There is *NO BENEFIT* to it (despite what all the MORONS will claim, it is NOT required for ANYTHING), and regardless of your hardware, there is ALWAYS a risk.
Fact is that the deathspl is NOT COMPATIBLE with ANY HTC DREAM, so don't be using it!

All it means is that the rom dev was REALLY LAZY. All you need to do is a VERY MINOR modification and resign to the update.zip. Move some files into /cache and symlink them back.
Or, you could simply use a rom where the rom dev(s) aren't so lazy and actually made the thing to intelligently move files around...
i.e. this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=629932
or this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624545
(note re the second one: the requirements list shows DEATHSPL. This is NOT the case.)

Im confused. Im not trying to offend you (as maybe Im not getting something), but are you saying that Dwang and Cyanogen ar lazy? After all, they are responsible for Super D 1.8 (which I hear is AWESOME) and it requires the danger spl.
Or is there a better way to flash Super D?

They are not responsible for Super-D but rather their work is the base for it. I don't agree with lbcoder but I understand what he is saying. Lazy is not the choise of words I would choose to use.

Gotcha. Im assuming then that you have nothing against using the Danger SPL when required (and if the hardware matches)?
Lazy, ignorant, how about a FAKE.
99.9% of rom cookers haven't the FAINTEST idea what they're doing. They haven't written a single line of code in their LIVES and all they do is mix and match APK files in the update archive, put their own personalized B.S. in the build.prop file, and resign the archive.
So "lazy" *IS* the right word. Too lazy to actually learn something of any significance. Note: the work needed to get ANY rom onto a STOCK SPL is quite literally *TRIVIAL*. Drag a few files around, add a couple of lines to the update-script, done.

Wow. Ok, now I'm a bit paranoid to flash Super D tomorrow on my G1 (waiting on Class 6 micro), as I haven't heard this issue brought up before.
The forums have been chock full of anger lately. Not sure where it all comes from except maybe the weather has people down.
I think the WG roms do not require the Danger SPL so that would be a good choice. Our phones are a very tight fit but some roms do fit just fine.
I am running out of here with my head down! Good Luck.
So no answers that are clearing the situation. Is possible or not to install Danger SPL/ Death SPL over the DREA100 PVT version???

Which SPL are you currently using? You should be fine since you have a PVT board, its just the DVT boards that cannot use the Danger SPL. When I reboot holding the camera button this is what the top line says
"DREAM PVT 32B ENG S-OFF"
What does yours say?

HBOOT-0.95.0000

More down and centered is also written Seria10
Hope that is useful.
Are you still on the stock SPL? I just did a little googling and it seems that DREA100 PVT 32B is normal to see on the stock SPL. The key is to know that you have a PVT board, which you do. I would say you should be fine. Check out the link in my sig and ask in that thread and maybe someone else will weight in. The dev section gets a lot more traffic than the q&a section.
Don't let lbcoder scare you, if you know what your doing, DEATH spl is completely safe. Follow Joe's guide, its easy to follow and guaranteed not to screw you up. I've been using death spl for the last few months and my G1 is still running It makes life a helluva lot easier for you just to have it installed, then you won't have to worry about a rom not fitting in your phone. Thanks for the link i tried searching but couldnt find it.
That covers the "safe" SPLs, though in theory a bad flash with any bootloader can brick a phone. If you're interested in the "Danger" SPL, which is also known as the Haykuro SPL or the "newest" SPL, check the link in my sig. This SPL really isn't a problem to flash if you have a PVT board and if you make sure to flash to the latest radio first. It also frees up more room on your device, because it takes up less space and repartitions your device accordingly.
Hey all,
I have a HTC Dream that has the following setup:
"Android on Skateboards" SPL
Maxishma's OS Build (4/Aug/09)
512MB Apps2SD EXT2 Partition
32MB Swap Partition
I'm thinking of installing this build on my HTC Dream, but it says something about needing a new SPL and Radio. I didn't want to risk bricking my phone, so I wanted to ask the community first.
On bootloader mode, I get the following:
DREA110 PVT 32B
HSPL10.95.3000
CPLD-4
RADIO-1.22.12.29
Oct 20 2008

