DUN / Dial-Up Networking TomTom Rider - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My reason for rooting this G1 was solely to be able to connect it to my TomTom Rider GPS system via Bluetooth, so that unit can download traffic updates via GRPS/3G.
Rooting was successful, and i'm able to start the Tethering client with su privileges and bluetooth mode on.
However, when i try to sync it with TomTom, i get a bluetooth profile scan result that says "DUN" is not an available profile there for it wont even ATTEMPT to use it to connect.
stab in the dark here but does DUN mean Dial-Up Networking?
What can i do to this rooted G1 to make it report that it has the DUN bluetooth profile, and hopefuly let the devices cnonected to it use the GPRS/3G ?

Bluetooth Network

I understand that it is technically posible to establish a link between the phone and a computer with Bluetooth such that you can the access the internet using the computers access.
I have had a few shots at this, and have got the correct profile appearing as an outgoing connection and established - but I cannot for love nor money make the bugger do anything.
I'm using XP pro, I have tried with and without the bridge between the local and bluetooth connection on the machine - still nothing.
When I have the connection established and go to the Wireless Manager there are no entries in the Bluetooth drop down, should there be?
Any ideas anyone?
Tom
If you are just wanting to access the internet using bluetooth then the way I did this was to set up a blutooth active sync conection, you can the access the internet from your alpine.

True, lateral thinking, must try it one day!
Of course that would require me to remember to take my cradle to work for the first sync! Set a task in the phone you say, I would if the flamin thing allowed you to set the task alarm at a time of your choice, I'm nearly at work by 8 when it reminds me I've forgotten something again!

Bluetooth PAN and Mac OSX not working

Hi,
I'm trying to use the Bluetooth PAN setting in the Internet Sharing program with a Macbook (Mac OS X 10.5.4). I successfully paired the laptop and Kaiser. I start Internet Sharing on the Kaiser, go to the Bluetooth icon in OSX, click Tilt and click Connect to Network. This doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have suggestions?
I can successfully get it working with Windows XP so I'm guessing it's OSX's fault?
SPL: 3.56 hard
Rom: NotATreoFan's V1 Final (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=421852)
Radio: 1.65.24.36
Might anyone have an idea, or maybe the better question is has anyone ever gotten Bluetooth PAN working with OSX?

It works for me on a mbpro with 10.5.5. It's been a while since I've set it up, but I don't remember doing anything special to get it working.
Make sure you set your shared internet connection to the correct setting ( Media Net or My ISP )
I have found that tethering using MY ISP works the best and seems to have a tad less latency.
I am running a MB Pro C2D with 10.5.3
My "Hack Pro " is running 10.5.2 and is also tethering with no issues.
P.S.
One more thing. Make sure the phone is set to Visible. Although you can pair it , if its not in Visible mode, it will NOT work
Do you get a connection and it just wont give you an active connection or does your laptop attempt to tether and give a network connection error ?
Here's how I'm trying everything. The device and computer are already paired. The device is visible.
Open Internet Sharing.
Set PC Connection to Bluetooth PAN and Network Connection to MEdia Net.
I tap connect, and the status changes to "Device setup finished. On the PC, connect Bluetooth PAN."
On the Macbook, I click the Bluetooth icon on the menu bar, hover over the device's name, and click Connect to Network.
On the device, the status changes to "Connected."
When doing this in Windows, that's it. I can open up a browser, and the internet is working fine. But on my Macbook, I open up a browser, and I'm not connected to anything. I open up the Network preference pane, and nothing is connected. OSX doesn't see the Bluetooth PAN profile is maybe the problem?

Ahhhhh When you pair the phone to the mac, make sure you have internet sharing enabled on the phone before you go into pair mode. Otherwise mac osx doesnt see the PAN capability. I think thats what I had to do.
I tried with Internet Sharing pre-connected, but it still didn't work. I did get it working though! In the network connections, Bluetooth does not equal Bluetooth PAN. I went to the little plus at the bottom, and specifically added a Bluetooth PAN interface, and it picked the device up.
Thanks for all of the help!

Unfortunately, I am on HTC Touch with a WM6.5 ROM, and even though I added the Bluetooth PAN interface manually, my Mac is still not picking up the phone, even though it's been paired successfully and Internet Sharing pre-connected.
OK this is for last year but just in case someone else searches for this a solution I found a while back
Added step open "com port 1" on the WM, not sure where I found that, otherwise the mac keeps "dialing" and the phone says "???? no need to dial, 3G not modem"
These steps work for me on SE Xeperia1 with WM 6.5 and Mac 10.5.8.

