I have seen, that is quite hard, since above and below the nav-pad is no touch-pad. It sees it as 'nav-pad action' then.
I thought of navigating in another way.
What multitouch-applications do there exist, and are any of them usable for the limited space we have besides the nav-wheel?
It DOES give 4 extra 'hardware' keys. Even key-combinations can be made
Maybe some genious will find a slick way of text-inputting via the 2 pads !
Just give it a small kick upwards
Dont let this topic die?
I was just looking at this for a bit, think I get some clues about how to get the data. I have a time-problem, though Will probably be a while before I pick it up again.
However, I think I saw Schaps mention he is using it in his new touchxperience UI, that'd mean he knows how to do it. Why not just ask him?
I can see one use already. Capacitive sensors are more responsive than resistive screens, so it would be cool to use this in place of touching the screen to scroll through touchflo3d tabs.

Does any one know if this is implemented in the touch pro? and if so, in what way? Maybe we will inherit whatever the pro has to offer in this regard.
YESSSS!
This is awsome!
Did you guyzz see the vid vid?
Unlocking the Diamond with no Hard button touch at alll?.

Nice, looking forward to a nice task manager and launcher mouse pad thing in the future!
A mouse like on the Samsung Omnia would be a good idea.

Not really multitouch
OK, I've download the NavDBG tool and played with it... strictly speaking this isn't multitouch, or not multitouch in the way that the apple looks at it. It's single touch but split into 3 areas. Basically imagine the button area at the bottom of the diamond is split into 3 columns.
You have 3 single touch areas:
1) On the left with the home and dial buttons
2) In the middle tracking outside the circle or also detecting a touch (not a button press) inside the circle. If you finger touches both outside and inside the circle, outside the circle takes precedence
3) On the right with the back and hangup buttons.
The multitouch impression comes from the fact that all 3 of these single touch areas can be used simultaneously.
This doesn't in my opinion open up brilliant options in terms of pinch to shrink spread to enlarge ala apple, but it does mean that a device fairly limited in terms of buttons could get a lot of good enhancements to useability.
My biggest annoyance with the device is when you are trying to gesture in TF3D or in an app (eg scrolling in opera) and it decides you've tapped mid gesture and follows a link etc, using the louch sensitive lower areas for gestures would eliminate this problem and make for a much better user experience (in my opinion).
Also, for games, the potential to use the touch sensitive lower area for a range of game controls would be great.
So all good stuff, but not strictly speaking multitouch.
edit: Additionally it seems to only see a narrow horizontal band in the middle (wheel) section. Interestingly it seems to register about 1cm on each side of the wheel and inside the button, it seems to infer rotation around the wheel based on the finger movements as it crosses these areas.

Seeing how small the pad area it, this would still work, just with fingers on different sensitive areas. If fact, this sounds like a perfect first implementation - zooming in Opera Mobile (although a bit senseless since the scroll wheel works with one hand while pinching will need two).

i think the biggest advantage of this revelation will the benefit of some new added buttons. I can think of a few uses for them too.
left/right touch to
move fwd/back through tabs in opera
skip fwd/back tracks in music player
pounding the hell out of when playing daily thompsons decathalon (if anyone remembers that great 80's game)
I remember reading somewhere that someone is preparing a SDK for this. I think it's very important since we have almost no programmable keys. This can be used as extra keys. Any news on this front?

I would love to see this!
My full on support.
I was thinking of using the touchpanels for a mousepointer control!
I know, when browsing opera, my fingers are too fat to click small links.
Must keep zooming.
I wonder if it was possible to pop up a mouse cursor, and move it with one small touch-panel. The other panel for left and rightclicks.
I have held my diamond with that idea, and I think it is very useful and finger-friendly!
CapacitiveFingerLock
I did make a Proof of Concept of CapacativeFingerLock. This one gives another possibility of locking/unlocking the Touch Diamond or Touch Pro.

GDE 0.1 available in the market

Not going to spam the sapphire forum, but because i mainly live in the G1 area I would like you all to know that I have developed a whole new Home Replacement called GDE. It has transitions like a cube, configurable toolbar buttons etc etc.
A link to the G1 thread ( with all features and some movies ) so i dont have to copy all of it over and over:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4698010#post4698010
I have tested this on a G1 and a G2, but it should also run great on a Sapphire. If anyone has tried it please let me know how it works on your devices!
Downloaded to my mytouch and so far i'm liking it.
Couple of suggestions
1. For the option on the launch bar to bring up the phone, can you make it bring up the dialer and not the recent call list? kinda like the Hero
2. Now, when you press the menu button, the app tray pops up. I'd prefer if the normal menu would pop up. The one that has the option to change wallpaper, notifications, etc.
3. if there is a way, when trashing an icon, to make the whole bottom bar the trash, not just the bottom left corner.
4. the possibility to skin the launcher. (edit: i see in the original post that you said your working on this)
bugs i've noticed:
-when # of visible screens is set to 3 and default desktop is set to 1, you can not scroll all the way through. if you swipe right or left one time thats all that you can do. it doesn't allow you to swipe again to get to the home screen. edit: i forgot to mention that its when its in stretch mode and it doesn't work on any configuration (ie default desktop 1,2,etc). it works fine on cube
-when changing an option that require the restart of the launcher, it pops up the last used application such as sms or gmail.
thanks
Thanks for your input,

