Hi,
could someone answer my question:
I've about 50 Apps on my Hero. It says that there are almost 40 MB free Space on my Hero.
What is faster?
The Apps with Apps2SD on my Transcend Class6 16 GB SD Card (about 9MB speed on WIN7)
or:
The Apps on the phone and no changes?
Your phone memory is always going to be faster than your SD card.
Personally, I've seen no need to use AppsToSD yet, but that may change in the future. My advice would be that as long as you've got plenty of free memory, you may just as well leave them where they are.

Dave

hello,
first: very good page, with a lot of infos and bombastic apps.
but i'm a newbie, i read a lot, but couldn't find a post recommend to my question. also my english isnt very good
my problem: i bought my herald without a memory card. so i installed the apps i found&liked (touchflo, flashlite, kaiserhomeplugin, htc cube clone;total commander;google maps, scitebackup) in the ram of my ppc.
but today i bought a micro sd card. now i would like to move my apps to the card.
questions: can i cut&paste the apps in the folder "programms" to a folder in my card, with the total commender. or isnt this allowed because of the registry or something like that? maybe problem with the .ink files?!
is it better to uninstall all programms. and install them new, this time directly to the sdcard?
thanks for your helps
greetings...
you can try copy paste
just like on pc's some will run others will not
though mind you things like today items and other always
running programs should not be put on the sd card
as they are much slower then storage
thank u
My SD card runs them as fast as the main memory, but I wouldn't install things that are running all the time in it. So, don't install things like the cube on the card. You should uninstall and reinstall the programs into the proper memory storage. It's easier and less problematic that way.
You can move installed programs between MAIN or SD memory using POCKET MECHANIC (http://www.wizcode.com/)
I moved all the tmobile crap (hotspot login, tzones wap, etc..) and anything else I don't want to get rid of, but I never use onto my SD card.
How will we have to wait for a 10 or 12 gb Micro SD Card
ey,
Yesterday I bought de HTC S730.
Memory:
132.29 Mb intern ROM
43.58 Mb intern RAM
Question:
Is this normal for this phone?
They promised:
256 Mb ROM
64 Mb RAM
Ok, wm6 is on it and that will use an amount of ROM.
But I don't understand the amount of RAM, it's too less.
And my phone is already slow derictly after start up (free RAM is about 10Mb.
Should I go back with it or is there a way to speed it up?
Greets,
Niels
With window's and the other app's installed on it that sounds fairly normal. The memory has a leak which is supposedly being fixed by HTC, but with window's and other things actively using the RAM I dont see any fix really boosting it too much, but every little bit helps.
If you are using the default home screen with the weather app and so forth built in your memory on first boot should be around 14 - 16mb free. Then with keeping your memory free you can keep it around 10 - 12 after a week or more of none stop use.
Theres a thread on here that talks about other tweeks you can do to clean things up and have more memory but with carefull monitoring and so forth the phone wont bog down much.
Of course closing an app and then imidiately opening another one will slow things down some...

It's normal. And the phone is usable. BTW.: if you'd try to find out some information about this (or any similar) WM6 smartphone before purchase, you should know.
ok I'm persuaded.
Thank you for the answers.

Your welcome, it is a good phone, and if you dont mind the other backgrounds or what to edit the default one you can open that memory closer to 20 free.
Enjoy
Hello,
I would like someone to clarify to me some things about the device memory. My current mem readings as shown in the Control Panel are:
- Storage: 299.01 MB (210.27MB free)
- Program: 183.73 MB (72.87 free)
According to the official specs, the Topaz has 512 MB ROM and 256 MB RAM. How are these two types of memory related to Storage and Programs? Is there a way to mess between RAM, ROM, Storage and Programs in order to achieve optimum memory usage? For example, in my device there seems to be a lot of free Storage Mem available, as compared to Program Mem... Should I need to do something about this big discrepancy?
I would be grateful if someone clarified all this to me.
To be very short:
ROM (Read Only Memory) is where bootloader and Windows resides:Beside this there is more room to install applications (Programs) and to store personal files such as pictures,videos,mp3,docs etc.(Storage). ROM is non-volatile memory, this means that data will remain in the device even if power is cut off and will be available the next restart.RAM (Random Access Memory) is volatile memory that your device needs for ordinary functioning (loads into it programs that are running).RAM wil be emptied if powered off. It does not have sense to compare these two values and try to make them similar. An advice would be to install and store all you can in the Memory Card.Note: some apps/cabs need necessarily to be installed in the device (Programs memory) otherwise they don't work.Note 2: Access timings to memory cards are higher than internal ROM, take it in consideration if you have to decide where to store/install.
...Well I wasn't so short..I'll try it again:
If someone asked me:""why do I have so little free Program memory compared to Storage memory?"
I'd answer:"It's beause of many useless Microsoft programs embedded into Windows that cannot be uninstalled, only cooks can do it"
Thanks a lot for the (not so short after all! ) reply! So, if I get it correctly, the so called Storage Memory is the ROM after all: In other words, these 210 MB that are free cannot be utilized by me in any way, unless of course, I switch to a cooked ROM that contains lots of programs that currently occupy my RAM, and which they will not be needed to be installed there any more.... However, I am not in the mood of flashing and setting everything up from scratch, right now....
The storage card is indeed a solution, yet it has the two limitations that you correctly mentioned... So, I will basically have to stick with the RAM that is left...
In the same order as your arguments:
-Those 210 MB CAN be used by you, by installing apps in it, but I adviced you to possibly install them in Memory Card unless inevitable.
-Cooked ROMs generally free up Programs Memory area (or maintain same memory and upgrade embedded apps).
-Storage card is simply VITAL,access timings and transfer speeds are good enough to support everyday use.
-Then you talk about RAM: You "have to stick to RAM that is left" as anybody, but RAM usage is variable, depending on how much intensive is your device work in runtime. To optimize RAM memory use CleanRam, you can do it manually or schedule it (like I do)...and of course don't run too many apps at the time (check Task manager)!!

