Am I ready to install a theme ?? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need some help from someone. I'm kinda n00b to all this rooting stuff. But I want know if I'm ready to install a custom theme like "Hero" for g1
I Have a Unlocked TMobile G1
Running CyanogenMod v1.4 + JF
Mod Version: Cyanogen Mod 4.2.8.1
Build Number: DRC83
Radio: 1.22.12.29
HSPL: 10.95.3000
Can I just go ahead an install a theme ?

It sounds like you are.
You can find most of them at this forum section
Make sure you only install themes that are for your installed ROM/Mod (e.g. CyanogenMod 4.2.8.1) or say that they will work with a VERY similar ROM (e.g. CM 4.2.*).
Also, ALWAYS make a Nandroid backup before you change anything on your phone. That way, worst case, you can restore it and go back to exactly the way things were before you attempted to install something that didn't work or that you didn't like.
Good luck! I guarantee it will not be a problem if you spend the time to read the stickies on the forums.

[Q] Few ROM and SPL Questions

I've got a few questions, hope no one minds answering. If it's a simple case of RTFM then lock the thread and trash.
1. I've rooted and am using the latest JF build but when I go to telnet I can't connect to localhost anymore. Is this normal?
2. I'm running stock SPL and Radio (not too sure what the radio is btw). Is it best I update before flashing anymore roms?
3. I'm wanting to flash to Cyanogen Mod rom, it looks a lot more complex than simply renaming the rom to update.zip then flashing. Is it safe to assume that there is a lot more work to do? (if so a general point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated).
I really appreciate any help.
Thanks
1. I'm not sure as it has been some time since I last used JF's build I'm afriad...
2. Its advisable at the very least to upgrade your radio (look at my signature for a link). You can upgrade your SPL too providing you have flashed the latest radio FIRST and that you are on a PVT motherboard.
Boot into the SPL to find that out (turn off/reboot the mobile, Hold CAMERA+POWER). It should say at the top.
3. To use Cyanogen's ROM its like flashing any other ROM. Just make sure you have the latest Radio FIRST. Also I believe it works fine for non Apps2SD users so no need to partition your SD card etc to use it.
Hope that helps.
Stock SPL? do you mean HARDSpL?

Unless it was updated while rooting it's probably "G1 Original SPL"
Thanks NeoBlade, I'll update the radio and spl tomorrow then probably try and get nandroid running so I've got a backup in case anything goes wrong.
No worries digital, just do your usual pre-checks before flashing the SPL and remember Radio first ^_-
You'll enjoy the new features and performance improvements using the latest cooked ROMs out there. Most of the info is in my signature but you can also flash the new Recovery image too by Cyanogen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523558).
Not only can you create a Nandroid backup from there, you can also restore it too all from your mobile ^_^
Not to be an @ssh*le, but if you root your phone don't you already have the HardSPL? If you follow Koush's guide you were told to flash the HardSPL which isn't the stock SPL at all. Care to shed some light on this?
He could have had the engineering SPL, I remember having that briefly myself in the early days. The main thing is that he just wants to run Cyanogen's ROM so as long as he updates the radio and flashes the ROM without issues it should be fine. Unlike some Hero ROMs it doesn't require the latest SPL to create space for the ROM.
Granted though, its often always nice to have the latest stuff ^_-
Ok well if you DECIDE to update to the latest radio and SPL just go to my guide below and go to the second post. That will tell you how to install the radio and spl updates!
Good luck!
Indeed ^_^ And once that's done, perhaps change the title to SOLVED so people know. We shall have to wait for digital to get back to us about it.
This is the guide I used:
http://haykuro.theiphoneproject.org/?page_id=35
Sorry alritewhadeva:
I'm on the HardSPL so I guess I don't need to bother updating that again. I didn't get to the point where it said to update to the newest radio.
Reading a bit further it also says that I can do a backup easily using adb which is already setup. At some point in the process it must have installed the things needed for nandroid backup. I think it was the recovery.img part.
Thanks for the great link Nephron, I used it before to setup adb on my netbook (running win7 on my main machine).
Before I flash the latest radio is it safe to do this *after* updating the spl?
Thanks for all the great help, I really appreciate it.
As a thumb of rule, always flash the radio first before the SPL and the ROM.
Tell us how it goes ^_^ If you've managedto do it, could you please edit the title then to add SOLVED? Good luck.
Soo do you have to flash the radio and SPL everytime you want to flash a rom??? i already have the latest radio, i just want to make sure i dont make a mistake