That indeed could be something to look at... i will look into it
2. Now, when you press the menu button, the app tray pops up. I'd prefer if the normal menu would pop up. The one that has the option to change wallpaper, notifications, etc.
The hard-menu button will be configurable in the near future, so you can set it to open up any menu you like i.e. settings... The control panel is going to get a lot bigger so it should allow you to do "almost" all things you were able to do in the past... and some more of course
3. if there is a way, when trashing an icon, to make the whole bottom bar the trash, not just the bottom left corner.
Well when you drag the right button will change into the trash... The left button is also context sensitive and in the future this will bring up a settings menu in which you can uninstall the app etc etc. I will give the icon the original red corner because the hit area isnt as clear this way ( its much bigger then you will think )
4. the possibility to skin the launcher. (edit: i see in the original post that you said your working on this)

The other transitions dont have endless scroll "yet"... I am working on implementing this into stretch and fade. The original transition can never support this, because of some technical reasons.
-when changing an option that require the restart of the launcher, it pops up the last used application such as sms or gmail.
thanks
I will see if i can make it so that it comes back to life again... it now forcefully kills GDE to clear out everything

Once again thanks for your input... this is what hopefully will make it the better home replacement.. If you ever come up with ideas, notice bugs or whatever dont hesitate to contact me
One thing i forgot to ask... Can you tell me how the transition speed is on a sapphire? I havent had a chance to run it on one... for now only the G1 and the G2.
On the G2 the cube transition is really fluid... So i hope it will also be on the Sapphire as they are the same hardware/memory wise if im not mistaking.
There are two versions of the Sapphire, one with 32B and one with 32A board. All Google/Vodafone/TIM/Provider branded sapphires are the 32B versions... which has ~182MB RAM, all sapphires with a HTC logo at the front are 32A and have ~290 MB RAM...
So your statement was partly correct
Loving the looks of your launcher by the way, reminds me of LG phones though ^^.
Ok thanks for the clarification and for loving the looks of course
I must be honest... I have never had an LG phone nor seen the interface.. So if it does im a good copycat without knowing ..
it seems pretty smooth. there is a little lag intermittently but not horrible. To get a good comparison I would need to have another phone to compare it too. But so far I'm liking it.
A thing I would like to see is a dock of 4 customisable icons (like the iPhone has yes...) and a shortcut on a different place to pull up the menu The 4x4 crap stucks :/ the 3 buttons take up too much space... I want my own icons there
I downloaded ur app btw because it has so much potential

By rights if it's fluid on the G1 it should be on the Sapphire as they're so similar. I've tested tried it out on my 32B and the 'stretch' and 'fade' effects are as smooth as silk, though 'cube' is alittle clunky even with the CPU at 528.
I'll throw in an iddy-biddy suggestion/request; could we get a configurable bottom-bar in a future build? I'd love to may it a bit darker or semi-transparent. Either way, no biggy.
Overall this is a killer Home replacement, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it mature. A big thank-you to you, Rogro.
Additional: Scrolling through the applications list is really choppy in both grid and list.
Thanks for the reply.
I will look into the grid/listview on my phone the listview is smooth although the grid suffers some lag. its related to the transparancy, but i will fix it asap.
About the configurable toolbar... I am working out the whole theming support, so hopefully soon you will be able to adjust it to anything you want it to be.
Thank you Rogro82 !
i made a video ( 0.1.1 ) to show all transitions and some options.

How to set Home Screen?

