Beta testing ROM's for the Se Xperia - XPERIA X1 ROM Development

Having been following various threads on this forum for a few weeks now I have noticed an increase in the number of users claiming the cooks have created faulty/buggy ROM's and also an increase in the number of cooks suggesting that these faults/bugs would be a lot less common if quality beta testers were available to assist.
So, in the spirit of trying to appease users whilst assisting the cooks; I would like to ask everyone to submit ideas for a 'standard' process for beta testers to follow. Something that covers the basics whilst checking for the stuff that often gets missed.
I'm hoping to collate all the data that gets posted here into a solid guide which can be used by people like me who want to help (and have the time), but don't know where to start.
Looking forward to your posts;

I also would like to help but I don't know how...

One thing you can do is to test all the different connection types (BT, WiFi, ActiveSync etc.). Often these can make a problem in new ROMs.

Testing , Testing & Testing
Probably can be categorized (shooting from the hip) This can be refined as everyone sees fit:
1.) Functional Testing
Make a phone call. Receive a phone call.
Send & Receive Text Message.
Configure & send email.
Connect wifi surf internet. Connect internet w/o wifi.
Connect to a device using bluetooth.
Change background and/or theme.
Ensure battery drainage is 'reasonable' considering what you're doing..<subjective>
Ensure restore of a back up such as Pim Backup works.
2.) Usability & End to End Testing
Turn on phone and use apps installed.
Is device finger friendly.
Is navigation of device user-friendly?
Are graphics in tact and nice on the eyes?
Is performance reasonable? <relative to stock rom>

New XDA Stellar Handset = Problems

Ok i just bought a new XDA Stellar Handset yesterday and i have encountered some problems, which may be due to my lack of knowledge for smart phones like this one. And here are my problems:
1) My contacts on my sim and my main contacts list is merged and i have doubles of every contact
2) When i use Microsoft active sync it always encounters a problem with the support code:85010014
3) From time to time my device will not access internet even though i am connected using WiFi and i have a connection showing on the settings for both Wifi and WLAN.
Please help me if you can. This is literally the first time ive used this kind of device and im worried that i may have made the wrong choice but with your help maybe i will think otherwise
Well, since your new, you need some tools. Best tool
1) Use AdvancedConfig to correct this.
2) Try this
3) I've never had this issue before, so I don't know. But search for it and you'll find the answer.
Hope it helped.
3) happens to me on some routers........goes away when i change the wifi power level to best performance
To: grandpereza
Thanks, im trying to act on number 2, but for number 1 how do i access the advance control??
To: XtreMe_G
Thanks its working at the moment but when it goes down ill try your idea
I'm not going to give you the link to it, however I'll point you in the right direction. Self reliance is an important thing. I'm not trying to be a ****, but it will save you from being chastised later.
Search for AdvancedConfigusing the google link in my earlier post.

New real-time GPS tracking software, BikeTrack Mobile

Somewhat oriented towards cycling, but can be used for walking or driving, this software grabs coordinates from the built-in (or external) bluetooth device and uploads the data to a website in real time. I believe you can also view the current location real time, or the current route, or previous routes! It has a website that you register a user/pass with which also goes into the program for uploading. When you want to view your routes, you go to a slightly different place on the same server and it appears to use Google Maps to overlay the information.
It also has the option to store the data and upload it later.
I've just experimented with it a little, but so far it's quite cool. I see some other related software to this discussed around here, so figured some folks might be interested.
I have found one bug which I'm going to report.. If the data connection gets severed it seems to get confused and can't re-start tracking, then it crashed on me, but no biggie, just started it back up.
I think I'll also make a suggestion for log frequency.. Right now I think it's logging per GPS frequency (1 per second) but for slower moving transportation or for potential battery/data savings, I think it could easily be changed to higher values, such as 1 data point in 5, 10, 15s etc..
Check it out, http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-biketrack-v0-81.html
BTW, no affiliation with the author, just found the SW yesterday and think it's rather cool.