"Now with Windows Mobile 6, Bluetooth PAN (Personal Area Network) is used. So, if you are on Mac OS 10.4.9, you now have the ability to use a Network Port called “Bluetooth PAN.” Here are the high-level steps you use to enable your Bluetooth Internet Sharing:
1. Turn on Bluetooth and BT discovery on both your WM6 device and your Mac
2. Set up a Pairing between the two devices
My steps + Setup Bluetooth from Phone to Mac. Do it form the phone to the mac not the other way around.
+ Opem Comm port one from Phone bluetooth setup.
3. Enable the Bluetooth PAN port under your Mac’s Network Preferences (Network Port Configurations) by clicking the checkbox
4. Ensure that your devices are “talking together”
5. Start “Internet Sharing” on your WM6 device and click “Connect”
6. On your Mac, it is helpful having the “Show Bluetooth status in the menu bar” enabled
7. On your Mac, from the Bluetooth menu, select “Join Network on [WM6 device]“
8. That is it! (You should have internet connectivity on your Mac, provided you have good signal on your WM6 device). You can even verify that you got an IP address from your WM6 device by going to Network control panel and selecting Bluetooth PAN. Mine shows a 192.168.0.XXX number.
I hope that works. This is a good tip to know if you travel a lot and don’t want to pay for the expensive hotel internet services. Just plug power into your phone and your laptop, connect and you have “dialup” speeds for no additional costs!
If you have questions, write a comment below. If this works for you, DIGG it!
Don’t forget, you will drain your battery pretty quickly and use a lot of bandwidth from your cellular provider (especially if your internet service has a cap)."

no data/3g when bluetooth is on poss config issue?

when bluetooth is on the connection status says network where it normaly shows 3g (i think refering to the bluetooth pan adapter as its configured for gremote) when i turn off bluetooth the data connection is there straight away and it does not need to connect and all applications work again like opera i.e and the weather tab. but if i turn on bluetooth it times out again and does not connect to anything needing a data connection
anyone know what i need to do to stop the mobile thinking that the network pan conection is defaulted over 3g when bluetooth is on?
can anyone help me please??? its driving me mad!

share internet from pc to android

Hi, I know, probably someone have made the same question but I haven't found anything in the forum.
Is it possible share my internet connection from pc to android via usb or via wifi?
how? thanks
If your PC is on a wired connection with a wireless card you could probably bridge the connection (or just use internet connection sharing if you use windows) and make an ad-hoc network to connect to via wifi.
I have a laptop connected via ethernet... how I can make a ad hoc connection?
I have tried to create one, but the phone don't find anything!!
Nobody can help me ?
You can use Tether WiFi and make your handset as Adhoc access point. This will only work on rooted handsets.
Secondly use something like PdaNetA115 for wired usb connection to use your phone as modem in both cases. Will work with rooted/unrooted.
There is another one which is Tether Bluetooth for rooted phones.

Wrong way, he's trying to use his laptop's connection to get wifi to the phone, not trying to use the phone as a modem. Looking at some other stuff and trying it myself it doesn't look like you can connect the phone to ad hoc. Sorry
and via usb??? is it possible?
maybe with some adb command....
I have used this method on the micro hero 1.3, CyanogenMod v4.1.11.1 and I am just about to set it up on micro hero 1.4.
http://modmygphone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22681
I have read on another site that this line should be added to the very end to change it back to read only
"mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system"
The wifi modem at my G/Fs mothers has no internal PPPoE login and her adsl connection needs a PPPoE login, Android cant do this or I havnt been able to find and app that does.
I use my laptop(with 2 wifi cards, one internal and 1 external(pcmcia)) to do the PPPoE login(internal wifi) on the laptop and then share this connection via ad-hoc(external wifi) to my G1.
One thing that I would like to point out, if I lose the connection between the G1 and the laptop, I have to reboot the laptop to get it to share the internet again.I haven't worked out why yet.
I have ordered a new modem/wifi/router of ebay that will do away with all this crap, but for now it is a work around that does works, until the new modem arrives.
Hi All,
I also am looking for a way to get the phone connected to the internet FROM the PC via USB.
reason:
I have a Corporate SW that connects to WIFI access points around the world for free (at least free to me, not to the company).
this is done through a SW on the PC. now, I cannot mad an AD Hoc connection because the WIFI is already working. and I also cannot connect using the phone wifi due to the same reason..
is there a way to connect the phone to the Internet through the USB cable?
Thanks,
Itamar
Hi,
I just change my HTC HD for the Nexus One and I really need a way to do that, like ActiveSync for WM.
Is there a solution to use the pc connectivity with android using the USB cable ?
many thx
for WiFi sharing, you could try this: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/how_to_turn_your_windows_7_computer_into_a_wireles.php
I'm going to test it this weekend
Maybe this too:

Hi,
HTC Desire natively does not have the ability to see AdHoc connections.
So you will need to do some hacking, good thin this is easy !
Use this link :
forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-755254.html
Unfortunately i don't have enough privileges to post links...so you make it a link
Good luck !
If the PC is connected to Wifi, there is no reason the Android device wouldnt be connected as so aswell.
Is there anyway I can share the internet on my notebook to my Android through USB cable, just like Activesync on WM ?
I can ofcourse use Wifi & connect to the same network my notebook is connected to, but the reason I wanna do this is to save power of the Android device by not using Wifi.
Well, here's a reason.... I fly alot and have a software from my workplace that connects me free to almost any non-free hotspot at airports around the world..
that means I can't use wifi on my device and am already using the wifi interface on my PC to connect to the internet.
which leaves me with a dongling USB cable that cannot pass the internet to my phone..
Bummer
im facing the same problem bec. i use a usb modem and i have only the cable to share the pc net on my android so .........waiting for an idea
share internet from pc to android via wifi
I used below way to share pc's internet via wifi.
Prerequisite
laptop:
Windows XP SP3
WIFI + LAN (access internet via LAN)
Android SDK has been installed.
phone:
HTC Desire with official 2.2 Android
Steps:
1. Rooted the phone with unrevoked3.
Because I can not paste link, Please search relevant threads.
Please notice, select "charge only" when link phone to PC.
Do not unplug phone till unrevoked3 display "done".
2. Set NAT on laptop
Please search relevant threads.
a) Modify Registry Entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
IPEnableRouter=1
In Command Prompt window, run below command:
b) net stop remoteaccess # Stop the RAS Service
c) netsh routing ip nat install
d) netsh routing ip nat add interface "Local Area Connection" full # This interface have internet link
e) netsh routing ip nat add interface "Wireless Network Connection" private # traffic on this interface will be routed.
f) netsh routing ip nat add interface Internal private
g) net start remoteaccess
h) command "netsh routing ip nat show interface" will output
NAT Internal Configuration
---------------------------
Mode : Private Interface
NAT Local Area Connection Configuration
---------------------------
Mode : Address and Port Translation
NAT Wireless Network Connection Configuration
---------------------------
Mode : Private Interface
3. Enable phone's Hot-Spot with default configuration(DHCP enabled).
Configure laptop connect to phone as AP.
So my laptop's WiFi interface will be DHCPed an ip 192.168.1.157
my phone ip is 192.168.1.1
4. Add route and DNS on phone.
a) "adb shell" in command prompt, then "su".
Now you should login as root.
b) run "ip route add default via 192.168.1.157",
So all phone's traffic will be routed to laptop's WiFi interface.
My LAN interface ip is 192.168.15.100.
Just try "ping 192.168.15.100", It should return successful response.
c) Set DNS server, run "setprop net.dns1 192.168.15.1", Get DNS from laptop with command "ipconfig /all".
Not try ping a existed web site. It should return correct response.
Note:
Windows XP can keep NAT configuration after restart. But you should re-run Step 4 after restart phone's hot-spot.
E-Market and Build-in Browser do work. But GMAIL does not work. It seems Gmail check network connection type.
share PC internet with Android over USB
I also need this solution badly... Let's experiment. Anyone got any ideas?
well, here is my thoughts
1) Create VPN server in phone\network, the server address is 127.0.0.1, enable PPTP protocol
2) adb forward tcp:xxxx tcp:1723
The tcp:1723 is phone's PPTP port
3) Setup a VPN server on PC using port xxxx
4) Start VPN connection on phone
Any idea?
Mac to Android via WiFi
I forgot that this requires ad-hoc support :-/
If you have a mac, you can share your wired/wireless connection via WiFi.
1) Open System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing > Enable
2) Join a wireless connection on plug in ethernet
3) Click airport in the menubar, then 'Create Network'.