Hi:
I am brand new to Captivate (from a Tilt 2), so am exploring Android. So far I am in love with it.
I have searched, and can't seem to find how to set the Home screen. What I mean is, I found how to edit screens (add, remove). But, for some reason the Home button always takes me to the screen farthest to the right. I would like for it to take me to the center screen. How do I do this?
Thanks!
I think on TouchWiz, if you only have 3 homescreens created, the default will be the one on the far right. If you create more homescreens (say 7), it will be the one in the middle. Try adding more homescreens to the right of the one that is defaulted for you right now. Then once you get the one in middle as your default, you can delete the ones to the far left and right if you don't want all 7 screens. Hope this makes sense.
The default is the one with the little home icon at the bottom. You can put it anywhere
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
Hi:
WD33- Thanks so much. I tried that. I have added and subtracted a million screens, but there seems to be no rhyme or or reason (sometimes it's the farthest one to the left, sometimes it's the second to last etc), and I can't seem to get the middle one as home.
Dani:
Thanks for your reply. I don't see the little home icon. You do mean in the edit screen to edit tabs, right?
Thanks again to both of you!
EDIT: Well, after much trial and error, I had to go back to the original 7 screen layout in order to get the center screen to be home.

My new site... I want ur thoughts & suggestions

Its a site for my fathers and my firm... Nothing fancy, just informative... Today I added it to Google Maps, hope it will show tomorrow! And thats it... Tell me what u think and ur suggestions on what to add...
Oh, for the first page I am gonna get more text...
http://www.lan.rs/
Sparse but looks like a good start. I like the color scheme.
Three suggestions:
The picture of the computers on the lower left, the OCD in me wonders why they aren't lined up straight.
The links along the very top of the page and the Google search box below the language selection buttons don't convert to english along with the rest of the page. I can guess what they mean but if you're trying to service english speaking customers those should translate also.
The links below the Google search box (twitter, facebook, etc) are cut in half, try making those buttons fully visible.
@nebenezer:
1. Don't know why they arent aligned... xD
2. I'll correct that...
3. They do come up when you hover ur cursor over them, not all the way, but you can see what they are...
Very nice color scheme
My only input would be the monitors being aligned as nebenezer has already said. Other then that, nice and simple.
@MacaronyMax: Thx
English buttons added!
Any thoughts on what picture I should put instead of those monitors?
I did a little redesigning... Darkened it up a bit, added more text to first page and reference page, added a patterned background, added a all rights reserved bar... hope you like it
Nice site...Well like your idea of that mouse hover over the half-hidden FB,Twitter etc buttons..!!!
Nice!
Thank you...
I like what you are trying to do, but the tabs where it shows twitter, gmail, facebook, etc, are hidden under the photo of the ethernet ports, at least that's the case for me. Seems very minimal and if it was me I would add some photos of the owner, or people doing the job; just to make it a tad more personal.
Edit: I see that the hidden tabs was a design option you chose, and that is nice but I honestly didn't even notice thm at first. Just some constructive criticism: move them up just a little bit more

Any trick to get pen window to work easily?

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I have a heck of a time swiping from the top corner to reduce an app into pen window. Try it in chrome and see what you get.
I either end up pulling the notification shade or swiping tabs. After 10 tries I might get the window. what am missing?
If your talking about pop up window I was having the same problem, here's what you do.. Swipe the corner of either the right or left side down but go ABOVE the screen a little start from the bezel where there's no screen and you should get it every time.. Hope this helps
Yeah that's it. Sorry, they used to call it pen window on note 3.
I'm still struggling with it.
Lol im opposite of you. They get swype too easily!....though I wonder if screen sensitivity increase have anything to do with it
It also doesn't work on everything.. No homescreen, you have to be on the browser or other applications for it to work..
Pen window was a different thing all. Together where you would draw a little box with the pen and a few applications would come up, this you don't need to use the pen for it to work, so if you're using the pen it might make it harder try what I said using your finger and see if it helps..
I'm not using the pen at all. I just tried it a bunch of times and I get better results (not 100% but much better) if I swipe quicker and from the corner of the PHONE, not the corner of the screen. Just about what Melissa recommended. But for me speed seems to factor in too.
Good I'm glad it's working better for ya! ?
Try near very corner, where it says PM/AM ...starting from the status bar...pull down past the bar, then i towards the center. You'll notice that if you go straight down the shade won't move.
That's usually where I reach to pull the shade down and kept wondering why it wouldn't come down the first time I try it.
are there any videos or picture tutorials of this? I'm really having problems. Granted this is my first Note device, but I haven't ever gotten it to work even one time.

It really is as easy as it sounds. Put your index finger over the front facing camera in the upper right corner of the phone then slide your finger diagonally across the screen towards the bottom left. Works for me every time as long as the app support it. Not all apps work so make sure you are using a supported multi-window app.

Yeah, there are 'dead' zones on both ends of the status bar. After you pull down from the dead zone, just swipe towards the center. You can actually pull down about 1/2 inch and it will still work.
I'm very embarrassed to report back, but I had never turned on "Multi-Window." Perhaps my noobiness will help someone else!
Thanks to all those who offered help!