So does this and it works better http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=340667
this might work better for you
http://free.3dtracking.net/
or the even better solution..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=386477
I was going to check out the TrackMe solution but it required .net 3.5 and I didn't want to get into that, as I've heard that can break other software that's written for 2.0.
The other two programs I'll check out, thanks!
Thanks for you email (i will reply to that lateron) and for this thread on the forum, I already had one here! It really was a couple of days college assignment (well the idea was mine, but we had to do something with mobile devices) which I updated so it was usable for multiple users!

Doh, I just searched the Kaiser subforum.
Couple days? Nice! I'd love to see what happens with a couple more days!

Installed and Uninstalled "WeFI" and now my WiFi won't auto connect.

Hello Everyone.
I'm new to the forum and this is my first post, although have been reading and applying a lot of knowledge you guys have! the forum is great!
Anyway, I have an unlocked HTC TyTN II, everything worked fine and I overall very satisfied with the device...
I made a foolish thing! I installed the "Wefi" utility and after playing with it for a little while, I didn't like the thing.. so, I decided to uninstall it.. however, now I find that my kaiser cannot longer connect automatically to my wireless networks after resume.. Now I only get the notification that it has found available wireless networks and, even though I chose not to show the message anymore, it does it every time, and when it does not, the phone doesn't connect to my WiFi.. so I need to do it manually... which is very annoying..
I already restored original registry keys under HLM\Comm\TNETW12511\Parms with no luck so far...
What can I do?... I'm still on the original WM 6.0, have not loaded any ROM changes yet..
Your help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks!
Oscar
Fix for auto connect problem after removing WeFi
My name is Galia Finkelstein and I work at the support desk at WeFi. This doesn't happen anymore on the new version that's been released so for the older version we have a version fix for the problem with the automatic connection, just run this file and you should be good to go http://wefi.com/static/RestoreZCAutoConnect.exe
If I can assist with anything else please drop me a line at [email protected].
WeFi post-uninstall problems
Hi!
I am sufferring from the same problems as "obadillo" - see above.
I downloaded and installed the latest version of WeFi, but after a couple of days of use, I found that I didn't like it, and it also took up too much of my valuable "today" screen space.
After uninstalling, I found that firstly, all my previous wi-fi settings had been lost (WEP keys for my home network, my work network etc etc), and secondly, even after re-enterring these details, my device (HTC Touch UK Version - Orange UK) - (running WM6 Pro) refused to auto-connect when I switch the WiFi on.
After reading the reply from Galia (directly above my post), I downloaded and ran the executable, but found that it made no difference.
Any ideas anyone? I did email Wefi's support email address, but as yet have received no reply.
Thanks in advance!
I have also tried this fix with no success (running WM5). I have also sent an email to wefi support. No response. I would recommend you stay away from this software.
We-Fi Latest Version
I have found a (kind of) solution! I have installed the latest version of We-Fi (downloaded from their website), and then DEselected it in my Today programs. So even though its not in use, its wifi parameters still overrule the PPCs local params. This seems to allow me to switch on and off WiFi WITHOUT using the WeFi software, and it now autoconnects, even with the several wireless networks I have stored, whenever I switch WiFi on, it may take a few seconds to connect, but it now does every time.
Not the greatest "solution", but at least the problem is partially solved.
But as the good man above says, unless you're VERY sure you want to install WeFi, do not install, because you will lose ALL preexisiting WiFi connections and settings etc..
Have a good one!
-=namwollem=-
Hello again, XDA devs!
I also had the problem and I'm struggling with Amir, some guy from the WeFi staff, to get the problem solved or at least recognized.
I left a complete description on my blog with links to people having problems. Here's the article (without links):
Before you consider installing WeFi on your Windows Mobile device, you might want to read this cautiously and save yourself some problems.
If you have not yet tried it, you're not missing much. Although promising, the app takes over your device. It controls your today screen, messes up your wi-fi parameters and some rarer stability issues were also reported.
First, the app needs .Net CF v.2.0, something that takes space and puts more useless crap on your device. Then the app doesn't just find networks and connect to them. Instead it overrides your wi-fi parameters and inserts its own code, thus the uninstallation problems. WeFi also takes a lot of your today screen's estate for basically nothing. How much screen space? Take a look.
Upon uninstalling it, many noticed their devices stopped automatically connecting to wireless networks, among other, rarer problems. The only known fix to the problem is to hard-reset your device and to stay the **** away from this app. We also saw a link to a .exe file somewhere but no one left feedback about it so we assume it's just as good as WeFi. You might also reinstall it, hide it and use it to take care of the wi-fi stuff or go in Settings>Connections>Wi-Fi everytime to select a network to connect to.
The developers were quick to comment about the problem and said they are working on it (see the first comment to this post). However their product page doesn't mention the problem yet and people still get caught. I left them feedback about *some* of the concerned device, assuming it's not all of them, hoping for a change. Feel free to do the same and put some pressure on these guys too.
You might also read one of those threads and see for yourself.