In the radio and SPL flashing guide, it said something about it having to be DREA100 or something. I wasn't sure.
Could someone please guide me the steps? I'm eager to try some of the Hero builds, and I'm just wanting to play it safe and not end up with a brick.
Thanks in advance,
Coburn64.
you have a pvt board so you should be good as long as you follow directions and FLASH RADIO BEFORE SPL. mayble one more time for the people in the brick seats. thats radio before the spl. but i digress. you should be all set as far as phone requirements. just make sure to read up on it so that you know all the steps and you to can run hero.
Yep just like David said your phone meets the requirements but read and reread before you do anything. Radio first then spl. And after you load spl you will have to flash a new rom cause the spl overwrites your existing rom. Just to let you know so your not freaked out.
Thanks for all the tips and info! I'll try this tonight and report back with any problems.
I've done a nandroid backup as well, does it save all your emails/contacts, etc?
Thanks again.
Nand saves your exact image including emails/contacts/messages?app settings. It will not save anything that's on your SD card so if you format your card you will need to re-download everything.
Good luck
Hi, i bricked my phone by installing the death spl, before i brick another one I was just wondering if someone could be kind enough to guide me through on how to install it after i rooted the phone. Thanks.
1)Gain root/flash the recovery image
2)Flash any 1.5/1.6 based ROM (that doesn't require 1.33.2005 SPL...that's what "death" actually is...)
3) Check your radio, go to Settings > About, baseband version should end in 26i.
If not flash this (You must name it update.zip, flash with alt-s, and reboot using home+back, if not it wont flash), otherwise don't bother.
4) Check your radio again The reason it bricked before was that you didn't have the radio for 1.5/1.6
5) Flash the SPL (again, name it update.zip, alt-s, home+back. If not it just wont flash).
6) Your phone will reboot, just leave it a few minutes to be safe
7) Pull the battery, put it back in, boot in to recovery
8) Flash a ROM.
Make sure u have a phone with a pvt board
Thank you very much AdrianK, but what is a pvt board?
pvt board is nonsense.
Back when people started installing the deathspl, nobody could figure out the pattern of devices that bricked or not bricked, so some people tried to guess at the possibilities and one of the guesses was that dvt boards bricked. This was NOT the reason though -- plenty of pvt boards bricked, and plenty of dvt boards DID NOT brick.
It was later discovered that the big thing that GUARANTEED a brick was the installed IPL and its compatibility with the deathspl, but some people still remember the incorrect guess about the cause of bricks and for whatever reason assume it to be a valid reason.
A statistical analysis of the bricks will show that as of now, a LOT more pvt boards are bricked than dvt... partly because of the assumption that a dvt WILL brick (and therefore nobody tries), but mainly because there are a LOT MORE pvt boards than dvt boards.
Anyways, don't worry about pvt vs dvt. It makes no difference. The only known factor is the IPL version... but some brick despite the IPL (i.e., all the steps appear to have been followed correctly), and this includes pvt boards.
1) There is always a risk of bricking when installing an SPL that is *NOT COMPATIBLE* with the device... and this SPL is from an HTC MAGIC -- it is not compatible with ANY HTC DREAMs.
2) pvt/dvt makes no difference.
3) to *reduce* the chances of coming out with a brick, ensure that the IPL is correct.
4) there is actually no reason to bother with this. You can move some system files into the /cache partition and symlink them if you need more space for /system.

Look at adriank's post -- step 3.
Hello I have a mytouch3g with CM 4.2.10.1. Both my radio and SPL are the stock ones.
Now, I want to flash my Perfect SPL to a Non perfect one.
First of all can someone FINALLY explain to me what a non perfect SPL will do for me?
And can someone please epxplain WHICH SPL to use and a step by step guide on how to flash it? i dont want to brick my phone . I HAVE googled this and have found guides for G1 and 32A but not for mytouch (32B)
Also im not sure if this is where to post but because Dream Dev forums also server as Magic 32B forums Im going out on a limb here lol
Again any help would be appreciated!
as long as you are running CM rom you don't need to flash/update spl
... wat if i want to try another rom?
can you please not reply 'you dont need it' and instead reply what the benefits are and how to flash it?
thanks!
The reason you flash a new SPL is so that you can use different ROMs that need it. Unless you want to switch from Cyanogen then there isn't a reason to flash a new SPL. If you want to flash Haykuro's SPL (A.K.A "Death" SPL) then here are my instructions.
1. Make sure you have a custom recovery.img like Amon-Ra's or Cyan's
2. Download the new radio and Haykuro's SPL from here. http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
Also download whatever new ROM you want to try out that uses the new SPL. Put those 3 .zips onto your SD card.
3. Put your phone into recovery and make a Nand Backup, just in case.
4. FLASH THE RADIO FIRST!!! IF YOU FLASH THE SPL BEFORE THE RADIO THEN YOUR PHONE WILL BRICK!!!
5. Flash the SPL.
6. Flash your new ROM.
Yes, exactly in that order, and yes, you have to flash a new ROM or reflash the one you're using.
BTW, I am not responsible if you brick your phone.
what about flashing custom splash images?
and yes i do want to try some other roms

Using an SPL file for the dream, like you've been linked to in a previous post could quite possibly brick you're phone.
CyanogenMod work's on both Dream's & Sapphires but not all associated fies for theese phone are interchangeable, solely based on the fact that the ROM you're using is.
My best advice to you would be to browse the Sapphire threads before going any further with you're mod's
woot flashed my SPL to 1.33.2005 and it worked like a charm! also flashed my splash image.
jsut one question: on my bootloader screen the SPL says H, instead of G. My stock perfect SPL said G. I know H stands for HTC SPL and G is the Google SPL, but what is the difference in functionality?