I was talking about these 210 MB, which are reported as free in my Storage memory, which if I understood well is the ROM... So I can't use them to install apps in it.
On the other hand, the Program memory (which I have 73 MB free) is the RAM, right?
Or I've got it all wrong?
210 MB is part of the ROM and it is free space in which you can store personal files (mp3,pictures,videos,contacts,docs etc.)--->same as Memory Card but smaller and quicker. The free memory in which you can install programs is in your case 72.87MB and is still part of the ROM(I want to better check this last statement, update coming soon).
RAM is another memory module, physically separated from ROM,it's another chip. RAM values vary with the device workload.
Update: I confirm,to simplify we can say that both Storage and Programs memory is part of the ROM, in no ways it can be considered as being RAM.
Thanks a lot for all the clarifications, sualc! Now everything has been sorted out to me.
You're welcome,cheers
I have read a lot of info about memory, but somehow i don't seem to grasp the whole concept.
Here is what i understand so far about the internal memory.
part of it is Ram (wm calls is program memory)and the other part is rom (storage memory). Since i have an tp2 I am suppose to have the following Memory ROM: 512 MB RAM: 288 MB. I understand that part of the rom memory is taken bij processes and memory reservation. 1) My question is is the size of the custom cooked rom take from my rom ram or any other place (I mean if i have a bigger rom flashed, will it eat from my rom. or ram or neither? 2) my second question is if i stuff my rom with programs or files will it slow down the performance of my phone?(put in a different form should i install as much programs as possible in my internal memory or should i keep some space free?)
3) does anyone know the read/write speed of my rom memory. since i have a very fast microsd card (sandisk 8gb class 4) I was wondering if it might be close to the same speed or not?
4) if i have a cooked rom with sense, but sense is not running will it still take more program memory?
5) I remember a post that showed how to sync with my micro sd card (my documents of pc and wm) but i can't seem to find it anyone?
thanks in advance!
-some short answers, RAM is where running programs and their data is loaded/stored/executed - so only running programs use it.
Class 4 is very acceptable to exec programs from, I'll try Class6 shortly, never did compare to iunternal memory, but the bottom line is that it's OK to run programs from SDHC.
-remember SDHC gets unmounted if you choose to connect over USB as "disk drive"
Thanks Alcapone,
I have tested a class6 and some class 4 or trenscend, but my sandisk class 4 was much quicker, so i would love to see a class 6 from sandisk but others i would prefer my sandisk class 4.
Let me refrase my questions.
If i flash a lite rom, or a fully stocked rom wil it take away from my availible ram or rom or neither? (not talking about running programs just installed)
And about the post i can't find, if i remember correctly i should be able to active sync, but instead of my documents going to main memory, they would go to my documents on the memory card.
thanks for the quick reply.
[Q] "Cannot save photo - not enough free space" + more than 4GB free on SD card
Hey there,
I was taking some pictures with my phone (HTC TD2, original ROM) the other day and out of the blue an error appeared notifying me that the last photo cannot be saved since there is not enough free space. I double checked the amount of free space available on the SD card (this is where photos are set to be stored) and just to be sure also the internal memory, but both were fine (SD: more than 4GB free, internal memory: ca. 170MB free).
What is this? Some kind of a joke M$ is playing on customers? ;o)
In case anyone knows what can be causing this, please, let me know. Thanks.
nvx
Have you tried changing your sd card? One of my friends had a similar problem and a faulty sd card proved to be the reason.
Dear chacik,
Thanks for your response. Change of SD card helped, however, when I put back the original SD card (from which nothing has been deleted since the error occurred), Windows happily saved photos to it as well.
Sometimes WM behaves in a strange manner...