I'm trying to get the warning to reach all the download spots, if you guys feel like helping. This is just unacceptable, let's do something about it!
Haim head of WeFi Windows Mobile development team here
Hello all,
First, let me assure you all that we are doing our best to solve any user problem as quickly as possible.
Out of the thousands of mobile users we have, there are really only a few users who complained about this problem.
We released a fix that you can find in: http://www.wefi.com/download/client/RestoreZCAutoConnect.exe
which after executing and doing soft reset should solve the problem.
As our support team explained to “primemaps” via e-mails (sent in 08/07) this fix only works if you uninstall WeFi first.
What you are all describing is that ZeroConfig stopped auto connecting.
By avoiding the manipulation of ZeroConfig default timeouts in our next version (which should be released in about 2 weeks from now), this should not happen anymore.
If this does not help you or you have encountered any other problem – please send me an email to [email protected] and I promise a fast response,
it would help if you mentioned your WeFi version, Device model and ActiveSync version.
I hope you would all choose to install our next version and enjoy the many benefits it can bring you.
Haim
Can't work with it and can't work without it
With my HTC TyTN II I had similar problems as others have described, or maybe even worse: I could no longer work to any wireless networks. It would disconnect in less than one second every time.
I did a hard reset and that didn't work!
I also tried the "fix" the WeFi representative suggested but that didn't help at all either.
What finally helped me was Namwollem's solution: Install WeFi again and removed it from the Today screen (but kept it installed).
I can't help wonder if WeFi changes something in the ROM since a hard reset didn't even fix it.
One of these days I will have to install the ROM all over and see if it makes a difference, but I wish I could avoid that!
I hope others won't be stupid like me and install this #$%[email protected]#&$ software!
Nothing helps for my Diamond to restore Wifi signal
I have Htc diamond with newest Rom downloaded from htc.com.
My problem is that since i installed aplication WEFI(older version) and uninstalled it, i cannot see ANY available wifi networks.. I tried alot of things. I tried soft reset, hard reset, i installed WEFI (newest version) , in moments wifi works and shows available networks and i can connect, but after it doesnt work again.. I would say it shows networks only ocasionally(even if im always surrounded by at least 10 hotspots). I installed newest Rom again, i installed old official ROM, i always put mamximum performance instead of battery, and still i have no results/cannot see ANY available networks). I have a feeling like i really have a hardware problem with wifi now..But again i think whatever it is its caused by this aplication WEFI. Does anylone have any ideas? i saw some Rafael radio ROM , maybe i can try to install that?
Thanks
AArrrggghh!
This god-awful program rears its ugly head again! I have solved the problem totally now by getting a new handset!! Now I have my Touch HD (Blackstone), one thing I WILL NOT do is install this garbage!! A quick search thru the forums here will reveal a small and very useful program which will with one click switch-on WiFi (and auto connect to the signal it finds if stored in your preferred networks) and with another click will switch WiFi off! Its called AKWifiToggle, and while no where near as fancy as WeFi, IT WORKS and DOESN'T MUCK UP YOUR PHONE!!!

