ROM Confusion - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile ROM Development

Merry Christmas all!
I'm not exactly a newbie when it comes to Windows Mobile or flashing ROMS, but thus far I have stuck to "official" versions. Now I'm looking to get into some of the custom ROMS I keep reading about.
I hope I don't offend anyone by saying this, but the ROM development forum is a confusing disorganized mess for someone like me who is just catching up now. The WIKI led me to a link (that hasn't been updated since September) where it looks like someone started to organize everything, but apparently gave up.
Is there a current list somewhere of all the different ROMS available, what OS version they are based on, and a short description of them?
Thanks for any help!

Long story short:
This specific forum (the current one that you posted your thread in) is for various GSM ROMs that include WM 6.5 and WM 6.5.x. Basically, you can tell a good bit by reading the title of the threads, but clicking on the thread will give you more insight as to what apps and customization are included.
Also note:
Windows Mobile 21xxx = Windows Mobile 6.5
Windows Mobile 28xxx = Windows Mobile 6.5.x (x=1, 2, 3, etc)
For example, if you look at this thread's title:
|R|6.5.3|WWE| ★ EnergyROM "Leo" 28014/21885 |Dec 17| ★ Sense 2.5/ MaxManila /Dusk
|R|6.5.3|ROM|WWE| ★ EnergyROM "Phoenix 2" 28014/21885 ★Dec 17★ Sense 2.1/Titanium ★
You will see that there is a Windows Mobile 6.5 version (21885) and a Windows Mobile 6.5.3 version (28014). You can also see Sense 2.5 and 2.1 named (Sense 2.5 is the newer Touch Flo 3D interface used on the HD2). Sense 2.1 is what you probably use now and it is more stable. Sense 2.5 still has a little ways to go (screen rotation being one of them). Many ROMs include downloads that include one or both sense versions (2.1 or 2.5).
If you click on the threads, you'll get more info as can be seen below:
You will find TWO core versions of my ROM.
* The 21885 Build is from the OEM COM2 Tree and is the most reliable and bug free release. I recommend you start with this first!
And...
* The 28014 Build that's the latest in the 6.5.3 series with the Start/Close buttons at the bottom. These builds are not as stable but they reflect the latest cutting edge technology from Microsoft.

I agree with you, and I found it very very confusing at first when I came here. However, over a short period of time I could start to see what the more popular ROMs were (based on the number of people giving feedback about them etc), and started to get an idea on what they were about based on reading the latest replies (most of the threads are way too big to read all the way through !);
Is there a current list somewhere of all the different ROMS available, what OS version they are based on, and a short description of them?

I don't think so, but the previous reply has given some useful tips. Normally in the first few posts for each ROM you'll find some sort of basic description and screenshots. Don't be afraid to just jump into the water and start flashing though, you can easily change which ROM you're running if you don't like it. Stick to 6.5 (not 6.5.3) and Manila/Sense 2.1 if you want to stay with the "safer" (most stable) options initially.

Keep reading! Keep flashing!!! Good luck.

this is a cool and tech-savvy sheet full of ... (come on, download it and have a look )
A good start and I had the same idea but the problem is Forum rules state post with subjective material is a violation. By you stating folders are ugly to you it may not be to another person, therefore it is subjective.
Another suggestion is on the soft key menus state whether it is in only manila or system wide large menus.
I wish you luck in the thread remaining open.

Thanks for reminding. Sorry for my words. I've updated the spreadsheet.
And, if it states HTC large menu, it's all system wide.
It would be a disaster if this thread were to be closed - this is vital information for people new around here.
The only downside to things like this is that it is of course subjective, but that really isn't enough, in this case, to warrant closing the thread. This is a topic that I think about *every* time I see another release of a ROM, and frankly, I'm bloody sick of hard resetting my device just so I can try out the latest and greatest from people (currently poking around with the two 6.5 roms from Miri and Davideuch)
I really hope this thread stays open, and that the spreadsheet improves over time
In my opinion, there is a lot of non subjective information here.
Figures about speed would be really interesting, if this is somehow measurable.