No you don't. Only once... then kind of keep an eye on the forum to see if better radio or SPL comes along. So far I had to update my radio once. What recovery image do you have (home+power), is it still JF1.43? You should update that to CM 1.4, you get a lot more flexibility with that... read up on it in development forum. All in all, unless you plan to install Hero anytime soon (and I personally don't recommend it, too slow and buggy) you should be good with (in that very order)
1. Flashing newest RADIO (Haykuro has it in the link you provided, only need to do it once and you already did it!)
2. Flashing HardSPL (you already did that too! no need to do it again)
2. Updating your Recovery Image (once more, this only needs to be done once)
After that - flash any rom you feel like at any time you feel like doing it.
Hope that helps, good luck!
I agree with everything borodin1 said. If you're on a 1.5 ROM you really should have the new radio already, but you can always go back and flash it. Afterwards you'll want hard SPL or haykuro's. Haykuro's is what you'll need for most HTC based ROMs (Hero, Rogers). Most people brick when flashing Haykuro's ROM because they don't read. Aslong as you have the new radio and a PVT phone (go to the bootloader - home + camera - and it should say PVT) you will be fine.

Hey all!
i have some questions to this app:
http://www.cyrket.com/package/org.zenthought.flashrec
http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2009/08/16/android-rooting-in-1-click-in-progress/
1. does it works on T-Mobile D G1 with any FW? or also only with RC29 or RC7?
2. is flashing "HardSPL" or "DangerSPL" a musthave or can i use the original SPL (iam scarry to flah SPL)?
3. when i restore the backup do i have the full original t-mobile D delivery version of my G1?
4. how i restore the original recovery.img
5. if needed, how do i restore the original SPL
6. do i need to flash the Radio manual or do the apk make this
7. is this the right order?
- download apk
- install apk
- download CyanogenMod v4.0.1
- save as update.zip on SD root
- execute apk
- create backup
- flash Cyanogen recovery 1.4
- reboot into the new
- flash CyanogenMod v4.0.1
- Wipe
- boot G1
- download new Radio
- copy Radio as Radio.zip to SD root
- update Radio via Cyanogen recovery 1.4
- done
- boot G1 (now i have a rooted G1 with CyanogenMod v4.0.1)
please correct me if the is anything wrong or if i missed any step!!
iam "noob" with android - but i hope not for a long time
As a N00b you should at least read the Sticky posts, like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=528334 this one...
It's called:
"Don't Start A New Thread - Dream Questions & Answers Here!"
All questions should be posted in the Q&A Section. I'm not too familiar with the 1-click rooting since it's been out for less than 72hrs so from what I've heard the 1-click root flashes cyan's recovery for you so all you have to do is this:
-Download and flash newest radio
-Download and flash Hard SPL
-Wipe
-Download and flash CM v4.0.1
If you do it in this order I'm 99.99999% sure you won't brick your phone, but once again please post all future question in the Q&A section

Yes, this app worked perfectly for me ( cuz I dun wanna waste my time doing all the porcess of pulling the firmware back to RC29 ). If u have the latest radio, then just execute the .apk, turn off your phone right after doing all the required process from that app ( back up current img then Flash the 1.4 img from Cyanogen I remember ), then go into recovery mode and you have the newest recovery img. (Remember to put the CyanogenModv4.0.1 to your SD first). Then Wipe and Flash the update, and you're done
and it works without flashing SPL????