Connection questions (again...sorry)

Hi there,
Since last week I also have a TD2. It's a Vodafone-branded TD2 from NL. I've read a lot here about the dataconnections, but I think that I still don't know how I have to configure it for my purposes. What I would like:
1. When there is a known wifi (i.e. @home of @work), I'd like to have the TD2 connected to that wifi, instead of the payed (and slower) connection. How can I configure this?
2. I would like to have my email checked every 5 minutes. What I understood from reading here, it should be possible that the dataconnection closes after the check, and reconnects when the mail should be checked again (I hope I understood it right). This should improve batterylife. Is it true and how do I configure this?
3. I would like to have a notification (sound) when a new mail arrives, but not when I'm sleeping. Is there a simple tool that gives automatically a silent notification (so no sound and no vibration) from i.e. 22.00h until 7.00h? The phone/sms should NOT be silent then (since it could be an emergency-call). Of course all could be silent in a simple way when I want to, just like now.
I hope that any of you can help me configure this since I've read too much I think; I don't get it anymore....Thanx in advance!
Regarding point 2, why do you want to close the data channel every time? If it's not being used it shouldn't affect battery life. It might even make battery life worse if every five minutes you request another ip address and internet connectivity. Not to mention giving your network a hard time!
I understood that a non-closed data connection uses battery power. But if it isn't, it makes it a lot easier.

[Q] ARP Spoofing/Poisoning issue on CM builds

I've done quite a bit of searching, to no avail, but I am having an issue I'd like to find a resolution to, or at the very least, find the culprit. I've been testing some CM10.x builds (not from a single dev, from many) for my Vivid for a few weeks now, and I am constantly detecting ARP Spoof attacks/ARP poison/Man-in-the-middle attacks. It doesn't matter what ROM, if its CM based, it's been happening consistently. I realize the simple fix is to not use those ROMs, how ever I am worried for others out there, and not just my own personal discomfort. So, I am calling for a meeting of minds. Is anyone else aware of this type of issue? Is this an exploit embedded in the ROM, an apk (inspected them and turned up nothing so far), a foothold stored on the SD card, or something else I've not covered? Any information and or assistance will be greatly appreciated. And hopefully, not only by me. I have loads of faith in the devs and mods on here and only with to help. Thanks in advance!

What security suite (that you really don't need) is throwing the warnings?
Sent from my Vivid 4G using Tapatalk 4
DNS logs initially, doing it old school. But then I tried DroidSheepGuard on the device for faster notifications. Also tried WiFi Protector. They both have their positives and negatives. But good ol' DNS logs and event viewers never fail me there. Each time, it traces back to my device with the CM10.x ROM. I work in the IT industry, so security is a big part of my daily routine. However, mistakes get made, being human and all. I know there are lots of network test abilities in CM that are great for testing vulnerabilities. But those tools, as I'm sure you know, can be used for nefarious purposes. And with Byod becoming more and more popular, I'd hate to see people or companies fall prey to these attacks (or tests gone awry?). I mean I know to secure my DNS servers, and vlan or segregate wifi networks. Anyway, thanks for the quick response!

Well, the poisoning was bad enough to take down a test exchange 2007 sp2 server, though it was more of a redirection of packets than an actual crash. So, it does concern me. Unfortunately I did get a positive for poisoning when I was running your rootbox, (slick rom, loved it btw) but I later discovered I forgot to clear the DNS cache while running it. So I can't be 100% on whether it was from rootbox, or if it was just already poisoned with the vivid's wifi mac as the destination for the spoofed mac address. I can run another round of tests when I work slows down again.

Indeed sir. As soon as I discovered the poisoning, full wipes and fresh OOB loads. Just need to rerun 2 tests I missed clearing my DNS cache for. I've also done a bit of reading, and apparently there is a security hole in JB that allows this ARP Spoofing/poisoning. From what I can tell, it looks like inadvertent poisoning, like a testing app is running a muck. More testing needed though. I was hoping someone might know the background services associated with the network testing features that come on CM builds. I would like to disable them and see how it goes in my next round of tests.
P.S. Cant wait to test other of yours as well. Rootbox would be killer for my daily driver, just need that mobile data. So if you have any newer builds with possible fixes that need testing, I'd love to give it a whirl. When I edited the APNs I was able to get the mobile data to connect for a moment, but it dropped almost immediately.

It was a pain just to get rootbox built... So fixing it will probably be even harder especially since right now I am not currently deving until I get my new computer