ROMs compared are:
. Energy
. Davideuck_V-4_HP
. Dutty
. Davideuck_V-7
. panosha Black Pearl
. Kwbr
. Uzeb
Please be noted:
. Latest versions I found are used.
. Only WWE Windows Mobile 6.1 ROMs are compared. Really I don't like WM 6.5
. This comparison is by no means really completed. I compared only the features I'm interested in. For example, I don't think there is great difference amony different CE OS kernel version, so I didn't compare them.
Hope helpful.

Funny I was actually talking to bobsbbq last week about doing a thread similar to this with comparisons between roms I have tested including performance outputs etc
You beat me to it. If I can help in anything let me know
Just a note Dutty's icons are not customized, those are new HTC icons in the Start Menu. Dutty's roms are always the closest roms to Classic/ Stock Roms i've found.
Also Opera is included in Dutty's v2.6, Manila is not classic its the newest HTC build v2 (unless i don't understand what you mean by classic)
good comparison! well done.
there is one more feature i personaly find useful, is the facebook link. If "My Contact card" and contacts are linked with facebook. I am not sure if this feature is completely independent or if it is always in, when push internet is integrated.
I am sure that facebook link works in Dutty ROM, but is no integrated in Energy ROM.

I agree... measurable specs would be more interesting... I know that Dutty for example publishes a lot of measurements of his ROMs on his site...
nice work
I like the spread sheet I was thinking about doing that, great job man
3g compatable
Thanks for the comparisions - great job. Another important inclusion in your charts could be whether the rom supports 3g.
I have installed several cooked roms from different people and have noticed that some do not support the 850 band I require for 3g coverage.
The latest roms I installed were Davidueks V4 and Duttys 2.6. Both very good roms and each has it advantages / disadvantages but I have stayed with Dutty as V4 does not enable the 3g which I require.
thanks for the spreadsheet.. might also be good to add in whether it is a GSM or 3G ROM as the Energy rom is gsm. cheers man!
go ahead
nice to have this kind of comparison. spare some extra flashing. would be nice to extend with more technical details like size of rom after flashing or figures of benchmarks etc. thanks for your great starting idea. i'm back to see your spreadsheet. i hope it will be migrated to stickyes soon when more people think it valuable.
Here is a spreadsheet I started on

[UPDATED:]
I'm not a native-english speaker so by no means I'd like to be subjective. The word in western culture/english is a little difficult for me to fully understand.
I don't mean to attack or depreciate any ROM author who is thankful and deserve respect. Well the title had better to be something like 'cheat sheet' or 'feature briefing' which looks more friendly. I'm not sure whether 'comparison' is, sort of, aggresive. (looks like thread author can't change the thread's title ?)
How about sharing the doc with volunteers who'd like to update it?

Flashing: when to make the leap?

Hi all. After much gnashing of teeth with awful performance of my Touch HD, which was cured by sending it back & getting fixed, I'm now at a stage where everything's working quite well, so naturally I want to tinker with it
I've seen recent (i.e. this week) posts about continued improvements by MS on the 6.5 OS, which will assumedly get incorporated into future ROMs. Also, HTC seems to be getting near to releasing touchflo/manilla 2.5.
As i've not flashed before (ho ho), I'm a bit trepidatious about the whole thing, and am keen not to have to do it regularly, given the hassle of PIMbackup/sashimi/scripts/etc. So what I'd like to geet a feel for - what I wonder if anyone has any useful opinion about - is:
If you were upgrading, when would you do it? What would you wait for? A specific WM6.5 build? A stable release notice from MS? An official release of manilla2.5? A cooked ROM which has official stable manilla2.5 final on top of official stable 6.5 final, and has been beta-tested like crazy by other users?
All musings appreciated.
Cheers