Bluetooth: Will not connect to Win7 PC

I can pair my Velocity (Telstra Oz Branding still with stock OS) with a Windows 7 32-Bit pc but it will not connect. During installation (& under Device Manager), I get warning that Windows could not find the driver for "Bluetooth Peripheral Device".
I have no issues with pairing or connecting other devices on either the Velocity or the PC - it's just between the Velocity and the PC. I've just come from the HD2 so I'm a newb with this Handset which was fine.
I can on the PC "send a file" to the phone just fine but no PAN or tethering...or are these features not yet part of Andriod 2.3.7 or is there some setting I don't know about?
Thanks
Nathan

Had the same issue with mine.
1. Instal HTC Sync
2. Pair set your phone discoverable.
3. Search for bluetooth devices from your PC.
4. Select your phone.
5. After pairing your mobile go to
Start->Devices and Printers right click on your phone name Properties then Services tab, choose only
Advanced Audio - tick if your bluetooth pc is compatible or leave it blank
EMAIL - leave blank
File Transfer (Obex) - tick
Headset Audio Gateway - tick if your bluetooth pc is compatible or leave it blank
Object Push (Obex) - tick
Remotely Controllable Device - tick if your bluetooth pc is compatible or leave it blank
SMS - leave blank.
Then on your PC right click on Bluetooth icon choose Join Area Network and select your phone.
Hope it will help. This resolved my issue.
But just to let you know My HTC Raider is not able to receive *.apk extension over bluetooth. MP3, jpg perfect.
Mmmm looks like my handset is only advertising that it has EMAIL and SMS as "Services" to the PC. Do you know if I need to install anything on the Handset?
Thanks
Nathan
I don't know what PAN is, or maybe I just dont recognize the acronym, but you should use the wireless hotspot for tethering, much, much, much, faster than BT.
FYI - Straight from Wikipedia:
=============
Bluetooth vs. Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11)
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (the brand name for products using IEEE 802.11 standards) have some similar applications: setting up networks, printing, or transferring files. Wi-Fi is intended as a replacement for cabling for general local area network access in work areas. This category of applications is sometimes called wireless local area networks (WLAN). Bluetooth was intended for portable equipment and its applications. The category of applications is outlined as the wireless personal area network (WPAN). Bluetooth is a replacement for cabling in a variety of personally carried applications in any setting and can also support fixed location applications such as smart energy functionality in the home (thermostats, etc.).
Wi-Fi is a wireless version of a common wired Ethernet network, and requires configuration to set up shared resources, transmit files, and to set up audio links (for example, headsets and hands-free devices). Wi-Fi uses the same radio frequencies as Bluetooth, but with higher power, resulting in higher bit rates and better range from the base station. The nearest equivalents in Bluetooth are the DUN profile, which allows devices to act as modem interfaces, and the PAN profile, which allows for ad-hoc networking.[citation needed]
==================
One benefit of Bluetooth is it chews much less power as the range is limited. I'm guessing the profile is not in 3.2 of Andriod so I'll wait and see what ICS brings.

Hello, have you got installed drivers for your bluetooth dongle? it looks like there is only basic microsoft service/driver automaticly installed. Usualy bluetooth module has got Broadcom chipset. Try to find out what make it is in device manager on your PC. Did you try to pair another handset to your pc? If behaviour is the same on your PC that means you need drivers for your bluetooth module. Check if cd was included with bluetooth when you bought it.
Yeah on my HD2 (WinMo 6.5) I get DUN and PAN (Windows Bluetooth services reports the device supports DUN, SPP, Telephony). On my Tab I get DUN (Windows Bluetooth services reports the device supports DUN). On my Velocity I get sod all (Windows Bluetooth services reports the device supports Email and SMS).
Win Device Mgr reports my BT Radios as Apple Braodcom Built In and the MS Bluetooth Enumerator.
Thanks
Nathan
I usually just tether via wifi and charge it off the usb still, then i can have it plugged up to power but if I need to take a call I can always disconnect it breifly without interuption to the internet... I've never really gotten on well with BT, I always found it cumbersome... that and my main laptop doesnt have BT... so wifi or usb is the only option