hard spl will not brick your phone. it is needed to flash roms from other regions than yours. hard spl is a good thing to have. also with it you can flash nandroid back ups and you can change your splash screen to further personalize your dream. enough said... go download it. flash it. if you have to wipe, then wipe. if you don't like wiping then you should not have rooted in the first place.
but to use this tool have id need to flash the SPL or works it with the original SPL too? in the manual and one the youtube video- there is no info about a need to flash the SPL.
all i want to know is:
can i just install this app, flash the new radio, run the backup, flash recovery, flash CFW, and iam done or not
yes you can do that. afterwards i would recommend flashing the hard spl.
you do not have to flash it, but it would be a good thing.

thanks, should i flash the radio befor i try to root my G1 with the 1-click rooting? or after i flashed the custom FW?
I used the "1-click root"
I followed all the steps and my phone is working fine, but how can you tell if its rooted?
Also, if it is rooted and I wanted to install the most current cyanogen ROM, do I have to install the new radio and SPL files?
Thanks in adv for putting up with my N00Bness.
what build do you have now? rc33? i would first update the radio. i would not mess with the newer spl as it has been known to brick phones. also did you install cynogen's recovery image? turn phone off then hold power button and home key when you turn it on to put you back into recovery image. it should say cynogen recovery 1.4 on top. it will have a number of options on the bottom nandroid backup, restore nandroid etc. if that cynogen"s recovery image is on the phone its rooted. after you flash the latest radio, i would flash jf 1.51 build then cynogens latest build. i heard the going to cynogens latest build will cause a bootloop if your not coming from another modded build.

To tell if the phone is rooted, download terminal emulator from the market and type su at the prompt. If the phone is rooted, the prompt should go from a $ to a #. If not, you will get a permission denied error message. If that is the case, probably go the old fashion way of rooting
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548924
As far as the SPL and radio, you don't need the danger SPL (haykuro's) but you will need to engineering SPL or hard SPL to install custom ROMs. As far as the radio, you want to latest radio to improve calls, bluetooth, etc.
hi im also new..
i did the 1 click root too. i did the back up, then flashed the 1.4. then the nandroid backup, then wiped the data, then flashed cyanogens 4.0.1. so im pretty sure im rooted.. and everything works too! except myfaves and the native im app.
but whats this about the radio? do i have to update that? i havent messed with the radio at all.. what are the dangers in this? if any?

I rooted my phone, now what?

I've seen some pretty cool mods of the g1 out there, but how do I do it? For example how do I change my home screen, how do I tether, and what are the best roms? And if I do change the rom, will i have to root again?
Thank You

Cyan recovery 1.4
Cyan ROM 4.0.4
Nandroid Backup
AFTER all of that you can install a theme in the theme forum but make sure it is made for Cyan 4.0.4 and if you have problems do a restore using nandroid.
If you want specific instructions on each of these then look through the guides.
You will find a link for tethering in the cyan thread.
DO NOT skip the nandroid backup step.
Cyan? Is that a rom? Will I need to root my phone again to add that? I'm running jf 1.5 DP, if that helps...
First, give yourself a clap on the back, you did better than most
No you will not have to root again since by rooting you are turning your security off, the only way to unroot is to go back to using a stock provider build
Next a rom is a custom android build
The name rom sticks with us from our win mobile days
Yes cyanogen is the name of the dev who self named is rom also

Stuck, don't know where to start now...

I have a tmob G1 and I've been running cyanogen for months with no problem. When I updated to 4.2.12 I noticed performance issues that I'd never seen before. This is commented on a lot at the cyanogenmod site and thats where I did most of my research. I read a post where someone factory defaulted, and then re-installed 4.2.12 and said it was flying again. They use DRC83 defanged? I know where to find that but I'm not sure what it is or if I need that. Many ppl made like comments. I read that I should get the radio and recovery imgs at the htc site so I did and flashed both. This is where (I think) I made my first mistake as I have a G1 and not an ADP1. My phone is now running fine with stock 1.6 and the above radio but instead of G1 it says my phone is a ADP1 (obviously). I've tried to install cyanogen 4.2.13 but I'm guessing that I am not rooted anymore because I can't? I've tried the rooting ADP instructions from cyanogen wiki and that doesn't work. Looking at the same instructions for the G1 it says I need to downgrade to RC29 but that seems like a big step backwards. Is that what I need to do? Do I have to start all over again? I don't know what my next move should be? Thanks!
Gonna have to Use the DreaIMG and go back down(make sure dont have danger SPL,but you went back down so dont think you do) then get the "signed-dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721" and a recovery (i like amon ra 1.5.2) and get your fav rom( i would give superD 1.2 a try[1.6 requires danger SPL] and 1.2 seems the most stable) but if your goin to use cyan rom get the latest cyan rom, from there after flashed recovery go into recovery do a wipe then flash the dev ota, dont reboot, then flash cyans rom after do a reboot and should be back on cyan's rom
Brilliant! I'm back up and running latest cyanogen. I completely missed the part about dreaimg in the wiki instructions. Thanks for the help.
Also, out of curiosity, why do you like super d? Whats the difference between it and cyanogenmod? Thanks again.
Super D is, in a way, one step faster then the current CM build. It comes with a 10mb ram hack pre-installed as well which is always nice. Don't get me wrong, CM has a dedicated thread on 10mb ram hacks.
Ultimately, it comes down to user experience. And it's always nice to try something new.