Quite right too!!
the HDs standard ROM is dog-awful compared to the somewhat refined offerings on this forum.
IMO avoid Manilla 2.5 until HTC have finished it...its getting a lot better but needs some refinement.
decide whether you want 6.1 or 6.5 then have a look through the chefs thread for each version ie. NRGZ28, Dutty , Mirri to name but a few (apologies to the chefs not mentioned)
the latest build of each ROM are 'usually' ok but its alway best to check the most recent posting in any thread which some give some indication of this.
Also make sure you read the wiki regarding flashing CrackWhore i believe offers sound advice.
and dont for a second think you will only flash once! LOL its very addictive.
but there is one thing for certain no matter whose ROM you go for it WILL utterly transform your HD
good luck & happy flashing!!
Don't be scared, read up properly and flash away.
As said, It's addictive and you'll end up trying all the different Roms.
Only you can decide what and when is a good time to try whatever OS or Manilla you want, they are changing all the time so I would follow purecodes advice and get flashing.
Basically get the latest Hardspl, then decide on a rom and have them all downloaded ready on the pc. have loads of wiki type pages open to reassure you and plug in, install the Hards spl (5 mins) and them the rom (10-15 mins)
I use pim backup for contacts, texts, calender, etc and sprite for email and tones/settings, never had a problem with gettin the phone back how i like it within half an hour. MS myphone is another backup to have.

As long as you follow dummies guide for flashing and read up on each rom you'll be fine.
As for everything else, your queries are opinionated and will create a long thread and is thus frowned upon. For this reason I am closing this thread.

Difference between WinMobile 6.5 Versions?

hi,
some days ago i have found a thread about the difference between the WinMobile 6.5 (23.../21...) Version, but i cant find this thread again, can somebody say me what is the Difference, or post the link to a helping thread ?
There are basically two types of WM6.5 which are in use at the moment.
The 21xxx branch refers to WM6.5 as the version that is/will be used by HTC when they update their newer devices.
The 23xxx branch refers to WM6.5 as the version which will eventually become WM7. It has the bigger buttons (and start is also on the bottom). This version is also referred to as WM6.5.1.
The 21xxx branch is the more stable atm, since not all programs can adapt well to the new buttons in the 23xxx branch.
Hope this clarifies it a bit !
Thanks for that, cleared it up for me too

Hi guys,
can you maybe also explain (just out of interest, I am not an expert) what Leo means and what this brings on WM? Also I wonder what the Manilla versions do and their differences.
Maybe an Idea to start a threat about all parts/differences.
I am just curious and read a lot so just would like to know a little bit more.
Best regards,
Sander

Leo is the name for the new phone from htc (the HTC HD 2).
It is also the first with the new manila version (2.5), which is why it is often referred to as the 'leo manila version'.
It doesn't really bring anything new to WM, WM is developed separately from Manila (WM by Microsoft and manila by HTC). Of course HTC adepts her Manila to WM, or atleast it should .
This is afaik how things are related
Thank you for explaining. It becomes much clearer now.

To see if you have a CDMA device, look underneath the battery. There will be a model number in the form of RHOD100, RHOD210, et cetera. Tell us which one is on your device.
WM6.5.5 development is all but dead. There is some continuing development on 6.5.3, though. My advice would be to just pick a few that you like and flash them until something sticks.
I must admit I am dissapointed from those fantastic cooked ROMs.
I have tested a lots of ROM. Almost all of them look amazing but after short period of time I found important issues. Starting with cool themes - black icons and black wallpaper which could not be reader outside building and ending with super functionality, but very slow system responses.
Finally, I use stock ROM with two HTC fixes - one for SMS stability and second for speakerphone issue (all for S2).
Stock ROM is good. The only issue is speed.
Sorry I did not realize that you were asking about my phone, it is a CDMA.

NK & OS build version info needed...

I had been using WM6.1 ROMs till now and am planning to cook a 6.5 ROM for myself. For this I need a 6.5 SYS and XIP. I went around looking for a SYS download at xda, and within minutes I was baffled. I saw that different cooks use different build trees for X1 ROMs. I couldn't find an answer for the differences between these different builds. In one thread it said was one tree was Motorola, another was HTC, while another was Sony Ericsson. Does this mean that these builds were developed for these companies and will work only in their products.
I need help understanding which version to use. I have seen 6.5 builds with different UI designs, like oval buttons at bottom, rectangular buttons, start menu at top. If some one can help me with this or point me in the right direction, that would be wonderful.
I also need the 6.5 native kernel for X1. The links in the thread for that are dead, and it seems the thread itself is dead. If some one could point out to a thread with a valid link or a link to the NK, it would be great. I could get the NK from someone's kitchen, but the bandwidth is too limited for me at the moment, and I was hoping that I wouldn't have to wait till my DSL problems are sorted out.