Haykuro SPL allows larger roms to be installed(i feel like a broken record repeating this) that's all you need to know the other details arent necessary to know.

I dont understand why your so concerned with that, its should say Hboot.
Sapphire/Magic/Ion/MT3G roms are here, some G1 roms work though

what?? No everything works i can load into bootloader, change from Hboot mode to fastboot mode, i can boot into my ROM (cyanogen 4.2.10.1) and everything seems to be working.
to clarify: in bootloader, on top it it used to show me (on stock perfect SPL) SAPPHIRE PVT 32B ENG S-ON G
now it shows me (on danger SPL) SAPPHIRE PVT 32B ENG S-OFF H
the G changed to an H
I have read that the H stands for an HTC SPL and G stands for Google SPL. Since the stock SPL was google and I changed to HTC is this going to cause any problems? and was it suppose to change to an H in the first place or did i do something wrong??

Hi everybody
I rooted a G1, I downgrade it with 29RC, then I made the installation of the recovery-RA-dream-v1.7.0 following the flashed the radio (G1-radio-2_22_23_02 and the spl (Latest G1 SPL). I used the 1.6 DRD 3611745 test-keys rooted firmware.
Everything is working well, but when I try to install a firmware as update-cm-6.0.0-DS-RC3-signed, Chromatic 4.4 or extreme-froyo an error showed:
Code:
getprop("ro.bootloader")=="1.33.2011" II ( this message is repeated on the G1)
E:Error in /sdcard/update-cm-6.0.0-DS-RC3-signed (Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Also I tried to update it with update-cm-5.0.7-DS-test3-signed and it was accepted but it does not boot, it stay with the G1 logo.
What could be wrong?, I restore with my rooted backup (1.6) and it work again without problems.
Your comments with be appreciated.

Ok what he is mainly asking you is in bootloader you see the spl. That's what he's saying looks fishy. The rest of what you got looks ok. So tell him what spl your reading in bootloader. And what your bootloader looks like.

Ok well you know you flashed the radio if it says 2.22.23.02. You have the pvt goin on. So now for the scary part. 1.33.2005 danger spl. As long as you have that radio your good. But make sure ya hear me!!!! When you flash rc29 it will downgrade that radio. So you have to reflash it. BEFORE danger spl 1.33.2005
Good luck may the force be with you!!!

So just make sure you go into bootloader holding camera+power button together. Make sure you have radio 2.22.23.02 then you may flash the 1.33.2005 danger spl. Then when you go back into bootloader you'll see the new spl. And the bootloader will have three android skateboarders on it. Then you know your good. And then boot recovery. Wipe. Flash the rom .zip from sdcard. See the problem your having is the spl you have right now. Can't handle the size of the rom your trying to flash.

Thank you very much, that was the problem as I see I used a wrong spl. But when I hold the camera+power button together I have the three android skateboard on it. Right now I have the G1 with the 1.6 version rooted. In order to make it works for future firmware versions I will need to unroot the G1 with downgrade it again to the RC29, then downgrade the original radio and spl and start from scratch. Or only reflash the new radio and reflash spl but using the danger version.
PD
This G1 is not my is from a friend, but compared with my G1 and it has the danger spl, I will need to reflash the danger spl to my friends' G1.

Why you guys want to install always DangerSPL? It's never needed, there are much more flexible and more secure ways to get enough space for FroYo-ROMs.
Only my 2 cent.
Andisa has a point. Not super needed anymore. But its just what I run. And once you got it the first time. No headache or chances after that. But no when you change roms you do not need to go and do that all over again to answer your question. So now if you have the proper radio and spl. You installed a custom recovery. Now go ahead put zip file on sd wipe and flash. You should be good to go.

But no when you change roms you do not need to go and do that all over again to answer your question. So now if you have the proper radio and spl. You installed a custom recovery. Now go ahead put zip file on sd wipe and flash. You should be good to go.

In my own G1, I have the danger spl installed too and never have had any problems with it, in this case, when I was flashing this G1 I knew that I was using the last radio but when I was ready to flash the spl I saw that I had two versions, the Latest G1 SPL, and haykuro_new_spl-signed.
I had selected the Lastest G1, After that I flashed with the last roms mentioned above and here I am trying to fix this. All the ways, the 1.6 is running smooth. Thank you for all and I am very happy to all your help.