I like Cyan roms just as much as anybody, to a personal pref. i had lot of problems, gapps went missing after updated, FC's and what not, and i did everything from going back down(dreamimg) to update from latest, still had problems, then i wen to superD and i notice a great increase of speed and all around well stabled rom

[Q] I need some advice on updating my G1.

So I just picked up an original T-Mobile branded G1. It's got the stock 1.6 firmware on it now. I would like to try running 2.2 on it but I have absolutely no idea how to go about it.
So far I have determined that there are more flavours to choose from than at a baskin robbins. I'm also completely lost when it comes to radios, kernals, bootloaders and other things expressed as three letter acronyms.
Could anyone suggest a good solid 2.2 firmware and the specific supporting bits and pieces I will need to make it work? I really want to see this phone shine.
Like everything else, read the development forum on the ROM. Do a research on what each ROM will do. Some ROM needs a specific SPL (HBOOT) and radio in order for it to work properly. As you already know (from your post) there are many different flavor of ROMs. Some deal with speed, and performance. Other deal with functionality of the apps. Most of them if not all are on 2.3 at this point.
You will have to sit down and read the instruction once you decided which ROM you wants.
Most everyone love Gingerbread series (specifically Gingerbread Yoshi and ezGingerbread).
I, myself, started with CM 6.0.0 RC1 (2.2) and after it crashed on me I end up loading SuperAosp DM 2.8.2 (with 2.3 on it) with the recommendation by one of the member here. It is fast performance, and that what I need.
So, you'll have to decide what you want to do with your G1 before you flash it with a custom ROM.
I have done this, this week end.
Here there is a post about the ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4647751&postcount=1
and this one for the radio i find
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640535
i suggest you to do a Nandroid backup before, and format your SDCARD ( i didnt done this, but i read about some problems to install the rom) and you will reboot your device after changing Recovery and After flashing the rom. and htc logo take a while befor showing cyanogem mod.
tell here if you find problems
So everyone says good things about http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811620. It seems a good place to start. But I'm still a n00b. What, precisely, do I need to do with my bone stock (But unlocked) G1 to install it? Do I need to root it first?
"If you refuse to upgrade or can't upgrade because you have a 32a (1.2 or classic) device: you will need an alternative kernel as described in step 4.b 4.c or the phone will not boot
Note: 2.22.27.08 will also work but is not how the ota was shipped
* Uesrs of other SPLs can either use Danger (dream only), any sapphire SPL on the magic/sapphire/MT3G or alternatively Custom MTD I recommend "87 2" (system/cache) {as of test3 06bindcache will work if you install the parts package, thus if you use CustomMTD parts is mandatory to avoid market issues} "
Does that just mean I need http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831139? Then why does it say "Please note this includes my 20101106 - 2708 ported kernel"
What is an SPL? What's this about Danger? What's fastboot?
I'm much better with a soldering iron than software.

You will need to root your phone, if you want to flash custom ROM. Unlocking it is just so you can use it on other network.
BTW! I was a noob at this probably a week or so ago, when I first started to work on upgrading my G1. Now I am learning the rope and helping others.
